In construction practice, contractually agreed costs are often exceeded, which interferes with the sustainable realization of construction projects. The research described in this paper covers 24 new construction, renovation and reconstruction projects in the Republic of Croatia realized in the years 2006 to 2017, in order to analyse the occurrence of cost overruns more precisely with regard to the source of the overruns. It was found that additional work is the main source of cost overruns: firstly, additional work as a result of the client’s change orders and then unforeseen construction work as a result of unforeseen circumstances. As for the additional works, they are carried out at the client’s request and are not necessary for the safety and stability of the building. Using linear regression and “soft computing” methods, the possibility of modelling the relationship between contractually agreed and realized construction costs with satisfactory accuracy was tested. The model with the values of the natural logarithms of the variables, modelled according to the time–cost model of Bromilow, proved to be of the highest accuracy.

The article is devoted to the study of Sterne’s reminiscences in the novel The Letters of a Russian Traveller by Karamzin. They are studied as a globally organized artistic system, linked with the concept of English literature, shaped in Karamzin’s works between 1780 –1790, as well as with the writer’s thoughts on other philosophical and aesthetic problems. «Sterne’s plot» in the novel The Letters of a Russian Traveller by Karamzin develops together with other plots, whose cooperation formed a forward-looking dynamic poetic manner of narration in the book.

W pracy przedstawiono nietypowe rodzaje robót budowlanych. W branży konstrukcyjno-budowlanej opisano: sposób podparcia istniejącej, drewnianej więźby dachowej stalowymi kratownicami w celu wymiany konstrukcji nośnej podpierającej tą więźbę, sposób wzmocnienia filarka (powstałego po wybiciu otworu w ścianie murowanej), sposób zamocowania lamp operacyjnych w przychodni do istniejącego stropu Ackermanna bez obciążania tego stropu. W branży drogowej opisano wykonanie tzw. inteligentnego oznakowania poziomego dróg przy użyciu materiału luminescencyjnego. Przedstawione rozwiązania projektowe zostały już zrealizowane.
This paper presents untypical types of construction works. For civil engineering and construction trade, the article describes: the method of supporting existing wooden roof framework using steel trusses in order to replace the load-bearing structure supporting that framework, the method of reinforcing the pillar (made after a hole in the brick wall have been knocked out), the method of fastening operating lamps in the clinic to an existing Ackermann’s ceiling without straining that ceiling. For road construction trade, the article describes construction of the so-called intelligent horizontal road marking using a luminescent material. The design solutions presented in the paper have already been carried out.

Rozszerzenie BIM o moduł GeoBIM pozwala uwzględnić wpływ podłoża gruntowego oraz robót geotechnicznych na realizację inwestycji budowlanych. W ramach GeoBIM uzyskuje się również możliwość śledzenia i kontroli robót geotechnicznych, a także podejmowania wyprzedzających działań naprawczych. Przedstawiono dwa przykłady zastosowania GeoBIM w praktyce. Pierwszy dotyczy komory startowej TBM tunelu drogowego w Gdańsku, a drugi rozbudowy stacji Victoria w Londynie.
Expansion of BIM by the GeoBIM model makes it possible to take into account the influence of soil subbase as well as geotechnical works for realization of a construction project. Moreover, GeoBIM provides the possibility to follow and control geotechnical works and undertake predictive repair action. The article presents two examples of applying GeoBIM in practice. The first one concerns the launching shaft of a TBM road tunnel in Gdańsk, whereas the second one - expansion of the Victoria station in London.

Przeprowadzony zakres badań i zebrane doświadczenia pokazały, że w rejonach prowadzenia robót strzałowych gdzie obiekty chronione znajdują się względnie blisko źródła drgań, niezbędne jest stosowanie nowoczesnych narzędzi pomiarowych. Łączenie fotogrametrii lotniczej krótkiego zasięgu, GPS, fotogrametrii naziemnej oraz skaningu laserowego po- zwala na uzyskanie dokładnego modelu 3D, z możliwością jego uszczegółowienia w miejscach wrażliwych np. zabioru na całej długości otworu. Umiejętne wykorzystanie dostępnych, nowoczesnych narzędzi pomiarowych prowadzi do uzyskania pożądanego efektu sejsmicznego, przy zachowaniu możliwości technologicznych prowadzenia robót strzałowych.
Buildings are often situated close to the blasting works which are a part of macro-levelling works. The aim of this paper is to describe using the modern measuring devices in macro-levelling design works for the protection inhabitant and buildings against influences of vibrations, flyrock and air blast. It is possible to lower the intensity of impacts by appropriately matched parameters: charges in the blast-hole, length of stemming, blast-hole diameter, burden, spacing between blast-holes and rows, etc. Combine spatial data from different sources: GPS, aerial photogrammetry and laser scanning system results make a convenient, high level of accuracy 3D visualization and digital terrain model on the basis of which it is possible to design safe macro-levelling works.

Do końca sezonu 2012 w Elblągu funkcjonował jeden z największych i najstarszych w Europie basenów. Basen o powierzchni prawie 3,5 hektara powstał w 1934 roku. W 2014 w jego miejscu rozpoczęto budowę nowoczesnego Centrum Rekreacji Wodnej „Dolinka”, które z sukcesem funkcjonuje od września 2015 roku.
In Elbląg, one of the oldest and biggest open swimming pools in Europe was operating until the end of the 2012 season. This swimming pool, covering 3,5 hectares of land, was founded in 1934. In 2014, a new, modern Water Sports Centre “Dolinka” was built in its place, and it has been operating successfully since September 2015.

The Kraków canon priest Hugo Kołłątaj (1750–1812), one of the authors of the Polish Constitution of 3rd May 1791, a writer, philosopher and teacher, the rector of the Jagiellonian University and the Vice-Chancellor of the Polish-Lithuanian Union, endeavoured to escape to Venice via Galicia and Hungary after the defeat of Kościuszko’s uprising. He was, however, captured by the Austrians in Radymno on 6th December 1794 and then imprisoned in Przemyśl. On 19th December of the same year, Kołłątaj was transported to Olomouc, where he was interned as state prisoner no. 4. From 14th February 1795 to 29th June 1798, he was imprisoned in the Josefov fortress and he then returned again to Olomouc. Kołłątaj was forced to remain at the Olomouc Jesuit Barracks until 6th December 1802 and he departed Olomouc on 19th December of the same year. During his internment, he wrote elegiac verse and scientific works dedicated to anthropogeography, history, ethnography and ethics.The memorial plaque to Hugo Kołłątaj, produced according to an artistic design by Marek Mielczarek and placed on the façade of the Czech Army’s Administrative Archive in Olomouc at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland, was unveiled on 20th October 2015 as a permanent reminder of the legacy of this leading Polish enlightenment figure.

This article is a review of the collective monograph Stefan Żeromski. Kim był? Kim jest? edited by Zdzisław Jerzy Adamczyk. The book contains thirty essays written by experts in their respective fields. Both Stefan Żeromski’s views and many aspects of his writings were here thoroughly examined. It is said that Żeromski, one of the most influential Polish writers at the end of the nineteenth and at the beginning of the twentieth century, strongly affected Polish culture. The contributors of the book undoubtedly proved the thesis.

In summary, it should be stated that in the period 1992-2017, dozens of priests with at least a doctoral degree were engaged in scientific and writing work in the entire of Ełk clergy. The work of the Ełk priests concerned mainly issues related to the history of the Church, canon law, philosophy, theology, Catholic social science and patrology. However, it is significant that priests who work on a daily basis in pastoral work can also be proud of the significant achievements in these areas, treating this activity as the implementation of their own research passion and fondness.

Do realizacji zamierzenia budowlanego oprócz projektu budowlanego niezbędne jest określenie wymagań dotyczących materiałów, sposobu realizacji, zasad odbioru itp. Wymagania te podawane są w tzw. specyfikacjach technicznych. Pomocą przy opracowaniu specyfikacji dla określonej inwestycji mogą być publikacje w postaci warunków technicznych wykonania i odbioru. Przykładem takich warunków jest opisana w artykule seria wydawnicza ITB, składająca się z 44 zeszytów WTWiORB.
For the purpose of carrying out a building initiative, aside from the design, it is also imperative to define the requirements referring to the materials, work and handing-off procedures. The aforesaid requirements are contained within so called technical specifications. The specification for the specific investment may be created on the basis of publications taking on a form of technical conditions for execution and handing-off. Such conditions are exemplified by a series of publications issued by the Building Research Institute (ITB), consisting of 44 WTWiORB volumes (Technical Specifications for Execution and Acceptance and Handing-off of The Construction Works).

The titular gas-works are an example of technological monuments which have irreversibly become part of the past. The article discusses works which produced illuminating gas out of hard coal in the process of its degassing in a temperature of 900- 1300° C. The obtained gas, known also as town gas, was used for decades for lighting streets. In time, it was applied also in buildings and for household purposes - for heating water, ironing, heating interiors, etc, as well as in industry. The greatest development of this domain of gas engineering in Poland coincided with the second half of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century. The oldest gas-works, established in 1847, are located in Wroclaw. The first gas-works in Greater Poland were opened in Poznan in 1856. The beginning of the 1970s marked the onset of a thirty-years long liquidation of unprofitable coal gas-works which polluted the natural environment. The development of a network of natural gas transmission lines was accompanied by the closure of successive works. The largest old gas-works complex is located in Poznan. The architecture of the objects, maintained In the so-called Rundbogenstill style, continues to be admired up to this day. Part of the objects, such as the gas holders and the Koppers furnaces, is no longer extant, while other buildings have been adapted for offices and storehouses; still others, such as the boiler-room, the water gas building (now a ruin) or the filter hall await adaptation. A culture centre is foreseen in the old gas-works complex. Some of the old gas-works in Greater Poland are no longer used (Pniewy, Krobia, Miejska Gorka or Rakoniewice). The difficulty with their adaptation lies in the fact that the walls of the production objects are strongly contaminated with toxic substances. Part of the objects is used as construction material warehouses (Pobiedziska, Lobzenica, Srem, Jarocin). In Jutrosin, Wolsztyn, and Nowy Tomysl redesigned gas-works serve as natural gas switching stations. The gas-works in Kornik (today: a switching station) are an example of a well revitalised object with emphasis placed on the beauty and harmony of industrial architecture. Several gas-works have been totally forgotten and pulled down, such as those in Swarzedz, Rawicz, and Chodziez. The state of the preservation of the objects is illustrated by a table. Coal gas-works are an important element of industrial heritage and testimony to the existence of a technology which for economic reasons has been relegated to the past.
