    Opis:
    The author of this article tries to consider the problem of justification of adult education from the perspective of two discourses. The one treats adult education as the instrument of civilizing the society; the other concentrates on producing skills which one needs to become an employee and a consumer. Both treat adult learners instrumentally despite their various ideological justification. The author believes that the meanings of adult education have been always rooted in the social and economic interests of political system rather than in the needs of adult people – participants of adult education. That is why the question ‘What is the mechanism of creation of educational needs in society?’ is still important, especially if we treat emancipation as the substance of education of adults, without ignoring the variety of aims, interests, expectations and political explanations.

    Celem niniejszego tekstu jest pokazanie, w jaki sposób studenci, należący do pokolenia 20 plus – czyli urodzeni i wychowani po 1989 roku w Polsce – rozumieją sens obywatelskości. Na podstawie prostego zabiegu – sprowadzającego się do zebrania otwartych wypowiedzi na temat tego, czym według ciebie jest bycie obywatelem, i ich fenomenograficznej analizy – autorka pokazuje dwie domeny obywatelskości, które rządzą ich opisem. Pierwsza to bycie obywatelem jako bycie intelektualnie i działaniowo zaangażowanym podmiotem z silnie wyeksponowanym pierwiastkiem „ja”, ale opisywanym za pomocą konstrukcji nieobywatela, czyli kogoś, kto nie tylko nie działa w sferze publicznej, ale łatwo poddaje się manipulacji. Druga to postać zakorzenionego w tradycji i historii narodu obywatela, którego istota bycia wynika z tego, że został „dobrze wychowany” albo „dobrze wykształcony”. Każdy z tych typów zakorzeniony jest w instrumentalnie traktowanej edukacji obywatelskiej, która redukuje rozumienie demokracji do sprawowania władzy przez większość, a nie uczy respektowania słabszego.
    The aim of this text is to demonstrate how students over twenty (born and raised in Poland after 1989) conceptualize citizenship. The author argues for two domains of citizenship based on the collection and phenomenographic analyses of open narratives on what it means for the respondents to be citizens. The first domain describes the citizen as an intellectually engaged and task-oriented agent with a strong “ego” but in fact as a “non-citizen”, a construct described as somebody inactive civically and prone to manipulation. The second domain describes the national rooted in his/her tradition and history, whose civic identity is about “proper” upbringing and education. Both types are rooted in instrumental civic education which reduces the concept of democracy to the rule of majority rather than teaching respect for the weaker.

    Niniejszy tekst nawiązuje do dyskusji o znaczeniu uczenia się dorosłych, ale w wyraźnie wyodrębnionym kontekście badawczym. Ów kontekst został zdefiniowany przez analizę biografii nietradycyjnych studentów ukierunkowaną na identyfikację ich indywidualnych doświadczeń życiowych traktowanych przez nich jako edukacyjne. W rezultacie analiza indywidualnych uzasadnień doprowadziła do zidentyfikowania pięciu typów narracji. Są to: „Chcę osiągnąć więcej niż moi rodzice”, „Dziś trzeba dostosować się do rynku pracy i postępu cywilizacyjnego”, „Dorosły z natury jest mądry”, „Muszę dać sobie szansę”, „Chcę być świadomy/a tego, w czym uczestniczę”. Projekt ujawnił, że jakość owych narracji wskazuje na sposób użycia języka opisującego uczenie się badanych, a tym samym na potencjał ich uczenia się w ogóle. Co więcej, wszystkie narracje pokazują, że to społeczne korzenie tworzą potencjał indywidualnych możliwości uczenia się badanych. W ten sposób próbuję nawiązać do wątpliwości wyrażanych przez G.J.J. Biestę (2006, 2010), który twierdzi, że ekonomiczny język opisu uczenia się - zaadaptowany przez teoretyków edukacji – spowodował, że pytanie o dobrą edukację i jej społeczne znaczenie jest obecnie pomijane. A – jak pokazują wyniki badań w tym projekcie – społeczne znaczenie uczenia się jest wciąż istotnym zagadnieniem.  
    This text refers to a discussion on the meanings of adult education but in a special research context. This context is defined by the analyses of nontraditional students’ biographies oriented towards exploring their life experiences treated in their justifications as educational. As a consequence, on the basis of their individual justifications, I have reconstructed five types of narrations. These are: “I want to reach more than my parents” (1), “Nowadays we have to adapt to the free market and the progress of the civilized world” (2), “The adult person is clever by nature” (3), “I have to give myself a chance” (4), “I want to be aware of that world I am part of” (5). This work results in the unveiling of the qualities of narration schema, which shows the use of learning language by the interviewed adults and their learning potential at the same time. What is more, all these narrations show that the social roots of individual explanations have created the learning potential of the interviewed adults. In this way, I try to refer to the doubts demonstrated by G. J. J. Biesta (2006; 2010) who says that the economic language of learning adapted in the theory of education caused the question about a good education and its social meaning is neglected. The research presented here shows that social meanings of learning are still an important issue.

    Opis:
    The main aim of this article is to reconstruct the basic features of phenomenography as the methodological approach and method of gathering data in educational research. Referring to publications of Ferec Marton, the main creator of this method, the author tries to name basic issues important for researchers who want to undertake phenomenography in their projects. What is more she unveils her experiences connected with her own research on adult learning conducted in the phenomenography perspective. In her opinion, there are very important cognitive consequences of applying this method in projects which create its potential at the same time. The first one is that phenomenography does not divide the world of our experiences into black and white; it feeds the shadows and allows to define the world through the prism of different colours of one phenomenon. The second feature is showing that the distinction of experiences is rooted in the world of culture in which we exist. The third is that thanks to this method a researcher does not only reconstruct social practices but they can show that a society needs these practices and cannot even imagine that their everyday life could be changed.
    Głównym celem niniejszego tekstu jest rekonstrukcja głównych założeń fenomoenografii jako metody stosowanej w badaniach edukacyjnych. Odnosząc się publikacji Ferenca Martona – twórcy tej metody – autorka stara się wyróżnić główne kwestie, na które warto zwrócić uwagę badaczy, którzy chcą realizować swoje projekty w tej właśnie perspektywie. Co więcej, odwołując się do własnych doświadczeń badawczych obejmujących problem uczenia się dorosłych, ujawnia refleksje na temat fenomenografii. Zdaniem autorki artykułu istnieje kilka poznawczych konsekwencji stosowania tej metody w projektach, które jednocześnie kształtują jej potencjał. Po pierwsze, w naturze fenomenografii nie jest dzielenie świata naszych doświadczeń na biały i czarny, ale raczej definiowanie jego znaczenia przez pryzmat rożnych odcieni doświadczanego zjawiska. Po drugie, różnica w doświadczaniu świata przez podmioty jest pochodną kultury, w której funkcjonujemy. Po trzecie, fenomenografia nie tylko rekonstruuje praktyki społeczne, ale jednocześnie pokazuje, że istnieje na nie społeczne zapotrzebowanie.

    Niniejszy tekst nawiązuje do dyskusji o znaczeniu uczenia się dorosłych, ale w wyraźnie wyodrębnionym kontekście badawczym. Ów kontekst został zdefiniowany przez analizę biografii nietradycyjnych studentów ukierunkowaną na identyfikację ich indywidualnych doświadczeń życiowych traktowanych przez nich jako edukacyjne. W rezultacie analiza indywidualnych uzasadnień doprowadziła do zidentyfikowania pięciu typów narracji. Są to: „Chcę osiągnąć więcej niż moi rodzice”, „Dziś trzeba dostosować się do rynku pracy i postępu cywilizacyjnego”, „Dorosły z natury jest mądry”, „Muszę dać sobie szansę”, „Chcę być świadomy/a tego w czym uczestniczę”. Projekt ujawnił, że jakość owych narracji wskazuje na sposób użycia języka opisującego uczenie się badanych, a tym samym na potencjał ich uczenia się w ogóle. Co więcej, wszystkie narracje pokazują, że to społeczne korzenie tworzą potencjał indywidualnych możliwości uczenia się badanych. W ten sposób próbuję nawiązać do wątpliwości wyrażanych przez G. J. J. Biestę (2006, 2010), który twierdzi, że ekonomiczny język opisu uczenia się – zaadaptowany przez teoretyków edukacji – spowodował, że pytanie o dobrą edukację i jej społeczne znaczenie jest obecnie pomijane. A – jak pokazują wyniki badań w tym projekcie – społeczne znaczenie uczenia się jest wciąż istotnym zagadnieniem.

    The aim of the following text is to present various manners of thinking about adults by five-year olds. On the basis of group interviews the author tries to recognize how children perceive adults. Despite the fact that this research ought to be treated only as a case study, the outcome shown in the essay depicts the children’s world. What is more it also shows how we, the adults, rear children. It was demonstrated that children view us as individuals physically resembling themselves, extremely busy at work, privileged when it comes to doing things that children cannot, great role models and good guardians. They do realize that in the adult world there are people who can do harm to them. To us it may seem that all these revelations are nothing new, but the results can show that we fail to treat children as partners.

    The author of this article argues that the problem of good education is a public issue. Inspired by theorist G.J.J. Biesta who posed questions regarding the significance of good education, the author interviewed adult students about this phenomenon. The phenomenographic analyses of students’ statements unveiled three description categories of good education. These are: good education as a synonym of the school which fulfils standards of teaching, good education as an instrument of human success and good education as a tool of human enlightening. All the students’ descriptions led to the observation that the common horizon of the understanding of good education was the idea of education as a method which is goal oriented. This means that good education is described here through the prism of concrete aims and effective tools, but not by means of problematic ideas and values which serve these goals. This attitude may result in instrumental relations between people and the world, and the quality of the (worse) human condition
    Autorka niniejszego tekstu podejmuje głos w sprawie dobrej edukacji jako ważnej kwestii publicznej. Inspirując się pytaniem współczesnego teoretyka G.J.J. Biesta, co to znaczy, że edukacja jest dobra, przeprowadza wywiady wśród dorosłych studentów, będących jednocześnie rodzicami, na ten właśnie temat. Ujawnione w wyniku fenomenograficznej analizy kategorie opisu tak zwanej „dobrej edukacji” rozumianej jako a) wywiązywanie się szkoły ze standardów nauczania, b) traktowanie edukacji jako środka do kariery, c) traktowanie szkolnej edukacji jako narzędzia „oświecania”, pokazują wyraźnie, że dominującym horyzontem jej rozumienia jest widzenie w edukacji głównie metody nauczycielskiego postępowania w celu osiągnięcia zamierzonego efektu kształcenia. Chodzi zatem o realizację celów już zdefiniowanych, a nie o wartość i znaczenie tego celu czy problematyzowanie idei, którym edukacja miałaby służyć. To, jak twierdzi autorka, może przenosić się na budowanie instrumentalnych relacji człowiek – świat i jakość naszej (gorszej) ludzkiej kondycji.

    The main assumption of this text is that being a parent can create an opportunity to learn. From an andragogical perspective this assumption refers to the key issue which is the answer about the mechanism of learning experience creation. The way the author chooses to consider this problem is phenomenography research on what adult people have experienced being a mother or father in their lives and what they have learnt in this situation. The main instrument of their learning experience description is the concept of upbringing identified through the prism of the following questions: What does it mean that you are a parent? How do you know how to create a relation with your child? What in your opinion is the success and failure in your parenting? In the end this small project demonstrates that instrumentality is the domain form of the description of parents’ thinking about children and reality in which they exist. That is why the author asks about the potential of cultural foundation in the formation of the learning experience.
    Głównym założeniem przyjętym w niniejszym artykule jest to, że doświadczenie bycia rodzicem jest jednym z tych, które tworzy szansę dorosłym na uczenie się. W tym sensie autorka nawiązuje do kluczowego w andragogice zagadnienia dotyczącego mechanizmu kształtowania doświadczeń uczących (learning experience). Aby spróbować się z nim zmierzyć, przeprowadziła ona badanie fenomenograficzne dotyczące tego, czego dorośli doświadczają będąc rodzicami, a w konsekwencji czego się uczą będąc w tej sytuacji. Proste pytania typu: co to znaczy według ciebie być rodzicem, skąd wiesz jak wychowywać własne dziecko, czym jest dla ciebie sukces, a czym porażka w wychowaniu, stały się inspiracją dla rodzicielskich wypowiedzi. W rezultacie ich analizy wyłoniono kilka koncepcji wychowania, których wspólnym fundamentem – jak się okazuje – jest instrumentalizm w myśleniu o dzieciach i o świecie, w którym funkcjonują, ale także o sobie i własnym uczeniu się. Dlatego na koniec autorka pyta, czy nie jest tak, że ów instrumentalizm jest cechą naszej kultury i przekłada się na rozumienie tego, co jest uczące w naszym życiu, czyli – mówiąc językiem andragogów – na rozumienie uczącego potencjału naszych doświadczeń.

    Głównym założeniem przyjętym w niniejszym artykule jest to, że doświadczenie bycia rodzicem jest jednym z tych, które tworzy szanse nam dorosłym na uczenie się. W tym sensie autorki nawiązują do ważnego w andragogice zagadnienia dotyczącego mechanizmu konstruowania uczących doświadczeń (learning experience). Aby je zidentyfikować, autorki przeprowadzają wśród trzydziestolatków badanie fenomenograficzne dotyczące tego, jak rozumieją oni wychowanie. Proste pytania typu: czym jest dla ciebie wychowanie?, co to znaczy, że jesteś rodzicem? stały się inspiracją dla rodzicielskich opowieści. W rezultacie analizy wypowiedzi badanych wyłoniono cztery koncepcje wychowania: (a) wychowywanie jako rozpoznawanie i realizacja potrzeb dziecka, (b) wychowywanie jako odkrywanie dziecka, (c) wychowywanie jako konsekwentne działanie zamierzające do założonego celu, (d) wychowywanie jako proces, dzięki któremu dochodzi do przedefiniowania siebie jako dorosłego w nowej roli. Wspólną cechą tych koncepcji jest instrumentalny sposób podejścia do dzieci, ale także do siebie jako dorosłych. A jak sugerują autorki, nie jest on wyłącznie rezultatem wewnętrznych przekonań badanych, ale cechą kultury, w której żyjemy.
    The key argument in this article is that being a parent creates learning opportunities. In that sense the authors refer to the main issue presented in the andragogic field, which is construction of learning experience. For that reason they asked 30 year old parents about their understanding of upbringing process. The following simple questions posed in the phenomenographic style became triggers for in-depth narratives by the parents: what is upbringing in your opinion?, what does it mean that you are a parent? As the result of analyses of the stories the authors identify four types of upbringing concepts rooted in the parents’ experience. These are: (a) upbringing as recognition and fulfilment of children needs, (b) upbringing as the process of learning a child, (c) upbringing as activity oriented to fulfil the aims defined by parents, (d) upbringing as the process of redefining new roles of the adult. The common feature of all these concepts is instrumental attitude towards children and towards parents themselves. As the authors argue that such an attitude is not the result of parental beliefs but first of all the impact of the culture they live in.

    Opis:
    Celem niniejszego tekstu jest próba ujawnienia znaczeń, jakie kryją się za uczeniem się dorosłych w kontekście uzasadnień towarzyszących sukcesom i porażkom w życiu. Pytanie o to, czym jest sukces i co znaczy w ich życiu, stało się pretekstem do rozmowy o doświadczeniach życiowych z kilkoma przypadkami 40-latków. W Polsce ta grupa postrzegana jest jako pokolenie czasu stabilizacji ze względu na to, że nie doświadczyła ona bezpośrednio wojny, komunistycznej opresji ani stanu wojennego. To pokolenie swoją edukacyjną karierę kształtowało przed transformacją 1989 roku, a w swoją dorosłość wchodziło po zmianach ekonomicznych. Opowieści badanych stały się w niniejszym pro-jekcie przedmiotem analiz, które w rezultacie doprowadziły do rekonstrukcji koncepcji uczenia się. Są to: uczenie się jako proces dążenia do ekonomicznej niezależności (1), uczenie się jako organizowanie miejsca pracy sobie i innym (2), uczenie się jako rezultat oceny własnych kompetencji przez innych (3). W trakcie wywiadu okazało się, że język opisu w narracjach badanych ma ekonomiczny status bez względu na to czy mówili oni o swoim zawodowym życiu czy o osobistym. Przedstawione w niniejszym tekście analizy mają wyłącznie charakter jakościowego studium przypadku.
    The main aim of this text is the attempt to demonstrate what kind of learning meanings are created when adult people justify success and failure in their lives. The question – what success means has inspired the individual narration about life experiences of the 40 plus generation. In Poland this age group is perceived as the stabilization generation, because of the fact that people at this age did not have to experience a war, communist oppression or martial law. They were educated before the year of political transformation in Poland in 1989 and their adulthood occurred after economic changes. As a result, the narrations’ analyses led to identifying the concepts of learning. They were: learning as the process of pursuit of economic independence (1), learning as creating job opportunities (2), learning as the result of assessment of one’s own competence by others (3). During the conversation (while being interviewed) it turned out that the language of narration was economic regardless of whether they were talking about their vocational or personal life. The analyses that followed should be only treated as a qualitative case study.

    Autorzy niniejszego artykułu rozważają znaczenie koncepcji LLL przez pryzmat sposobu w jaki opisuje się kompetencje w andragogice. W tym celu analizują oni dokumenty – wytworzone przez polityków oraz publikacje dotyczące badań nad edukacją innych autorów. W rezultacie identyfikują dwa sposoby opisu kompetencji. Pierwszy utożsamiany jest z procesem administrowania edukacją, drugi z ich traktowaniem jako dyspozycji do uczenia się. Pokazują w ten sposób, że o ile pierwszy ma charakter neoliberalny gdzie edukacja dla rynku dominuje w opisie jej znaczenia, to drugi ma charakter konstruktu społeczno-kulturowego zbudowanego wokół pytania – czemu służy edukacja?
    The authors of the following article explore the concept of LLL by revealing the way competencies are described as an andragogical phenomenon. Documents created by politicians, educational research reports and opinions presented in the field of andragogical articles are analyzed. As a result the researchers have identified two ways of describing competencies. One is management of competencies as educational products and the other is interpreting them as human disposition to learn. The authors argue that the former is created by neoliberal ideology that focuses on the value of education as tailored to the market needs while the latter is the social and cultural construct based on the inquiry into the meaning of education and its developmental goals.

    This text is a result of qualitative investigation on the mechanism of creating educational competence in the light of adults’ learning experience. The author presents three kinds of educational experience based on phenomenographic analysis of non – traditional students’ narrations about their educational biographies. She names these phenomena as: (a) educational experience as a result of staying in an educational institution and as a result of knowledge absorption, (b) educational experience as a consequence of lack of education appropriate for the expectations of the subjects on every level of their learning process, (c) educational experience as being in the position of the sources exchange (material, intellectual, and social).
    Niniejszy tekst jest rezultatem badań jakościowych autorki na temat konstruowania doświadczeń edukacyjnych dorosłych w ciągu ich życia jako implikujących pojawienie się kompetencji edukacyjnej. Autorka krytycznie prezentuje trzy typy doświadczeń edukacyjnych zrekonstruowanych w oparciu o fenomenograficzną analizę biografii edukacyjnych nietradycyjnych studentów. Nazywa je w następujący sposób: (a) doświadczenie edukacyjne jako rezultat przebywania w instytucji kształcącej i absorpcji wiedzy, (b) doświadczenie edukacyjne jako konsekwencja niedoświadczania edukacji adekwatnej do oczekiwań badanych na każdym etapie ich życia, (c) doświadczanie edukacyjne jako bycie w sytuacji wymiany zasobów intelektualnych, społecznych i materialnych. Wszystkie te opisy dotyczą dorosłych w wieku 30 i 40 lat, którzy zdecydowali się powrócić do sytemu edukacyjnego, a pochodzą z rodzin, gdzie nie było tradycji zdobywania wykształcenia, to znaczy z rodzin o robotniczym statusie i dopiero teraz mają szansę uczestniczenia w edukacji na poziomie uniwersyteckim. Z narracji badanych wynika, że ich edukacja miała zawsze instrumentalny i adaptacyjny charakter – co w rezultacie stało się barierą w kształtowaniu kompetencji edukacyjnej jako kulturowej związanej z tym, jak rozumieją oni i interpretują świat, w którym żyją. Badani są krytyczni wobec szkoły, ale trzeba przyznać, że kompetencja edukacyjna rozumiana jako sposób uczestnictwa w życiu kulturowym – jeśli się w ich narracjach w ogóle pojawiła – została usytuowana właśnie na poziomie edukacji uniwersyteckiej.
    Der vorliegende Text ist ein Ergebnis der von der Autorin durchgeführten Forschungen zur Schaffung von Bildungserfahrungen der Erwachsenen im Laufe ihres Lebens. Diese verursachen, dass es zur Bildungskompetenz kommt. Die Autorin stellt kritisch drei Typen von Bildungserfahrungen dar, die auf Basis der phänomenographischen Analyse der Bildungsbiographien nicht-traditioneller Studenten wiederhergestellt wurden. Es wird Folgendes angeführt: a) Bildungserfahrung als Ergebnis des Aufenthaltes in einer Bildungseinrichtung, b) Bildungserfahrung als Folge dessen, dass man in jedem Lebensabschnitt eine die Erwartungen der Befragten erfüllende Bildung nicht erhält, c) Bildungserfahrung als Austausch von intellektuellen, gesellschaftlichen und materiellen Ressourcen. Alle diese Beschreibungen beziehen sich auf Erwachsene im Alter zwischen 30 und 40 Jahren, die sich entschieden, zum Bildungssystem zurückzukehren und dabei aus Familien kommen, in denen es keine Tradition gab, eine universitäre Ausbildung zu machen, d.h. aus Arbeiterfamilien. Sie erhalten somit erstmals in der Generationenfolge einen Zugang zur Universitätsbildung. Aus den Aussagen der Befragten geht hervor, dass ihre Bildung immer einen instrumentellen Charakter hatte und auf Anpassung abzielte, was im Endeffekt zum Hindernis bei Gestaltung der Bildungskompetenz als einer kulturellen Kompetenz wurde, verbunden damit, wie sie die Welt, in der sie leben, verstehen und interpretieren. Die Befragten stehen gegenüber der Schule kritisch. Man muss aber zugeben, dass die als die Art und Weise der Beteiligung am kulturellen Leben verstandene Bildungskompetenz, wenn sie in ihren Aussagen überhaupt erscheint, gerade mit der Universitätsbildung verbunden wird.
