Opis:
Upper Miocene (~6 Ma) sediments from a north-south transect of Ocean Drilling Program Holes 848B, 849B, 850B, 851B across the equator in the Eastern Pacific Ocean record an episode of unusual skeletal variability associated with the silicoflagellate Bachmannocena diodon subsp. nodosa (Bukry) Bukry, 1987. Skeletons in this plexus persisted for between 55,000 and 75,000 years and include an arch across a 2-sided basal ring, a highly unusual morphology for the genus. Groups of skeletal morphotypes were common within the plexus episode, and occur in a systematic sequence that is consistent between sites. As a result of this study, silicoflagellates previously placed in the genus Neonaviculopsis Locker and Martini, 1986 are now considered part of the Bachmannocena diodon subsp. nodosa plexus.

Opis:
Variable position of genital ducts and pores (PGP) was found in 23.3% of five months old tapeworms obtained as a result of administering to rats a dose of 6 cysticercoids proceeding from the third generation of inbred Hymenolepis diminuta - WMS il1. In tapeworms coming from generations no 18 and 32 PGP changes were reported only in 7.5 month, with only 5.9% of strobilas in the 32 generation group being characterized by this feature. These results indicate a time shift with respect to the appearance of PGP changes in tapeworms proceeding from latter inbred generations to a further period of tapeworm invasion in rats. The number of PGP changes is positively correlated with the number of type 2p1a proglottids (two testes on the poral and one on the aporal side). The average number of type Op3a proglottids increases with the number of generations. In 5-month old tapeworms of unilateral PGP coming from generation no 3, 18 and 32 it amounts to 5.9%, 6.6% and 8.1 %, respectively.

Opis:
The main aim of this study was to describe the variation between the populations of the dwarf mountain pine Pinus mugo Turra based on the morphological and anatomical traits of their needles, and to investigate the relationship between the observed variation and environmental conditions (altitude and substrate).Two-year-old needles were collected from 180 individuals of six populations of P. mugo growing in the Tatra Mts. Two populations were classified as dense, located at 1360–1450 m altitude, and the remaining four formed loose clusters and were situated at 1500–1650 m altitude. Four of the populations are growing on granite and two on a limestone substrate. The natural variation of 10 morpho-anatomical and 3 synthetic needle traits was measured. In addition to descriptive statistics, the analyses of variance (ANOVA) with a Tukey test and principal component analysis were computed. We also estimated Pearson correlation coefficients for the examined needle traits and altitude as well as substrate. Our results indicate that the P. mugo populations differ significantly with regard to the investigated traits for which the Trzydniowiański Wierch population was the most distinct. The observed pattern of variability is largely caused by differences in stomatal traits and these features are positive correlated with altitude. Additionally, populations growing on granite have larger values for most of the examined traits compared to populations growing on limestone.

Opis:
The article describes the shape of cones of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) using the fourth-degree polynomial fitting function. The material was derived from the seed orchard of the Barycz Forest District. The curves were used to calculate the area and volume of single cones. It was not possible to generalize the formulas to calculate the surface and volume of larch cones using the described method, due to the large variability of the empirical coefficients of equations. Finally, to calculate the area and volume of cones, the formula to determine the solid figure of cone was used. The constant αs of 0.43 was introduced to the formula. Calculated volume values were compared to actual volumes measured by a water-filled burette. The mean surface area of larch cones was calculated from the forming function and it was 780 mm2 and the volume was 2434 mm3.Values calculated from cone formulas after taking into account the αs and constants (0.68 and 0.53) were 783 mm2 and 2415 mm3, respectively. The outer and inner surfaces of the seed scales coming from the central part of the larch cones were photographed using Quanta 200 scanning microscope. Specific features of the scales were measured using the Multi Scan Base program. It was found that the outer and inner surfaces of the larch scales, such as pine and fir, were different. On the outer side, scales are formed by thick-walled cells with visible protruding trichomes. And on the inside at the location of the wings and seeds are visible thin-walled cells with jagged cell walls. On the surface of the scales, the appearance of long stem cells, resembling threads, that are absent on pine and fir seed scales was observed.
