Opis:
Integrating the economic aspects of forest management (cost) with ecological elements of timber production (habitat type) significantly contributes to a better understanding of forest growth and utilisation. The type of silvicultural treatments and forest habitat types determine number of economic activities carried out in the stands and have an important impact on the associated costs. The aim of the study was to describe the impact of silviculture treatments and types of forest habitat on unit timber harvesting cost. We summarised the cost of timber logging depending on the harvest practices and types of habitats. In total, costs of treatments performed on the 2.5 thousand ha area were analysed. Obtained results were combined in relation to average unit costs of raw timber logging from individual habitats and silviculture treatments such as late cleanings and thinnings. The studied impact was assessed with standard deviation (SD) based on the assumption that the higher its value, the more important role of silvicultural treatments and forest habitats in defining the cost of raw timber harvesting. Our study showed that both factors (type of forest habitat and silvicultural treatment) had an effect on variability of timber logging costs. Comparing deciduous and coniferous habitats, higher costs were reported for the latter one. The highest unit cost of timber logging was found on the fresh coniferous habitat, while the lowest on the wet mixed forest. Moreover, the highest cost was reported for timber raw material harvested from late cleanings and the lowest from late thinnings. SD of the average cost of timber harvest ranged from 12.67 to 13.53 PLN depending on the silviculture treatments and from 0.68 to 2.39 PLN depending on the forest type. Our findings are important preliminary steps in broader study regarding revenues generated from forest stands growing on different habitats. Eventually it would help in assessing the profitability of economic activity that depends on environmental conditions of forest management.

Opis:
The paper synthesizes the knowledge on the impact of silvicultural treatments on bat populations. Forest management affects stand structure and composition, and silvicultural treatments exert both positive or negative impact on the activity of individual bat species. Studies published on the issue suggest that forest management may prove useful for the conservation of bat populations, especially in areas that are important to bats. Harvesting system influences spatial and age patterns as well as the share of open woodland areas in forests, which are used by majority of bat species. In particular, polycyclic harvesting systems result in a mosaic of open midforest areas of various size such as clearcuts, group shelterwood cuts and gaps in forest stands, which are very attractive for aging habitats to bats. Common noctules and parti−coloured bats prefer to hunt by flying at high speeds and altitudes above open midforest areas such as clearcuts and group shelterwood cuts. Serotine bats and Nathusius' pipistrelles use smaller gaps and stands treated with shelterwood cuts. Barbastellas and Bechstein's bats prefer more cluttered foraging habitats in dense vegetation and canopy, while long−eared bats fly slower and glean their prey from plants. Selection cutting and irregular group shelterwood methods, which have the fewest cutting constraints, contribute most significantly to creating a mosaic of diversely structured stands and open midforest areas. Forest stands managed with such harvesting systems are the most preferred foraging sites for the largest number of ecomorphological groups of bats. The thinning of trees at younger age reduces density, thus opening up new foraging sites or providing access to such sites to bats, which fly fast, but are less manoeuvre (e.g. common noctules). The loss of roosting habitats for maternity colonies due to tree cutting or microclimate changes in forest stands is the greatest threat from the forest management. Silvicultural treatments affect the structure of forest stands and, in consequence, bat populations. Sustainable forest management may be useful for bat conservation. Forest stands with diverse structure as well a mosaic of variously−sized midforest areas provide the best foraging and mating conditions for the highest number of bat species.

Opis:
The intermediate cuttings have an important impact on the stand structure and productivity. Choosing the right method of the treatment performance is the decision, which is fundamental in shaping tree stands stability. The radial increment, apart from the natural growth potential of particular species, is influenced by many abiotic, biotic and anthropogenic factors, among which one can distinguish those that influence it directly, e.g. thinning. The study objective was to determine the effect of silvicultural treatments on the increment reaction of oak (Quercus sp.) stands in the Międzyrzec Forest District (eastern Poland). The empirical material was collected in six forest stands located in the Witoroż forest range. In each stand we cored 10 dominant and co−dominant trees (representing 1st and 2nd Kraft’s biosocial classes). After the measurements of the tree−ring widths and the synchronization of incremental series, the raw and standard chronologies were elaborated for each stand. In total, we analysed 8 treatments: six early and one late selection thinnings, and one late salvage thinning (tab. 1). For each treatment, three− and five−years’ value of mean tree−ring width was calculated for the period before and after the cut. Additionally, we calculated the incremental response parameters: recovery (Rc), resilience (Rs) and resistance (Rt) indices. For the majority of the analysed treatments, the cuts resulted in an increase in average tree−ring width both in the 3−, and 5−years perspective. However, statistically significant changes in this parameter occurred only in a few cases (fig. 2). The average values of incremental response indicators show that the investigated oak stands are characterized by a significant adaptive capacity and a rapid recovery of incremental capacity in the analysed time spans. At the same time, the low values of Rt index suggest that their growth resistance to disturbance caused by the thinning is rather low. The age of the stand at the time of the treatment significantly affected the incremental response parameters of the examined oaks. The older the stand, the incremental response was less intense.
