Opis:
This study considers the acquisition of epistemic modal auxiliaries (EMA) in typically developing (TD) and autistic children and the role that Theory of Mind (ToM) plays in this development. Nineteen Dutch-speaking TD children and ten autistic children received tasks assessing ToM, general linguistic ability and EMA comprehension. Results suggest that both groups have some understanding of the Dutch EMA system, but no significant differences were found between groups. However, once participants were divided into ToM passers and ToM failers irrespective of clinical diagnosis, results showed that passers performed significantly better than failers on EMA understanding. Having a good understanding of others’ mental states, as evidenced by full marks on ToM tasks, thus seems important in the acquisition of EMA.

The aim of this article is to describe the issue of effective vocabulary learning among the students of neophilological faculties as well as to provide an answer to the question on how to learn vocabulary effectively. To achieve this aim, two vocabulary learning strategies (the key-word method and learning by heart) were compared on the basis of empirical research. Moreover, the vocabulary learning style of the informants was described, the conclusions were drawn and recommendations given.

Opis:
Word Sense Disambiguation in text remains a difficult problem as the best supervised methods require laborious and costly manual preparation of training data. On the other hand, the unsupervised methods yield significantly lower precision and produce results that are not satisfying for many applications. Recently, an algorithm based on weakly-supervised learning for WSD called Lexicographer-Controlled Semi-automatic Sense Disambiguation (LexCSD) was proposed. The method is based on clustering of text snippets including words in focus. For each cluster we find a core, which is labelled with a word sense by a human, and is used to produce a classifier. Classifiers, constructed for each word separately, are applied to text. The goal of this work is to evaluate LexCSD trained on large volume of untagged text. A comparison showed that the approach is better than most frequent sense baseline in most cases.

Opis:
The handwritten text recognition problem is widely studied by the researchers of computer vision community due to its scope of improvement and applicability to daily lives. It is a sub-domain of pattern recognition. Due to advancement of computational power of computers since last few decades neural networks based systems heavily contributed towards providing the state-of-the-art handwritten text recognizers. In the same direction, we have taken two state-of-the art neural networks systems and merged the attention mechanism with it. The attention technique has been widely used in the domain of neural machine translations and automatic speech recognition and now is being implemented in text recognition domain. In this study, we are able to achieve 4.15% character error rate and 9.72% word error rate on IAM dataset, 7.07% character error rate and 16.14% word error rate on GW dataset after merging the attention and word beam search decoder with existing Flor et al. architecture. To analyse further, we have also used system similar to Shi et al. neural network system with greedy decoder and observed 23.27% improvement in character error rate from the base model.

The importance of prosodic constituent in teaching pronunciation of French as a foreign language : access to meaning in speech Learning a foreign language means being in contact with a new environment of sounds compared to that of the mother tongue. The foreign language teacher must help learners to access these sounds both from a perception and a production point of view. The verbo-tonal method of phonetic correction designed in the 1960s-1970s by Professor Petar Guberina (University of Zagreb) provides teachers with tools to correct learners’ pronunciation. The aim of this article is to present some of the advantages of the VTM for phonetic correction, in particular with regard to prosody by showing how important this is for effective communication. This comes in response to difficulties noted by Polish-speaking beginners in French as a foreign language, in particular those concerning the rhythmic unit and the accentuation of rhythmic groups, which we will call « phonetic words ».

The paper has two main objectives: the first is to present an overview of the phenomenon of multi-word items in English, and discuss their prevalence in native speaker usage. The second is to discuss how proficient non-native speakers of English, and in particular those who are training to become translators, may benefit from classroom training that increases awareness of the primary role of chunks and other multiword units in native-like speech. It is argued that classroom training may tend to emphasise grammar rules and lexis over building a repertoire of multi-word items; more practise in this area may improve fluency, conserve energy, and enhance long-term language learning among adult foreign language users with nuanced foreign language performance goals.

Opis:
In this paper, the author tries to deliver exercises for Polish students of German language with Danish as other foreign language. On the basis of the common German-Danish word-formation-patterns, the author attempts to build a new Danish-learning-model, based on these common patterns, the parallelism of which stays on the level of ca. 60-95%, allowing so a more often German-Danish transfer. Using these and other similarities between the two languages a student of Danish with German as source language can from the very beginning learn Danish in a more effective way.

Opis:
Przeliczono też liczbę znaków we wszystkich próbkach i ujęto ją za pomocą PW, porównując długość tekstu wyrażoną słowami faktycznymi i przeciętnymi. Zastosowane procedury statystyczne umożliwiły odrzucenie hipotezy zerowej o braku różnicy między użyciem wyrazów konkretnych, a PW jako miary długości tekstu. W podsumowaniu przedstawiono możliwe zastosowania tego modelu dla celów (glotto)dydaktycznych.
Considering the fact that words vary in length within a language and between different languages the author has conducted the research, inspired by Carver’s model of a standard-length word, to answer the question: What is the average length of a Polish word? To achieve that goal, ninety samples, a 1000-words-long each, drawn from the National Corpora of Polish Language have been examined. The texts belonged to different genres and had different publication channel. The average length of a Polish word was established to be 6 characters. Using that value, the number of average words (AV) has been calculated for each analyzed sample. The number of actual words has been juxtaposed with the number of AV. The procedure made possible to reject the null hypothesis and validate the new unit of text measurement. In the last part of the article a number of possible uses of the new concept have been enumerated.

In the paper the concept of a training system is presented which can help to stimulate sensory-motor cortex centers in order to develop their ability for efficient use of bioprosthesis. The basis of the training system is a virtual reality with a virtual hand, that the trained patient can move and concurrently observe the movement on the screen (visual feedback) and whose contact with virtual objects the patient may feel as a touch (sensory feedback). The construction of the virtual hand consists of physical elements, connected by joints, a graphical object representing the structure of the hand and the bones enable its deformation. The control procedure of virtual hand is realized through recognition of intention of hand motion on the basis of EMG signals coming from the stump muscles. The recognition algorithm is constructed using the learning set, i.e the set of pairs containing the class of hand fingers movement and accompanying myopotentials segments, which are acquired from the muscles of healthy hand.

This paper describes our new deep learning system based on a comparison between GRU and CNN. Initially we start with the first system which uses Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) which we will compare with the second system which uses Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). And through this comparison we propose a new system based on the positive points of the two previous systems. Therefore, this new system will take the right choice of hyper-parameters recommended by the authors of both systems. At the final stage we propose a method to apply this new system to the dataset of different languages (used especially in socials networks).
