Opis:
Network science is an emerging discipline drawing from sociology, computer science, physics and a number of other fields to examine complex systems in economical, biological, social, and technological domains. To examine these complex systems, nodes are used to represent individual entities, and links are used to represent relationships between entities, forming a web-like structure, or network, of the entire system. The structure that emerges in these complex networks influences the dynamics of that system. We provide a short review of how this mathematical approach has been used to examine the structure found in the phonological lexicon, and of how subsequent psycholinguistic investigations demonstrate that several of the structural characteristics of the phonological network influence various language-related processes, including word retrieval during the recognition and production of spoken words, recovery from instances of failed lexical retrieval, and the acquisition of word-forms. This approach allows researchers to examine the lexicon at the micro-, meso-, and macro-levels, holding much promise for increasing our understanding of language-related processes and representations.

Opis:
Artificial neural networks consist of many simple elements capable of processing data. These are tools inspired by the construction of the human brain, used in machine learning. The aim of the research was to analyze the occuracy of the created neural network in the process of handwriting recognition. The article presents the results obtained during the learning and testing of a convolution network with a different number of hidden layers. Each time learning and testing the network was carried out using the same set of images (taken from the publicly available IAM database) depicting handwritten words in English.
Sztuczne sieci neuronowe składają się z wielu prostych elementów zdolnych do przetwarzania danych. To narzędzia inspirowane budową ludzkiego mózgu, stosowane w uczeniu maszynowym. Celem badań była analiza dokładności odpowiedzi stworzonej sieci neuronowej w procesie rozpoznawania pisma odręcznego. W artykule przedstawiono wy-niki uzyskane podczas nauki i testowania sieci konwolucyjnej o różnej liczbie warstw ukrytych. Każdorazowo uczenie i testowanie sieci realizowane było za pomocą tego samego zbioru obrazów (zaczerpniętych z ogólnodostępnej bazy IAM Handrwiting Database) przedstawiających słowa pisane odręcznie w języku angielskim.

Opis:
Mosques are Islamic places of worship where speech and music rituals are performed. Since two different languages are spoken there, mosques are described as bilingual spaces. Among studies on the complex acoustic structure of mosques there are only few studies on speech intelligibility and none on the bilingual characteristics of the mosque. Therefore, a comprehensive study has been carried out to evaluate the acoustic comfort of the contemporary Turkish mosques (CTM) over speech intelligibility of Turkish and Arabic languages. In the study the CTM model providing optimum acoustic conditions recommended in the literature is examined on speech intelligibility by applying acoustic simulation and auralisation techniques, as well as word recognition tests. As a result, the acoustic condition in the model is found insufficient in terms of speech intelligibility of both languages. Also, with the decrease of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), the Turkish intelligibility ratio is observed to decrease at least two times faster than the Arabic ones. This study is viewed as an outline for researchers to further study mosque acoustics in terms of speech intelligibility, and thus support the standardisation process of the acoustic comfort criteria for the mosques.

Opis:
This theoretical article presents a case for a new approach to the teaching of word recognition in English as a foreign language to young learners in Polish early years education, arguing that there is a need for greater attention to explicit instruction in alphabetic principles, selected phonics and decoding skills. Research in first language (L1) English and foreign language (L2) development of word recognition skills is outlined. Differences between the orthographies of Polish and English are highlighted. Approaches used in L1 early reading instruction are contrasted with those commonly applied in L2 settings. The need for more explicit instruction is rationalized on the basis of a brief description of impressions from 20 hours of classroom observation. The second part of the paper presents some principles for the design of materials to introduce alphabetic principles of English and elements of phonics to support word recognition, with examples. The ability to recognize words rapidly and with ease is a key skill, which, unless mastered early, could potentially have a negative impact on the whole of a child’s language education.

Opis:
The handwritten text recognition problem is widely studied by the researchers of computer vision community due to its scope of improvement and applicability to daily lives. It is a sub-domain of pattern recognition. Due to advancement of computational power of computers since last few decades neural networks based systems heavily contributed towards providing the state-of-the-art handwritten text recognizers. In the same direction, we have taken two state-of-the art neural networks systems and merged the attention mechanism with it. The attention technique has been widely used in the domain of neural machine translations and automatic speech recognition and now is being implemented in text recognition domain. In this study, we are able to achieve 4.15% character error rate and 9.72% word error rate on IAM dataset, 7.07% character error rate and 16.14% word error rate on GW dataset after merging the attention and word beam search decoder with existing Flor et al. architecture. To analyse further, we have also used system similar to Shi et al. neural network system with greedy decoder and observed 23.27% improvement in character error rate from the base model.

Opis:
A major problem in isolated-word speech recognition systems is detection of the beginning and ending boundaries of the word. It is an essential of speech recognition algorithms, where signal speech segments should be reliably separated. During speech recognition background noise is also recorded, hence the word isolation is difficult. The parametric representation of the speech must provide enough information to characterize the words and to differentiate between acoustically similar words. In this paper the method of words extraction from human speech will be considered.
