The Operation Guidelines for the UNESCO World Heritage Convention state that proposed areas should: “..be outstanding examples representing major stages of Earth’s history, including the record of life”, “..contain all or most of the key interrelated and interdependent elements in their natural relationships”, “..have a management plan…” and “..have adequate long-term legislative, regulatory, institutional or traditional protection..”. By definition, Global Stratotype Sections and Points (GSSPs) should satisfy all these criteria, although in isolation, the proposal of any single GSSP is unlikely to succeed, however, as an individual site may lack a broader context. Nevertheless, combining a suite of GSSPs sites for a System within a ‘serial’ World Heritage site proposal would satisfy such a concern and could be an ultimate goal for the International Subcommission on Jurassic Stratigraphy.

The abstract of this article presents efforts undertaken during the last two decades, to put Gdańsk – one of the oldest cities of the Republic of Poland – on UNESCO World Heritage List and, based on archival materials and the author’s own experience, analyses the reasons for the ineffectiveness of those attempts. The criteria to achieve this goal have been subject to a number of changes and modifications. The development of conservation concepts of the last decades, especially seeing the intangible heritage values, has created an opportunity for a broad appreciation of places, typically attributable to the reflexive points of modern history. It is the Solidarity Shipyard, perpetuated in the public consciousness, which still remains such a place. Whether it will prove worthy of the World Heritage List, should be decided by the persons responsible for its contemporary protection.

Settler-colonialism
Opis:
Mound-building was a preoccupation for the original, Indigenous occupants of the eastern portion of North America for at least six centuries. The efforts, from small to monumental, reflect a precision, often reflecting astronomical phenomena and are proliferated across the region. Today many remnants of these extraordinary efforts remain despite the systems of erasure that are characteristic of settler colonialism. Two such sites are the focus of this paper: the Newark Earthworks and Serpent Mound. Both sites are short-listed for UNESCO World Heritage status. Newark, Hopewell, and Serpent are all names given by dominant culture with no relation to the Indigenous architects and builders. They endure and resist, despite a long and complicated history of dominance. This paper offers a brief historical contextualization to demonstrate the ramifications of settler colonialism, which ruptured connections between Indigenous people and this land while simultaneously reinterpreting the sites as distinctly American. This lays a foundation for the web of narratives refashioned and recirculated in today’s contest over World Heritage status. Central to these narratives is ascribing the label of “sacred” to the sites and the vast number of constituents who claim “ownership” of them, including both local and global governmental agencies, historical societies, Native peoples, academics, and golfers. Furthermore, we can include those with religious and/or spiritual claims to the mounds such as the Mormons, new-agers, fundamentalist Christians, and contemporary Native tribes. Many of these stakeholders have come together to work toward the coveted World Heritage Status. But, if and when that happens, whose story will dominate? Who will make decisions? Whose voice will be heard?

Opis:
As a consequence of its long history of more than 250 years, the Douro Demarcated Region (NE Portugal) boasts a distinct cultural landscape typified by terraces filled with the regional variety of grapevine - it is a region where famous wines are produced, in particular Port wine. Nevertheless, especially after the 1980s, the need to cover labour shortages and increase productivity led to a gradual change in the landscape, and today the traditional terraces are mixed with new types of vineyards, such as the “vinha ao alto” (vertical vines) and “vinha em patamares” (vines on terraces). Against this backdrop, and with a view to preserving the landscape in a sustainable and multifunctional way, UNESCO awarded the region the “Evolving Living Landscape, World Heritage” award. In this article we combine extensive documentary research with productive field work in order to question the relationship between the need to preserve an exceptional, cultural landscape and the need for regional sustainability in this World Heritage site.

Many (World Heritage) cultural landscapes are a living environment for thousands of inhabitants, visitors, entrepreneurs, farmers and other land users. In order to manage such landscapes we have to consider the legal framework and the reality of the regional planning culture. The ‘landscape of regional players’ consists of a wide range of stakeholders. How should regions tackle natural and cultural heritage as an integrated part of regional development? The discussion of Austria’s Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut World Heritage region involves vertical and horizontal dimensions of governance, including politics, administration, private businesses and civil society.

Applied research in geomorphology includes landform analysis and evaluation from a specific perspective of scientific significance and global relevance. In this paper, landform diversity of Seoraksan, Republic of Korea, a UNESCO World Heritage candidate, is compared with geomorphic characteristics of two World Heritage properties in China, Huangshan and Sanqingshan. Seoraksan represents an almost complete mountain geomorphic system of considerable contemporary dynamics, with outstanding scenery and spectacular landforms such as domes, fins, bedrock channels, waterfalls, and inherited block fields. It is argued that Seoraksan contains outstanding scientific and aesthetic values, not present at the Chinese properties, offering scope for successful nomination.

Opis:
The central organisation around which Polish cooperation with UNESCO on implementing the World Heritage Convention has been concentrated from the beginning is the Polish National Committee ICOMOS. The cooperation has been organised by institutions and people connected in some way with the Committee. Specialised institutions were gradually joining the cooperation. One example of such measures was the appointment of the Board of Historical Gardens and Palaces Conservation, transformed subsequently into the Centre for the Protection of Historic Landscape in Warsaw. A „garden” conservation society has gathered around this institution, composed of art historians, landscape architects, architects and gardeners. They have been carrying out interdisciplinary works concerning historic gardens and cultural landscapes in Poland. Their cooperation with the Polish National Committee ICOMOS and the International Committee of Historic Gardens and Sites ICOMOS – IFLA was connected with the activities of UNESCO. Major activities of the Centre include: valuation and assessment of cultural landscapes for the World Heritage List; drawing up, in collaboration with the Fürst-Pückler-Park Bad Muskau Foundation, an application for the inscription of Park Muskau in the UNESCO World Heritage List; organisation of international conference: „The Regional Expert Meeting on Cultural Landscapes in Eastern Europe” in Białystok in 1999 at the request of WHC UNESCO; organisation of international conference „Cemetery Art” in 1993 at the request of WHC UNESCO, along with accompanying exhibitions concerning specific issues, organised by the Board of Historical Gardens and Palaces Conservation in Warsaw.

Aim. Employability has gained increased interest after the respective global shocks of 2008 and 2020. The study deepens the theory of employability in relation to a globally significant tourism industry. The aim of the study is to identify the core dimensions of the employability of tour-guides. Method. The study adopted a qualitatively intrinsic case study at a world heritage site (WHS), namely the Maropeng Visitor Centre. The researcher focused on the notion of employability for tour-guides, based on existing research gaps regarding those two central concepts. Results. The study determines the roles and responsibilities of tour-guides so as to align these to the notion of employability capital of tour-guides. Secondly, the study probed how higher education institutions (HEIs) should contribute to tour-guides’ employability particularly, and their employability capital, generally. Moreover, misconceptions emerged about HEIs’ offerings concerning employability and tour-guides’ education. Conclusions. Employability capital has become a factor influencing success in the work environment. This study revealed the importance of practical courses in tourism education (tour guiding, first aid, and additional languages) and highlighted the imperative to understand students’ skills and capabilities within the scope of practical training courses. Originality. The study advances knowledge on employability capital in relation to tour guiding at WHS. This would help to develop a better system that would increase employability capital in the tour-guiding sector.

The 100th anniversary of discovery of “Krzemionki” complex of the prehistoric striped flint mines, which is thought to be the greatest prehistorical monument in Poland and one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe, will be celebrated in a few years. Along with that, the efforts began aimed at entering the mines on the UNESCO World Heritage List. For those reasons, the analysis of the past and present threats for the site, accompanied by the proposals of adequate conservation actions, is worth carrying out. It will make it possible to create a complex management plan, in which the tasks related to the protection of the archaeological and natural heritage will be adequately combined with the research activities and making the site available to the public.

Maroko posiada osiem obiektów wpisanych na listę Światowego Dziedzictwa UNESCO. Większość z nich to mediny – starówki miejskie centralnej i północnej części kraju. Część południowa, granicząca z terytoriami saharyjskimi budziła do niedawna mniejsze zainteresowanie badaczy.
Morocco boasts eight objects entered into the UNESCO World Heritage List. The majority of them are medina quarters – old town districts found in the central and northern part of the country. Until recently, the southern part bordering on the Saharan territories did not arouse much scientifi c interest. Ait-bin-Haddu, near Warzazat, is the only architectonic complex on the List, although similar magnifi cent monuments can be found in the south of Morocco, in the Dra, Ziz and Tafilalt valleys. Besides their unique form, their greatest value lies in the manner of their construction using traditional, seemingly impermanent materials which have survived for centuries. Weather conditions, but also man’s activity on an increasing scale, have a destructive infl uence on the priceless buildings. In order to preserve them, the current government with the help of the UNESCO, have introduced a large-scale interdisciplinary conservation programme.

In the period between ratification of the Convention and its coming into effect in 1977, Poland became an important centre for shaping the global identification and cultural heritage preservation system. The 1976 Warsaw Governmental Experts Conference concerning protection and role of historic and traditional complexes allowed for adopting a definition thereof. “A meeting of experts on the improvement and harmonization of systems on the inventories and catalogues of monuments” which took place in Warsaw in 1977, was the next stage. Polish delegate, who had been chosen a vice-president of the Committee during the first session thereof in 1977, submitted a set of comments on operational directives on the criteria for historical value, authenticity, urban complexes, and technological artefacts. Polish nominations provided illustration of this intricate matter. These included: urban complex of Cracow, Wieliczka Salt Mine, Warsaw Old Town (rebuilt after WW2), and the former Concentration Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Polish ICOMOS presented the “Protection and Management in Cities of Exceptional Monumental Value” programme in 1995, which was subsequently accepted by UNESCO.
