    We report the results of 3 surveys of visual display terminal (VDT) users who took a minibreak during which they viewed a stereoscopic image of a repeating parallel pattern showing planets. The single image stereogram method employed is called Stretch Eye™, and we evaluated the effects of Stretch Eye™ on asthenopia. An accommodative relaxation of about 1 D was observed in participants while they were gazing at the image. The employees of 2 information technology companies were evaluated according to a visual analogue scale (VAS) for subjective symptoms of asthenopia and eyesight. The results showed that Stretch Eye™ was effective in easing visual fatigue due to VDT work and it improved eyesight under working conditions.

    INTRODUCTION Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a cause of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in children. Symptomatic CVM is present in 5–10% of children with this disease and typical clinical signs of congenital cytomegalovirus infection are: microcephalia, mental retardation, progressive major amblyacousia, neuromuscular infection and ocular complications. One percent of live births has cytomegalovirus infection, 90% neonates with perinatal infection do not show symptoms of the disease. It is believed that symptomatic CMV is associated with a 90 % risk of neurological sequelae including hearing loss, or a risk of ophthalmic disorders. Ophthalmological symptoms of congenital CMV infection may affect between 5% and 30% of children. Most are disorders of the posterior segment of the eye such as retinochorioiditis, macular scars and peripheral retina, optic nerve atrophy and uveitis. Pathology of the anterior segment of the eye exists in the form of congenital cataract and corneal scarring. It is believed that with congenital CMV infection, strabismus, microphthalmia or lack of eyeball may coexist. Hypoacusis occurs in 30–60% of children with congenital symptomatic CVM. . The aim of the paper is to present the audiological examination schema in our Clinic for patients with CMV infection, involving the tonal audiometry threshold and objective hearing organ testing, as well as the ophthalmological view on these infections. MATERIAL AND METHOD The study group consisted of 30 children with cytomegalovirus infection at the age of 2–12 years, hospitalized at the Instytucie Centrum Zdrowia Matki Polki (Institute of Polish Mother's Health Center) in Lodz. 22 of them (73%) had congenital cytomegalovirus, 8 (27%) acquired cytomegalovirus. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION In the cases of congenital CMV infection, half of the patients in our study had bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss (in pure tone audiometry threshold curves of air and bone conduction at low and medium frequencies of 70 dB, while for frequencies above 2000 Hz at 90 dB). The presence of wave V in the ABR examination was recorded on both sides at the level of 90 dB. Bilateral sensorineural hearing losses were associated with mental and physically retardation, brain malformation and microcephalia. In the group of children with acquired CMV, we did not observe hearing loss. CONCLUSIONS This research proved that only congenital cytomegalovirus infection caused hearing loss. In spite of this, all children with congenital and acquired CMV should be consistently controlled by an audiologist and ophthalmologist.
    W S T Ę P Wrodzone zakażenie wirusem cytomegalii (Cytomegalovirus – CMV) jest jedną z najczęstszych infekcji wewnątrzmacicznych. Postać objawowa zakażenia występuje u 5–10% dzieci z tą chorobą i najczęściej charakteryzuje się objawami klinicznymi pod postacią: małogłowia, niedorozwoju umysłowego, ciężkiego uszkodzenia słuchu o charakterze postępującym, zakażeń nerwowo-mięśniowych i powikłań ocznych. Uważa się, że objawowa cytomegalia jest związana z 90-procentowym ryzykiem wystąpienia następstw neurologicznych, w tym uszkodzenia słuchu czy zaburzeń okulistycznych. Objawy okulistyczne wrodzonego zakażenia CMV mogą dotyczyć od 5 do 30% dzieci. Najczęściej stwierdza się zaburzenia tylnego odcinka gałki ocznej, takie jak retinochorioiditis, blizny w plamce oraz siatkówki obwodowej, zanik nerwu wzrokowego oraz zapalenie błony naczyniowej. Patologia odcinka przedniego oka przyjmuje postać zaćmy wrodzonej oraz blizn rogówki. Uważa się, że z wrodzonym zakażeniem CMV mogą współwystępować zez, małoocze czy brak gałki ocznej. Niedosłuch pojawia się u około 30–60% dzieci z objawową cytomegalią wrodzoną. Celem pracy było przedstawienie audiologicznej ścieżki diagnostycznej oraz obrazu okulistycznego u dzieci w przebiegu zakażenia CMV. M A T E R I A Ł I M E T O D A Badaniem objęto 30 dzieci zakażonych CMV w wieku od 2 do 12 lat, hospitalizowanych w Instytucie Centrum Zdrowia Matki Polki w Łodzi. U 22 dzieci (73%) stwierdzono cytomegalię wrodzoną, natomiast u 8 (27%) cytomegalię nabytą. WYNIKI I O M Ó W I E N I E W przypadkach wrodzonej postaci zakażenia ponad połowa badanych w naszym materiale miała obustronny głęboki niedosłuch odbiorczy (w audiometrii tonalnej progowej krzywe przewodnictwa powietrznego i kostnego w zakresie niskich i średnich częstotliwości na poziomie 70 dB, natomiast dla częstotliwości powyżej 2000 Hz na poziomie 90 dB). Obecność fali V w badaniu ABR zarejestrowano obustronnie na poziomie 90 dB. W pracy przedstawiono schemat prowadzonych badań audiologicznych u dzieci z CMV, obejmujących audiometrię tonalną progową i obiektywne badania narządu słuchu.

    Opis:
    An ergophthalmological tool has been developed to investigate effects of subjective and objective workload on work-related visual complaints (asthenopia). In field studies on different visual display unit (VDU) workplaces effects of objective and subjective workload, work intensity, and work breaks (5–9 min/hour) could be found. It could be shown that during the first hours of VDU work, asthenopic complaints have the tendency to follow effective workload. With increasing working time the effect of a general and visual fatigue overlaps other reported visual complaints in the majority of cases.

    Każdy człowiek zasługuje na dobre widzenie, niezależnie od czynników warunkujących jego życie. Jedną z grup społecznych, które mają utrudniony dostęp do specjalistów ochrony wzroku, są osoby z niepełnosprawnością. Jest to związane z barierami istniejącymi zarówno po stronie pacjenta, jak i specjalisty. Osoby z niepełnosprawnością często nie rozumieją przekazu drugiego człowieka i nie odbierają prawidłowo bodźców ze świata, co oznacza, że wymagają odpowiedniej ilości czasu i cierpliwości podczas badania. Celem mojej pracy magisterskiej była ocena jakości widzenia u osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną oraz porównanie jej z subiektywną oceną widzenia tych osób. Dodatkowym zadaniem było sprawdzenie dostępności do odpowiedniej opieki w zakresie ochrony wzroku dla osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. Badania przeprowadzono na 42 osobach ze znacznym lub umiarkowanym stopniem niepełnosprawności w placówce Warsztatów Terapii Zajęciowej (WTZ) w Słupi pod Kępnem. Zauważono, że zaburzenia widzenia są zależne od stopnia niepełnosprawności, a przeprowadzone badania jakości widzenia pokazały silną zależność wyniku badania od nastawienia badanego oraz umiejętności badającego. Często te osoby, pomimo niepełnosprawności, potrafią zauważyć problemy wynikające z tych zaburzeń.
    Everyone deserves to see in the best way, regardless of life circumstances. One of the groups that have hindered access to the vision protection specialists are persons with disabilities. This is due to the restrictions both on the side of the patient and professional. Persons with disabilities often do not understand correctly what another human being is meant to convey and they do not receive proper stimuli from the world, which means that they require a customized amount of time and extra patience during the test. The aim of the research was to examine the quality of vision of mentally disabled patients, and compare obtained results with feedback from the patients themselves. An additional goal was to examine available access for persons with intellectual disabilities to adequate eye care professionals. The research was conducted on 42 people with severe or moderate mental disability during the Occupational Therapy Workshops in Słupia nearby Kępno. It was found that the vision dysfunction is correlated with the degree of disability, and conducted studies have shown a strong relationship between test results and patient‘s attitude toward exam, as well as examiner’s skills. Persons with disabilities are often aware of these discrepancies.

    W pracy przedstawiono koncepcję wykorzystania XML do zebrania i uporządkowania danych z pochodzących z aplikacji biomedycznych badających prawidłowość widzenia barwnego, jak również możliwości ich wykorzystania do automatycznego diagnozowania rodzaju i typu ślepoty barw. W pracy omówiono również przykłady analizy i zastosowania zebranych informacji, m.in. w postaci publikowania ich w postaci ogólnodostępnego kanału RSS czy generowania wykresów w formacie SVG.
    The paper discusses the importance of proper detection of color vision disorders, not only in professional [5, 13, 17], but also in everyday life [14, 15] and describes the interactive method for detecting colorblindness shown in Fig. 1. This method can be used both as a diagnostic tool (e.g. for improving the process of medical examination of candidates for drivers [13]) or for creating the database containing information about people with color vision disorders, allowing further research on the subject. The latter is especially important concerning all introduced or planned legal regulations on granting access to public information for anyone regardless of any criteria (e.g. disability) [11]. The author analyses the usage of XML for sharing data gathered by applications using the described interactive method for detecting color vision disorders. The possibilities of using other means offered by the XML standard, such as RSS channels or generating SVG charts are also discussed.

    W niniejszym artykule przeanalizowano w świetle literatury przedmiotu bariery osób niewidomych w bezwzrokowym dostępie do druku. Autorka przedstawiła dogłębną retrospekcję badań nad zagadnieniami dotyczącymi czytników ekranu i monitorów brajlowskich. Wyodrębnione przez nią bariery obejmują złożoność związaną z konwersją druku na alternatywne media (dotykowe i słuchowe), szkolenie z zakresu technologii wspomagających i gotowość tyflopedagogów, a także brak badań nad dobrymi praktykami instruktażowymi oraz szereg zagadnień związanych z ograniczeniami technologii w obszarach dostępności, użyteczności i doświadczenia użytkownika. W zakończeniu sformułowano zalecenia dotyczące praktyki i przyszłych badań w dziedzinie czytników ekranu oraz monitorów brajlowskich.
    This literature review examines the multiple barriers to non-visual access to print by people who are blind. An in-depth consideration of existing research on specific issues related to screen readers and refreshable braille displays is provided. These barriers include the complexities involved in the conversion of print to alternate media (tactual and auditory), assistive technology instruction and readiness of teachers of students with visual impairments, lack of research on best practices for instruction, and a variety of issues related to technological constraints in the areas of accessibility, usability, and user experience. Recommendations for practice and future research in the areas of screen readers and refreshable braille displays are included.

    Wstęp Przedmiotem badania była ocena percepcji barw przy użyciu testu Farnswortha-Munsella 100-Hue u osób uzależnionych od substancji psychoaktywnych oraz przeanalizowanie nabytych zaburzeń widzenia barw w zależności od czasu trwania uzależnienia i okresu abstynencji. Materiał i metody Do badania zakwalifikowano 95 osób. Wszystkich badanych podzielono na 3 grupy. Grupę I (narkomani) stanowiło 45 osób uzależnionych od substancji psychoaktywnych i nikotyny. Grupę II (palacze) stanowiło 30 osób uzależnionych wyłącznie od nikotyny. Grupa III (abstynenci) obejmowała 20 osób bez uzależnień. We wszystkich grupach przeprowadzono: wywiad chorobowy, badanie ankietowe, standardowe badanie okulistyczne i test Farnswortha-Munsella 100-Hue. Wyniki W teście Farnswortha-Munsella 100-Hue średnie wartości całkowitego wyniku błędów (total error score – TES) dla potrzeb analizy wyrażone w wartościach pierwiastka kwadratowego (√TES) okazały się istotnie wyższe w grupie I niż w pozostałych grupach (p < 0,001). W grupie I istotnie częściej stwierdzano wartości √TES przekraczające normy wiekowe w porównaniu z grupą II (p < 0,01) i III (p < 0,05). Wykazano dodatnią korelację między czasem trwania uzależnienia a wartością √TES (ρ = 0,234, p < 0,05). Wraz z dłuższym okresem abstynencji zmniejszały się wartości √TES, wskazując na poprawę zdolności rozróżniania barw. Wnioski Test Farnswortha-Munsella 100-Hue okazał się przydatny w wykrywaniu i ocenie dyschromatopsji nabytych, wywołanych substancjami psychoaktywnymi. Obserwowane zaburzenia okazały się zależne od czasu używania środków narkotycznych i okresu abstynencji. Med. Pr. 2016;67(6):777–785
    Background The aim of the study was to assess color perception in the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue test in individuals addicted to narcotic substances, and to analyze the acquired color vision disorders, depending on the duration of addiction and abstinence. Material and Methods Ninety-five persons were qualified for the study. All the subjects were divided into 3 groups. Group I (drug addicts) comprised 45 individuals addicted to narcotic substances and nicotine. Group II (smokers) consisted of 30 individuals addicted only to nicotine, and group III (abstinents) included 20 individuals free of addictions. In all the study groups anamnesis, survey, standard ophthalmological examination and the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue test were performed. Results In the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue test the mean values of total error score (TES) for the purposes of the analysis, expressed in the values of square root (√TES), proved to be significantly higher in group I than in the two other groups (p < 0.001). In group I, the √TES values exceeding critical values of age norms occurred significantly more frequently than in groups II (p < 0.01) and III (p < 0.05). A positive correlation between duration of addiction and the √TES values was indicated (ρ = 0.234, p < 0.05). The longer was the period of abstinence, the lower were the √TES values, indicating the improved ability to distinguish between colors. Conclusions The Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue test proved useful in the detection and assessment of acquired dyschromatopsy induced by narcotic substances. The observed disorders appeared to be dependent on the duration of addiction and abstinence. Med Pr 2016;67(6):777–785

    An 8-year-old boy was admitted to the Ophthalmology Department due to a vision impairment with an accompanying decrease in visual acuity and bilateral optic disc oedema. As a result of interdisciplinary diagnostics, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, probably related to preceding infection, was diagnosed.
    8-letni chłopiec został przyjęty do Oddziału Okulistyki z powodu zaburzeń widzenia z towarzyszącym spadkiem ostrości wzroku oraz obustronnym obrzękiem tarcz nerwu wzrokowego. W wyniku przeprowadzonej interdyscyplinarnej diagnostyki rozpoznano ostre rozsiane zapalenie mózgu i rdzenia kręgowego, prawdopodobnie związane z poprzedzającą infekcją.

    The author presents the results of the morphologkal studies on the lens of fish infected experimentally and in a natural way (in the river Vistula near Warsaw) with the metacercariae of both flukes. Basing on this and on the literature data a detailed picture of the pathological changes in the eye lens of infected fish has been constructed, the three development stages being accepted as described by other authors. The mechanisms of the influence of the metacercariae on the eye lens are presented. A particular attention has been paid to the significance of the ontogenetic development and the structure of the eye lens, not considered before, and especially to the fissure in the lens (Fig.). Other symptoms were: besides the damage of the lens surface, changes in its size, deformations, loosening and sometimes breaking, always on the side of the enlarged fissure. Besides, the author confirms the results of observations of other authors and expresses an opinion that the picture of the pathological changes and the degree of vision impairment is influenced by such factors as the density and distribution (signly or in aggregations) of the metacercariae in the lens, and the place of their penetration and the host species.

    The author presents the results of the morphologkal studies on the lens of fish infected experimentally and in a natural way (in the river Vistula near Warsaw) with the metacercariae of both flukes. Basing on this and on the literature data a detailed picture of the pathological changes in the eye lens of infected fish has been constructed, the three development stages being accepted as described by other authors. The mechanisms of the influence of the metacercariae on the eye lens are presented. A particular attention has been paid to the significance of the ontogenetic development and the structure of the eye lens, not considered before, and especially to the fissure in the lens (Fig.).     Opis:
    Posterior cortical atrophy is a rare form of an early-onset dementia syndrome (usually affecting people below 65 years of age) with predominant deficits in visual perception and visuospatial functions. This form of disease is often considered as atypical manifestation of Alzheimer’s disease, also known as its visual variant. Reading difficulties, face and object recognition problems, topographical disorientation, inability to perceive more than one object at a time and misreaching objects under visual control are frequently observed. These deficits lead to progressive loss of independence in the activities of daily living, that occurs earlier than observed in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Cognitive dysfunction is caused by a dysfunction of one or two main visual pathways (dorsal – enabling the localization of stimuli, or ventral – enabling stimulus recognition) and subsequent parietal and/or occipital atrophy. Posterior cortical atrophy may be also associated with other, more complex neurological and psychiatric symptoms. In this paper, clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria of posterior cortical atrophy as well as neuropsychological assessment tools useful in the differential diagnosis and management options, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological, are presented.
    Zanik korowy tylny (posterior cortical atrophy, PCA) to rzadki zespół otępienny z dominującymi zaburzeniami percepcji wzrokowej i deficytem funkcji wzrokowo-przestrzennych. Charakteryzuje się wczesnym początkiem – zwykle przed 65. rokiem życia. Schorzenie to jest najczęściej uznawane za atypową postać choroby Alzheimera, określaną jako jej wariant wzrokowy. U pacjentów obserwuje się trudności z czytaniem, rozpoznawaniem twarzy, obiektów i otoczenia, problemy konstrukcyjne, niemożność jednoczesnego spostrzegania kilku obiektów i sięgania po przedmioty znajdujące się w zasięgu ręki. Wymienione deficyty prowadzą do – wcześniejszej niż u osób z chorobą Alzheimera – utraty samodzielności. Zaburzenia procesów poznawczych wynikają z dysfunkcji jednego lub dwóch głównych szlaków przetwarzających informacje wzrokowe w mózgu (grzbietowego, pozwalającego na lokalizację bodźca, bądź brzusznego, odpowiedzialnego za rozpoznanie bodźca), a następnie z zaniku kory płatów ciemieniowych i/lub potylicznych. Schorzeniu może towarzyszyć bardziej złożona symptomatologia neurologiczna i psychiatryczna. W pracy przedstawiono obraz kliniczny i kryteria diagnostyczne zaniku korowego tylnego, neuropsychologiczne metody użyteczne w procesie diagnozowania, główne problemy związane z różnicowaniem oraz możliwości oddziaływania farmakologicznego i niefarmakologicznego.
