Opis:
In this paper a conceptual framework highlighting possible relationships between employee working memory capacity (WMC) and work engagement is proposed. This conceptual model integrates WMC, effectiveness of work goal attainment and work engagement and consists of five main propositions. (1) WMC is positively related to the effectiveness of work goal attainment, (2) effective work goal attainment stimulates work engagement (3) work engagement is reciprocally related to effective work goal attainment. It is also posited that a positive indirect relationship between WMC and work engagement via goal attainment might be moderated by (4) job pressure and (5) excess WMC. Conceptual model presented here might help to understand the role of cognitive functioning for employees work engagement and spark further debate on this understudied topic.

The paper contains a review of the literature concerning memory abilities and human senses performance under different environmental circumstances. A number of studies indicated that environment has a significant impact on human senses functioning. It can affect it in a mechanical way, by a chronic exposure to potentially harmful substances or processes in different work environments. Also, some cognitive abilities that have evolved to perform evolutionary essential functions lost their importance because of the change of environment impact. Moreover, training can be a source of improvement of both human senses and cognitive abilities, as well. That might suggest that, while using, under different environmental circumstances different cognitive abilities develop. We take into a particular consideration human memory and its role, show current studies in this field and suggest new research directions.

Job Demands–Resources Theory
Opis:
Background The Job Demands–Resources Theory (JD-R) is one of the most influential theoretical frameworks for explaining work engagement. The JD-R postulates the existence of a health impairment process in which job demands lead to strain, and of a motivational process in which job resources lead to work engagement. Although cognitive functions are among the most important characteristics of employees related to job, still little is known about its moderating role in JD-R processes; hence in this study we make a novel attempt to test the invariance of JD-R propositions among employees at different levels of cognitive functioning. Material and Methods A group of 383 multioccupational employees completed a set of questionnaires measuring job resource: co-worker support, supervisor support, performance feedback; job demands: emotional demands, occupational constraints, work-home interferences; Utrecht Work Engagement Scale; Oldenburg Burnout Inventory along with 2 working memory and 3 fluid intelligence tests. Results The multigroup invariance analysis with latent variables revealed that both the health impairment process and the motivational process as postulated by JD-R are invariant across groups of employees with either high or low levels of fluid intelligence and working memory capacity. Conclusions This result provides the first piece of evidence for JD-R robustness among employees at different levels of cognitive functioning. Our findings counterintuitively suggest that employees with high cognitive functioning are not more resistant to job demands than employees with low cognitive functioning and that in order to be work-engaged they need job resources, no less than their colleagues with low cognitive functioning. This article describes a part of a eye-tracking study. Eye tracking is a collection of research methods and techniques used for the measurement and analysis of eyemovement which allow for the analysis of various aspects of human cognitive processes. The aim of the study was to acquire eye tracking parameters related to the memory processes of the subjects duringsolving a task which required the analysis of an illustration. Analysis of the research material gathered during the perception of the same illustration in two different task-solving situations in the article is presented. The results of the study clearly show that during the short amount of time needed for the analysis of two consecutive slides, the brain is capable of storing the image of the analyzed shape in the working memory.

This study examined efficiency of pilots' behavior in condition of visual illusion od false horizon. It has been assumed that visual illusion of false horizon tends to produce spatial disorientation.Efficiency of execution of flight's profile in conditions of spatial disorientation was analyzed in context of FDI. Additionally, efficiency of attention and working memory were analyzed. 29 pilots participated in the experiment (air-raid 1229, 14 hours +/- 844,26; age 32,97; +/- 6,56). Efficiency of execution of flight profile has been defined on simulator YAPETUS based on indicators of course - variability of rate. Styles of perception, efficiency of attentions and efficiency of working memory were researched by means of computer tasks. It appears that false horizon illusion influence the efficiency of pilot's behavior. In conditions of cognitive conflict: visual field - navigational instruments, younger pilots and pilots with FINT style of perception (mobile FD and fixed FI), lower efficiency of selective and divided attention, less resistance to distraction, weak mechanism of inhibition and lower efficiency of updating working memory, were most strongly exposed to disorientation.

Opis:
The question ‘Do psychopathology dimensions correlate with musical preferences in healthy individuals?’ still remains poorly investigated. Additionally, verbal working memory, psychopathology and music preferences have not been examined together. Participants consisted of ninety-three young women without a previous or current psychiatric diagnosis. All participants were examined with the Forward Digit Span Task, and completed a psychopathology symptom instrument along with a musical preferences question. Results revealed that the Global Score Index, Somatization, Hostility and Depression correlated in a statistically significant way with musical preferences in female adults. Hostility and Depression predicted classical music preferences. Depression, Obsessive/Compulsive, Somatization and Hostility predicted a pop preference, while Somatization and Psychoticism predicted a rock preference. No significant correlations were found between the above variables and verbal working memory, except for a significant correlation between age and the span of the working memory. Certain psychopathology dimensions do not influence cognition in the form of the verbal working memory in women, but can predict a specific choice of music genres. Findings suggest that music listening preferences may represent a field of inner experiences that could reveal easy-to-obtain information about the mental health of women who have not an official psychiatric diagnosis, but may be at risk of developing psychological problems due to high self-reported symptoms of psychopathology.

Materiał i metody Opracowano narzędzia do diagnozy czasu reakcji prostej (Abili-time), czasu reakcji z wyborem (Abili-select), przedłużonej koncentracji (Abili-space, Abili-digit) i pamięci roboczej (Abili-langmem, Abili-mathmem). Do oceny trafności zastosowano testy papierowe (CTT, TUS, Powtarzanie cyfr z WAIS-R(PL)) oraz pochodzące z Wiedeńskiego systemu testów (RT, SIGNAL, CORSI, ALS). Wyniki Analiza wykazała, że testy Abili-time i Abili-select charakteryzują się zadowalającą spójnością wewnętrzną. Analiza stabilności czasowej wykazała istotne korelacje test-retest w przypadku Abili-select, Abili-space, Abili-digit i Abili-langmem. Nieco niższą stabilnością czasową cechuje się Abili-time. Nie potwierdzono stabilności czasowej Abili-mathmem. Uzyskano istotne korelacje między wynikami opracowanych narzędzi z miarami mierzącymi podobne konstrukty. Wnioski Przeprowadzone badania potwierdzają trafność i rzetelność Abili-time, Abili-select i Abili-space. Med. Pr. 2023;74(2)
Background Cognitive efficiency is crucial for many areas of human activity. It affects the employees’ efficiency and safety at the workplace. An important element of the prevention of accidents at work is the appropriate professional selection, which consists in checking the characteristics of candidates needed for a given position, and for this purpose, a psychological diagnosis is carried out. The aim of the study was to develop tools for cognitive diagnosis that are characterized by good psychometric properties. Material and Methods Tools for the diagnosis of simple reaction time (Abili-time), choice reaction time (Abili-select), prolonged attention (Abili-space, Abili-digit), and working memory (Abili-langmem, Abili-mathmem) were developed. Validation studies were conducted with 221 individuals aged 20–60 to assess relevance and reliability (internal consistency and temporal stability), and with the participation of 61 in a retest 3 months after the first measurement. Paper tests (CTT, TUS, Digit Span from WAIS-R(PL)) and tests from the Vienna test system (RT, SIGNAL, CORSI, ALS) were used to assess validity. Results The analysis showed that the Abili-time and Abili-select tests have satisfactory internal consistency. Analysis of temporal stability showed significant test-retest correlations for Abili-select, Abili-space, Abili-digit and Abili-langmem. Abili-time had slightly lower temporal stability. The temporal stability of Abili-mathmem was not confirmed. Significant correlations were obtained between the results of the developed tools with measures measuring similar constructs. Conclusions The conducted research confirms the validity and reliability of Abili-time, Abili-select and Abili-space. Further work is needed on working memory tests, which are noteworthy due to the lack of other tools available on the market to test these functions. Further research should involve more people as well as carrying out standardization work. Med Pr. 2023;74(2)

The aim of this study was to check whether an online n-back task conducted in the uncontrolled environment of the Internet can yield valid and reliable data. For this purpose, 169 participants completed an online n-back task with n1, n2 and n3 blocks on their home computers. The results have shown acceptable reliability for overall accuracy and reaction time indices across n1, n2, n3 blocks, as well as for reaction time indices for each n block. Unacceptable reliability has been found for separate n levels accuracy indices and for response bias indices. Confirmatory factor analysis has revealed that, among 8 proposed measurement models, the best fit for the data collected is a model with two uncorrelated factors: accuracy consisting of n1, n2, n3 indices and reaction time consisting of n2, n3 indices. The results of this study have demonstrated for the first time that a reliable administration of online n-back task is possible and may therefore give rise to new opportunities for working memory research.

Starting from the assumption that working memory capacity is an important predictor of general fluid intelligence, we asked which aspects of working memory account for this relationship. Two theoretical stances are discussed. The first one posits that the important explanatory factor is storage capacity, roughly defined as the number of chunks possible to hold in the focus of attention. The second one claims that intelligence is explained by the efficiency of executive control, for instance, by prepotent response inhibition. We investigated 96 children at the age between 10 and 13. They completed a version of the n-back task that allows assessment of both storage capacity and inhibitory control. They also completed Raven’s Progressive Matrices as the fluid intelligence test and the Test for Creative Thinking - Drawing Production, for control purposes. We found that Raven’s scores correlated negatively with the number of unnecessary responses to irrelevant stimuli but they did not correlate with the number of signal detections. We conclude that children’s fluid intelligence depends on inhibitory control, with no relationship with storage capacity.

Opis:
The aim of the present empirical study was to test whether the working memory capacity of interpreting and translation students differs, in order to shed light on the role of working memory capacity in interpreter education. Six interpreting students and five translation students, all pursuing a master’s degree at Innsbruck University, were tested on working memory capacity tasks: speaking span, counting span, listening span, and subtract 2 span. The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test showed that the results of the speaking span (p = 0,0246) and subtract 2 span (p = 0,013) are statistically significant. In both these tests, the interpreting students outperformed the translation students significantly. Moreover, a correlation analysis was conducted to determine whether more advanced students showed a higher memory span, which was the case in both tests. The results of this study suggest that interpreting students develop a higher working memory span throughout their master’s degree, which gives reason to believe that working memory capacity training as early as in the bachelor’s degree could lead to a reduced cognitive load when the students start their interpreter education. These findings are, however, based on a small sample (n = 11), as a reason of which, they should be viewed with caution. Depending on its stage, stress influences cognitive functions. Indeed, several authors have ensured the degradation of cognitive functions by stress. Others did not find any association between the two. A third group of authors claimed that stress improves the performance of certain cognitive functions. Faced with this inconsistency of results, we conducted this study with the aim of finding out whether job stress alters or stimulates cognitive functions. Our study focused on 102 workers who were asked to freely and anonymously complete a questionnaire deemed relevant at the international scale. The age of the participants is between 22 and 60 years old with an average of 37 years and a standard deviation of 11 years. The population is made up of 77% of men and 23% of women. For the school level of the subjects: 50% of the subjects have a level bac to bac+2, 30% have a level higher than bac+2 and 20% have a level lower than bac. The professional status of workers is divided into three types: 48% are supervisors and technicians, 32% are executing workers and 20% are senior managers. The participants underwent two neurocognitive tests using the ELIAN software. Analysis of the results shows that there is no significant link between work stress and the cognitive functions studied. However, the analysis of the results of each socio-professional category separately shows that stress significantly reduces the visual working memory score of young people (< 40 years old), as well as the ability to concentrate of subjects with a school level higher than bac+2. While it improves visual perception in men and old people over the age of 40. There are significant links between some cognitive performances and the socio-professional characteristics of the stressed subjects. Therefore, work stress can affect neurocognitive health, which is more serious. In order to understand the relationship between work or chronic stress and cognition as well as their moderating factors, it is advisable to increase the size of the sample and to diversify the cognitive functions studied as well as their tasks.

This article attempts to find the answer for two questions. Is memory training reasonable and effective? And how to work with seniors in classes involving cognitive stimulation activities? Empirical part that involved the study with 99 participants (experimental group underwent memory training) answers the first question. The results indicate moderate effectiveness of cognitive stimulation but it can also act as a buffer against deterioration of memory functioning. Methodological part which answers the second question, refers to three aspects: profile of a senior, role of the educator and good practices of running such trainings.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is likely to have long-term mental health effects on individuals who have recovered from COVID-19. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 can see a range of long-term side effects. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of neurotherapy (EEG neurofeedback and goal-oriented cognitive training) in the treatment of neurocognitive dysfunctions in a patient after the infection of SARS-CoV-2 and the long long-term side effects after the contraction of COVID-19. The 48-year-old woman ZR, an accountant by profession, an employee of the administration of the Municipal Board of Municipal Resources, fell ill on October 13, 2020. The disease began with very severe burning headache, eyeballs pain, muscle aches. Ten days later more symptoms joined: loss of smell (anosmia) and loss of taste (ageusia), hearing disorders, shortness of breath and chest pains. The symptoms were associated with SARS-CoV-2 coron- avirus infection confirmed by an rt-PCR genetic test. Brain MRI with intravenous paramagnetic contrast medium injection did not show either lesions of acute microischemic significance or areas of pathological enhancement after paramagnetic contrast medium ad- ministration. The patient was treated at home. In mid-November 2020, about a month after the infection of SARS-CoV-2 and con- tracting NeuroCOVID-19, neurocognitive impairment developed and after half a year she was deteriorating and not able to live in- dependently in society because of her condition. She called her problem "brain fog", and was referred for further diagnosis and therapy to the Reintegration and Training Center of the Polish Neuropsychological Society. We diagnosed a range of long-term side effects and introduced neurotherapy (EEG neurofeedback and goal-oriented cognitive training) in the treatment of neurocognitive dysfunctions. It was found that almost all the long-term side effects were reduced in magnitude. The patient improved and she was able to return to work. EEG neurofeedback and goal-oriented cognitive training might be helpful in the reduction of neurocognitive dysfunctions in patients following the infection of SARS-CoV-2 and long-term side effects after the contraction of COVID-19.

Opis:
Stroke is a sudden-onset neurological deficit resulting from focal vascular lesions. This is either due to a clot-induced obstruction of a vessel (ischemic stroke) or a rupture of a vessel causing haemorrhage (hemorrhagic stroke). The appropriate diagnosis of brain stroke aphasic patients is a major public health problem one so important for effective rehabilitation. Here an important role is played by the diagnosis of impaired cognitive processes. The aim of the research was to find the index of impaired cognitive control with the use of ERPs in a patient following an ischemic stroke with aphasia. A male patient, aged 69, after an ischemic brain stroke experienced 4 months previously with resulting naming problem, was admitted to the Reintegrative and Teaching Center of the Polish Neuropsychological Society. In the neuropsychological evaluation three neuropsychological tests were employed: (a) the Boston Naming Test-Polish version, to evaluate the naming and word finding problem; (b) the nonverbal Bell test to ascertain a selective, visuospatial and strategic attentional evaluation; (c) the Digit Memory test to evaluate working memory capabilities; (d) ERPs as a neurophysiological index of impaired cognitive control. Significant changes were observed in testing. All cognitive functions including naming, nonverbal, visuospatial and strategic attention, along with the digit memory deviate substantially from the norm. The patient obtained a lo wer score, compared to the norm (p <0.05). Boston Naming Test (patient = 21< Mean-Norm = 57.29; SD= 0.52). Bell test (patient = 23 < Mean-Norm = 31.29; SD= 2.52). Digit Memory Test scores: Forward digit span (patient = 3 < Mean-Norm = 7.65, SD = 0.49). Backward digit span (patient = 2

Opis:
Nowadays, amphetamines constitute the prescription drugs most commonly abused by adolescents and young adults (Berman, O’Neill, Fears et al. 2008). The prevalence of problematic (mainly illegal) use of amphetamines as a stimulant by college students, and here especially before serious examinations, has also been rising. This fact represents a serious public health concern. The patient, aged 19, was awakened from from a long-term coma that had lasted 21 days following an amphetamine overdose and manifested tetraparesis, cortical blindness and deficits in cognitive and emotional processes. After a year of rehabilitation the majority of symptoms had disappeared, but cortical blindness andworking memory deficits remained. In addition, frontal lobe syndrome symptoms appeared. After two years of therapy as a result of immense tiredness caused by all an night wedding reception she started to manifest Charles-Bonnet syndrome. She experienced strange visual sensations such as visual hallucinations and saw various non-existing shapes (coloured blots, patterns and fireworks of vivid colours). She also saw objects (often terrifying) as well as animals (mainly African) and people with deformed faces and long teeth, and persons in African dress with feathers and coral beads in their hair. Her real identity was not remembered by the patient for longer than 2 hours and even then she insisted on being referred to as Shakira. She was given a qEEG examination (in open and closed eyes conditions) and ERPs with the use of auditory stimuli at the period when the hallucinations (to a small degree) still occurred. Studies conducted into the functional neuroimaging of the brain work in milliseconds in the examined patient can explain her symptoms. A comparison of the subject’s ERPs with the grand average of ERPs in healthy controls shows that the N170 and N 250 components are impaired in the subject: the occipital-temporal area of the subject brain shows a strong positivity instead of negativities. This positivity might reflect an enhanced reactivity of neurons in the corresponding area induced by the removal of lateral inhibition from the neurons as a result of local damage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
