Pogranicze może być rozumiane i określane jako synteza między tym, co strukturalne a tym, co funkcjonalne. Współczesna socjologia stała się istotnym elementem szerszego rozumienia świata kultury i życia społecznego. Pogranicze polsko–czeskie jest systemem charakterystycznych społecznych rzeczywistości tak samo jak miejscem spotkania dwóch właściwie różnych kultur. Cechą charakterystyczną obszaru polsko–czeskiego pogranicza jest dywersyfikacja tego krajobrazu. Na pograniczu są nie tylko zakłady przemysłowe, ale regiony rolnicze, jak również zwykłe gospodarstwa domowe. Pogranicze polsko–czeskie stanowią oddzielne i połączone jednocześnie, kraje o podobnej społeczno–politycznej strukturze oraz podobnym potencjale ekonomicznym. Oba kraje prawie w tym samym czasie podjęły starania o integrację z Unią Europejską, co było przyczyną zmian ich pogranicza, które skoncentrowało się na wzajemnym dostosowaniu do europejskich standardów.
Borderland is a counterpoint to the set of external and internal forces of human life, which integrate or disintegrate life. For over a thousand years are intertwined fates Czechs and Poles. Too different traditions of these two peoples, other customs aspirations and objectives of these integration processes slow down. After 1989, however, there have been significant changes in the relations between Poles and Czechs, what has become most apparent at the border.

W artykule przedstawiono technologię BIM (ang. Building Information Modeling) na tle historii rozwoju cyfrowych systemów modelowania informacji o budynku, zwracając uwagę na integrację branżową i rolę modelu parametrycznego. Na przykładzie dwóch zrealizowanych obiektów, takich jak Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) w Seulu (2007–2014) projektu Zaha Hadid Architects oraz King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture (ITHRA) w Dhahranie (2006–2017) projektu Snøhetta, objaśniono, jaki wpływ ma strategia opracowywania projektu realizacyjnego w systemach CAD/CAE/CAM na obiektowe modelowanie parametryczne sprzęgnięte z modelowaniem informacji o budynku. Istotne znaczenie mają tu przepływ danych i bezkonfliktowość w procesie wprowadzania zmian w modelach roboczych. Obecnie technologia BIM jest jedną z bardziej obiecujących technologii cyfrowych i wciąż jest udoskonalana na podstawie doświadczeń projektantów i wykonawców.
BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology is presented against the background of the history of development of digital building information modeling systems, paying attention to industry integration and the role of the parametric model. Using the example of two completed objects such as the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul (2007–2014) by Zaha Hadid Architects and the King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture (ITHRA) in Dhahran (2006–2017) by Snøhetta, it is explained how the CAD/CAE/CAM implementation design strategy has an impact on parametric object-based modeling coupled with building information modeling. The data flow and the non-conflicting nature of the process of introducing changes to the working models are important here. Today, BIM technology is one of the most promising digital technologies and is still being improved based on the experience of designers and contractors.

The process of globalization in scientific literature is defined in a very varied way, first of all, because it is a complex, multi-dimensional and multiaspectual process. R. Robertson presents the most general and universal definition of globalization which nowadays has become the reference for formulating different definitions. According to him globalization is a set of processes which make the social world as one. A similar general formulation of this process can be found in A. Giddens’s writings – globalization is an intensification of world-wide social relations. The process of cultural globalization is proceeding before our eyes. We can observe and analyse it in every respect. However, until it lasts, it is hard to foresee what shape will take a predominant current of transformations in the contemporary culture. Today there is domination of the Western culture, particularly the American one. However, economists forecast that even in the first half of the 21st century the economies of China and India will become the world’s largest economies. Then, as it was already in the past, they will influence transformations occurring in culture in a significant way.

In this article, I trace the process through which World War II (WWII) has become the „good war” in American culture. Drawing on a range of books and articles published on the subject —and often written by the war’s veterans—I summarize their findings considering the essentially mythical nature of the conflict’ common memory. The well-known aspects of this myth include the view that WWII was a straightforward struggle between good and evil, that the U.S. soldiers who fought it belonged to “the greatest generation,” and that it was ultimately an expression and activization of American honor, heroism, and gallantry. Further on, I argue that beginning in the 1980s, a resurgence of cultural interest in WWII becomes evident, but now tinged not only with the emerging image of “the good war,” but also with nostalgia—and that the “nostalgization” of the conflict was caused directly by, and indeed possible only because of, the U.S. experience in Vietnam. I trace the multifaceted and multiple references to WWII in Vietnam War narratives—but also to Vietnam in some nostalgic representations of WWII.

For millennia, philosophers have pondered the question, “Who are we?” It becomes a burning question at an age of scientific and technological civilization and a world full of conveniences, mainly because human life is still not comfortable. Adam Hart takes up the challenge of confronting the evolutionary achievements of the Homo species and the environment it has produced, showing that our life—for fundamental reasons—cannot be the realization of idyllic visions.

The aim of the article is to present a phenomenon of the sexualization of an atomic bomb in the popular culture of the 1940s and the 1950s in the United States. On the basis of sociological and cultural studies, the author lists the functions of this phenomenon. Furthermore, he uses the examples of press reports and popular cinema to indicate that the sexualization of the atomic bomb resulted from fear of sterilization and assimilation of soldiers coming back from the front. The analysis concerns the film I Married a Monster from Outer Space (1958). The author proves that science fiction films conceptualize social concerns, and accustom the viewers with atomic tension by means of appropriate narratives.

This paper discusses the results of the research carried out in a project entitled An archaeology of the Death Valley. First, the historical context related to mass killings on the outskirts of Chojnice during the Second World War is sketched. Then, the results of the archaeological field research are presented. The last part is about ethnographic research which allowed to document various memories related to mass killings in the Death Valley as well as human and non-human witnesses of these events. The idea behind this paper is to show that archaeology and ethnography are crucial in discovering and documenting sites of mass killings and their heritage.

Purpose. The purpose is to make a comparative analysis of the most actual Russian and Kazakh proverbs and sayings, used in speech of modern Aktobe citizens. Methods. For realization of the purposes we have interviewed and conducted а questionnaire amongst the Aktobe (schoolboys, teachers, teachers of high schools, students) for revealing of actual proverbs and sayings. By means of proverbs and sayings we see the ethnic particularities of the two folk’s worldview. Also, an expert evaluation has been given, claiming that by means of proverbs and sayings we see the ethnic particularities of the two folk’s world outlook. Results. The analysis of the material has proved that the most significant values in Kazakhs and Russians have been erudition, reading, knowledge, wit, wisdom, science, teaching, reason, and rationality. So, we have studied proverbs connecting with these rhemes in details and tried to reveal ethnic differences of the Kazakhs and Russians. Also, the results of the study have shown, the value orientations are an important component in the system of inheritance of the traditional knowledge in each ethnos representative. The main mass of ethno-cultural information was adopted at early age together with the language formation.

On the basis of a four year long observation at a border crossing point the author will explain the process of institutionalization in specific conditions where social order has been destroyed. The objective of the new law is to restrict the activity of people who use Polish–Belarusian border crossing points and the main purpose of this paper is to show how their behaviors have been influenced by these changes. The behaviors observed during the research explain how a new type of social order can be created, and the author will focus on nine stages which form the process of institutionalization. Expressions such as social action, knowledge, institution and social world are used in a theoretical context. The empirical material gathered during the research is then compared with the discussed theoretical concepts.

During his stay in Australia and Melanesia from 1914 to 1920, the anthropo- logist Bronisław Malinowski frequently experienced dichotomous and contradictory atti- tudes to people, places, and events: the contrast between the ‘civilized’ Australia and the ‘savage’ Melanesia; the background of the Austria-ruled Poland in which he grew up and the British-dominated Australia, Austria’s enemy in the First World War; the emotional tension of simultaneous attraction to two women – Nina Stirling of Adelaide and Elsie Rosaline Masson of Melbourne; the dilemma of the ‘heroic’ versus the ‘unheroic’ related to the war. Most of the dualities of Malinowski’s Australian-Melanesian experience, re- flected in letters to his mother Józefa Malinowska, Elsie R. Masson, and in Diary in the Strict Sense of the Term (1989), were resolved at the end of the period, which became a turning point in his life.

This ar ticle aims at presenting the fate of two brilliant musicians and composers – Alexander Koshitsa (1875–1944) and Sergei Rachmaninov (1873–1943). The author of this article traces historical patterns of the tragedy of these genii who were forced to emigrate, could not return to their homeland but made it famous through their phenomenal talent shown in the world. The article analyzes materials presented in the archives of Alexander and Tatiana Koshitziv in Winnipeg, as well as the latest scientifi c research. The author concludes that Alexander Koshits and his choir had a mission of propagating Ukrainian songs and spiritual music in Europe and the USA.
