The article discusses the results of a study of how modality, as an aspect of spoken discourse competence in thirteen selected advanced students of English, was realised when Polish is the mother tongue and English the foreign language. Since the subjects demonstrated high levels of language proficiency, a portrait of an advanced learner of English is described in the first section of the article. Section 2 of the article presents the research questions and data collection procedures. The results of the study are interpreted in Section 3, in which an attempt is made to investigate possible correlations between L1 and L2 modality use with reference to deontic and epistemic modality, in a quantitative and qualitative form.

Purpose – This article aims to examine the complexity of the value added tax (VAT) in Germany and Poland. Research method – This paper uses a quantitative analysis of the VAT Act and a selected amendment to this Act in Germany and Poland. I consider the German and Polish language versions of the VAT Directive and the Vouchers Directive as a benchmark for comparing VAT complexity. A comparison of a number of law amendments and compliance costs in both countries enhances the analysis. Results – The VAT complexity in Poland significantly exceeds the complexity of the German VAT system. This is true for all analysed aspects. In Poland, the compliance costs of VAT are significantly higher than in Germany. The Polish VAT law is amended more frequently and is much more comprehensive than its German counterpart. This can be only partially justified by special regulations to combat tax fraud. The high VAT complexity in Poland is also due to the complicated language and structure of the law. Although the German translation of the Vouchers Directive includes more words than the Polish version, the Polish legislator needs about twice as many words as their German counterpart for its implementation. Originality /value – Tax law is often criticised for its complexity. This study is the first to use the VAT Directive for a comparative study of the VAT complexity and reveals that the Polish legislator uses considerably more text for similar content than their German counterpart.

This article discusses the place of modality as a pragmalinguistic phenomenon in communication and the implications of such an investigation for contrastive discourse analysis. It proposes an alternative three-dimensional model of modality, the construction of which is possible through the addition of the affective load of an utterance as a separate variable related to speech modalisation and the assumption that dynamic modality is, in fact, correlated with deontic modality, at least on a prepositional level. The article also discusses the problems when contrastively analysing modality realisation. It highlights that the large number of cross-cultural nuances found in modal devices reflects the enormity of analytic difficulties with which a researcher is likely to be faced.

The article presents ideas regarding the explanation of grammar in the process of teaching Polish as a foreign language. The author focuses on problems such as: the place and role of grammar in teaching foreign languages including Polish as a foreign language; selection and analysis of language material for explanation; the manner of presenting grammar; the use of grammar commentary; using one’s mother tongue and foreign language of the learners to explain grammar; as well as referring to one’s mother tongue in order to facilitate the understanding of a given topic. The entire article is enriched with numerous examples from pedagogical practices as well as a list of topics from Polish grammar that after proper presentation should not be problematic for those learning Polish as a foreign language.

The article is devoted to the linguistic analysis of the polemics conducted in the press by Józef Kostrzewski and Bolko von Richthofen in the interwar period. The scientific subject – the ethnogenesis of the Slavs – turned into a sharp political polemic. The set of analysed texts is an example of a discourse – a tangle of texts, thematically related, standing with each other and with the discourse in a complex relationship. The texts refer to each other through numerous quotations, paraphrases, references in the text and footnotes. Their analysis provided information about the image of us – Poles (Slavs) vs. they – Germans (Germani), we – Polish scientists vs. they – German researchers existing then, as well as information on language strategies used to create a specific image of oneself and the opponent. Since the controversy was conducted in public, it also affected the public perception of the discussed issue, while the socio-historical reality of the time also had an impact on the course of the debate. The closer the Second World War approached, the more heated the dispute became, and the more scientists moved away from the scientific problem and entered into sharp political polemics.

Intention of this article is to test of defining attempts of the notion of discourse in the context of the interdisciplinary formulation. It appears here not only as the gathering of texts treat the connection of the statement with the definite conditions of her rise. Such approach founds the existence of interaction among the individual kinds of discoursive behaviours and the specific areas of the social life. The author tries to exchange features of discourse as one of the dimensions of the politics. He also shows the possibilities of use of the discoursive perspective in the methodology of political sciences. The analysis political discourse is correct only when it unites the proprieties of discoursive structures with the proprieties of political processes. One of the limitations the methodological mistake relates to the level of the text exclusively. These problems can be tackled on the basis of the complex analysis the title category presented in the paper.
Intencją artykułu jest próba zdefiniowania pojęcia dyskursu w ujęciu interdyscyplinarnym. Kategoria ta potraktowana zostaje nie tylko jako swoisty zbiór wypowiedzi, ale jako wytwór języka osadzony w ściśle określonym kontekście. Podejście takie zakłada istnienie interakcji między indywidualnymi rodzajami zachowań dyskursywnych a określonymi obszarami sfery publicznej. Autor próbuje wymienić cechy dyskursu jako jednego z wymiarów polityki. Pokazuje również możliwości użycia perspektywy dyskursywnej w metodologii badań politologicznych. Analiza dyskursu jest poprawna tylko wówczas, gdy łączy właściwości struktur dyskursywnych z właściwościami procesów politycznych. Ograniczenie się wyłącznie do poziomu tekstu jest poważnym błędem metodologicznym. Dyskursy stanowią bowiem semiotyczny kontekst praktyki politycznej, a tym samym pozostają odrębnym wymiarem systemu politycznego.

This article presents a preliminary, data-driven study of a corpus of texts written by advanced Polish learners of English, which were analysed with reference to a baseline corpus of native-speaker texts. The texts included in both corpora were produced in similar circumstances (classroom setting), with the same time and word limit, and in response to the same task. We conducted a comparative lexical analysis of the two corpora, using corpus methodology (word lists, cluster analysis, concordances, keyness) to identify the most significant differences. The most important conclusion from this study is that advanced foreign language use may differ from native-speaker language use in ways which only become visible in larger samples of language, and the differences, if analysed individually, would not be regarded as errors and would go unnoticed. There is some evidence in the study that some of these differences may be attributed to cross-linguistic influence.

This article investigates kynonyms, which constitute one of the most prominent categories of zoonyms. The research material was obtained with the use of an 11-point survey and encompasses the West-Slavic languages: Polish, Czech and Slovak. The study aims to indicate the core tendencies in how dogs are named in these languages, as well as potential regularities or inconsistencies therein. The article encompasses a theoretical component, a discussion on terminology and an exploration of the research material (through semantic and formal means). Most kynonyms are created through the use of: names or surnames of fictional characters known from television and films; pragmatic names; and a characteristic of the animal itself. Only approximately 6.5% of the researchmaterial includes the names derived through word formation; the other names involve metaphorical references. The study also incorporates a stratification of the dog’s image; however, the only correlation uncovered was the relationship between the race of the dog (small or large) and the type of accommodation in which that dog stayed.

In this paper, we report the results of an experimental study of the acoustic and articulatory features of the gemination in Modern Arabic language, pronounced by Algerian speakers. To extract the feature characteristics, we have carried out an acoustic analysis by computing the values of frequency formants, energy and durations of the consonants and subsequent vowels in the various [VCV] and [VCgV] utterances (Cg: geminate consonant). For the articulatory analysis, a range of kinematics parameters were analyzed from the phoneme productions including movement trajectories, distance, velocity, and duration of tongue movements. Among the most important results, we note a longer duration of the vowel following a geminate consonant, a decreasing in levels of F1 and F2 formants and a rising in level of F3 formant of this vowel.

Since 2015 there has been increased protest action by students at South African universities. One of the issues is decolonizing the curriculum. Academics have been re-thinking the curricula of various academic offerings. Recognizing the African heritage of students studying German could be in the form of comparing the first language (L1) of black African learners with German in order to facilitate learning the target language (TL). Specific examples of similarities and differences between German and Zulu are addressed in this article.

A contrastive analysis of feminitives in Bulgarian, Polish and RussianThe subject of this article is the contemporary usage of feminitives (specifically the names of occupations and functions), which traditionally are most often derived from masculine names. The article presents a contrastive analysis of feminitive usage in three Slavic languages: Bulgarian, Polish and Russian.
