Nitrate assimilation in the plant cell is mainly regulated by the enzyme nitrate reductase (EC 1.6.6.1), which catalyzes the nitrate to nitrite reduction. Nitrate reductase activity (NRA) is measured at the major nitrate reduction site, which can be the root or shoot, depending on the species. The in vivo assay has often been used for NRA measurement, and protocol also usually varies with the species. The goals of this study were: (1) to identify the major nitrate reduction site in seedlings of two tree species, Eucalyptus urophylla and Khaya senegalensis, and (2) to optimize the in vivo nitrate reductase assay at the major nitrate reduction site in these species. Healthy seedlings aged 180 and 160 days, respectively, were selected for NRA measurement in fully expanded leaves and main root. After identifying the main nitrate reduction site of each species, the effects of variations in temperature, nitrate concentration and pH in the incubation medium were assessed. The results showed that the leaf and the root are the major nitrate reduction site of Eucalyptus urophylla and Khaya senegalensis, respectively. The optimal conditions for the in vivo assay in the leaf were 35 °C, $KNO_3$ 100 mM, and pH 7.0, whereas for the root they were 30 °C, $KNO_3$ 100 mM, and pH 7.5.

Bolesław Suszka arrived in Kórnik in 1951 with his newly wedded wife Janina straight from Kraków where they graduated from the Jagiellon University, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. Dr. Stefan Białobok (later professor), director of the Institute of Dendrology and Pomology, employed them both, assigning Bolesław to dendrology and his wife Janina to pomology. The institute was in the process of expansion planning a new building. During World War II Bolesław worked as a carpenter with a building team, so he acquired some knowledge about building. He was asked therefore to keep an eye on the building process to assure conformity with plans and solidity of performance. Being born in Silesia, Bolesław took this responsibility very seriously and molested the builders all along. Truly a very solid building was produced, which continues to serve us well to this day. Prof. Białobok supported Bolesław in his interest in woody plant seeds. He agreed to the establishment of a seed laboratory within the complex of the new building under construction. To acquaint himself with forest seed problems Bolesław was sent for 1 month to the Forest Research Institute in Warsaw to do some work under prof. Stanisław Tyszkiewicz, the renowned specialist on seed problems, involved in the topic within the framework of the International Union of Forest Research Organisations since the thirties. Bolesław considers himself a disciple of Tyszkiewicz. Seeing the work done in Warsaw and having acquainted himself with the needs of forest seed science, he requested that within the new building a phytotron be constructed so as to be able to maintain seed in various conditions of controlled temperature and light. This was introduced into the plans for the new building. The phytotron and the seed laboratory became his main concern for the next half century. He devoted his professional life to the study of woody plant seeds, particularly their storage and pre-sowing treatment requirements. He had the good fortune to co-operate in this field with leading world specialists from various countries, "his masters" as he refers to them and about whom he will speak in a moment. His achievements include identification for many species of the most appropriate methods of seed handling so as to 1) shorten the germination period, 2) increase germinative capacity, 3) obtain germination in the best time for it from the nurseryman's point of view, 4) shorten seedling emergence time in the nursery, 5) eliminate secondary dormancy, 6) prolong storage potential, 7) reduce demand for stratification and storage space. Numerous papers and books document these achievements. One of his books was translated into several languages. He observed that seed lots of some species come to storage facilities with various degrees of after-ripening and therefore in various stages of readiness for germination. The first need therefore is to bring them to an equalised condition. In this context warm stratification proved useful. It was his first major achievement to extend application of a warm period of stratification, prior to the normally used cold stratification, as a useful treatment for several species. It completes the maturation of the seeds, brings them to a common physiological state with the resultant equalisation of the time needed for cold stratification, and can also be used to suspend the stratification process and bring the seeds back into a state of full dormancy. Experience with the effect of the warm phase led him to the realisation that seeds are adapted to the natural conditions in which they have to germinate, immediately or next spring and that some even have a potential to extend germination capacity over several seasons through inductions of secondary dormancy, this latter potential being an adaptation to the fact that for some species abundant seed crops can be rare. All these natural adaptations when recognised can be effectively used when handling seeds. He developed technologies for identifying the stratification needs for various seed lots, technologies for the after-ripening of seed without a stratification medium, technologies for reducing seed moisture content to a level permitting long storage with minimal mortality, technologies for simultaneous seedling emergence under nursery conditions and many others. His expertise covers a wide range of species with both orthodox and recalcitrant seed. On the basis of his technologies special facilities were developed in the Polish State Forests. Bolesław Suszka became the world's internationally recognised leading specialist on woody plant seed, particularly on recalcitrant seed. He acted and still acts as a consultant for the construction of various seed storage facilities, co-operated in many research projects, participated in the work of many international organisations dealing with seeds, such as IUFRO and ISTA, and is involved in teaching seed science in graduate and postgraduate courses. Bolesław Suszka is a family man. He has 4 children and 11 grand children. A devout Christian, he works in the field of promoting natural family planning. He was drawn into the topic of family education by Fr. Karol Wojtyła, when attending with his future wife Janina a marriage preparation course run by the future Pope for Kraków students. Bolesław is an activists of the pro-life movement and a professional consultant in family problems. He authored several books with Fr. Karol Meissner OSB on the topic of preparing young people for family life. He has several hobbies, too. He is an amateur coin collector, a student of fortifications, an avid reader of history books and has a very keen interest in current political affairs.

Trees are long living organisms, rarely used in molecular experiments because of large size of the genome and long time of reproduction cycle. Sequencing data from Populus trichocarpa genome allowed for the development of research on the processes associated with tree biology such as secondary wood formation, long-term perennial growth, seasonal changes, biotic interactions, evolution etc. Reference data enable the investigation of non-model trees such as Quercus or Fagus, having ecological and economic significance. During projects scientists use genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic approaches which contribute to better understanding of the physiological processes regulating tree biology. Data collected from these multiple studies need to be integrated. The integration of data is the subject of the newly established field of science called systems biology. This review presents progress in tree research after finishing the sequencing project of Populus. It concentrates on modern trends in 'omics' and systems biology study of temperate broadleave trees during the last 10 years of studies.

Rubus maximus Marsson, regional bramble species occurring mainly in the Baltic costal area of the NE Germany, was reported from Świnoujście in XIX century. Its occurrence in Poland was confirmed by the new locality only recently found in the Wolin Island.

An invasive East Asian rust fungus Melampsoridium hiratsukanum, obligate biotroph belonging to Pucciniastraceae, Pucciniales (Basidiomycota) is found widely spread on leaves of Alnus incana in eastern, central and southern parts of Lithuania. On Alnus glutinosa this fungus is rare, sometimes occurring with an alder leaf pest, a microscopic eriophyid gall mite Acalitus brevitarsus. Information on the distribution patterns, ecological and morphological characters of this neomycete is given.

In order to survive periods of adverse cold climatic conditions, plant requirements are satisfi ed by means of physiological adaptations to prevent cells from freezing. Thus, the growth of woody plants in temperate regions slows down and they enter into a physiological state called dormancy. In order to identify the chilling and heat requirements to overcome the dormancy period of Cupressaceae pollen type in the south of Europe, we have carried out our study with aerobiological data from a 10-year (1996- 2005) period in Ponferrada, León (Spain). For the chilling requirements the best result was with a threshold temperature of 7.1ºC and an average of 927 CH. Calculation of heat requirements was carried out with maximum temperature, with 490 growth degree days (GDD) needed, with a threshold temperature of 0ºC. We have used the 2002-2003, 2003- 2004 and 2004-2005 periods in order to determine the real validity of the model. We have not used these years in developing the models. The dates predicted differ in only a few days from those observed: in 2002-2003 there was a difference of 11 days, in 2003-2004 predicted and observed dates were the same, but in 2004-2005 the difference obtained was of 43 days.

Opis:
Changes in activity of the grain aphid peroxidase (Px) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) towards phenolics isolated from leaves of black currant, sour cherry and walnut were examined. Slight increase in activity of peroxidase was found within insect tissues after 24 h of walnut extract treatment, whereas black currant and sour cherry strongly inhibited activity of this enzyme. Later on, the walnut extract reduced activity of the enzyme, finally about 30%. The other extracts showed slight changes in Px activity. The grain aphid’s polyphenol oxidase was stimulated during the first 24 h of the experiment. Further treatment with the phenolics extracts reduced activity of the grain aphid polyphenol oxidase. Generally, phenolics isolated from the black currant and sour cherry were more effective in reducing activity of the aphid peroxidase, whereas phenolics from walnut reduced the polyphenol oxidase activity. Possible application of the phenolics isolated from the woody plants as modern biopesticides towards the grain aphid is discussed.

In the rural areas 90% of the Ugandans use plants for their medicinal uses. Communities around Mabira Central Forest Reserve (CFR) harvest plants for medicinal purposes. The increased uptake of herbal medicine is a threat to the abundance and health of medicinal trees. This research determined the species population structure and regeneration status of most abundant woody medicinal plant species in Mabira CFR. Sixty nested plots measuring 20×10 m were established adjacent to transects, 20 plots per management zone. The species sampled were identified, counted, and their diameter at breast height (dbh) taken. Their density was computed. Using the dbh classes and density data, dbh distributions were established. Using Kruskal- Wallis test we ascertained if significant differences existed in medicinal plant species densities for size classes in the 3 zones. Using linear regression we got relationship between plant density and dbh. A regression analysis of In (Ni+1) against di was made to cater for the zero values of abundance per hectare. The population had a steep negative slope, meaning that it is stable and naturally replacing itself. There was a general decline in species density with dbh. The <5 dbh size class had the biggest number of individuals per hectare in the production zone. The production zone had a high regeneration potential due to most individuals being in the smallest size class. Density had a negative linear relationship with dbh. There was a significant relationship between dbh and density of species. The tree species sampled were generally naturally regenerating.

Opis:
Seasonal changes in the levels of water-soluble carbohydrates, free proline and tolerance to freezing and water deficit were studied in leaves of cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) and ivy (Hedera helix). Frost and water deficit tolerance was estimated based on the measurement of electrical conductivity of aqueous media containing leaf discs that were previously treated with frost (–7°C) or polyethylene glycol solution (PEG 600), respectively. Carbohydrate content in leaves of examined species changed differently throughout the measurement period. In laurel leaves the highest carbohydrate level was found in February, while it was lowest in June. In contrast, in ivy leaves the highest carbohydrate content was recorded during summer (June, July), while the lowest in February. However, a lack of correlation between soluble carbohydrate level and membrane injury index was shown in this study. Free proline content in leaves of investigated species was the highest in early spring, i.e. April. The lowest level of free proline in laurel leaves was found in July, September and October, but in ivy from July to February. A negative correlation between proline content and membrane injury index observed in frost and PEG treated leaves of both species suggest that this amino acid may have resulted on membrane protection.

Mostly parks and forest are the most important ‘green islands’ in urban ecological network. Urban forests are belong to green areas and collected many plant species. The main aim of the article was characteristic of ancient plant species in urban forests in Tarnów. The field studies were carried out in years 2011–2012. It covered 80 phytosociological records on the area 500 m2 in herb layer of urban forests and in forest nature on oak-hornbeam. The results showed that many ancient plant species were growing in urban forest but less than in nature reserves.
