Opis:
This research was focusing on shortening the process of Zirconium hydroxide (Zr(OH)4) synthesis to get a more efficient process. In the earlier method, Zr(OH)4 was produced through ZOC, which was the product of Na2ZrO3 reacted with HCl. While this study offers a new method to synthesize Zr(OH)4 through the hydrolysis process of sodium zirconate (Na2ZrO3), removing the leaching step of Na2ZrO3 with HCl. The hydrolysis process of Na2ZrO3 was carried out in a multistage stirred reactor at 70°C. The multistage hydrolysis process occurred in 13 stages with 4000 grams of feed and 890 liters of water. This process produced 2500 grams of Zr(OH)4. Then the impurities analysis was done using UV-Vis and atomic absorption spectroscopy (SAA). The UV-Vis analysis was done to analyze Si concentration, while the atomic absorption spectroscopy (SAA) was done to analyze Na concentration. Si and Na concentrations could decrease to 23.98 μg/ml and 1.05 μg/ml, respectively. The Zr(OH)4 contained in the residue was characterized using X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Then, the calcination process of Zr(OH)4 was done at 300°C and 400°C for 1 hour, and characterized using XRD. The XRD result shows crystals of zirconium titanium oxide or srilankite, and SiO2 crystals that are separated from ZrO2 or TiO2 crystals. Surface analysis was done using Scanning Electron Microscope – Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDX), the result shows that the hydrolysis process at the 3rd, 7th, and 13th stages have different amorphous crystals with bright colors. At the 13th hydrolysis stage, Zr concentration increased to 63.38%, and Si concentration decreased. Thus, the shorter process of Zr(OH)4 synthesis has been done successfully.

Opis:
In this study, energetic behaviors of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-coated zirconium (Zr) powders were investigated using thermogravimetric analyzer-differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC). PVDF-coated Zr powder had 1.5 times higher heat flow than ZrO2-passivated Zr powder. PVDF-coated Zr powder had a Zr-F compound formed on its surface by its strong chemical bond. This compound acted as an oxidation-protecting layer, providing an efficient combustion path to inner pure Zr particle while thermal oxidation was progressing at the same time. PVDF coating layers also made thermal reaction start at a lower temperature than ZrO2-passivated Zr powder. It was obtained that the surface PVDF coating layer evaporated at approximately 673 K, but the surface oxide layer fully reacted at approximately 923 K by DSC analysis. Hence, Zr powders showed enhanced energetic properties by the PVDF-coated process.

Calcination and microwave-assisted hydrothermal processing of precipitated zirconium dioxide are compared. Characterization of synthesized products of these two technologies is presented. The infiuence of thermal treatment up to 1200oC on the structural and spectroscopic properties of the so-obtained zirconium dioxide is examined. It was found that initial crystallization of material inhibits the crystal growth up to the 800oC (by means of XRD and TEM techniques), while the material crystallized from amorphous hydroxide precursor at 400oC, exhibits 26 nm sized crystallites already. It was found using the TG technique that the temperature range 100–200oC during the calcination process is equivalent to a microwave hydrothermal process by means of water content. Mass loss is estimated to be about 18%. Based on X-ray investigations it was found that the initial hydroxide precursor is amorphous, however, its luminescence activity suggests the close range ordering in a material.

In this work the microstructure analysis of composite from ZrO2 – Ti system were presented. For the preparation of the composite samples nanometric ZrO2 powder stabilized by 3 mol% of Y2O3 and micrometric titanium powder were used. The composites with 10 vol.% addition of titanium particles were prepared by slip casting method. The sintering process was conducted at 1450°C with 2 hours’ dwell time, in the inert atmosphere of argon. The microstructure observations were carried out with the use of SEM and STEM microscopes. The quantitative analysis and stereological characterization were performed. The SEM and STEM observations allowed characterizing the microstructure of composite samples. Especially, the interface between titanium particles and zirconia matrix was described. The growth of the zirconia grains around the Ti rich areas was observed. The increase of the zirconia grains size results from the reaction on the interface between titanium particle and zirconia matrix during the sintering process.

In this work the results of trials aimed at selecting optimal settings of the explosion welding process of 10 mm thick zirconium (Zr 700 grade) plates with carbon steel (P265GH grade) are presented. A bimetal Zr-steel and trimetal Zr-Ti-steel and Zr-Zr-steel where: 2 mm Ti and 3 mm Zr were used as a technological intermediate layer facilitating the bonding. The research was carried out for as-bonded joints, i.e. immediately following explosion welding. Structural analyses in leyers near the interface were focused on the characteristic of the joint interface. Mechanical properties of the obtained clads were measured with shearing, peel and lateral bending tests. Systematic measurements of microhardness distribution enabled analyzing the strain-hardening of the material resulting from explosion welding both at the bond interface zone and throughout the whole section of the clad. It was established that during explosion welding with 10 mm Zr 700 the application of the 2 mm or 3 mm thick interlayers of Zr70 or Ti grade 1, respectively, allows obtaining a joint with good mechanical properties and optimal characteristic of the interface.

Opis:
Slip casting is one of the most popular shaping method in ceramic technology which allows producing a large number of elements in small period of time. This shaping technique gives a possibility to fabricate ceramic or composite materials such as ZrO2-Ti. Ti with its properties (low density, high melting point, high-temperature strength, good corrosion resistance and others) combine with ZrO2 (high flexure strength, high compression resistance and very high KIC) can be considered for different applications as constructional and functional materials. For the preparation of such composite nanometric zirconium oxide powder stabilized by 3 mol% Y2O3 and micrometric titanium powder were used. Water-based slurries with 35, 40, 45 and 50 vol.% solid phase content were prepared with 3, 10 and 15 vol.% addition of titanium powder. Zeta potential and pH of prepared slurries were considered. The pH changes were tested as a function of Ti content. The viscosity of the prepared slurries was measured. The sedimentation tests for selected slurries were performed. The casting rate for slurry of 35% solid phase with 10 vol.% Ti was examined. These measurements showed good stability of slurries. With the increasing of the solid phase concentration the density of the green bodies increased. However, the increase of the content of Ti powder reduced the density of green body samples. For selected samples the SEM observations was carried out. Composites produced by slip casting were characterized by a homogenous distribution of Ti particles in the ZrO2 matrix.

Implant and a tooth supported dentures are avoided by dentists because of uneven distribution of occlusal loads between a stiffer implant and a more pliable tooth. The hypothesis was that a 3-point all-ceramic bridge supported on a natural second premolar tooth and a two-pieces typical implant bears safely mastication loads. The finite element analysis showed that the implant splinted by all-ceramic zirconium bridge with the second premolar was safe under lateral mastication load, but there was found an overload at wide zone of bone tissue around the implant under the load of 800 N. The patients can safely masticate, but comminution of hard food should be avoided and they should be instructed that after such an indiscretion they need to contact a dental professional, because, in spite of integrity of the prosthesis, the bone tissue around the implant may fail and there is a hazard of intrusion of the tooth.

Zirconium alloys used widely in nuclear industry as fuel claddings are prone to violent oxidation in water steam atmosphere in the case of loss of coolant accident (LOCA). Accompanying generation of large quantities of heat and explosive gaseous hydrogen may lead to destruction of nuclear core. As the safety of nuclear installations is of primary importance, intensive research works are conducted on the development of so-called accident tolerant fuels much less prone to oxidation. In this paper, the application of external zirconium-silicide coatings deposited by magnetron sputtering is proposed. The preliminary results of their synthesis and studies of air oxidation properties at elevated temperatures are presented.

The objective of the current work was to investigate the effectiveness and mechanism of nitrate removal from an aqueous solution by adsorption using metal (Zr4+)loaded chitosan and Bentonite beads (Cs-Bn-Zr). The study was carried out in a batch system, and the effect of the critical factors on the adsorption performance, such as contact time, initial nitrate anion concentration, and adsorbent dosage, were investigated. In addition, the adsorption equilibrium models of the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms were evaluated. The modified adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and analysis with an energy-dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX). The results demonstrated that at 0.2 g of CS-Bn-Zr adsorbent with an initial concentration of 50 mg/l and a contact time of 120 minutes, the maximum removal of nitrate ions was found to be 97.28%. The result demonstrated that the maximum adsorption capacity of nitrite ions on the manufactured bead was 110.46 mg/g. The Freundlich model was shown to be the most effective for the adsorbate of nitrate. The pseudo–first-order model fits the adsorption kinetic data well.

The research into the influence of radiation on the process of hydrogen accumulation and zirconium oxidation as a result of heterogeneous processes taking place in contact of zirconium and Zr + 1 per cent Nb alloy with water vapour was conducted. Due to such contact the contribution of radiation processes into radiolysis and thermo-radiolysis of water decomposition processes was revealed. It was determined that radiation-heterogenic processes in contact of zirconium materials with water invoked earlier accumulation of hydrogen originating from both the protective oxidation film on surface formation and destructive oxidation of metallic materials.

The basic factor limiting the use of glasses is their unsatisfactory mechanical strength. The improvement of the mechanical strength of glasses is usually obtained by applying their respective thin surface layers. The object of the research was glass coated with zirconium oxide. For the application of zirconium oxide layer, dip-coating method was used. The resulting materials were subjected to detailed examination of the microstructure (SEM), and mechanical tests (Vickers hardness and modulus of elasticity). In order to evaluate the optical characteristics, the tests were performed by UV/VIS. The thickness of the overlying layers were determined using the method of ellipsometry. The study showed that the obtained sol-gel layer of zirconium oxide (IV) on glasses influence the improvement of the mechanical properties. It has been shown that the applied layers have high adhesion to the substrate.

Small addition of zirconium does not change significantly the as cast and heat-treated microstructure of investigated alloys except to reduce the SDAS and grain size of primary α-aluminium phases. Addition of zirconium up to 0.14 wt. percentage increases the hardness of investigated alloys in as cast conditions. The increase in the hardness of samples after various solid solution times can correlate very well with the formation of small needle like coherent Al3Zr particles.

Dynamic charge carrier transport behavior in the zirconium (Zr) oxide was investigated based on the frequency-dependent capacitance-voltage (C-V) and temperature-dependent current-voltage (I-V) measurements. The Zr oxide was formed on the ZIRLO and newly developed zirconium-based alloy (NDZ) by corrosion in the PWR-simulated loop at 360°C. The corrosion test for 90 days showed that the NDZ exhibits better corrosion resistance than ZIRLO alloy. Based on the C-V measurement, dielectric constant values for the Zr oxide was estimated to be 11.28 and 11.52 for the ZIRLO and NDZ. The capacitance difference between low and high frequency was larger in the ZIRLO than in the NDZ, which was attributed to more mobile electrical charge carriers in the oxide layer on the ZIRLO alloy. The current through the oxide layers on the ZIRLO increased more drastically with increasing temperature than on the NDZ, which indicating that more charge trap sites exist in the ZIRLO than in NDZ. Based on the dynamiccharge carrier transport behavior, it was concluded that the electrical charge carrier transport within the oxide layers was closely related with the corrosion behavior of the Zr alloys.
