Opis:
Effects of solution treatment on room temperature mechanical properties were studied in cast AZ91 (Mg-9%Al-1%Zn-0.2%Mn) and AZ91-0.5%Ca alloys. In as-cast state, the Ca addition contributed to the suppression of discontinuous β phase precipitation and the formation of Al2 Ca phase. After solution treatment, the AZ91 alloy had only a small amount of Al8 Mn5 particles, while β and Al2 Ca phases were still present in the Ca-containing alloy. In as-cast state, the AZ91-0.5%Ca alloy showed better yield strength and hardness than the AZ91 alloy. The solution treatment increased the elongation in both alloys, which eventually led to the increase in ultimate tensile strength. The solution treatment resulted in a marked decrease in yield strength and hardness in the AZ91 alloy, whereas the decrements in those values were relatively negligible in the Ca-containing alloy due to the residual phases and solution hardening effect of Ca.

Opis:
The mechanical behavior and the change of retained austenite of nanocrystalline Fe-Ni alloy have been investigated by considering the effect of various Ni addition amount. The nanocrystalline Fe-Ni alloy samples were rapidly fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The SPS is a well-known effective sintering process with an extremely short densification time not only to reach a theoretical density value but also to prevent a grain growth, which could result in a nanocrystalline structures. The effect of Ni addition on the compressive stress-strain behavior was analyzed. The variation of the volume fraction of retained austenite due to deformation was quantitatively measured by means of x-ray diffraction and microscope analyses. The strain-induced martensite transformation was observed in Fe-Ni alloy. The different amount of Ni influenced the rate of the strain-induced martensite transformation kinetics and resulted in the change of the work hardening during the compressive deformation.

Opis:
The study presents the results of the application of a statistical analysis for the evaluation of the effect of high-melting additions introduced into a pressure cast Al-Si alloy on the obtained level of its proof stress Rp0.2. The base Al-Si alloy used for the tests was a typical alloy used for pressure casting grade EN AC-46000. The base alloy was enriched with high-melting additions, such as: Cr, Mo, V and W. The additions were introduced into the base Al-Si alloy in all the possible combinations. The content of the particular high-melting addition in the Al-Si alloy was within the scope of 0.05 to 0.50%. The investigations were performed on both the base alloy and alloy with the high-melting element additions. Within the implementation of the studies, the values of Rp0.2 were determined for all the considered chemical compositions of the Al-Si alloy. A database was created for the statistical analysis, containing the independent variables (chemical composition data) and dependent variables (examined Rp0.2 values). The performed statistical analysis aimed at determining whether the examined high-melting additions had a significant effect on the level of Rp0.2 of the Al-Si alloy as well as optimizing their contents in order to obtain the highest values of the Al-Si alloy's proof stress Rp0.2. The analyses showed that each considered high-melting addition introduced into the Al-Si alloy in a proper amount can cause an increase of the proof stress Rp0.2 of the alloy, and the optimal content of each examined high-melting addition in respect of the highest obtained value of Rp0.2 equals 0.05%.

Opis:
Despite of extensive researches for decades, there are many unclear aspects for recrystallization phenomenon in the cold rolled Ni-based alloys. Hence, different thermal cycles were conducted in order to determine microstructural evolutions and its effect on the magnetic and mechanical properties of a 90% cold-rolled thin sheet of a Ni-Fe-Cu-Mo alloy (~80 μm). The obtained results revealed that the recrystallization was started at a temperature of 550°C and was completed after 4 hours. An increase in the number of annealing twins was observed with an increase in annealing temperature, which was due to a bulging and long-range migration of grain boundaries during the discontinuous recrystallization. Ordering transformation occurred in the temperature range of 400-600°C and as a result, hardness, yield strength, and UTS were increased, while with an increase in the annealing temperature these mechanical properties were decreased. Maximum toughness was obtained by annealing at 550°C for 4 hours, while the highest elongation was obtained after annealing at 1050°C, where other mechanical properties including toughness, hardness, yield strength, and UTS were decreased due to the grain growth and secondary recrystallization. Moreover, coercivity and remanence magnetization were decreased from 4.5 Oe and 3.8 emu/g for the cold rolled sample to below 0.5 Oe and 0.15 emu/g for the sample annealed at 950°C, respectively.

In this study, to investigate effects of tin addition on the microstructures and corrosion properties, Zn-1Mg-xSn (x = 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 wt.%) ternary zinc alloys were prepared. The experimental results indicated that the Zn-1Mg-2.0 wt.% Sn alloy has the better mechanical properties compared with pure zinc and Zn-1Mg alloy. The tensile strength of the alloy material is 173.2±3.7 MPa, the yield strength is 120.7±2.4 MPa, the elongation is 5.64±0.08% and the hardness is 76.9±0.8 HV. The average degradation rate of the alloys immersion in SBF solution for 60 days is 0.16±0.03 mm/year, and the Zn-1Mg-2.0 wt.% Sn alloy hemolysis rate is only 0.81±0.02%. It is confirmed that the addition of tin is effective to improve the mechanical properties and degradation of Zn-1Mg alloy. It may be a candidate of the clinical application requirements of the degradable implant materials in orthopedics.

The lap joint welding of Al 3003 alloy by stationary shoulder friction stir welding (SSFSW) was performed under the conditions of tool rotation and welding speed, and it was confirmed that the welding was performed under all conditions. The tunnel defects and pores were formed in the weld zone at the lowest tool rotation and welding speed, and it is increased, the weld surface has been improved. At the same tool rotation speed at the welding speed is increased, the grain size was refined in the stir zone (SZ) and thus the hardness increased by about 14% compared to the base metal. The tensile shear strength is measured to be 10 kN or more under most conditions, and in the 4000 rpm with high heat input, the shear tensile strength was measured relatively lower than other conditions due to excessive heat input of the material.

The effect of TiC content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a nanocrystalline Fe-Mn alloy was investigated by XRD analysis, TEM observation, and mechanical tests. A sintered Fe-Mn alloy sample with nano-sized crystallites was obtained using spark plasma sintering. Crystallite size, which is used as a hardening mechanism, was measured by X-ray diffraction peak analysis. It was observed that the addition of TiC influenced the average size of crystallites, resulting in a change in austenite stability. Thus, the volume fraction of austenite at room temperature afterthe sintering process was also modified by the TiC addition. The martensite transformation during cooling was suppressed by adding TiC, which lowered the martensite start temperature. The plastic behavior and the strain-induced martensite kinetics formed during plastic deformation are discussed with compressive stress-strain curves and numerical analysis for the transformation kinetics.

The research comprises a discussion about a formation of intermetallic phase with stoichiometric composition Fe2Ti, called Laves phase, and influence of chromium on the whole structure containing this phase by means of comparison of the two alloys. A base Fe35Ni35Ti30 alloy was used as a reference and then compared with a Fe-Ni-Ti chromium doped - Fe30Ni35Ti30Cr5 alloy. The study of microstructure performed with scanning electron microscope enabled to distinguish different phases. These regions are rich in mixture of Fe-Ni and Ti-Ni elements. The identified phases are Fe2Ti and Ni3Ti which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and simultaneously it is consistent with energy dispersive spectroscopy results. Differential scanning calorimetry confirmed also multi-phase composition. As a result different hardness was measured for these phases using nanoindentation. The overall hardness was established using the Vickers method.

Opis:
Contemporary materials engineering requires the use of materials characterised by high mechanical properties, as these precisely properties determine the choice of material for parts of machinery and equipment. Owing to these properties it is possible to reduce the weight and, consequently, the consumption of both material and energy. Trying to meet these expectations, the designers are increasingly looking for solutions in the application of magnesium alloys as materials offering a very beneficial strength-to-weight ratio. However, besides alloying elements, the properties are to a great extent shaped by the solidification conditions and related structure. The process of structure formation depends on the choice of casting method forced by the specific properties of casting or by the specific intended use of final product. The article presents a comparison of AZ91 magnesium alloys processed by different casting technologies. A short characteristic was offered for materials processed by the traditional semi-continuous casting process, which uses the solidification rates comprised in a range of 5 - 20⁰C/s, and for materials made in the process of Rapid Solidification, where the solidification rate can reach 106⁰C/s. As a result of the casting process, a feedstock in the form of billets and thin strips was obtained and was subjected next to the process of plastic forming. The article presents the results of structural analysis of the final product. The mechanical properties of the ø7 mm extruded rods were also evaluated and compared.

The paper presents the results of studies on the effect of the AlSi17Cu5 alloy overheating to a temperature of 920°C and modification with phosphorus (CuP10) on the resulting mechanical (HB, Rm, R0.2) and plastic (A5 and Z) properties. It has been shown that, so-called, "time-thermal treatment" (TTT) of an alloy in the liquid state, consisting in overheating the metal to about 250°C above Tliq., holding at this temperature by 30 minutes improves the mechanical properties. It has also been found that overheating of alloy above Tliq. enhances the process of modification, resulting in the formation of fine-grain structure. The primary silicon crystals uniformly distributed in the eutectic and characteristics of the \alfa(Al) solution supersaturated with alloying elements present in the starting alloy composition (Cu, Fe) provide not only an increase of strength at ambient temperature but also at elevated temperature (250°C).

Application of the silumins expands together with nowadays tendency to reduction of design structures mass. Technological and mechanical properties of Al-Si casting alloys depend mainly from structure of eutectic mixture, which is modified in result of introduction of micro alloying elements to liquid alloy, and that is why proper use of knowledge on crystallization to control of crystallization kinetics of produced alloys to optimize obtained structure is a significant factor leading to improvement of quality of the castings. In the paper one depicts use of the ATND method (thermal-voltage-derivative analysis) and regression analysis to assessment of quality of the EN AC-43300 alloy modified with strontium on stage of its preparation, in aspect of obtained mechanical properties (R0,02, R0,2, Rm, A5). The main of this paper is to study the microstructure and physical properties of the Fe75B10Si10Cr5 in condition after being produced. The sample was prepared as cylindrical rod with a diameter of 3 mm. The rod was produced using the arc melting method with a suction casting option. It was found that produced alloy was nanocrystalline with average grains of about 15 nm. Due to the different cooling rates in the inner and outer part of the rod, variable sizes of dendrites in the material were observed. The presence of the dendrites was also confirmed on the surface by AFM investigations. The average roughness calculated for chosen profile of the examined area was 6 nm and average hardness of the material equals 844 HV. The mechanical properties were determined in respect to the Oliver-Pharr method. Young’s modulus of the Fe75B10Si10Cr5 calculated from load-displacement curve equals 128 GPa. Magnetic properties of the sample were measured by the vibrating sample magnetometer. The coercivity was equaled 2.184 kA/m, which is relatively low. It means that the Fe75B10Si10Cr5 alloy is magnetically soft.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of physicochemical and mechanical properties of the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy with surface modified by formation of a diffusive nitrocarburized layer deposited in a low-temperature plasma process. The main aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of steam sterilization and exposure to Ringer’s solution on the utility properties of the alloy. Methods: Based on the study of the microstructure, roughness, wettability, resistance to pitting corrosion, ion infiltration and mechanical properties, the usefulness of the proposed method of surface treatment for clinical application was proven. Results: Deposition of the nitrocarburized layer increased the surface roughness and surface hardness, but also reduced the contact angle, and corrosion resistance with respect to the polished surfaces. The nitrocarburized layer is a barrier against the infiltration of ions to the solution and sterilization and exposure to Ringer solution have greater effect on the physicochemical properties rather than on the mechanical ones. Conclusion: It was found that sterilization, and exposure to Ringer’s solution greatly affect the change of physicochemical properties rather than mechanical properties for both nitrocarburized layers and the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy of mechanically polished surface.
