Szymborska Once AgainThe review discusses the volume Unthinkable coincidence. On Poetry by Wisława Szymborska edited by Joanna Grądziel-Wójcik and Krzysztof Skibski. In six parts of the book the authors of Unthinkable coincidence… point out nad investigate the most important issues present in the poetic work of the Nobel Prize laureate: the anthropological perspective, the unanthropocentric model of humanity and human condition, existential and metaphysical problems, philosophical contexts, irony, figures of memory, silence, uncertainty and helplessness, models of poetics and metrics of Szymborska’s poems. The last two parts of the volume focus on translations of Szymborska’s poems into English, Bulgarian, Czech and Slovak, on Szymborska’s translations of French baroque poets and on her images in Polish media form 1995 to 2012 and her posthumous traces in German newspapers. In the conclusion the reviewer describes the volume as the first really significant Polish collection of essays on Szymborska’s poetry since her death in 2012.

This article explores book of poems entitled Requiem for Saddam Hussein and Other Poems for the Poor in Spirit by Konrad Góra in the light of animal studies. Looking at the poetic and beyond poetic activity of its author, this work reffers to Joanna Żylińska's question about ethical living founded on understandig of life both as zoe and bios. Think of the special opposition of village and city is trying to read this book in connection with mentioned vision of life. These both areas shows presentifications and redefinings of persona in poems from Requiem and beyond poetic activity. By concentrating on poems specific for „nature” and „civilization this research will show how the mechanism of subordinating bare life (la nuda vita) works and how it concerns to both sides of the opposition of village and city. This article ask also for non-victims community, position and power of modern literature and involvment.

W artykule krótko zaprezentowano kilka najszerzej dyskutowanych inicjatyw formacyjnych w poezji polskiej po roku 1989, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem najnowszej poezji zaangażowanej. Autor wiąże pojęcie „pokolenie” z problematyką tożsamości, ale w przeciwieństwie do tradycyjnego ujęcia Kazimierza Wyki rozumie ją nie tyle jako efekt doświadczenia generacyjnego, ale przede wszystkim jako element projektu tożsamościowego. Stawia tezę, że pokoleniowość poetek i poetów współczesnych należy rozumieć w kategoriach konwencji, mającej na celu wpisanie biografii jednostek w szerszy kontekst biografii wspólnotowej, a także będącej programem kolektywnego zaangażowania w życie społeczne i polityczne. Tak rozumiane pojęcie „pokolenie” przestaje być wyłącznie historycznoliteracką etykietą i stanowić może istotną kategorię analityczną.
The article presents a selected formative projects of polish poetry after 1989—especially contemporary engaged poetry—that have been frequently discussed so far. The author connects the term ‘generation’ with identity issues, however—contrary to Kazimierz Wyka—he does not understand it as an effect of generational experience, but rather as a part of an identity project. The author claims that the contemporary poets’ generations should be considered in the terms of conventionality, therefore the aim is to link an individual biography up to a broader context of a community’s biography. Moreover it stems from an idea of collective socio-political engagement. The ‘generation’ understood this way is no longer just a term of literary history, but on the contrary—a relevant interpretative tool.

Jerzy Ficowski’s biblical fragments The article is a general and panoramic attempt at defining the basic forms of the presence of Bible in Jerzy Ficowski’s poetry. It was estblished that biblical themes are not central elements of the poetic world of the author of Inicjał. Nevertheless, they are constantly present throughout his works. The poet most often refers to the Old Testament. In particular, Ficowski is almost obsessively focused on the motif of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and original sin. The theme is present in a number of poems written during the period of a couple decades. Those poems are the subject of a more detailed analysis and interpretation of the present article. Adam Zagajewski’s poetry proves how complex man’s relationship with the sacred can be. Despite the poet’s testimony of complete independence from established formations, including denominational ones, in his early work, when he described himself as “an atheist of both churches, non-partisan among party members, an unbeliever among believers, uncertain among the convinced” (Mogę mówić tylko za siebie [I can only speak for myself]; Oda do wielości [Ode to multiplicity], Zagajewski 1983), literary criticism has long emphasized the presence of a broadly conceived sphere of the sacred in his poetry. When reading Zagajewski’s poems, one has the impression that the sacred is permanently present, and that the poet is constantly brushing against the figure of the Absolute, while not being able (or sometimes not wanting) to fully see it. The reader even gets the impression that perhaps this may be a purposeful impossibility. For Zagajewski, an extremely important theme is circular movement, constant circling around the same issue, and a need for constant questioning. This article discusses these complex relations, proving that Zagajewski consistently reflects in on the figure of the Absolute, that the subject of his poems seeks the sacred, and that the question of the Absolute seems to be more than a poetic strategy for the author, but also a very personal dilemma. The poet died on March 21, 2021.
Poezja Adama Zagajewskiego dowodzi, jak wysoce skomplikowana bywa relacja człowieka z sacrum. Mimo świadectwa całkowitej niezależności od ustanowionych formacji, także wyznaniowych, jakie poeta dał w początkowej fazie twórczości, kiedy to określił się mianem „ateisty obydwu kościołów, / bezpartyjnego wśród partyjnych, / niewierzącego wśród wiernych, / niepewnego pośród przekonanych” (Mogę mówić tylko za siebie; List. Oda do wielości, Zagajewski 1983), w krytyce literackiej od dawna podkreślana bywa obecność w jego poezji szeroko pojmowanej sfery sacrum. Podczas lektury wierszy Zagajewskiego odbiorca ma wrażenie, że sacrum jest w nich permanentnie obecne, że poeta co rusz ociera się o figurę Absolutu, jednocześnie nie mogąc (nie potrafiąc, czasem nie chcąc) jej w pełni dojrzeć. Czytelnik odnosi nawet wrażenie, że być może jest to niemożność programowa, bowiem dla Zagajewskiego nadzwyczaj istotne znaczenie ma ruch kolisty, nieustanne krążenie wokół tej samej kwestii, konieczność ciągłego podawania w wątpliwość. Niniejszy artykuł przybliża te złożone relacje, dowodząc, że Zagajewski konsekwentnie prowadzi w swych wierszach refleksję nad figurą Absolutu, że podmiot jego wierszy poszukuje sacrum, a pytanie o Absolut zdaje się mieć dla twórcy charakter nie tylko strategii poezjotwórczej, lecz także dylematu bardzo osobistego. Poeta zmarł 21 marca 2021 r.

Finding the “common language of fire”: Jerzy Ficowski on Jewish mysticism (prolegomena) This article is an attempt to outline the relationship between the work of Jerzy Ficowski and the Jewish mystical thought that was brought in this paper to a kabbalistic element – a synthesis of components considered basic for two great currents of the non-orthodox Judaism: Kabbalah and Hasidism. At the level of content they consist of the motifs of the Book, Word and Letter, Angels and Light, the messianic topos of the Just, cosmogonic and eschatological myths, as well as specific, non-linear recognition of time – which are strongly present in the poetry of the author of the Regions of the Great Heresy. At the level of structure there are noticeable the emanation model and the duality of language and imagination, of matter and spirituality – diametrically different elements, yet gravitating toward the ultimate unity. The text, containing references to translation and “Schulzian” output of Jerzy Ficowski, is focused on his poetry and is an introduction to its aspectual monograph. Jednocześnie prezentuje taką strategię lektury, która – performatywnie, za sprawą interpretacyjnych pasaży – wchodzi w rezonans z praktyką poetycką Świetlickiego i pozwala wybrzmieć zwłaszcza tym modalnościom jego wierszy, które ufundowane zostały na egzystencjalnie zakorzenionych formach „obecności” i na związanych z nimi uobecnieniach „głosu”. Uchwyceniu tych rejestrów poezji autora Schizmy służy również wykorzystana przez Próchniaka forma eseju mówionego.
The author presents a comprehensive interpretation of Marcin Świetlicki’s poetry, emphasizing the modeling role of the gesture of opening the poet’s creative path and highlighting the key threads and figures of imagination that organize his work. At the same time, he presents a strategy of reading that – performatively, thanks to interpretive passages – resonates with Świetlicki›s poetic practice and allows the modalities of his poems to resound, which are founded on the existentially rooted forms of “presence” and related presentations of the “voice” with them. The form of the spoken essay used by Próchniak also serves to capture these registers of the poetry of the author of Schizma.

The paper attempts to interpret Wisława Szymborska’s poem The Night which takes up the Old Testament story of Abraham sacrificing Isaac on the Mount Moriah. The author tries to demonstrate how the poet – using the child’s voice – argues with the biblical text. The introduction of the contexts of developmental psychology and of Jewish Passover together with a detailed analysis lead to the conclusion that Szymborska’s poem – employing emotional and intellectual simplifications – constitutes an ideological statement.

This paper presents an analysis of a selection of poems: Edward Pasewicz's Egzotycznej rybie z akwarium w Café 2000 [For the exotic fish in the tank in Café 2000]; Agnieszka Mirahina's Żelazo [Iron]; and poems by Andrzej Sosnowski. These works are analysed in the context of selected theoretical investigations by Jacques Derrida, Erich Fromm and Martin Heidegger. The aim of the analysis is to present the lyrical work as a translation of the human experience of reality. A poem which is transgressive in nature is a record of an experience. In this paper, the term experience is defined in three ways. Firstly, as a strong sensation that leaves a trace in human psyche. Secondly, as a unique and unrepeatable vision of imagination or consciousness, preserved in the form of a poem. Thirdly, as a phenomenon that shows the “lacking, defective nature” of literature and of the human being. Contemporary Polish transgressive poetry gives evidence in favour of the thesis of impossibility of retaining a constant, definitive and unchangeable relationship between the human being and the world.

W artykule poddano analizie wiersze Adama Zagajewskiego wpisujące się w konwencję elegijną. Rekapitulując wcześniejsze ustalenia badaczy dotyczące funkcji elegii w poezji Zagajewskiego, autor przedstawia własne interpretacje wybranych utworów. Dowodzi, że forma elegijna, realizująca się w twórczości Zagajewskiego na wiele różnych sposobów, nie jest wyłącznie wyrazem nostalgii poety za przeszłością. Przywołując minione zdarzenia, wspominając zmarłych znajomych, a także podtrzymując pamięć o o ofiarach Holocaustu, Zagajewski czyni bohatera lirycznego swoich wierszy strażnikiem pamięci o przeszłości, której trzeba umożliwić oddziaływanie na przyszłość.
The article analyses Adam Zagajewski's poems that observe the elegiac convention. While summarizing the existing critical thought on the function of elegia in Zagajewski's poetry, the author presents his own interpretations of selected works. He proves that the elegiac form, realised in Zagajewski's work in many different ways, is not just an expression of the poet's nostalgia for the past. By recalling past events, by remembering his deceased friends, and by maintaining the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, Zagajewski makes the lyrical hero of his poems the guardian of the past. This remembrance must be allowed to influence the future.

Bogusława Latawiec jest autorką krótkich form prozatorskich na pograniczu eseju, które ujawniają stosunek poetki do sztuki słowa i opowiadają jednocześnie osobistą historię kobiety piszącej. Utwory te stanowią próbę dialogicznego określenia „ja” w konfrontacji z tekstami kultury, zyskują wartość autoprezentacyjną i prowadzą do wypracowania własnego projektu poetyckiego. Latawiec sięga po formę eseistycznej próby, wykorzystując jej cząstkowość, dyskursywność, intelektualizm i autobiograficzność, co pozwala jej poprzez metakrytyczną refleksję rozpoznawać i konstruować własną tożsamość.
Bogusława Latawiec is the author of – among others – short prose verging on essay. These works reveal her attitude towards the art of words and at the same time they tell the private history of the woman writer. It is a dialogic attempt to define herself in confrontation with the texts of culture. Short prose by Latawiec has the potential of self-presentation and leads to working out of an individual poetic project. Bogusława Latawiec values this literary form for its fragmentarity, discursiveness, intellectuality and autobiographicalness; paired with metacritical reflexion it allows her to recognize and to construct her own identity.

Baroque concepts in contemporary Polish prose One of the most identifiable features of baroque poetics is the concept. It can be understood as a set of tricks or as a stylistic and creative idea that defines the way authors think. Due to its use of paradox, the concept has attracted the interest of contemporary literature created under the auspices of postmodernism. This article attempts to show some solutions of Polish contemporary and recent literature that refers to the tradition of the concept. The operation of the concept takes place both on the external literary level (polymedia genres) and on the internal literary level (narrative figures derived from baroque poetics).

W omówieniach dorobku autorki Anaglifów motywy i tematy przyrodnicze pojawiają się stosunkowo często, jednak do tej pory rzadko traktowane były jako główny, samodzielny przedmiot analizy. Szkic poprzez interpretację poszczególnych utworów pokazuje, w jaki sposób natura, w tym wypadku zwłaszcza pojawiające się pod różną postacią drzewa, na przestrzeni publikowanych kolejno tomów kształtują wyobraźnię pisarską Miłobędzkiej i wpisują się w wypracowany przez nią projekt poetycki, wykraczający poza ramy strategii literackiej, którego założenia pozwalają umieścić go w obszarze ekopoetyki.
The article is an attempt to place Krystyna Miłobędzka’s poetry in the context of ecopoetics and to see whether such a targeted reading will open the poet’s lyrical works to new interpretative practices, which are becoming increasingly popular among researchers. In the discussion about the output of the author of Anaglify [Anaglyphs], natural motifs and themes appear relatively often, but so far they have rarely been treated as the main, independent subject of analysis. This sketch, through the interpretation of individual works, shows how nature, in this case especially that appearing in different forms of trees, in the volumes published in turn shape Miłobędzka’s writer’s imagination and inscribe themselves in the poetic project she has developed, which goes beyond the framework of literary strategy and whose assumptions allow it to be placed in the area of ecopoetics.

Opis:
The article discusses different variants of metareflection in Julia Hartwig’s poetry, situating them against the background of a comprehensive concept of the poet’s work. The analysis of her poem Reprymenda [Reprimand] gives rise to a proposal of authotematism specific to Hartwig’s poetry, here called ‘out of the blue’ autothematism and contrasted with the concept of avant-garde poetry. This metapoetic formula is then extended to other texts in the volume Jasne niejasne [Bright Unclear], in which the mimetic aspect of literature in particular is problematised and the ethical dimension of Hartwig’s oeuvre is highlighted.

W artykule dokonano porównawczej analizy i interpretacji dwóch wierszy poświęconych Bratu Albertowi. Są to kolejno: Tadeusza Kubiaka Klasztor Brata Alberta oraz Anny Kamieńskiej Spotkanie z Bratem Albertem. W konkluzji autor doszedł do wniosku, że dla obojga poetów – choć w różny sposób i w różnym stopniu - postać Brata Alberta nie stanowi jednak autonomicznego tematu i problemu twórczości, ale jest raczej traktowana jako pretekst dla ich własnych przemyśleń i poszukiwań artystycznych.
The core of the article is the comparative analysis and interpretation of two poems dedicated to St. Brother Albert: „Brother Albert’s Monastery” by Tadeusz Kubiak and „Meeting with Brother Albert” by Anna Kamieńska. Author’s thesis leads to the conclusion that Brother Albert as a person is not autonomous theme in Kamieńska and Kubiak work - on a different level of understanding poets treat Brother Albert’s figure more like a pretext to unveil their own reflections and artistic thoughts.
