In the systematized form a number of problems is discussed related to ballistic resistance of textile armor impregnated with shear thickening fluid (STF); as STF high-concentrated suspensions of sub-micron particles and nano-particles were used. Physical models of high-speed interaction of bullets and fragments with STF-impregnated textile armor are presented; where possible quantitative relationship and computational techniques for the "liquid armor" ballistic properties evaluation are described. Based on notions of different mechanisms of the impactor energy absorption by textile armor packs under high-speed and low-speed interaction the conclusion was made about the highest efficiency of STF-impregnated textile armor when used against such threats as spike and as a back layer of combined fragmentation-and bullet-resistant textile armor packages.

Opis:
The main goal of this numerical and experimental study of composite armour systems was to investigate their ballistic behaviour. Numerical simulations were employed to determine the initial dimensions of panel layers before the actual ballistic test. In order to achieve this aim, multivariate computations with different thicknesses of panel layers were conducted. Numerical calculations were performed with the finite element method in the LS-DYNA software, which is a commonly used tool for solving problems associated with shock wave propagation, blasts and impacts. An axisymmetric model was built in order to ensure sufficient discretization. Results of a simulation study allowed thicknesses of layers ensuring assumed level of protection to be determined. According to the simulation results two armour configurations with different ceramics have been fabricated. The composite armour systems consisted of the front layer made of Al2O3 or SiC ceramic and high strength steel as the backing material. The ballistic performance of the proposed protective structures were tested with the use of 7.62 mm Armour Piercing (AP) projectile. A comparison of impact resistance of two defence systems with different ceramic has been carried out. Application of silicon carbide ceramic improved ballistic performance, as evidenced by smaller deformations of the second layer. In addition, one of armour systems was complemented with an intermediate ceramic-elastomer layer. A ceramic-elastomer component was obtained using pressure infiltration of gradient porous ceramic by elastomer. Upon ballistic impact, the ceramic body dissipated kinetic energy of the projectile. The residual energy was absorbed by the intermediate composite layer. It was found, that application of composite plates as a support of a ceramic body provided a decrease of the bullet penetration depth.

Opis:
Images of emperors of Julio-Claudian dynasty and especially the most famous representation of Octavian Augustus of Prima Porta, became the prototype representation of emperors-officers for the representatives of the next dynasty wielding Roman Empire. Statue of Augustus, no doubt modeled on Doryphoros – a statue made by Polykleitos (sculptor-foundry of classical Greek era) is an example of the propaganda image of the emperor. Statua loricata – a statue of Octavian in the breastplate – presents emperor during adlocutio – speech addressed to the army. Models of classical Greek sculpture exhibit at the statue of the emperor by using position called contrapposto and deification of the emperor by showing him barefoot. Among other things, lack of shoes indicates that the statue of Octavian was made after the death of the ruler. The divine pedigree of the emperor was also marked by the attributes that are on his right leg – Cupid and dolphin. Head of Augustus was also performed on the model Doryphoros, and its distinctive hairstyle is defined as a „Primaporta” type. The most important element of the Prima Porta statue of the emperor is his breastplate. Armor classified as a torso cuirass is here as long type – with the downward extension, meant to protect the lower abdominal part. Armor probably originally made of leather, on the statue of Octavian is very richly decorated with historical and mythological reliefs. In the central part of the armor was shown a scene that shows the Parthians transferring military signs (signum militare) that have been lost by Marcus Crassus in 53 BC. On both sides of middle scene, were placed two women – personifications of lands conquered by Rome. The whole presentation is observed by the images of deities: Tellus Mater – Mother of Earth, Apollo, Diana, the god of the Sun – Sol, goddess of the moon – Luna and the God of heaven – Caelus. Statue of Augustus from Prima Porta combines classical designs of sculptures of Polykleitos period and contemporary elements of the propaganda of the imperial policy of the Augustus principate. Sculpture showing the first emperor of the Roman Empire, dressed in breastplate has become an example image of the rulers shown as the leaders of the army but also showing the immense power of propaganda policy.

Opis:
The author gives a short story of the Japanese lacquer, describes the method of its obtaining by incising of tree trunks and that of its cleaning. Within the further parts of his report he deals with application of lacquer as the decorative coating on objects made of potter’s material, wood, textixles or metal. In 1972 the National Museum, Cracow, has applied to the author for supplying them with a method of restoration of a part of the Japanese armour coated writh black lacquer. In the course of examinations it has proved namely that the lacquer exhibits losses in some places and beneath its layer is to be found a brown-coloured deposit of iron oxides. It became evident that the iron parts have been attacked by corrosion and, as a result, their restoration was required. A decision was made to apply a newly developed product known as TRUSTAN which is being used for preventing the corrosion of iron. This composition contains a derivative of tannic acid accompanied by a considerable number of hydroxyl groups. The reconstruction of the decayed lacquer was carried out with the use of synthetic dyed with black pigments. After a series of tests applying various components a mixture of resin and wax has been selected which was obtained from the melted estrificated rubber and the raw wax. This mixture was coloured by the use of the ground carbon, soot and graphite. The dry mass was polished and the final finish was applied by means of wax.
