    The object of the paper is to present the two concepts of masculinity worked on the ground of the so-called male studies. The peculiar and distinctive feature of these theories, formulated by Franco La Cecla and Robert Blye, is that they give up the traditional conceptual background of feminism so as to replace it with a newly developed methodology. Moreover, both authors pay their attention to the masculine version of the historical “problem with no name”, resulting in this case from the bias of feminism against men. The main aim of the paper is to provide a critical analysis of the mentioned concepts.

    The article is a discussion of the book by Wojciech Śmieja entitled: Hegemonia i trauma. Literatura wobec dominujących fikcji męskości. The author of the article concentrates on highlighting the importance of the Silesian scholar’s publication for Polish studies on masculinity. He describes the historical and theoretical literary framework of the presented work, paying attention to the rich exemplification of the analyzed issues. He also undertakes a discussion with some theoretical assumptions of the book, especially in the context of the implications of Kaja Silverman’s model and draws attention to some of the interpretation problems associated with the use of this theoretical approach. The author, thus, proposes an outline of alternative ways of reading the texts of Jacek Podsiadło and Szczepan Twardoch, pointing to the possibility of shifting the focus from Silverman’s approach of masochism to the issue of specificallyunderstood individuation as the possibility of a different interpretation of the male position – an interpretation which contests the patriarchal social order.

    The aim of this paper is to present the homophobic and homohysteric discourse in Serhiy Zhadan’s prose. Adopting the perspective of the pro-feminist men and masculinities studies and researching the discourse on masculinity in Zhadan’s fiction enables the author to present men in the period of transformation of the last twenty-five years and show the gradual changes in the dominant attitude towards gays. Although it is difficult to treat Zhadan’s fiction as a full compendium of knowledge on the state of Ukrainian homophobia, the author claims that it contains images of masculinity and relationships between men that are accurate literary representations of the changes currently taking place in Ukraine.     Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie fragmentu wyników badań, dotyczących postrzegania i kreowania męskiej tożsamości przez mężczyzn ćwiczących w siłowniach. Fragment ten dotyczy tacierzyństwa oraz budowania relacji w związkach. W artykule opisane zostało oscylowanie badanych między tradycyjnym a nowym paradygmatem męskości. Feministyczna koncepcja men’s studies przeplata się tu z tradycyjnym podejściem do męskości. Budowanie relacji damsko-męskich dla wielu mężczyzn odbywa się na drodze negocjowania praw i obowiązków. Współczesne podejście do męskości otworzyło mężczyznom drogę do pełnego korzystania z ojcostwa. Odnalezienie w sobie instynktu tacierzyńskiego i troska o dziecko, z czułością zarezerwowaną niegdyś wyłącznie dla matki, traktowane jest obecnie jako nadrzędny cel ojcostwa. Tacierzyństwo to w polskiej nomenklaturze nowe słowo, kojarzone przede wszystkim z urlopem tacierzyńskim (budzącym jeszcze wiele kontrowersji). Badacza interesowało, czy mężczyźni powielają wzorce ojcostwa wdrukowane w procesie socjalizacji, czy wypracowali własne, oparte na indywidualnych relacjach z dzieckiem.
    The aim of this article is to present a fragment of research on the perception and creation of male identity by men exercising in gyms. This passage refers to fatherhood and creating relationships in the body building context. The article describes the oscillation between a traditional and a new paradigm of masculinity. The feminist concept of men’s studies is interwoven with the traditional approach to masculinity. For many men, building a male-female relationship takes place through the negotiation of rights and obliga tions. Contemporary approach to masculinity has opened a way to take full advantage of fatherhood. Finding a paternal instinct and care for the child, with affection once reserved exclusively for the mother, both of them are currently considered the ultimate goals of fatherhood. The researcher was interested in knowing whether men duplicate paternity patterns imprinted in the process of socialization, or have developed their own models, based on individual relationship with the child.

    Celem artykułu jest przeanalizowanie sytuacji współczesnych mężczyzn oraz wyjaśnienie zasadności stosowania określenia „samiec alfa” jako synonimu współczesnego mężczyzny. Analizie zostaje poddana kwestia kryzysu męskości oraz wyznaczników męskiej atrakcyjności we współczesnych społeczeństwach. Kwestia oceny męskości ukazana została przez pryzmat dwóch paradygmatów: tradycyjnego i nowoczesnego, które ujmują pojęcie męskości w zupełnie odmienny sposób. Zaproponowana analiza przyjmuje perspektywę płci kulturowej i odwołuje się do koncepcji teoretycznych oraz danych empirycznych, ilustrujących faktyczną sytuację mężczyzn. W tekście zostaje postawiona teza, że ewentualny kryzys męskości odnosi się do wizerunku tradycyjnego mężczyzny, który nie spełnia dziś oczekiwań zarówno kobiet, jak i społeczeństwa. Owe trudności przystosowawcze mężczyzn wynikają z rosnącej niezależności kobiet oraz nowych standardów męskości, które formułuje społeczeństwo. Ponadto trudności przystosowawcze mężczyzn wynikają zarówno z przyczyn subiektywnych – mężczyźni wcale nie porzucili tradycyjnych wizji męskości, jak i obiektywnych – obowiązujące sprzeczne wizje męskości sugerują wniosek, że samo społeczeństwo nie wie, jaki winien być współczesny mężczyzna.
    The aim of the article is to analyse the situation of modern men and explain the legitimacy of the use of the term ‘alpha male’ as a synonym of modern man. The issue of the masculinity crisis and determinants of male attractiveness in contemporary societies are analysed. The assessment of masculinity was presented through the prism of two paradigms: traditional and modern, which capture the concept of masculinity in a completely different way. The proposed analysis takes on the gender perspective and refers to theoretical concepts and empirical data illustrating the actual situation of men. The thesis is presented that a possible crisis of masculinity refers to the image of a traditional man who today does not meet the expectations of women and society. These difficulties in male adaptation result from the increasing independence of women and the new standards of masculinity that are formulated by society. Moreover, men’s adaptation difficulties result from both subjective reasons – men have not abandoned traditional visions of masculinity, and objective ones – the current contradictory visions of masculinity suggest that society itself does not know what a modern man should be like.

    Artykuł ma na celu analizę koncepcji, kierunków i perspektyw badawczych, za pomocą których nauki o wsi opisują wiejskich mężczyzn. Analiza powstała na podstawie najważniejszych publikacji podejmujących temat relacji między płcią kulturową a wsią w szeroko pojętych społeczeństwach zachodnich. Artykuł opisuje społeczny kontekst tworzenia konstrukcji wiejskich męskości, ich przemiany oraz główne kategorie, które pozwalają na ich definiowanie. Wyodrębnione kategorie analityczne to: rolnictwo i jego znaczenie w kreowaniu figury rolnika/farmera jako symbolu męskości wiejskiej; alkohol i publiczne odgrywanie męskości; seksualność i erotyczne obrazy wsi; małżeństwo heteroseksualne i praktyki rodzicielskie. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie dynamiki wiejskich męskości i zmian, którym podlegają, oraz wskazanie wzajemnych powiązań miasta i wsi w kontekście męskości. Artykuł wskazuje na potrzebę zwrócenia uwagi na dotychczas rzadko poruszane w polskiej socjologii wsi kwestie, na przykład sytuację osób nieheteronormatywnych.
    The article is an analysis of the concepts, perspectives, and premises used in rural studies to depict rural men. The most influential publications that are devoted to the interlinkages between gender and rurality in Western societies have been analyzed. The article presents the social context, in which the constructs of rural masculinities have emerged, the transformations thereof and the key categories they are defined by. These categories are: the agriculture and its role in the construction of a farmer figure as a symbol of rural masculinity; alcohol and public performances of masculinity; sexuality and the erotic images of the countryside; heterosexual marriage and parental practices. The article aims at demonstrating the dynamics of changes in rural masculinities and indicating the connections between city and the countryside in the aspect of masculinity. The article calls for more attention to some issues that were infrequently addressed in Polish rural sociology, such as the situation of non-heteronormative persons.

    Opis:
    Animated movies can be treated as one of the forms of cultural transmission that can be a source of gender stereotypes. Therefore, they are involved in the process of constructing images of femininity and masculinity, especially among young viewers. The author of this article presents what are, in his opinion, the most popular ways of categorizing masculinity, and then juxtaposes them with the typology of masculine characters presented in contemporary animated films. The empirical material used in the study is based on a qualitative content analysis carried out on the fifteen most popular titles from the years 2011–2015. Certain difficulties regarding the description of the characters presented in animated films, using categories from classical theories of masculinity, are indicated. The author presents a new category of masculinity – selective masculinity.
    Filmy animowane mogą być traktowane jako jedna z form przekazów kulturowych będących źródłem stereotypów płciowych. Biorą zatem udział w procesie konstruowania obrazu kobiecości oraz męskości, szczególnie wśród młodych odbiorców. Autor artykułu przedstawia najpopularniejsze jego zdaniem sposoby kategoryzowania męskości, następnie zestawia je z typologią postaci męskich prezentowanych we współczesnych filmach animowanych. Wykorzystany materiał empiryczny pochodzi z jakościowej analizy treści przeprowadzonej na piętnastu najpopularniejszych tytułach z lat 2011–2015. Wskazane zostały trudności z opisem bohaterów prezentowanych w filmach animowanych za pomocą kategorii pochodzących z klasycznych teorii męskości. Autor prezentuje nową kategorię męskości – męskość selektywną.

    Prezentowany tekst stanowi propozycję syntetycznego i wieloaspektowego zbadania i opisania wpływu modernistycznych i postmodernistycznych strategii dyskursu maskulinistycznego na konceptualizację i introwertyzację ukraińskiej tożsamości narodowo-kulturowej kreowanej na łamach literatury ukraińskiej XX – początku XXI wieku. Autorka artykułu uważa, iż maskulinizm w nowożytnej literaturze kraińskiej, rozumiany przez nią jako transgresyjny typ dyskursywnej krytycznej samoświadomości intelektualnej, bazującej zarówno na wartościach duchowych, jak i cielesnych, ukierunkowany jest na świadomy proces tworzenia postkolonialnego ukraińskiego charakteru narodowego oraz postkolonialnej ukraińskiej kultury i literatury narodowej, zabezpieczanych narodowym instynktem samoobrony.
    The present text proposes a synthetic and multi-dimensional investigation and description of the impact of modernist and postmodernist strategies of the discourse of masculinity in conceptualization and introvertisation of the Ukrainian national-cultural identity created by the Ukrainian literature of the 20th century and early 21st century. The author of the this text, considers that masculinity in modern Ukrainian literature, defined as a transgressive type of critical self-awareness of the intellectual discourse – based on spiritual, as well as corporeal, values – is aimed at the conscious process of creating the postcolonial national character and postcolonial Ukrainian culture and literature, as well as securing the national instinct of self-defense.
