Opis:
In the article the author examines fantastic novels by contemporary Polish writers (Andrzej Maleszka, Paweł Beręsowicz, Rafał Kosik and other) for young readers in a cultural context. In his essay he uses two well-known cultural categories “myth” and “magic” to his analysis of fantastic novels. According to the author, the myth and magic have two important functions in fantastic children’s literature. First, they lead young readers to knowledge about the world and depict different, complex phenomena of cultural dimension. Second, the myth and magic create a particular space (what “engulfs” young readers) of play and entertainment. Moreover, the myth and magic attract young readers to fabulous worlds including the elements of realistic literary convention. Thereby the writers increase their credibility among the youth. A “myth-magic” in the presented word of contemporary Polish fantastic novels assures balance between incredible entertainment represented by wizards, witches, dragons and the real world with characters having various digital devices within reach.

Poznań 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 179–196. ISSN 1644-6763. DOI 10.14746/pt.2019.32.9. The author analyzes the figure of the cyborg in science fiction literature and film. The text begins by showing this kind of literary work in the theoretical field and presents it as an interactive discourse. The author describes the scientific roots of constructing a human-technical hybrid, emphasizing the ideological and political context of this research. In this approach, the cyborg appears as a participant in and also a hostage of the Cold War. Next, the author finds literary and film creations of cyborgs inspired by this political and military heritage. The article also presents alternative images of cyborgs co-creating a feminist and postcolonial discourse. They were also included in specific policies and strategies aimed at deconstructing concepts such as sex and gender, sexuality, race, nation, social class. The main thesis of the article is that as fictitious and real entities, cyborgs are prone to ideologization and burdened with the obligation to politicize. Therefore, when studying cyborgs in literature, film and comics, we must ask what ideologies and politicians they serve.

Opis:
Vladimir Nabokov belongs to the most popular prose writers of the 20th century. His work is represented by a sophisticated composition, playing with the reader, rich stylistics, as well as bilingualism - works written in Russian and English. The article answers the question whether, despite the complicated content and form, Nabokov's work has achieved popularity thanks to the typical pop culture tricks, threads and tricks, or whether this was decided by the writer's talent. Nabokov undoubtedly had a critical attitude towards pop culture, which destroys individualism and originality, while at the same time was conducting a literary dialogue with it, using popular themes and motifs for its own unique perspective. The writer noticed the obvious threats arising from pop culture, criticized the advertising market, attacked the stereotyping of contemporary views and ubiquitous conformism, and at the same time he appreciated problems that were commonly rejected (sexuality) or attractive but trivialized (detective and adventure threads). Nabokov skillfully used mass culture, through his works he shaped the sensitivity of the recipient and intuitively trusted his intelligence.

Comic books are increasingly being used as a material for creating theatre plays. In Poland, first theatre adaptations of comics appeared in the mid-20th century, but on Broadway, comic strips have provided source material for theatre plays since its outsets in the late 1800s. In this paper I present a short history of the most important comic book adaptations for the theatre in Poland, with an emphasis on plays based on a Henryk Jerzy Chmielewski’s series Tytus, Romek i A’Tomek. I ponder upon the connotations between comic books and music, and bring into consideration many different forms that comic book adaptations can take. Above all, I analyse in details a few examples (Polish productions Staś i Zła Noga [Staś and the Bad Leg] by Bartłomiej Błaszczyński and Kajko i Kokosz by Marta Ogrodzińska, and an American production Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark by Julie Taymor) for the purpose of discussing the strategies of putting the comic book stories onto the stage and the difficulties involved with the process.

Reflecting on the many challenges facing Christianity as a religion, and particularly Christian philosophy as a way of thinking in modern, strange and unfamiliar times, one encounters time and again the grim realization that many of such challenges are simplyprovided by the current culture, the cultural sphere. Without idealizing Europe’s Christocentric culture and remembering that it was not homogeneous, we must recognize that it once existed, it was the ruling cultural norm. Today, such norms are indeed very different and vary greatly depending on the geographic region we have in mind and change from decade to decade. After the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, modernity and the postmodern era, we observe that what governs our cultural world today is pluralism more than anything else. But there are still some traces of Christocentrism in our culture and in what it has become during this period, namely popular culture. Among other aspects, research has focused on the analysis of one idea – that of the Christ-figure, which has come a long way from theology to culture to pop culture over the centuries. In this article, I will try to show why this complicated legacy can be seen, at least in part, as a challenge to Christianity in light of contemporary Christian philosophy.

This article will attempt to contextualize the complex negotiations, struggles and challenges between high culture and pop culture, between Western culture and Japanese culture, between authoritative cultural products and radicalized counterculture consumer products (such as animation), to argue that it would be more profitable to think of the relationships between highbrow/lowbrow, Western/non-Western, male versus female, heterosexual versus non-heterosexual, not simply in terms of dichotomies or domination/subordination, but in terms of reciprocal enrichment in a never-ending process of mutual metamorphoses.

Apocrypha as testimony of non-canonical reading of sacred texts can provide a starting point for a discussion on works of popular culture. Luc Besson’s film Angel-A, as a kind of synecdoche of filmmaking about angels illustrates in a vivid, pop-culture way the trends of understanding and describing reality. The director’s portrait of the angel, much different from that proposed by the Bible, promotes a model of the world which provides a sense of freedom and lightness. In the end, however, does pop-culture have the power to release us from the weight of secrecy? It seems that everyone must experience that for themselves…

For thousands of years mythological Lilith has undergone countless trans- formations. Although she had been created by God himself, just like Adam and Eve, the texts do not pay her as much attention as they do to the first marriage. What is more, contemporary scholars of religious studies throw doubt whether Lilith had even existed. Regardless of the Church’s or scholars’ acceptance, Lilith seems to be a character invariably present in the worldwide culture. In the dawn of time, she served as a kind of warning, enforcing a more careful childcare – it was believed that if left without a proper care, infants might have been taken or possessed by Lilith; in medieval times she became a symbol of lechery; contemporarily she is mainly associated with bewildering sexual graphics and rare literary presentations which emphasize her intense sex- ual urges. How such transformations came to be? How the transformation of mythological Lilith over the ages looked like?

The image reconstructed in this manner seems to be particularly interesting from the perspective of the figurative meaning of the lexeme chalga in the Bulgarian language. It then appears as a type of exemplar of anticulture, in which the representation of women’s beauty and the model of male-female relations are displayed in an extremely evocative and archetypal way.

Opis:
PostMarxist perspective perceived consumption primarily as an instrument of alienation. Cultural studies offered a different view. Focusing on using and reconstructing (both symbolic and physical) of goods, they argued that consumption may be a mechanism of authentic expression, a way of articulating consumer’s personal meanings. Cultural studies also demonstrated that consumers, through the process of consumption, can actively manifest their resistance to the market (or any imposed ideology). The paper traces the development of reflection on consumption within cultural studies, deriving from the work of Stuart Hall and Michel De Certeau, through the writings on subcultural and popcultural (in the sense of John Fiske) consumption, to contemporary subversive activities. It reveals the broad application of the notion of consumption for the purpose of describing contemporary social reality. The text discusses the concept of tactics and strategy, incorporation, as well as various forms of subversion. The author illustrates these concepts with observed examples or cases obtained from desk research. The paper examines the opposition potential of consumption, considers the cultural and social changes resulting from certain styles of consumption. It also poses the question of the status of consumer in today’s market. It offers different ways of interpreting the above problems present in the area of cultural studies.
