Opis:
A recently investigated Zechstein Limestone (Ca1, Wuchiapingian) bryozoan fauna from the Polish part of the Southern Permian Basin (SW Poland) is dominated volumetrically and taxonomically by fenestellids. In total six species from five genera are recognized, comprising two species of trepostomes belonging to Dyscritella Girty, 1911 and four fenestellids attributed to Kingopora Morozova, 1970, Kalvariella Morozova, 1970, Acanthocladia King, 1849 and Spinofenestella Termier and Termier, 1971. The greatest biodiversity of the bryozoans in the Ca1 profiles studied is within the slope facies where large, fan-shaped and funnel-shaped reticulate fenestellid colonies up to 10 cm high dominate. In contrast, bryozoans in the marginal (proximal) parts of the basin mostly comprise trepostomes, represented by encrusting plate-like or coil-shaped colonies of Dyscritella Girty, and commonly broken branched colonies of Acanthocladia King. The changes in the biotic composition of the bryozoans and the presence of a dominant colony growth form in the stratigraphical profile of the Ca1 reflect the depositional environment and water energy. These factors stimulate the successive stages of the development of the biota and their settlement, marked by the rich productid-fenestellid assemblages typical of the offshore setting, with the maximum depth in the middle part of the Ca1 in the Grodziec Syncline. The proximal tempestites and foreshore facies of the upper part of the Ca1 (Leszczyna Syncline) terminate the sedimentary cycle of the Ca1, with the remnant, broken bryozoans of Acanthocladia and fenestellids. The relationship between the taxonomic composition, colony growth-patterns, associated biota, and sedimentary structures points to slow sedimentation rate on slope and basin floor of the Ca1 carbonate platform. The fenestellids which are dominated in the studied biota by the reticulate and pinnate colonies of Spinofenestella, Kingopora, Kalvariella and Acanthocladia mark a close palaeogeographical link with the Zechstein (Ca1) bryozoans of Great Britain, Germany and the southern Baltic region.

Opis:
The stable oxygen and sulphur isotope ratios of 52 anhydrite samples from three Zechstein anhydrite units (Lower Anhydrite, Upper Anhydrite and Basal Anhydrite) of West Poland show d18O values vs. VSMOW in the range of 9.4 to 15.5% (mean of 12.6 š1.3%), and d34S values vs. VCDT between 9.6 to 12.6%o (mean of 11.4 š0.6%o). A generally uniform distribution pattern of both isotopic values throughout the section, although with some random variation, implies that sulphate ions were sufficiently supplied and the basin was open during sulphate deposition. There is a slight stratigraphic differentiation of both the d18O and d34S values: the highest mean values are shown by the Upper Anhydrite and the lowest average values occur in the Basal Anhydrite. The correlation between d18 O and 8 S values is statistically significant only in case of the Basal Anhydrite. A wide range of oxygen isotopic ratios (from 11.6 to 25. l%o), with only several samples having d18O values that fall within the range of late Permian seawater, have been recorded in anhydrite cements and nodules that occur in the Main Dolomite rocks. Sulphur isotope ratios of anhydrite cements (range of 7.6 to 12.9%o, average of 10.7 š1.4%o) tend to reflect the late Permian sulphur isotopic signature of sulphate in seawater. The higher ranges of d18O and d34S values of anhydrite cements and nodules in the Main Dolomite compared to the underlying and overlying anhydrites are due to diagenetic resetting. The conversion of gypsum to anhydrite (often very early and under negligible cover) evidently did not affect the primary marine stratigraphic sulphur isotope composition of the sulphate deposits.

The M-29 exploratory borehole and operating well is located on the Mogilno I deposit in the south-eastern section of the Mogilno Salt Dome (Fig. 2). It was drilled down to the depth of 1,751 m in 2014. The borehole penetrated the evaporites of the Upper Permian (Zechstein) and a sequence of clay-mudstone-sand formations of the Lower Triassic. 11 lithostratigraphic members of the Zechstein salt series, belonging to cyclothems PZ-2, PZ-3, and PZ-4, were separated in the core subjected to our analysis. The salt deposit of the borehole M-29 area had been formed tectonically. The borehole cuts through a deep syncline, filled with the sediments of cyclothems PZ3 and PZ4. The syncline is limited on the ceiling and floor sides by anticlines composed mainly of Na2 rock salt. As a result of the uplift of the two anticline intrusions, the salt layers became strongly folded and formed very steeply. The borehole pierces through the same members several times. Many divisions are reduced in thickness or completely wedged out. No ceiling layers of cycle PZ-4 or evaporites, being older than Older Halite (Na2), were found in the profile. As a result of halokinetic and tectonic deformations, the salt layers became extremely folded and steeply arranged. The layer dip varies from 35° to 90°, mostly 60-80°. Numerous changes of the dip angle and multiple folding are demonstrated by the fact that the borehole often penetrated the same members.
Został on odwiercony w 2014 r. do głębokości 1751 m. Otwór nawierca ewaporaty późnego permu (cechsztynu) oraz kompleks utworów ilasto-mułowcowo- piaszczystych dolnego triasu. W analizowanym rdzeniu wydzielono 11 ogniw cechsztyńskiej serii solnej cyklotemów PZ-2, PZ-3 i PZ-4. Złoże solne w rejonie otworu M-29 jest uformowane tektonicznie. Otwór przewierca głęboką synklinę, wypełnioną osadami cyklotemów PZ3 and PZ4. Otwór przewierca kilkakrotnie te same ogniwa.

Opis:
Lateral changes in the thickness of strata and petrophysical parameters within the Zechstein succession (salt pillows and domes) can cause many problems in seismic exploration of the aeolian Rotliegend formations, which are prospective for hydrocarbons. An assessment of the influence of halokinesis on the seismic imaging of the sub-Zechstein strata in NW Poland (Obrzycko–Szamotuły area, to the SW of the Mid-Polish Swell) utilised time-to-depth conversion with different, seismic-geological models. Various, seismic velocities were used in models for the Zechstein and the Mesozoic successions, namely velocities, dependent on the thickness of particular rock successions, on their depths, and velocities, determined from seismic inversion. The results show opposite reflection patterns for the seismic section imaged in the time and depth domains. The synclinal arrangement of the strata boundaries in the depth model is represented by convex-upwards reflection events on the seismic section. The pull-up of reflection events, associated with the sub-Zechstein strata, observed on the seismic sections, is mainly a result of both the greater thickness of the Zechstein salt within the salt structures (pillows, diapirs) and the increase in velocity contrast between the salt body and the Mesozoic strata.

Opis:
Strontium isotope ratios have been determined on 74 anhydrite samples from seven borehole cores in the Polish Zechstein. Five of the borehole cores are located in the basin and isotope results from these samples show a nearly pure marine signal. Results from one borehole core, located near the Zechstein coastline that migrated through time, record a stronger, in consistent influence of continental strontium to a marine base. Intermittent meteoric influence is recorded in anhydrites from other borehole cores close to the carbonate platform that was emergent during the anhydrite deposition. Consistency of isotope values indicates a marine signal and there is a narrow range in consistent values from 87Sr/86Sr near deltasw –215 (0.70702) for the oldest anhydrites and near deltasw –205 (0.70712) for the youngest an hydrites. Comparison with a sea water 87Sr/86Sr curve based on samples in West Texas and a Permian-Triassic boundary value from China shows that the Polish Zechstein in these seven boreholes is latest Permian in age and major deposition represents a short time interval (~2 million years). Strontium isotope ratios reported by other workers indicate some of the younger Zechstein elsewhere indicate even greater continental influence is in agreement with the interpreted sedimentological set ing for those anhydrites.

Opis:
The Upper Permian Zechstein Group contains three gypsum horizons of variable thickness. All of them are affected by gypsum diapirism which is not related to salt diapirism. Best areas for observations and descriptions of this phenomenon are outcrops and mining districts around the Harz Mts. The lowermost gypsum member (A1) is overlain by Main Dolomite (Ca2) of the Stassfurt Formation - dolomite showing mudstone and wackestone textures. The gypsum forms cupolas or elongate ridges up to 50 m high, several km long, and may project through its roof. Above the ridges, the Ca2 roof is thinner or completely removed by slumping and sliding. The uplift of the gypsum started very early before the carbonates were completely lithified. All the ridges strike between 90 and 120°, most likely, drawn out by tectonic forces. The Basal Anhydrite (A2) and the Main Anhydrite (A3) are overlain by rock salt and behave in the same manner. Here, too, only the upper parts of the gypsum are involved in the movements. Reasons of the uplift are high water content of gypsum, additional release of water by the conversion of gypsum to anhydrite and, last not least, bouyancy of the light gypsum mud against compact rock salt or semi-lithified carbonates.

Detailed macroscopic profiling of salt cores from selected wells drilled in the Góra salt diapir (central Poland; Fig. 1, 2) and analyses of bromine content made it possible to define and characterize lithostratigraphic units of the Zechstein (Upper Permian) succession (Fig. 3, 4). Interpretation of relations between the units identified in the studied well sections allowed the first schematic reconstruction of internal structure of top part of the salt trunk (Fig. 5). The principal idea of this reconstruction is probable origin of the Góra diapir as a salt trunk with a recumbent fold at the top (Fig. 6A). Subsequent uplift of the diapir and erosion resulted in removal of significant part of younger salt deposits so only those squeezed into the salt trunk interior escaped the erosion (Fig. 6B). Models of internal structure of salt diapirs are of remarkable practical value as they facilitate proper location of the mining works (e.g. leaching wells, galleries, chambers and caverns) and prediction of possible gas and water hazards.

The assemblage of rare fish microremains of chondrichthyans and actinopterygians from Upper Permian deposits in Karpénai Quarry in northern Lithuania is described in detail for the first time. The deposits are characterized as reflecting a rapid phase of deposition of the Zechstein Limestone, interpreted as on a shallow shelf above storm-wave base in a proximal part of the Polish-Lithuanian Zechstein Basin. The actinopterygian microremains are represented by various teeth and a few scales from mostly palaeonisciforms and pycnodontiforms. The chondrichthyans are represented by various eusela- chian-type scales and a tooth of ?Helodus sp. The low abundance and low species diversity of the fossil assemblages studied may be due to arid palaeoenvironments that caused locally restricted conditions at this palaeogeographical location.

Opis:
Occurrences of borate minerals in the Zechstein salt-bearing deposits of the Kłodawa salt dome (central Poland), and the manner of their development, suggest that the minerals were formed at high temperatures, that considerably exceed the temperature estimated from the thermal gradient (~180°C). Research on rock salt and potassium-magnesium salts containing congolite and boracite, respectively, are consistent with high-temperature processes of transformations affecting the salt rocks in certain sections of the salt dome. The chemical composition of, and daughter minerals occurring in, primary fluid inclusions in halite, originating from the congolite zone, indicated a very high proportion of potassium and magnesium in the brines from which the halite crystallised. The thermal transformations observed in inclusions indicate a halite crystallisation temperature exceeding 420°C. Anhydrite crystals, co-occurring with borate minerals, represent unique features as to the distribution and composition of solid and fluid inclusions. These features indicate crystallisation or recrystallisation in conditions that differed considerably from those typical of the salt dome, with the involvement of solutions of changing chemical compositions. The crystals contain multiple solid inclusions of transparent and non-transparent minerals, among which we have focused on carnallite. The relationships of carnallite with liquid and gaseous phases indicate, as in the congolite zone, migration of very highly concentrated brines with respect to potassium and magnesium, or even transport of carnallite in the form of melt (liquid). Measurements of fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures, within the range from 197.8 to 473.8°C, supported a high-temperature origin for these minerals in hydrothermal conditions.

Limestone-marl alternations constitute a characteristic rock facies within the Zechstein Limestone (Ca1) deposits of the North-Sudetic Basin, Poland. Rhythmites of this type are exposed in a 10-metres section at Nowy Kooeciół, which from the beginning of the last century has been considered representative for this part of the Zechstein basin, and were formerly interpreted as calcareous storm sediments alternating with marls deposited during more quiet conditions. Our results of sedimentological, petrographical and chemical studies suggest that the Nowy Kościół section is a record of distal storm deposits, but that the present-day layering does not precisely reflect the depositional rhythm. Post-depositional changes have overprinted and blurred the original pattern. We propose a model of diagenetic alteration in which dissolution and reprecipitation of calcium carbonate in the shallow subsurface formed new layer boundaries; subsequent modifications during deeper burial followed these early diagenetic changes.

The development of a relatively small and isolated part of the Wuchiapingian, Zechstein Wielichowo Reef was possible owing to a progressive subsidence and frequent sea level fluctuations. Three biofacies were distinguished within the studied object: (1) a shallow-water and highly energetic Acanthocladia biofacies, dominated by bryozoans and crinoids, with poorly preserved porosity, reduced mainly by calcite cementation and compaction; (2) the Horridonia biofacies comprising numerous brachiopods, preferring a moderate depth of water, with comparably poor porosity; and (3) the Fenestella/Kingopora biofacies rich in fossils of the highest variability, related to the deepest and calmest waters, occurring on the top of the profile and showing a significant effective porosity, reaching almost 13%. Among many diagenetic processes altering the reef, several lines of evidence suggest that it was the meteoric diagenesis to enhance its porosity the most extensively. Since no stromatolites are present, the final sea level decrease is interpreted to be rapid, hence creating conditions favourable for the meteoric dissolution. Some intraparticle porosity, however, seems to be of a depositional origin.

Opis:
Two main lithostratigraphic units of clay-bearing rock salt, the Tonmittelsalz of the Leine formation (z3) and Tonbrockensalz of the Aller formation (z4), occur in the German Zechstein (Upper Permian) succession. These units could be equivalents of the Brown Zuber (Na3t) and Red Zuber (Na4t) in the PZ3 and PZ4 cyclothemes of the Polish Zechstein basin. Mineralogical-geochemical investigations of the Tonmittelsalz and Tonbrockensalz were carried out on samples taken from a deep borehole in the Gorleben salt dome in Northern Germany. Even though these units are characterized by a similar mineralogical composition of mainly halite with subordinate quantities of anhydrite and clay minerals, variations in mineral content and fabric were observed. The older Tonmittelsalz rocks document some primary features like chevrons in halite crystals and idiomorphic halite crystals in clay-bearing layers. A brecciated fabric and a vague layering, shown by polarizing microscopy and CT-imaging, indicate a deformation of the younger Tonbrockensalz, which is folded in the deep borehole Go1004. Nevertheless, internal fabrics of clay clasts in the z4TS show an early brecciated and folded fabric during sedimentation or diagenesis. Main component chemistry and REE are comparable in both units, but significant differences were observed for trace element and isotope data. The z3TM rocks contain higher values of trace elements like Liand higher values in REE, while the z4TS rocks are enriched in K. Isotope data of anhydrites of both units correspond to those of the Zechstein. The δ18O values of samples from the Tonbrockensalz display a relatively large range (8.5-11.9‰) and may indicate changing conditions during its formation. In contrast, only minor variations in the δ34S of samples from the Tonbrockensalz and in both isotope compositions of samples from the Tonmittelsalz have been documented.

Opis:
Three-dimensional modeling of the limestone and dolomite distribution in an Upper Permian (Zechstein) stromatolite-bryozoan reef, ~500 m in diameter and 35 m thick (77 borehole cores, 172 data points), shows that dolomite occurs as laterally and vertically discontinuous intervals. The prevailing mineral phases are near-stoichiometric dolomite and Mg-free calcite (370 XRD and 274 XRF analyses). Both δ13C and δ18O (526 analyses) show a spread of ~10‰ and co-vary with the mineralogy; the heaviest dolomite and calcite δ13C differ by ~1.5‰. Diagenetic modifications caused by flowing meteoric fluids could account for the observed “inverted J” trend of stable and the radiogenic signature of 87Sr/86Sr (23 analyses), but neither vertical nor horizontal gradients occur in the reef modeled. Because the dolomite geometries are incompatible with those predicted by fluid flow models, and the limestone-dolomite difference in δ13C overlaps estimates of isotope fractionation associated with Mg content, the dolomite studied was a depositional Very High Mg Calcite recrystallized to dolomite in a semi-closed diagenetic system rather than a Low Mg Calcite transformed by a dolomitization process. The isotope pattern suggests biogenic fractionation and/or loss of heavy stable C and O and light Sr isotopes during diagenesis.

Opis:
This study deals with the spatial distribution and the PAAS-normalized patterns of rare earth elements (REE) studied by ICP-MS in the Kupferschiefer series of SW Poland. The most characteristic feature is a progressive enrichment in REE content (including Y and Sc) outward from the rocks with pyritic and Pb-Zn mineralisation, across the rocks with copper mineralisation, towards the oxidized (Rote Fäule) areas. The same trend can also be observed with respect to LREE, MREE and HREE. Whereas REE distribution diagrams for shales with pyrite and Pb-Zn mineralisation are almost flat, diagrams for shales with hematite and copper mineralisation are convex-upward and the strongest convexity is attributed to the transition from hematitic alteration to copper-rich rocks. REE distribution diagrams normalized to PAAS show strong MREE enrichment relative to LREE and HREE, which is typically the highest in the hematite zone, lower in shale with copper mineralisation, and the lowest in shales with Pb-Zn and pyrite mineralisation. The systematic increase in the concentration of REE towards the Rote Fäule, and the strong enrichment in MREE in the transition zone are indicative of variable intensity of leaching and formation of the REE enrichments (including MREE) by MREE>HREE>LREE fluids, as evidenced by the MREE-enriched signatures. Overprinting of secondary enrichments over the original REE pattern due to redistribution along the pathways of expanding fluids are postulated to account for the apparent differences in the distribution and concentration of REE (including the MREE-enriched trend) between the oxidized rocks, copper-bearing rocks, and reduced lithologies barren in copper.

The Mid-Polish Swell (MPS), uplifted in the latest Cretaceous-earliest Tertiary at the site of the earlier Permian-Mesozoic Mid-Polish Trough (MPT), is adjoined to the south-west by a chain of salt diapirs which are probably underlain by a system of late Variscan deep faults in the pre-Zechstein basement. The Mesozoic reactivation of this system is responsible for the rapid thickness increase towards the axis of theMPT. Consequently, it may be regarded as the southwestern boundary of the MPT. During the phase of inversion, this system caused the mobilization of the Zechstein salt, the formation of the chain of diapirs and also (indirectly) the uplift of the regional unit of the MPS.

Opis:
Dolomitisation was the main diagenetic process in the Upper Permian Zechstein Limestone of the Wolsztyn High-dolomite cementation (“over-dolomitisation”) also occurred. The rocks studied usually have a mixed mineralogy and represent a continuous spectrum from pure limestone to pure dolomite. This is due to varying degrees of dolomitisation, dolomite cementation and dedolomitisation. There are two main types of dolomite: replacement dolomite (mostly planar unimodal dolosparite mosaics that are mainly fabric-destructive) and cement dolomite (planar isopachous rims and pore-filling non-planar saddle-dolomite crystals). The timing of dolomitisation and dolomite cementation is difficult to ascertain, but comparing petrographical and geochemical data indicates that the reef carbonates were dolomitised shortly after deposition in a near-surface sabkha/seepage-reflux and then in burial systems. It seems that many of the dolomites gain their present isotopic composition when buried in relatively high-temperature conditions, as shown by low oxygen isotopic ratios ( δ18O as low as –9‰ PDB) and the presence of saddle dolomite. No isotopic support for a water-mixing mechanism is documented.

Opis:
Skały Na3t w obu wysadach (Kłodawa i Mogilno) charakteryzują się wyższą średnią zawartością CaO, MgO i Sr w porównaniu z wydzieleniem Na4t, przede wszystkim dzięki wyższemu udziałowi węglanów Ca i Mg (głównie magnezytu) i podrzędnie kalcytu i dolomitu. Zmiany zawartości bromu w profilach opisanego wyżej wydzielenia Na4t oraz w profilach skał zubrowych subcyklotemów cyklotemu PZ4, opróbowanych w wybranych otworach wiertniczych z obszaru Niżu Polskiego wskazują, że środowisko depozycji zubrów ewoluowało od basenu morskiego (dolna część profilu Na4t i osady subcyklotemów PZ4a do PZ4b) do kontynentalnego jeziora solnego (górna część sukcesji Na4t i osady subcyklotemów PZ4c do PZ4e), w którym następowała kumulacja materiału terygenicznego i chlorków wytrąconych głównie z wtórnych, recyklingowych solanek.
The paper presents results of detailed studies of chemical composition of zuber-like rocks of main two zuber lithostratigraphic units of the Polish Zechstein succession: the Brown Zuber (Na3t; PZ3 cyclothem) and the Red Zuber (Na4t; PZ4 cyclothem), as well as of other Zechstein zuber members and formations distinguished in Poland. These rocks were sampled from two salt domes (Kłodawa and Mogilno) and profiles of seven wells. Deposits of the Na3t unit in the Kłodawa dome have a higher content of halite compared with the Na4t unit. Deposits of the latter con - tain more terrigenous material (detrital and clay matter). They are characterized by higher average contents of SiO2 , Al2 O3 , Fe2 O3 and K2O and are enriched with Mn, Rb, Zn and Zr, compared with the Na3t succession. Rocks of the Na3t unit in both the Kłodawa and Mogilno domes are characterized by higher average contents of CaO, MgO and Sr than the deposits of the Na4t unit mainly due to their higher contents of Ca and Mg carbonates (with dominant magnesite) and, subordinately, of calcite and dolomite. Bromine content in the Na3t profiles of both domes is higher than in the Na4t deposits and it is characteristic for primary chlorides precipitated from marine brine. Such bromine concentration was found only in some parts of the Na4t succession. The bromine content <40 ppm, observed in some rocks of the Na4t profile, suggests that they are mixtures of primary and secondary chlorides, produced by recycling (dissolution and precipitation) of formerly accumulated marine salts. The bromine content changes, observed in the above-described Na4t unit profiles, as well as in the zuber profiles of the PZ4 subcyclo - thems, show that depositional environment of the zuber deposits evolved from a marine basin (in the lower part of the Na4t profile and in deposits of the PZ4a and PZ4b subcyclothems) to continental saline lakes (in the upper part of the Na4t succession and in deposits of the PZ4c to PZ4e subcyclothems), which trapped a terrigenous material an d chlorides precipitated mainly from secondary (recycled) brine s. The contents of such components as SiO2, Al2O3 , MgO, K2O, Fe2O3 , Rb, Zn and Zr, highly influenced by the content of clay matter and detrital material, are significantly higher in the structureless and layered zuber types, compared with the textural equivalents of clayey and rock salts. The contents of Sr and CaO, connected with carbonate and sulphate admixture, are commonly higher in the layered rock salts with frequent clay-anhydrite laminae.

The Oldest Halite (Na1) (Zechstein, Upper Permian) played a significant role in the development of geological structure of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline (SW Poland) because of its different rheological properties in comparison to the adjacent rocks. Intercalations of anhydrite and anhydrite-halite occurring within the Na1 show a lot of features of tectonically disturbed rocks. Macroscopic petrological observations revealed that anhydrite rocks represent four rock types with different structural and textural properties. On the microscopic scale, five types of crystals have been distinguished in all macroscopic types. They vary in size, shape and distribution of primary fluid inclusion assemblages. The anhydrite-halite rocks show two groups with slightly different petrological features that are apparently related to their tectonic deformation and recrystallisation processes. The main recorded directions of tectonic movements seem to be horizontal or sub-horizontal.

The Zechstein salt samples were collected from three fragments of cores, drilled from the Góra and Wapno salt domes. After the residual material had been separated, formations displaying high magnetism were found. Two types of such formations were subjected to analysis: round, metallic spherules and irregular particles. In total, 13 items were examined. The sizes of both types of the material ranged from 70 to 400 μm. Iron oxide was found to be the main chemical component of both spherules and irregular particles. Its proportion ranged from 70 to 100% in the samples. The origin of those magnetic materials has not been clearly determined. It can be either extraterrestrial or anthropogenic.

Opis:
The sedimentary and stratigraphic patterns established for Zechstein of the western part of the Peribaltic Syneclise (and in particular the eastern Łeba Elevation) were applied to other parts of the East European Craton (EEC) in Poland: the eastern Baltic Syneclise and the Podlasie region. A very large number of mostly fully-cored borehole sections in the Puck Bay region certainly predestines the eastern Łeba Elevation area to use it as a model. The most part of the EEC, except of its part adjacent to the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone, during the Zechstein deposition represents the marginal parts of the basin. The fauna occurring in the Zechstein carbonate deposits of the EEC makes it possible to distinguish between the Zechstein Limestone and the younger carbonate strata, but certainly not between the Main Dolomite and the Platy Dolomite and hence the facies models for the Zechstein that have been previously developed in the western part of the Peribaltic Syneclise augmented by sequence stratigraphic approach seem to be the best tool to apply in other peripheral areas in the EEC area. The Zechstein sequence in the western part of the Peribaltic Syneclise consists, in general terms, of three parts: (1) carbonate platform of the Zechstein Limestone (occurring only in the north-westernmost corner of the study area and passing into basin facies dominant in the most part of the area); (2) the PZ1 evaporite platform system composed of sulphate platforms and adjacent basin system and constituting the major part of the Zechstein sequence; and (3) the Upper Anhydrite-PZ3 cover. There is a consensus, as far as the western part of the Peribaltic Syneclise is concerned, that the Platy Dolomite platform is wider than the Main Dolomite platform. In the easternmost part of the Peribaltic Syneclise, the stratigraphical interpretations are diverse. We have included the anhydrite overlying the Zechstein Limestone into the Upper Anhydrite, and concluded that the overlying interbedded mudstone and anhydrite also belong to the Upper Anhydrite. When above the Upper Anhydrite one carbonate unit occurs, it is assigned either to the Main Dolomite and Platy Dolomite, or to the Platy Dolomite. The same conclusion is proposed for the marginal parts of the Podlasie Bay. The deposition of Zechstein Limestone resulted in the origin of carbonate platforms along the basin margins which changed an inherited topographic setting. The Lower Anhydrite deposits are lowstand systems tracts (LST) deposits, lacking in more marginal parts of the western and eastern Peribaltic Syneclise and in the major part of the Podlasie Bay. The accommodation space existed and/or created during the Lower Anhydrite and the Oldest Halite deposition in the Baltic and Podlasie bays was filled and at the onset of the Upper Anhydrite deposition, a roughly planar surface existed except in the area adjacent to the main Polish basin. The Upper Anhydrite deposits are transgressive systems tracts deposits and then highstand systems tracts deposits and they encroached the Zechstein Limestone platforms. The Upper Anhydrite deposition was terminated by sea level fall, and the Upper Anhydrite deposits in the marginal areas became subject to karstification. The Main Dolomite transgression took place in several phases but its maximum limit did not reach the Upper Anhydrite limit. The deposition of the PZ2 chlorides (LST deposits) resulted in the filling of the accommodation space that was inherited after the deposition of the Main Dolomite and the Basal Anhydrite. Subsequently, the area became exposed, and marine deposits (Grey Pelite and Platy Dolomite) related to the last major transgression during the life of the Zechstein basin that resulted in a flooding of the exposed surface of older Zechstein deposits, including the area that was emergent during deposition of the PZ2 cycle. Microbial carbonates, being stromatolites and thrombolites, are a common feature of all Zechstein carbonate units but in particular this is the case of the Platy Dolomite. There are no direct premises allowing for convincing settlement doubts regarding the stratigraphical position of the upper carbonate unit in many cases, but several lines of evidence suggest that, as in the entire Zechstein basin, the Main Dolomite considerably shifted basinward, and the Platy Dolomite – landward, although it is difficult to ascertain whether the original Platy Dolomite extent was similar to or greater than the limit of the Zechstein Limestone as elsewhere in the Zechstein Basin.

The Zechstein Limestone of the Bonikowo 2 borehole is composed of limestone with varied dolomite content and is slightly thicker (3.4 m) than other supposed condensed sections in SW Poland. The microfacies (mostly bioclastic wackestones-packstones) are characteristic of open marine limestone deposited in deep shelf environments. The common occurrence of echinoids in all parts of the section, except close to its top, indicates no essential change in sea water salinity. However, the palaeotemperature interpretation of the highest δ18O value of calcite recorded in the Bonikowo 2 borehole (+0.32‰) indicates a temperature of 22.9°C when a δ18O of water = 2‰ is assumed. The δ13C and δ18O curves for calcite and dolomite are similar in shape, and their mean values are similar: +1.8 ±1.5‰ for calcite, respectively, and +1.9 ±2.3‰ and –4.3 ±2.4‰, –3.8 ±4.3‰ for dolomite. There is a recrystallized interval in the lower part of the section with both δ13C and δ18O values reduced. This may be regarded as an aerobic equivalent of the Kupferschiefer. The diversity and abundance of foraminifers is significant throughout the section studied; lagenids prevail, and this is considered to be due to the dysaerobic conditions throughout the duration of deposition of the Zechstein Limestone.

Opis:
The development of basal Zechstein (Wuchiapingian) strata inSW Polandindicates the existence of a diversified relief inherited after the flooding of the pre-existing depression by the transgressing Zechstein sea. The deeper parts of the basin were the place of development of thin basinal Zechstein Limestone showing sedimentary condensation manifested by bored and encrusted grains and thick evaporites (mostly halite), and in shallow parts Zechstein Limestone reefs followed by thinner evaporite sequences (dominated by anhydrite) occur. The analysis of 3D seismic sections showed that instead of three conventionally recognized evaporite units of stratigraphic potential in the PZ1 cycle, five units occur (from the base to the top: Lower Anhydrite, Lower Oldest Halite, Middle Anhydrite, Upper Oldest Halite, Upper Anhydrite). In a particular place their number may vary from two (Lower Anhydrite at the base of the PZ1 cycle and Upper Anhydrite at the top of the PZ1 cycle) to five. There are two complexes of Lower Anhydrite occurring throughout the platform and basinal zones showing deepening-upward (transgressive) trend. The halite sedimentation in the deepest parts of salt basins began shortly after the deposition of the upper Lower Anhydrite complex while in the sulphate platform areas the sulphate deposition lasted still for a long time. The Lower Oldest Halite deposits occur in the depressions. Between the halite basins, anhydrite platforms occur, and the thickness of anhydrite platform deposits is smaller than it is observed in salt basins. The Upper Oldest Halite in turn is recorded above the anhydrite platform. The two halite units represent different phases of development of halite basins. The Lower Oldest Halite basins are related to the pre-Zechstein depressions, although in some cases their syndepositional subsidence was controlled by reactivation, during the deposition of basal Zechstein strata, of former faults. In turn, the Upper Oldest Halite basins used the accommodation space created due to anhydritization of the Lower Anhydrite deposits composed originally of selenitic gypsum. The 3D seismics evidences that the PZ1 evaporites inSW Polandhave been deposited in far more complex and dynamic system than it was assumed before.

Opis:
The diapiric structures of the Polish Lowlands are tectonically deeply seated down to the autochthonous Zechstein strata at a depth of ca. 6 km. In the process of deep burial and halokinetic diapirism, the salt rocks were subjected to diagenetic and metamorphic transformations, with the temperature being an essential factor. Considering the thermal gradient, a temperature of up to ca. 200°C can be achieved in the salt dome within a depth range from several hundred metres to 6 km, which may lead to transformations of the majority of salt minerals. Phase transitions of two borate minerals – boracite and congolite from the Kłodawa salt dome – provide evidence for higher temperatures in the salt dome rocks. The authigenic euhedral crystals of those borate minerals display their external habitus in ambient temperature in the form of regular symmetry (F43c – pseudo-regular polyhedrons), whereas their internal structure is lower: orthorhombic (Pca21) for boracite and rhombohedral (R3C) for congolite. The heating and cooling of boracite and congolite crystals show reversible phase transition. At a temperature of ca. 270°C, boracite crystals change their symmetry: orthorhombic ↔ cubic. In the case of congolite three reversible phase transitions within a temperature range of 50–339°C can be observed: rhombohedral ↔ monoclinic ↔ orthorhombic ↔ cubic symmetry. Those phase transitions, confirmed experimentally in our study, clearly document at least local occurrences of temperatures exceeding 339°C in the Kłodawa salt dome.

Opis:
Bromine content was determined in 50 samples taken from the Zechstein (Upper Permian) mixed clay-salt rocks both in a sample bulk and in pure halite crystals, manualy separated. This study attempted to define bromine contents directly related to pure halite and connected with clay minerals in analysed samples. The examined samples were collected in galleries of theKłodawa salt mine from the Brownish Zuber Unit (Na3t), representing PZ3 cycle and from the Red Zuber Unit (Na4t) of PZ4 cycle. Mineral composition of clay fraction in the Zechstein mixed clay-salt rocks, represented both by zubers sensu stricto (clay content 15–85%) and clayey halite (clay <15%), is monotonous and rather constant. Bromine concentration depends on salinity of mother solutions as well as on content of minerals incorporating bromine (halite, clay minerals). In samples of the Red Zuber Unit the bromine contents attributed to clay minerals were so low that they do not influence the bromine concentrations determined in total samples and they could be neglected in genetic considerations. Deposits of the Brownish Zuber Unit were precipitated from brines much more concentrated than the mother solutions of the Red Zuber rocks. Increasing content of water-insoluble residue (mainly clay minerals) in samples of the Brownish Zuber unit is accompanied with higher bromine concentrations. Difference between bromine content in total samples and in pure halite crystals also increases. So the reliable interpretation of genesis and depositional environment of halites, being a constituent of the Brownish Zuber rocks, requires detecting bromine in separated pure halite crystals.

Opis:
W utworach ewaporatowych występuje wiele minerałów akcesorycznych, nierozpuszczalnych w wodzie, które można łatwo wydzielić poprzez rozpuszczenia tych osadów. Z próbek pobranych z soli kamiennych, potasowo-magnezowych i zubrów wysadu solnego Kłodawa wydzielono w efekcie hydroseparacji nierozpuszczalne w wodzie residuum, w którym stwierdzono obecność idiomorficznych monokryształów: anhydrytu, hydrotalkitu siarczanowego, magnezytu, dolomitu, kalcytu, boracytu, kongolitu, kwarcu, hematytu, pirytu, siarki, oraz mikrokrystaliczne skupienia szajbelyitu, talku, mik i chlorytów. Należą do nich: kwarc i kalcyt z wrostkami bituminów, boracyt, szajbelyit, talk, hydrotalkit siarczanowy i kongolit.
Evaporate formations include a number of accessory minerals that are insoluble in water. They can be easily separated by dissolving sediments. The samples collected from rock, potassium-magnesium and zuber salts of the Kłodawa salt diapir were subjected to hydro-separation to obtain insoluble residuum in which the presence of idiomorphic monocrystals was found: anhydrite, sulphate hydrotalkite, magnesite, dolomite, calcite, boracite, kongolite, quartzite, hematite, pirite and sulphur, as well as microcrystalline concentrations of szaibelyite, talc, mica and chlorites. The majority of those minerals occur in various section layers at the same time. Few of them display a very narrow scope of concentration relating to exclusively specific layer or part of the stratum, creating specific mineral layers. They include: quartz and calcite with the ingrowths of bitumen, boracite, szaibelyite, talc, sulphate hydrotalkite and kongolite. Based on the occurrence of those minerals, five mineral levels were identified in the Kłodawa salt diapir. They can present a new tool for lithostratigraphic identification and correlation of strata and layers in Zechstein salt deposits.

Opis:
Otwór badawczo-eksploatacyjny M-35 jest zlokalizowany w południowo-wschodniej części wysadu solnego Mogilno (Ryc. 2). Został odwiercony do głębokości 1755 metrów. Otwór nawierca ewaporaty późnego permu (cechsztynu). W analizowanym rdzeniu wydzielono 13 ogniw cechsztyńskiej serii solnej cyklotemów PZ2, PZ3 i PZ4. Złoże solne w rejonie otworu M-35 jest uformowane tektonicznie. W wyniku procesów halokinetycznych i halotektonicznych warstwy solne zostały silnie sfałdowane i zalegają bardzo stromo. Upad warstw waha się od 35 do 90°. Najczęściej jednak wynosi 70-80°. W wyniku częstych zmian kąta upadu i przefałdowań otwór przewierca kilkakrotnie te same ogniwa.
The M-35 exploratory borehole and operating well is located in the south-eastern part of the Mogilno Salt Dome (Fig. 2). It was drilled down to the depth of 1,755 m penetrating the Upper Permian (Zechstein) evaporates. Its core section enabled to distinguish 13 lithostratigraphic members of the Zechstein salt series, represented cyclothems PZ2, PZ3, and PZ4. The observed salt units had been tectonically extremely folded and steeply arranged. The layers dip varies from 35° to 90°, mostly 70-80° and the same salt units repetated several times in the section. Also many of them were reduced in thickness or completely wedged out. The uppermost units of PZ4 cycle or evaporates older than the Older Halite (Na2) unit, were not found in the studied profile.

Opis:
The sedimentary and stratigraphic patterns established for Zechstein of the western part of the Peribaltic Syneclise (and in particular the eastern Łeba Elevation) were applied to other parts of the East European Craton (EEC) in Poland: the eastern Peribaltic Syneclise and the Podlasie region. The accommodation space existed and/or created during the Lower Anhydrite and the Oldest Halite deposition in the Baltic and Podlasie bays was filled and at the onset of the Upper Anhydrite deposition, a roughly planar surface existed except in the area ad jacent to the main Polish basin. There are no direct premises allowing for convincing settlement doubts regarding the stratigraphical position of the upper carbonate unit in many cases, but several lines of evidence suggest that, as in the entire Zechstein basin, the Main Dolomite considerably shifted basinward, and the Platy Dolomite - landward, although it is difficult to ascertain whether the original Platy Dolomite extent was similar to or greater than the limit of the Zechstein Limestone as elsewhere in the Zechstein Basin.

The trepostome bryozoan Dyscritella microstoma Ernst, 2001 is reported for the first time from the Zechstein Main Dolomite (Ca2) of Poland and Germany. This species has been previously recognized in the older fossiliferous Zechstein Lime stone (Ca1) of the North Sudetic Basin (Poland) and in the northern part of Germany. The Polish specimens derive from a few boreholes located in the Pomerania region and in the Wolsztyn High, both in the western part of Poland. The German material comes from a borehole on Rügen Island in North eastern Germany. The present paper deals with the taxonomic description of D. microstoma and its distribution in the Main Dolomite deposits.

Opis:
The basal Zechstein succession in SW Poland is dominated by breccias and/or conglomerates or extraclast-bearing bioclastic limestones, which were deposited during rapid flooding of the pre-existing intracontinental basin in the early Lopingian (Late Permian). Of these, the boulder-cobble breccias and conglomerates are interpreted as deposited in a rocky shore-zone where density flows and upwelling prevailed. The breccias gradually pass up into bryozoan (or other bioclastics) grainstones. The matrix-supported breccias were deposited as large extraclasts and blocks of Carboniferous rock were rolled down or detached from a cliff and were then either embedded into a carbonate sand or formed a framework supplying voids that could be colonized by tubular encrusting foraminifers. These foraminifers abound in all basal Zechstein facies (except in the debris-flow deposits) and are attributed to Palaeonubecularia. The associated faunas include other foraminifers (uniserial and hemigordiopsids), bryozoans, brachiopods, bivalves, gastropods, and microbial deposits. The prolific growth of tubular encrusting foraminifers has resulted from nutrient supply from the basin by upwelling. Botryoidal aragonite cements (also interpreted as due to upwelling) also characterize the basal Zechstein strata, although they were previously reported only from the upper Zechstein Limestone. The ẟI3C values of the basal Zechstein deposits show small variation and oscillated around 4.0%o, suggesting that these deposits are younger than the Kupferschiefer.

Większość danych dotyczy 4 wysadów solnych z centralnej Polski (ryc. 1): Damasławek (14 próbek), Góra (5 próbek), Kłodawa (266 próbek) i Mogilno (13 próbek). Najwięcej danych uzyskano dla utworów potasonośnych cyklotemu PZ3 (207 próbek), dwukrotnie mniej (91 próbek) dla serii potasonośnej cyklotemu PZ2. Skąpe dane (9 próbek) dotyczą siarczanowych soli K-Mg (polihality) cyklotemu PZ1 w północnej Polsce (tab. 2). 3-5). Opisane serie potasonośne nie stanowią zatem ekonomicznie opłacalnego źródła pozyskiwania pożądanych rzadkich pierwiastków śladowych takich jak np. lit, bor, stron czy cez.
Content analysis was conducted on selected trace elements (Ag, As, Ba, Be, Br, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Ga, J, La, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Se, Sn, Sr, Ti, Tl, U, V, and Zn) of the Upper Permian (Zechstein) potash-bearing deposits of cyclothems PZ1 to PZ3 in Poland, based on both archival and published geochemical data concerning 307 rock samples (Table 1). Most of the samples (296) were collected from four salt domes, located in central Poland (Fig. 1): Damasławek (14 samples), Góra (5 samples), Kłodawa (266 samples), and Mogilno (13 samples). Dominant data (207 samples) represented the potash-bearing series of cyclothem PZ3 (Transitional Beds, Na2+K2, and Older Potash units; Table 2), fewer data (91 samples) characterised the potash-bearing deposits of cyclothem PZ2 (Transitional Beds, Na3+K3, and Younger Potash unit; Table 2). Only a few samples (9) were taken from sulphate potassium-magnesium salts (polyhalites) of PZ1 cyclothem from northern Poland (Fig. 1). An average content of most often detected trace elements was low in the studied deposits, usually not higher than 1–4 mg/kg (Tables 3–5); therefore, those Zechstein potash-bearing rocks are not economic sources of many marketable trace elements, e.g. lithium, boron, strontium or caesium

Opis:
Ponieważ zasięg spękań eksploatacyjnych wynosi kilka wysokości wyrobisk, obejmują one skały węglanowe Ca1 i spągową część anhydrytów dolnych A1d, uwalniając siarkowodór. "tunele wentylacyjne", do odprowadzania gazów bezpośrednio do szybu wydechowego.
The presence of hydrogen sulfide was discovered during drilling into roof rocks in the Sieroszowice mining area. This is a new problem which is significant both for working conditions in the mine and for the environment. This gas occurs in the first Zechstein cyclothem (Werra) in lower anhydrites (Aid) and appears especially in the working zones being excluded from the operation. The routes of hydrogen sulfide migration are sometimes through natural fractures in the rock mass as well as roof boreholes, and especially discontinuities caused by the development of roof fractures induced by mining operation. Since the range of mining fractures is several times higher than the height of mining excavation, they reach the bottom part of lower anhydrites Aid, releasing the hydrogen sulfide. The gas outflows are periodic and declining. Due to their low concentrations, they are not always recorded by mine gauges. The gas emanations have not been noticed in mine workings until now. The presence of hydrogen sulfide, as well as the inability to forecast its occurrence, is a serious challenge for the mine's administration and responsible staff. Since the first signs of H2S, efforts have been undertaken to identify and eliminate this hazard and to ensure the safety of the miners. Improved ventilation along with the insulation of mining voids is currently being employed. Separate, insulated headings (so called "ventilation tunnels") were arranged in order to carry the gases directly to the exhaust shaft. Additionally, the bolting system and cracks in rock masses are sealed up by special foames.

Opis:
The Gorzów Block (West Poland) occurs in the transition zone between the PZ1 sulphate platform and the Na2 basin. In contrast to the western part of the Southern Permian Basin where the Z1 halite (Oldest Halite Na1) is normally restricted to the peripheral subbasins located south of the main basin, in Poland it occurs both in the basin centre and in the former basins of the Lower Anhydrite within the marginal sulphate platform complex, where halite sequences are thick and may have originated in a deep-water setting. The Na1 deposits have been considered so far to be LST deposits both in the marginal sulphate platform facies as well as in the basin centre. Brine salinities (and the minerals they precipitate) are controlled by brine residence times in the basin, and these are determined primarily by the absolute and the relative rates of water flow into, and brine flux out of the basin (Kendall, 2010). Thus sea-level rise in the Boreal Sea could have resulted in the increase of the brine residence times in the Zechstein basin and the deposition of more saline evaporites. Consequently, the Oldest Halite in the basin centre in Poland is regarded as the TST deposit.

W obrębie utworów piaszczystych nadkładu znajdującego się nad wysadem i czapą gipsową Wapna (woj. wielkopolskie) występują automorficzne kryształy kwarcu (AKK). Dokładnej analizie poddano AKK wyseparowane z piasków kwarcowych średnioziarnistych (reprezentujących utwory miocenu i najprawdopodobniej oligocenu). Jedynie w niektórych AKK zaobserwowano inkluzje fluidalne (ciekło-gazowe).
Within sandy sediments overlaying the Wapno Salt Dome and its cap-rock (Middle Poland) occur euhedral quartz crystals (signed AKK). Those AKK subjected to a thorough analysis were separated from middle-grained quartz sands (of Miocene and probable Oligocene age). This material was obtained from C1 bore-hole which is located at NW part of cap-rock. In this place the cap-rock is cut by deep (about 120 m) trough filled with Cenozoic sediments. The AKK differ from grains of sand by euhedral shape (they display normal shape corresponding to the low-temperature variety) and very intensive diamond shine. Their length vary from 0.1 to 2 mm with average about 0.5 mm. Fluid (liquid-gas) inclusions occur only in some AKK. They are in form: 1/ randomly distributed single fluid inclusions, 2/ belts or irregular areas of densely packed inclusions. The size of inclusions vary from a few to about 30 μm. The microthermometric measurements show homogenization temperatures in the range of 86.4 – 126.5°C and in one case 158.8°C. In addition to the fluid inclusions in a smaller amount in the AKK were found inclusions filled by organic matter.

Opis:
Hydrocarbon exploration in The Netherlands has a chequered history from serendipitous oil shows via chance oil/gas discoveries to finding the largest continental European oil field in 1943, followed by finding the largest gas field in the world in 1959. The present contribution traces the development of moderate to good porosity/permeability trends in depositional facies of Zechstein Stassfurt carbonates in a ‘gas play’ intermediate in significance between the above two plays but all in the northern part of The Netherlands. Various depositional facies in the Stassfurt carbonates were turned into ‘carbonate fabric units’ by diagenetic processes creating or occluding the porosity/permeability. This formed moderate to good gas reservoirs in barrier-shoal, open-marine shelf and proximal-slope carbonates in the subsurface of the province of Drenthe in the NE Netherlands. The diagenetic models forming these carbonate fabric units are linked to the variety of facies in a depositional model which shows explain and predicts the reservoir trends. Such depositional/diagenetic facies are ‘translated’ into characteristic petrophysical values recognisable on wire line logs in uncored wells, and in characteristic seismic expressions that show these trends in undrilled areas. This approach has been proven to be effective in delineating porosity trends, visualised by 3-D seismic in the Collendoornerveen field, and thus provides a new exploration ‘tool’ in hydrocarbon exploration.

Opis:
The Late Permian and Mesozoic evolution of the Mid-Polish Trough is analysed using a set of palaeotectonic cross-sections which are constrained by regional integrated depth-converted reflection seismic profiles. Results support the concept that the central and NW part of the Mid-Polish Trough can be subdivided into a Pomeranian and a Kuiavian segment. The Pomeranian segment is characterised by lower subsidence and a shallower depth to the base of the Zechstein (3500-4000 m) as compared with the Kuiavian segment. The Pomeranian basin was characterised by a nearly symmetrical structure and a single depocentre. In Kujawy, the basin displays a more complex structure with several local depocentres. In the Pomeranian segment, salt structures are poorly developed (salt pillows). These formed relatively late: during the latest Cretaceous and Early Paleocene. In the Kuiavian segment, salt structures include also salt diapirs which began to form at the end of the Muschelkalk, and were active later throughout Mesozoic times, as evidenced by lateral facies and thickness changes. During end Cretaceous and Paleocene basin inversion, the base of the Zechstein was uplifted by 3000-4000 m in the Kuiavian segment and by 2000-3000 m in the Pomeranian segment. The transition zone between the Pomeranian and Kuiavian segments, located in the area between Piła and Toruń, displays mixed features in its structure and geological evolution. Subsidence of the Mid-Polish Trough was controlled by multiple extensional pulses during which pre-existing crustal-scale faults were reactivated. Similarly, inversion of the Mid-Polish Trough involved reactivation of crustal faults. Segmentation of the Mid-Polish Trough can be related to factors including differences in its basement composition.

Opis:
The Jabłonna Reef, one of the reefs formed in Wuchiapingian time in the western part of the Wolsztyn palaeo-High (SW Poland), is characterized by quite irregular outlines and consists of three separate reef bodies (ca. 0.5–1.5 km2 each; the thickness of the reef complex is usually >60 m). It is penetrated by four boreholes, which show two distinct phases of bryozoan reef development during deposition of the the Zechstein Limestone. The first one occurred early in the depositional history and botryoidal aragonitic cementation played a very important role in reef formation. This phase of bryozoan reef development terminated suddenly; one possible reason was that a relative change of sea level – first a fall and then a rise – disturbed the upwelling circulation. Consequently, bioclastic deposition predominated for a relatively long time until the second phase of bryozoan reef development occurred, but the latter was not accompanied by dubious early cementation. During this second phase, reticular fenestellid bryozoans were predominant. Subsequently, microbial reefs developed and abound in the upper part of the Zechstein Limestone sections. The general shallowing-upward nature of deposition in the Jab³onna Reef area resulted in reef-flat conditions with ubiquitous, microbial deposits, in the central part of the Jab³onna Reef. Then, the reef-flat started to prograde and eventually the entire Jab³onna Reef area became the site of very shallow, subaqueous deposition. Five biofacies are distinguished in the Jab³onna Reef sections: the Acanthocladia biofacies at the base, then mollusc-crinoid, brachiopod-bryozoan, Rectifenestella and at the top, stromatolite biofacies. They represent a shallowing-upward cycle, possibly with some important fluctuation recorded as the distinctive lithofacies boundary, corresponding to the Acanthocladia/mollusc-crinoid biofacies boundary. The 13C curves of the Jab³onna 2 and Jab³onna 4 boreholes permit correlation of the trends in the middle parts of both sections and confirm the strong diachroneity of the biofacies boundaries, with the exception of the roughly isochronous Acanthocladia/ mollusc-crinoid biofacies boundary. The presence of echinoderms and strophomenid brachiopods indicates that until deposition of the lower part of the Rectifenestella biofacies, conditions were clearly stenohaline. The subsequent elimination of stenohaline organisms and progressively poorer taxonomic differentiation of the faunal assemblage are characteristic for a slight, gradual rise in salinity. The taxonomic composition of organisms forming the Jab³onna Reef shows a similarity to reefs described from England and Germany, as well as the marginal carbonate platform of SW Poland. Filled fissures were recorded in the lower part of the Jabłonna Reef. The aragonite cementation recorded in some fissure fillings implies that they originated in rocks exposed on the sea floor and are neptunian dykes.

Opis:
The results of the lithofacial analysis of data from the Moracz 3D seismic survey were among the main premises leading to the positioning of the new petroleum exploration well in that area. Unfortunately, the reservoir properties of the drilled part of the Main Dolomite carbonates differed significantly from those anticipated by the analysis of the amplitudes of the seismic signal recorded. Such surprisingly negative results impelled the reinterpretation of 3D seismic data. Hence, a number of analyses of the amplitudes, the frequencies, and the variability of phase shift were carried out in order to determine the influence of these parameters on the lithofacial interpretation of seismic data. The results revealed a fundamental error of amplitude with the extraction maps. It appeared that the distribution of amplitudes is not essentially controlled by the reservoir properties of the Main Dolomite carbonates but by the fault shadow effect coming from Mesozoic graben in the overburden. In addition, a large diversity of frequency spectra was found, which, combined with the small thickness of the exploration level, could have contributed to incorrect identification of seismic reflections. There was also a change in seismic signatures from the same reflection in different parts of the survey, raising doubts about the distribution of the phase rotation. In order to recognize phase rotation diversity, a new seismic data analysis was based upon the selected Triassic sediments of high impedance. The obtained maps demonstrated significant variability within the data volume due to attenuation. The reinterpreted data from the Moracz 3D seismic survey proved the uneven and unstable distribution of amplitudes, frequencies, and phase which resulted in erroneous conclusions of petroleum exploration. After modeling with the use of different frequency ranges, an analysis of the amplitude extraction of the horizons related to the Main Dolomite was performed. Then the amplitude ratio attribute was selected which eliminated the influence of the regional amplitude and frequency distribution and showed the distribution. of dolomite properties more reliably than the amplitude extraction maps.

In the German Zechstein basin, two main clay-bearing salt strata occur, in fact Tonmittelsalz in Z3 (Leine formation) and Tonbrockensalz in Z4 (Aller Formation). These units may correlate with the Brown Zuber (Na3t) and Red Zuber (Na4t) in the Polish Zechstein basin. To mark out the characteristics of Tonmittelsalz and Tonbrockensalz, BGR started detailed mineralogical-geochemical investigations. Even though these units are characterized by a similar mineral composition of mainly halite with subordinate quantities of anhydrite and clay minerals, differences were observed. Based on microscopical observations, carbonate is only existing in Tonmittelsalz and polyhalite is more common in Tonbrockensalz. Characteristic for Tonmittelsalz seem to be clay bands with idiomorphic halite and a breccious fabric for Tonbrockensalz. Similarities to the equivalent zuber beds were observed. This ongoing project will be continued with more samples from other locations.
W niemieckiej części basenu cechsztyńskiego występują dwie główne warstwy soli ilastych: Tonmittelsalz w cyklotemie Z3 (formacja Leine) i Tonbrockensalz w cyklotemie Z4 (formacja Aller). Ponadto, w Tonmittelsalz iłowce tworzą pasma z idiomorficznymi kryształami halitu, a w Tonbrockensalz występują brekcje. Badania opisanych soli są nadal prowadzone.

Opis:
The paper presents the characteristics of relict mineralization in the lowermost Zechstein sediments based on core material from wells located in the western part of the Radwanice copper field. The occurrence and distribution of mineralization in the lowermost Zechstein sediments is closely associated with a range of different geochemical zones. Particularly important for the interpretation of mineralization processes is the presence of the transition zone occurring between reduced and oxidized rocks. The main attributes of the transition zone are the occurrence of intermediate features between the oxidized zone and the reduced facies, and the presence of relict mineralization accompanied by iron oxides and hydroxides as well as native gold. As a result of detailed petrographic observations, using reflected light microscopy scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe, the following minerals were identified: bornite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, cinnabar, covellite, digenite, electrum, geerite, goethite, hematite, idaite, pyrite, siderite, spinocopite, tetraauricuprite, tiemannite, tetrahedrite, yarrowite and native gold. Relict nature of mineralization and coexistence of metal sulphides with iron oxides and hydroxides allows the conclusion that the transition zone was originally reduced. The nature of mineralization in the transition zone indicates changes in the physical and chemical conditions during the secondary mineralization process leading to remobilization of elements/metals contained in the primary mineralization.

Opis:
Organic geochemical studies were carried out on the sulphate–shale–carbonate series, representing the upper PZ1 and lower PZ2 sections of the Zechstein cycles in the Kłodawa Salt Structure, located in the central part of the Zechstein Basin, in Poland. Hydrocarbons extracted from the Na1 and Na2 rock salts, the A1g and A2 anhydrites, the Ca2 dolomitic anhydrite and the T2 shale-carbonate rocks were analysed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Homological series of the n-alkanes and chained isoprenes indicate the algal nature of the organic matter with the characteristic chemiistry of type II kerogen deposited under anoxic conditions. The molecular composition of other biomarkers (n-alkylbenzenes, steranes) as well as phenenthrene and dibenzothiophene and their methyl derivatives revealed the highest maturity of the hydrocarbons (level of advanced stage of the oil-window zone) in the upper part of the Stinking Shale. In the adjacent beds, a gradual decrease in the maturity of the hydrocarbons was observed both upwards and downwards in the stratigraphic sequence. The main source rock of the hydrocarbons is represented by the Stinking Shale deposits. The observed trend of vertical variation in maturity through the rock profile is explained as resulting from the continuous vertical migration of hydrocarbons, expelled during maturation from the Stinking Shale rocks into the underlying and overlying strata.

Barwne sole kamienne występują w wielu złożach Europy i świata, o czym świadczy zamieszczony w artykule przegląd światowych złóż soli kamiennej. W ostatnich latach kopalnia podjęła uboczną produkcję soli różowej przeznaczonej do wytwarzania tzw. galanterii solnej. Podjęte zostały wstępne badania mające na celu udokumentowanie geologicznej pozycji w złożu "galanteryjnych" odmian soli różowej. Prezentowana praca zawiera charakterystykę właściwości i geologicznych warunków występowania oraz klasyfikację i sposoby pozyskiwania soli różowej dla celów produkcji galanteryjnej ze złoża kłodawskiego.
Colored rock salt types, especially pink, orange and red ones, become a more demand material for production of fancy salt goods such as salt lamps, chandelier, sculptures etc. Colored rock salts occur in many salt formations and deposits in Europe and in the world as it was illustrated by a short review of selected rock salt deposits. In Poland the discussed colored rock salts are exploited only in one salt deposit, located in the Kłodawa salt diaper (by the "Kłodawa" Salt Mine), mainly for alimentary and chemical industry and for road treatment. Last years the mine has excavated a small amount of pink salt for production of mentioned above salt fancy goods and the increased demand for this raw material initiated studies on characteristics and geological position of pink salt within the salt deposit, enabling future prediction and calculation of its resources. Preliminary characteristics of features and the geological situation as well as a classification and exploitation methods of pink rock salt were presented in the paper.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of sedimentological studies of Zechstein marine deposits occurring in the Wleń Graben, a tectonic unit located in the southeastern part of the North Sudetic Synclinorium (NSS; Western Sudetes, SW Poland). Owing to poor exposure, small thickness, and lack of palaeontological data, the stratigraphy and age of these rocks were determined solely on the basis of analogies with adjacent areas. New findings described here, including faunal remains (remains of bivalves, including Liebea sp.), geopetal structures, clastic fills of halite crystals, moulds and bioturbation, shed new light on the environmental interpretations of the Zechstein in this part of the NSS. It should be assumed that at least two types of deposit may be assigned to the marine Zechstein in the Wleń Graben area, namely sparitic and microsparitic dolomite (PZ3) and the overlying deposits of the heterolithic series (PZt). These deposits were formed during the late Zechstein transgression, when the study area was in the marginal southwesternmost part of a newly formed shallow-marine bay of the Polish Zechstein Basin. In the central part of the present-day Wleń Graben, a shallow-marine bay (lagoon?) was dominated by carbonate sedimentation. A north-dipping mud plain, periodically flooded by a shallow sea, occurred in the southern part of the area. The paper summarises the present state of research on Permian deposits in the Wleń Graben, the first comprehensive lithostratigraphic scheme is suggested, and a new concept of the palaeogeographic evolution of the area in the Early and Late Permian is proposed.

Opis:
The Polish Zechstein Basin was a tideless sea dominated by storms. Main Dolomite deposits of the Miedzychód region were deposited: a) on the carbonate platform (in the environments of the outer barrier, inner barrier and high- and low-energy platform flat); b) on the platform slope; c) at the toe-of-slope; d) on the basin floor. The best reservoir properties are recorded in shallow-marine deposits of the outer and inner barriers and in deep-sea sediments of the toe-of-slope (turbidites and debrites). Rich reserves of crude oil and natural gas were discovered both on the carbonate platform (the Miedzychód and Grotów deposits) and at its toe-of-slope (the Lubiatów deposit). The Main Dolomite sediments are wholly included in the second depositional sequence (PZS2 sensu Wagner & Peryt, 1997). The maximum flooding surface of the PZS2 sequence within the platform, its slope and toe-of-slope, runs along the A1g/Ca2 boundary. In the basinal zone, its correlative equivalent is a hard ground observed within the Main Dolomite carbonate rhythmites. The boundary between the second and third (PZS2/PZS3) depositional sequences (corresponding to the ZS3/ZS4 sequence boundary in the German Basin) runs on top of the Main Dolomite carbonates (on the platform slope, at the toe-of-slope and on the basin floor) and above top of the Main Dolomite carbonates, within the lower part of the Basal Anhydrite (on the platform).

"Rudna" copper mine

Opis:
A block development operation at the "Rudna" copper mine (KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.) encountered a "compressed gas trap" that caused the ejection of fragmented rock material into a drift. Faced with a new threat of gas ejection the mine needed to find methods to identify potential gas concentration zones prior to any further exploration work. Surface seismic surveying was chosen as a widely-accepted standard method of investigating rockmass structure and tectonics and pinpointing natural gas deposits. An area of one square kilometre was selected directly above the ejection site, a 3D seismic survey, known as Duża Wólka 3D, was performed and a survey well S-421A was drilled. The objective was to investigate the overall rock structure, especially the structure of Zechstein and top Rotliegendes formations, as well as to attempt identifying anomalous zones, which could be linked with the gas saturation of Ca1 dolomites, on the 3D seismic image at the P1 level (Zechstein/ Rotliegendes boundary). An interpretation of multi-scenario seismic modelling of the recorded data helped to: – recognize the structure and tectonics of the area, including minor faults cutting through the top-level Rotliegendes formations and floor-level Zechstein formations. Such faults could constitute migration channels for Carboniferous-period gases, – locate zones with nearly zero-reflection amplitude at the surface of the top-level Rotliegendes (P1 seismic boundary), which would suggest a reduction of elastic parameters of the Ca1 dolomite. This reduction could be linked to an increased porosity and fracturing of the dolomite and its saturation with gas (a reduction of the seismic wavelet propagation velocity). Credibility of this interpretation is already partly corroborated by data from wells drilled in the Zechstein limestone by the mine. The paper presents the first in the world attempt to use the surface seismic survey for location of zones with small gas concentration in porous rocks at the Zechstein/Rotliegendes boundary. Such zones should not be identified with gas pools that occur in the Zechstein Limestone (Ca1) in the area of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline.
