    This article shows the teaching and evolution of the practice of the sacraments of Christian Initiation in the Church of Siedlce. Through this article was shown the development of this practice, which in the diocese evolved over many years, so it could reach the current shape of the entire process of Christian Initiation. Under the pastoral care of Bishop Zbigniew Kiernikowski, the attempt was made to create a program of preparation for the catechumenate of adults and unbaptized children of catechetical age. Candidate for initiation walked the path towards initiation by different degrees and stages. The climax point of the preparation process was the celebration of the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil at the Cathedral of Siedlce. The reflection on the sacraments of Christian Initiation exposes a gradual but deeper entering into the paschal mystery of Christ. It was emphasized that it is not enough to receive the sacraments of Christian Initiation, but to enter into the Christian way of life. It is therefore necessary to carry out the formation of adults in the form of pre-baptismal and post-baptismal catechumenate. The development of the practice to administer the sacraments of Christian Initiation indicates that the theology of the sacraments and subsequent recommendations were read correctly in order to bring people to a mature faith in the modern world.

    Opis:
    The sacrament of confirmation is an integral part of Christian initiation. It is not necessary for salvation but together with baptism and the Eucharist forms unity which is the foundation of life in Christ and which should be preserved. Historical and theological reasons confirm it and despite the interruption of chronological order of celebration, liturgical practice also supports this claim. Baptism is incorporation in Christ, in his Mystical Body, confirmation enhances the grace of baptism through the gift of the Holy Spirit, whereas the Eucharist completes and crowns the initiation giving food which is the pledge of eternal life. Facing disquieting phenomena of punctualistic understanding of confirmation in terms of both preparation and mystagogy, the author indicates the criteria of the unity of the sacraments of Christian initiation. In this context, confirmation is not the sacrament of Christian maturity but opening sacramental perspective offers indispensable means of achieving it.
    Sakrament bierzmowania jest integralną częścią wtajemniczenia chrześcijańskiego. Nie jest konieczny do zbawienia, lecz razem z chrztem i Eucharystią tworzy jedność, która jest podstawą życia w Chrystusie i która powinna być zachowywana. Wskazują na to racje historyczne, teologiczne oraz, pomimo zerwania chronologicznej kolejności celebracji, także praktyka liturgiczna. Chrzest jest wszczepieniem w Chrystusa i Jego Mistyczne Ciało, bierzmowanie udoskonala łaskę chrztu przez dar Ducha Świętego, a Eucharystia dopełnia i wieńczy wtajemniczenie, udzielając pokarmu, który jest zadatkiem życia wiecznego. Wobec niepokojących zjawisk punktualistycznego rozumienia bierzmowania zarówno w przygotowaniu, jak i mistagogii, autor wskazuje na konkretne kryteria jedności sakramentów inicjacji chrześcijańskiej. Bierzmowanie w tym kontekście nie jest sakramentem dojrzałości chrześcijańskiej, ale, otwierając sakramentalną perspektywę, daje niezbędne środki do jej osiągnięcia.

    The teaching of the Second and the post-conciliar era gave us an adequate understanding of Christian initiation, which is embedded in the gradual inclusion of the person in communion with Jesus Christ and His Mystical Body, the Church. The sacraments of Christian initiation are: baptism, confirmation, and the Eucharist, which can be administered by ordinary and extraordinary ministers in accordance with canon law. These regulations are prone to development and modification, leaving unchanged the fundamental rules of Divine origin.
    Nauczanie Vaticanum II i okresu posoborowego nadały właściwe rozumienie wtajemniczeniu chrześcijańskiemu, które zasadza się na stopniowym włączaniu człowieka we wspólnotę z Jezusem Chrystusem i Jego mistycznym Ciałem, którym jest Kościół. Do sakramentów wtajemniczenia chrześcijańskiego należą chrzest, bierzmowanie i Eucharystia, których mogą udzielać szafarze zwyczajni i nadzwyczajni stosownie do przepisów prawa kanonicznego. Przepisy te ulegają rozwojowi i modyfikacji, pozostawiając niezmienne fundamentalne zasady pochodzenia Bożego.

    Today, many of the faithful who are preparing for marriage and family life have not received sufficient formation at home—a formation that would ensure that they receive the sacraments of Christian initiation. The sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist graft man onto Christ and enable him to become both a new creature and a member of the Catholic Church. The role of the Church, therefore, is to convey to the faithful the relationship that exists between the sacrament of Marriage, for which they are preparing, and the sacraments of Christian initiation. These sacraments are an integral part of the sacramental economy by which faithful and practicing Christians live. In seeking the proper way to grow in their future life together, engaged couples must perceive the deep connection between married life and the sacraments of initiation. Frequently, however, members of the faithful have received the sacraments of Christian initiation but have not truly encountered Christ in their lives. In this case, such individuals neither understand what the Christian community is, nor do they feel like they are full members of the Church to which they were introduced by virtue of the sacraments. Therefore, it is necessary to seek solutions to help these individuals create a marital and family life that is permeated by Christ’s presence.
    We współczesnych czasach zauważa się, że osoby przygotowujące się do życia małżeńskiego i rodzinnego nie otrzymały wystarczającej formacji w domu rodzinnym co powinny gwarantować sakramenty wtajemniczenia chrześcijańskiego. Sakramenty chrztu, bierzmowania i Eucharystii wszczepiają człowieka w Chrystusa i powodują, że przyjmujący je staje się nowym stworzeniem i pełnoprawnym członkiem Kościoła. Rolą Kościoła jest ukazywanie związku, jaki istnieje między sakramentem małżeństwa, do którego człowiek wierzący się przygotowuje, a sakramentami wtajemniczenia chrześcijańskiego. Wpisują się one integralnie w ekonomię sakramentalną, którą żyje wierzący i praktykujący chrześcijanin. Przyszli małżonkowie poszukując właściwej drogi rozwoju wspólnego życia, mogą dostrzec głębokie więzi między życiem małżeńskim a sakramentami wtajemniczenia. Zdarzają się jednak sytuacje, że osoby, które przyjęły sakramenty inicjacji chrześcijańskiej nie spotkały w swoim życiu Chrystusa. Nie rozumieją czym jest chrześcijańska wspólnota i nie czują się w pełni członkami Kościoła, do którego zostali na mocy sakramentów wprowadzeni. Dlatego należy szukać rozwiązań, które pomogą w tym, aby ich życie małżeńsko-rodzinne zostało przeniknięte obecnością Chrystusa.

    The inspiration to write an article on the above topic was the publication by the Pastoral Commission Conference of the Polish Episcopate of the first part of a two-year pastoral program of the Church in Poland for the years 2017–2019. This two-year program is called „The Spirit Who Strengthens Love”, while the first part which inspired us is entitled „We are filled with the Holy Spirit”. The content of the article consists of seven points. The first is devoted to the essence of Confirmation, the way it is administered in the oldest tradition of the Church and the evolutionary changes introduced to it. The second one touches upon the question of the minister of Confirmation, which in the Western Church (as opposed to the Eastern) has always been the Bishop. The third point deals with new elements introduced successively to the ordinances of confirmation – especially concerning the act of anointing with chrism, introduced to the rite under the influence of the eastern chrismatio, and also assigning to the sacrament the name confirmatio. The fourth point acquaints us with the practice of administering the sacrament of confirmation – from administering it during one, indivisible rite of Christian initiation (immediately after baptism and before the Eucharist), to today’s conditions in which the young person to be Confirmed was previously baptized in childhood. The fifth point asks and tries to answer the question as to whether there is a so-called sacrament of Christian maturity, which is what Confirmation is considered today and how it is taught. The sixth point acquaints us with the effects and tasks that flow from the fact of administering/receiving confirmation. Whereas the seventh formulates some remarks and pastoral requirements.
    Inspiracją do napisania artykułu na powyższy temat stało się opublikowanie przez Komisję Duszpasterstwa Konferencji Episkopatu Polski pierwszej części z dwuletniego Programu duszpasterskiego Kościoła w Polsce na lata 2017–2019. Ów dwuletni program nosi tytuł: „Duch, który umacnia miłość”, natomiast inspirującą nas jego część pierwszą opatrzono tytułem: „Jesteśmy napełnieni Duchem Świętym”. Na treść artykułu składa się siedem punktów. Pierwszy poświęcony jest istocie sakramentu bierzmowania, sposobowi udzielania go w najstarszej tradycji Kościoła oraz ewolucyjnym zmianom, jakie do niego wprowadzano. Drugi porusza kwestię szafarza bierzmowania, którym w Kościele zachodnim (w przeciwieństwie do Kościołów wschodnich) jest od zawsze biskup. Trzeci punkt traktuje o nowych elementach wprowadzanych sukcesywnie do obrzędów bierzmowania – chodzi szczególnie o czynność namaszczenia krzyżmem, wprowadzoną do obrzędu pod wpływem wschodniego chrismatio, a także o przypisanie bierzmowaniu nazwy confirmatio. Czwarty punkt zaznajamia nas z praktyką szafowania bierzmowania – od udzielania go w ciągu jednego, niepodzielnego obrzędu wtajemniczenia chrześcijańskiego (zaraz po chrzcie, a przed Eucharystią), do dzisiejszych uwarunkowań, w których do bierzmowania przystępuje młodzież ochrzczona w dzieciństwie. Piąty punkt stawia pytanie, czy istnieje tzw. sakrament dojrzałości chrześcijańskiej, za jaki uważa się dziś bierzmowanie – i tak się o nim uczy, oraz stara się dać na takie pytanie odpowiedź. Szósty punkt zaznajamia nas ze skutkami i zadaniami, jakie płyną z faktu przyjęcia/udzielenia bierzmowania. Siódmy natomiast formułuje pewne uwagi i duszpasterskie postulaty.

    Biorąc pod uwagę posoborowe podejście do sakramentologii, oparte na idei Kościoła Chrystusowego jako żywej historii zbawienia, treść artykułu odnosi się do eklezjalnych aspektów programu duszpasterskiego Kościoła w Polsce. Dlatego sakrament bierzmowania jest ujęty w perspektywie eklezjologicznej, bez zbytniego zgłębiania problematyki katechetycznej czy liturgicznej. Najpierw zwraca uwagę na sakrament dojrzałości chrześcijańskiej w aspekcie trwałości Kościoła jako ludu Bożego. W kolejnym paragrafie koncentruje się na uczestnictwie tych, którzy przyjęli sakrament bierzmowania w apostolskich zadaniach ludu Bożego, akcentując zwłaszcza przyjęcie przez nich pełnej odpowiedzialności za losy Kościoła. Zwieńczeniem artykułu jest zobrazowanie ewangelizacji współczesnego świata przez ubogacenie świata nowym obliczem świętości na miarę królestwa Bożego, które przez Chrystusa w mocy Ducha Świętego nieustannie wzrasta wśród ludzi, aż do ostatecznego spełnienia w Bogu, który będzie „wszystkim we wszystkich” (por. 1 Kor 15,24.28).
    Theological and ecclesial aspects of confirmation Summary Considering the post-conciliar approach to sacramentology based on the idea of the Church of Christ as a living history of salvation, the article presents the sacrament of confirmation in its ecclesiological aspect. First, it draws attention to the sacrament of Christian maturity in the aspect of the Church’s stability as the people of God. In the next paragraph it focuses on the participation of those who have accepted the sacrament of confirmation in the apostolic tasks of God’s people, emphasizing in particular their taking full responsibility for the fate of the Church. The climax of the article is the depiction of the modern world’s evangelization by enriching the world with a new ideal of holiness according to the Kingdom of God, which through Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit is constantly increasing among people until the final fulfillment in God who will be „all in all” (see 1 Cor 15:24.28).

    In the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy “Sacrosanctum Concilium”, Council Fathers of Vatican II marking the direction of liturgical renewal, stated that in the Western Church “the catechumenate for adults, comprising several distinct steps, is to be restored. … By this means the time of the catechumenate, which is intended as a period of suitable instruction, may be sanctified by sacred rites to be celebrated at successive intervals of time” (SC 64). Furthermore, the authors of the Constitution decided that “both the rites for the baptism of adults are to be revised: not only the simpler rite, but also the more solemn one, which must take into account the restored catechumenate” (SC 66). The fulfillment of the postulates of the Vatican II was the proclamation of a new ritual “Ordo initiationis christianae adultorum” in 1972. Thus, in 2017 it has been 45 years since the Latin editio typica was promulgated and 30 years since the Polish edition of the rite was published. The document entered into force by the decision of the Episcopate of Poland on May 14th , 1989. Despite the passing years, this post-conciliar document remains practically unknown and is rarely used in liturgical, catechetical and pastoral praxis in Poland. It refers mostly to catechumenate but also, to a lesser extent, to the practice of granting sacraments of Christian initiation for adults. It might be suspected that the “fortunate reason” for such a state of affairs is the fact that the sacrament of baptism is commonly received in Poland by infants and a very small minority of adults prepare for the sacrament of Christian initiation. It does not imply, however, that the baptized possess a mature Christian formation and basic religious knowledge despite attending classes of religious education in schools and parishes. There is an urgent need for post-baptismal catechumenate, also known as deuterocatechumenate or repeated catechumenate. The “Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” is still an undiscovered document. However, catechumenate of adults or post-baptismal catechumenate suggested by the “Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” should be a regular form of pastoral practice. Its aim is to lead adults to mature faith and conscious participation in the Paschal Mystery of Christ. The article offers a presentation and rereading of the post-conciliar document which still awaits to be rediscovered in both parish and special pastoral practice as well as in liturgy, especially in the annual liturgical celebrations.

    Autor analizuje zauważane przez niektórych duszpasterzy napięcie pomiędzy celebrowaniem Eucharystii w małych wspólnotach istniejących w parafiach a jednością parafii jako całości oraz teologiczne zasady tej jedności w świetle wybranych wypowiedzi Magisterium Kościoła XX i XXI wieku. Analiza tekstów Magisterium wskazała, że jedność parafii ma wymiar najpierw duchowy, niewidzialny, a następnie także zewnętrzny, widzialny. Konstytuują ją przede wszystkim więzy wyznania wiary, sakramentów, kościelnej hierarchii oraz komunii. Jedność między parafianami buduje się poprzez wtajemniczanie ich w Misterium paschalne oraz w codzienne obcowanie ze Słowem Bożym. W myśl nauczania papieży Jana Pawła II i Benedykta XVI małe wspólnoty zamiast zagrażać jedności parafii, mogą przyczynić się do umocnienia jej jedności poprzez prowadzenie parafian do zjednoczenia z Misterium paschalnym. Wnioski teologiczne autor uzupełnił wynikami badań socjologicznych stanu religijności osób świeckich w parafiach, które sygnalizują poważny kryzys życia wiary i moralności oraz potrzebę sięgania po małe wspólnoty jako środowisko formacyjne i narzędzie wtajemniczenia chrześcijańskiego dorosłych.
    The author analyses the problem of parish unity faced with separate Eucharistic celebrations organised by small communities existing in a parish. He tries to formulate theological principles of that unity in the light of the Magisterial documents of 20th and 21st century. The unity of a parish is most importantly connected with the spiritual, invisible dimension, which is also expressed in the external, visible way by bonds of profession of faith, sacraments, Church hierarchy, and communion. Unity between parishioners is built by initiating them into the Paschal Mystery and into daily meditation of the Word of God. Instead of seeing in them a threat to unity, both John Paul II and Benedict XVI indicate that small communities participate in the process of strengthening the unity of the parish by leading people along the mystagogical way towards the initiation into the Paschal Mystery. The author also refers to sociological data about religiosity in contemporary Polish parishes indicating that there is a serious crisis in the life of faith and a dire need for the communities as a means of Christian initiation.
