Opis:
The aim of this paper was to assess the histomorphometrical and mechanical properties of ribs in patients with idiopathic scoliosis who underwent corrective surgery of scoliosis combined with thoracoplasty. Methods: The analyzed material encompasses 20 females between the ages of 12 and 18, whose pre-operative Cobb angle was 56.85 degrees, on average. The participants were divided into two age groups, up to the age of 15 and above 15 years old, taking into account the anatomical location of the assessed rib fragments with a division into floating and false ribs. The analysis of mechanical parameters was carried out by means of the quasi-static 3-point bending test, and the histomorphometric evaluation of the examined rib fragments was carried out using high-resolution computed tomography. Results: The existence of explicit relationships between selected radiological parameters describing scoliosis and mechanical and histomorphometric parameters of the ribs has not been confirmed. Statistically significant correlations between age and rib stiffness as well as between Young’s modulus and stiffness depending on the anatomical location of the examined rib fragment were confirmed. Conclusions: Mechanical and histomorphometric properties of bone tissue in patients with scoliosis are not explicitly associated with the radiological parameters characterizing scoliosis.

Opis:
The current methods of preventing calcium deficiency during the periparturient period are based primarily on a diet low in calcium and acidifying the rumen content before parturition, as well as on oral administration of liquid preparations or boluses. The available literature does not provide information on whether these forms of prevention are effective only immediately after the parturition, or whether they also affect an organism throughout the initial lactation period. The aim of the study was to examine the effects of three methods for the prevention of postpartum hypocalcaemia on selected indicators of mineral and energy metabolism, as well as on functional parameters of the parenchymal organs during the two week period following parturition in dairy cows diagnosed with low calcium concentrations before parturition, induced by a lower dietary mineral content. The study was conducted in 60 HF cows, aged 3-6 years old, fed TMR. The animals were divided into three groups: the first group received only a mineral preparation contained in the feed, adjusted to the physiological stage and milk production level; the second group received three additional doses (directly before the parturition, then 24 hours and 48 hours after the delivery) of an oral fluid preparation containing 62.5 g of Ca; while the third group received an intraruminal bolus containing 43 g of pure calcium (immediately after parturition). This research showed that physiological hypocalcaemia occurred at the beginning of lactation in the groups which had received additional calcium preparations (groups II and III), whereas in group I blood collection one week and two weeks after the parturition demonstrated subclinical hypocalcaemia. A statistically significant increase in magnesium and a decrease in phosphorus concentrations were also observed in the latter group, as well as an excessive GGTP activity and high bilirubin concentrations. Using only one complex mineral supplement in high yielding milk cows after parturition does not ensure the expected prophylactic effects, especially in the long term.

An analytical study of thermal explosion on Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid is carried out. Approximate solutions to the governing equations and analysis of the study in the Newtonian case, showed that an increase in Frank-Kamenestkii parameter and that of the Semenov parameter decreases the minimum temperature of the reacting fluid thereby delaying the initiation of thermal explosions while additional heat source brings about early initiation of thermal explosions. The same observation was deduced in the non-Newtonian case but in varying degrees.

Opis:
Electrical resistivity investigation was carried out at Ibeju Lekki, Southwestern Nigeria. The thrust of this study is to determine the geoelectrical parameters of the shallow aquifer and estimate the hydraulic characteristics of this aquifer unit from the surface geophysics. The area falls within the Dahomey basin of the Nigeria sedimentary terrain. Twenty-one VES were conducted using Shlumberger array with a maximum half current electrode (AB/2) of 100 m giving total spread of 200 m. Data were interpreted using partial curve matching technique and assisted 1-D forward modeling with WINRESIST software. The qualitative interpretation revealed KQ curves (ρ1 < ρ2 > ρ3 > ρ4) and KH curve (ρ1 < ρ2 > ρ3 < ρ4). The geoelectric section generated from the results of the VES revealed a four geo-electric layers; these include topsoil with resistivity ranging from 213-5404 Ωm, dry sand with resistivity values vary from 301to 17178 Ωm, saturated sand with resistivity varying from 110 to1724 Ωm and sand (saline water content) with resistivity values of between 8 and 97 Ωm. The major aquifer in the area occurs at the third geoelectric layer. The depth to this aquifer is of between 0.7m and 6.0m and the layer thickness is between 0.2 m and 19.9 m. The hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer estimated from the geoelectric parameters reveal that the aquifer has porosity values of between 29.4 % and 57.7 %, protective capacities of between 0.00013 and 0.015 mhos, transverse resistance ranges from 345-18502 Ωm2, transmissivity values vary from 13 to 310 m2/day and hydraulic conductivity ranges from 0.8-65 m/day. The results show that the aquifer is characterized by high porosity and low protective capacities of overburden layers indicating that it is highly vulnerable to surface contamination. It has high transverse resistance, high transmissivity, and high hydraulic conductivity indicating that the aquifer can transmit water at higher rate and sustain the need of the community. This study has demonstrated the efficacy of surface geophysics in estimating hydraulic characteristics of an aquifer where pumping test data are not available and also to determine its vulnerability to surface contaminants.

Opis:
A parameter of the signal segment is regarded as a measurand here. In a set of parameters the support of which consists of more than one element, a subset of averaging parameters is defined as those being reflexive, symmetric, bisymmetric, increasing monotonic, cancellable and continuous. These attributes, previously defined for discrete operations (B. Ellis, J. Pfanzagl), are in Section 3 reformulated for functional operations projecting signal segments into real numbers. Their meanings are explained and examples are given. Then, in Section 4, it is analysed to what degree these theoretical attributes are achieved in three kinds of circuits: in a low pass RC filter, in an integrator, and in a sample-and–hold circuit (S/H). The coefficient (12) was proposed for the evaluation of the circuit’s ability to provide a symmetric parameter. This attribute, although possessed by the integrator almost perfectly, is not achievable in the filter and S/H circuit. Thus the quasi-instant parameters provided by the S/H cannot be considered as averaged. The period of an effective influence of the input signal on the output voltage, and the delay introduced by the S/H circuit, are defined.

The paper is referring to the geotechnical centrifuge modelling that is used to prove the gabion facing wall stability. The gabion reinforcement wall is 15.3 meters tall and 17 meters length. The centrifuge model was speed up to 50 g and 75 g, and hadn't failure. The test results show that the largest settlements under 75 g speed was about 2.25 meters vertically and mainly in the gabion wall and just behind the gabion section. The largest settlements under 50 g speed was about 1.07 meter vertically and 1.8 meters horizontally. The value of the settlement increases with the shortness of the reinforcement. The value of the settlement decreases with the reduction of the gabion spacing in the wall facing. Reinforced gabion retaining wall can work safely. Nevertheless, mechanical and deformation behaviors need to be studied for wide applying in a practical engineering.

Relationship between selected molecular, cytogenetic and clinical parameters was analysed in a group of 63 individuals (45 males and 18 females) with full fragile X mutation. Significant correlation between the size and somatic instability of fully mutated alleles in both males and females was found. Possible explanations of this result are discussed. With respect to the mutation size, an apparent difference was observed between males with different degree of mental retardation. No such difference appeared when affected and normal females with full mutation were compared. The proportion of mutated active X chromosome was significantly higher in mentally retarded females than in those without any mental impairment.

Opis:
Professional musicians are required to practice playing instruments for long hours, which often exerts significant impact on their health. Attention should be given to the specificity of playing each instrument, including uncomfortable and sustained body position and repetitive movements causing long-term strain of certain parts of the body. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of long-term playing wind and string instruments on the visual system. Ninety male and female subjects aged 15 to 30 years were included in the study and divided into two groups: musicians (Msc) and non-musicians (nMsc). Significantly less subjects in the Msc group had properly corrected vision, wore optical prescription recommended by an ophthalmologist/optometrist, and/or underwent any eye examination at all in their lifetime, even though more subjects in this group experienced certain asthenopic symptoms. Also, accommodative amplitude got statistically worse under dim illumination conditions, accommodative facility was significantly different between musicians and non-musicians, although there were no differences between the groups when tested in bright illumination. None of the music stands used by the study subjects met the respective standards concerning uniform illumination rates. Playing string and wind instruments is a challenge for the visual system due to the forced body and head positions, and asymmetry between the visual plane and the plane of regard as well as non-uniform illumination in the working environment. However, conditions such as correct working distance and proper tilt of the music stand may be beneficial to the visual system. It is the role of optometrists to properly educate their patients about the importance of appropriate vision correction, especially in dim light and under adverse working conditions and to communicate the impact of such conditions on the visual system.

Opis:
Differential evolution (DE) presents a class of evolutionary and meta-heuristic techniques that have been applied successfully to solve many real-world problems. However, the performance of DE is significantly influenced by its control parameters such as scaling factor and crossover probability. This paper proposes a new adaptive DE algorithm by greedy adjustment of the control parameters during the running of DE. The basic idea is to perform greedy search for better parameter assignments in successive learning periods in the whole evolutionary process. Within each learning period, the current parameter assignment and its neighboring assignments are tested (used) in a number of times to acquire a reliable assessment of their suitability in the stochastic environment with DE operations. Subsequently the current assignment is updated with the best candidate identified from the neighborhood and the search then moves on to the next learning period. This greedy parameter adjustment method has been incorporated into basic DE, leading to a new DE algorithm termed as Greedy Adaptive Differential Evolution (GADE). GADE has been tested on 25 benchmark functions in comparison with five other DE variants. The results of evaluation demonstrate that GADE is strongly competitive: it obtained the best rank among the counterparts in terms of the summation of relative errors across the benchmark functions with a high dimensionality.
