    W słynnym tekście What Metaphors Mean Donald Davidson zaproponował niezwykle nowatorskie podejście do zagadnienia metafory. Stwierdził mianowicie, że nie przysługuje jej żadne inne znaczenie poza znaczeniem dosłownym. Zerwał tym samym z tradycyjnym przekonaniem – podzielanym przez fi lozofów i lingwistów – że metafora posiada dodatkowe znaczenie fi guratywne, w którym jest zakodowana treść poznawcza. Przekonanie to, według Davidsona, wynika z błędnego utożsamienia domniemanego znaczenia z efektem, jaki metafora wywołuje w odbiorcy – z myślami, jakie prowokuje, podobieństwami, które pomaga dostrzec. Metafora, twierdzi Davidson – tak jak żart, obraz czy uderzenie kogoś w głowę – znajduje się poza granicami semantyki i jest kwestią użycia. Artykuł zestawia teorię metafory Davidsona z jej interpretacją dokonaną przez Richarda Rorty’ego, który czyni z niej fundament swojej szeroko zakrojonej wizji zmian słowników składających się na historię ludzkiej myśli. Według autorki, interpretacja Rorty’ego, chociaż śmiała i kontrowersyjna, jest mimo to przekonująca, niezwykle płodna i oferuje cenny wgląd w rozumienie działania metafory.

    Opis:
    Celem artykułu jest analiza, uzasadnienie i wyjaśnienie Donalda Davidsona przyczynowej teorii metafory z punktu widzenia całości jego poglądów filozoficznych. Poglądy te tworzą spójny system obejmujący, poza semantyką i teorią interpretacji, m.in. teorię poznania, teorię działania oraz teorię racjonalności. Proponując przyczynową teorię metafory, Davidson nie odwołał się bezpośrednio do własnej teorii znaczenia, starając się uzasadnić odrzucenie pojęć znaczenia metaforycznego oraz prawdy metaforycznej na gruncie potocznego rozumienia pojęć semantycznych. W artykule argumentuje się, że przyczynowa teoria metafory stanowi uzupełnienie systemu Davidsona, a ponadto że teoria ta ujęta przez pryzmat całego systemu pozwala wyjaśnić rolę metafor nie tylko w literaturze i poezji, lecz także w naukach przyrodniczych, prawie, religii i naukach społecznych.
    The aim of the paper is to analyze, clarify and explain Donald Davidson’s causal theory of metaphor form the viewpoint of his philosophical views which constitute coherent philosophical system comprising not only semantics and theory of interpretation, but epistemology, theory of action, and theory of rationality as well. Proposing his own theory of metaphor Davidson did not refer to his philosophy, and justified his rejection of the notions of metaphorical meaning and metaphorical truth on the ground of common, pre-theoretical views on meaning and other semantic notions. I argue that the causal theory of metaphor fits perfectly Davidson’s philosophical system and from the point of view of his system it is easy to explain the role of metaphor not only in literature and poetry, but in sciences, law, religion, and social sciences.

    In his article What metaphors means Donald Davidson points out that there is an "error and confusion" in claiming "that a metaphor has, in addition to its literal sense or meaning, another sense or meaning". Metaphor has no special meaning, says Davidson and gives a number of arguments to support his controversial thesis. "If a metaphor has a special cognitive content, why should it be so difficult or impossible to set it out?" – he asks rhetorically. Davidson makes many remarks about the effects of a metaphor; he shows that metaphor belongs exclusively to the domain of use and denies that the metaphorical sentences have any special cognitive content. "For a metaphor says only what shows on its face – usually a patent falsehood or an absurd truth... given in the literal meaning of the words". In the first part of my paper, I analyse Davidson’s concept of metaphor in terms of his own assumptions. First, I argue that Davidson narrows the commonsense use of “meaning”, which is much wider than he makes it out to be. Secondly, if metaphors belong exclusively to the domain of use, it is only when language is used in a peculiar, untypical way (drawing our attention to the paradoxical coincidence of words within metaphor) that a sentence can be considered metaphorical. If so, all we do is violate the everyday use of language, or even modify its rules, and let the context influence the meaning of words within the metaphor. We don't make those words mean something other than they usually mean. The last part of my paper deals with Davidson's claim that interpretation is the work of imagination and creation. I argue that the understanding of metaphor has a dynamic structure. If metaphorical sentences say something with suggestive indefiniteness, it is because metaphor is a kind of task that lies before a reader or a listener, a variant of ancient gnome. It is true that it is all about the effect but usually the effect is not instantaneous. Following Coleridge, I view understanding in terms of growth. It leads an individual to undertake an attempt to grasp certain objective truths. What we notice thanks to extraordinary metaphors in literature and philosophy is that they illuminate us somehow. Our task is then to express this effect in language. Therefore, contrary to what Davidson claims, the possibility of multiple interpretations do not necessarily question the objective cognitive content of a metaphor.

Analiza odnosi se prije svega na leksičku razinu teksta i metaforička značenja izabranih fraza.
    The unique epic stories written by Kapuściński show his individual style which is the great challenge for all translators. This article represents some of the translation solutions in two translations of the Polish reportage "Podróże z Herodotem" by Ryszard Kapuściński: the Serbian one "Putovanja s Herodotom" by Biserka Rajčić and the English one "Travels with Herodotus" by Klara Główczewska. The analysis is connected mostly with the lexical layer and the metaphorical meaning of chosen phrases.
