Opis:
The aim of the presented research was to characterize the driving related to the deliveries of large−size Scots pine wood and to determine the factors affecting its structure and distance. Operation was divided in to: driving for load on a public and forest road, forest ride between loading points, as well as driving with saw logs on a forest and public road. Data on the distance traveled on forest and public roads (empty and with load), as well as, the number of loading places was determined on the data from drivers. In total, 1509 randomly selected deliveries carried out over a period of twelve months from 40 forest districts were analyzed. Investigated transports delivered 44,336 m3 of large−size pine round wood to the sawmill. Most deliveries were made within 100 km from the plant. Within this radius, 83.87% of drives for load and 75.35% drives with load were completed. The average distance for driving for load on a public road was 60.6 km, with the range from 0.5 to 205 km. The average driving distance with load to the sawmill was 70 km, the shortest distance 2 km and the longest – 238 km. Driving distances on forest roads, for and with load, was on the similar level of 3.5 and 3.4 km, respectively. The average distance in the forest, between loading points was 3.1 km, with SD=2.9 km, maximum 16 km. The largest share, 51.4% of total delivery distance, was related to driving with saw logs on a public road and depends on how many places in the forest the wood was picked up. In 36% of all deliveries, saw logs were loaded from two or more places, which involved additional drive on forest roads at the distance of 1,652 km. The analysis did not show statistically significant differences between driving depending on the season of the year. The stable wood supply during 12 months period, shows that large stocks of round wood to secure productions during sensitive periods (winter), is not needed.

Opis:
The efficiency of wood transport depends not only on the maximum load capacity, but also on the duration of individual transport operations. The purpose of the presented research is to analyze the duration of transport stages of Scots pine large−size wood (saw logs) and indicate the factors that affect the structure of the duration of the entire operation. The operation was divided in to truck driving for a load on a public and forest road, driving between loading points in the forest including timber loading, driving with saw logs on a forest and public road, waiting for entry to the sawmill as well as verification and unloading of wood in the sawmill. Data on the duration of each operation was determined on the basis of information obtained from the course information cards. The waiting time for entering the sawmill as well as wood checking and unloading was based on data from wood reception in sawmill. 1514 randomly selected transports in a period of twelve months from 40 forest districts were analyzed. The average time of empty drive for a load by public road was 1:03 [hh:mm], with the range from 0:01 to 7:30. Driving time with a load to the sawmill was an average of 1:23, with the span from 0:05 to the 5:30. Driving on forest roads for load and with load is at a similar level of 11−12 minutes. The average time of loading wood in the forest was 39 minutes, with a minimum of 10 minutes, and maximum of 3 hours. Most trucks entered the plant immediately, nevertheless the average waiting time was 38 minutes, and the majority (75%) of transports need to wait up to one hour. Volume and quality checking, as well as unloading in the plant, took 42 minutes on average. The shortest delivery lasted 1:00 and the longest 17:37. The average transport duration of wood to the sawmill was 4:51. The number of places for loading wood in the forest has significant impact on the duration of collecting the load, and thus also on the time of the entire delivery. The largest fraction in the total duration of transport is associated with traveling on public roads. 27.1 and 28.8% is the time of loaded truck, and 20.5% and 21.7% is the time of the empty ride. A big difference (5%) occurs the time of collecting wood in the forest depending on the number of places from which wood was loaded. This time has a significant share (17.45%) in the structure of the delivery duration. Duration of the individual stages of wood transport in particular months shows little variability.

Opis:
The State Forests National Forest Holding that manages 77.1% of the forests in Poland intend to harvest over 40 million m³ of timber, which is supposed to supply the demand from some thousand timber processing companies. Introduction of a new normative for determination of the timber load weight as a result of multiplication its volume and wood density significantly changed timber transport regulations in 2012. The study analyzes the timber supply to a large (over 300 thousand m³ of wood per year) sawmill in the first half of 2012 and 2016. On the first date standard mass conversion indices were not implemented yet. We analysed whether there are significant differences in the timber deliveries between 2012 and 2016 with regard to monthly and weekly scale as well as in relation to the days of the week. In the first half of 2012 there was 4946 deliveries, which provided more than 126 thousand m³ of timber. In the same period of 2016 there was 6109 deliveries with total volume of 178 thousand m³. Increase in timber demand by 41% resulted in an increase in the number of transports only by 23.5%. Considering the distribution of the deliveries in each of 27 weeks, the average number of courses equal to 183 per week in 2012 and 226 in 2016. In first half of 2012, no courses were recorded in week 18, 26 and 27, while the highest number – in the week 16 (305 shipments). In 2016 only in first week there was no courses, and the maximum (312 deliveries) was reached in the sixth week. Average volume of weekly deliveries in 2012 amounted to 5234 m³, while in 2016 it reached 6595 m³. Maximum values equaled 7706 and 9026 m³ respectively. We noticed significant difference in the number of shipments and the volume of the delivered timber between the study periods, which results mainly from the increased production and demand.

Opis:
The supply of raw material is the result of the logistical link between the actions of forest and wood companies. Research on sustainable development for this area of activity results from cooperation between representatives of forests, transport companies and wood industry companies. The rationale for the undertaken projects is determined by the level of interference of transport activities and taking into account its impact on the environment and social needs. The aim of the study was to verify the process of transport planning and its implementation in an economically and environmentally effective way, in terms of sustainable material flows. The results present cases of trade in coniferous raw wood material in the area of medium−sized plants, with round wood processing in the range from 30 to 100 thousand m3. The role of transport requirements in this trade was assessed, i.e. optimal use of available transport routes, vehicle loading and collection from forest areas. The paper presents the dependence of the flow of coniferous wood from forests to selected groups of sawmill customers on the distance and periodicity of demand in particular processing phases. For a properly functioning sustainable supply chain it is necessary to maintain a balance between economic aspects and environmental values. When undertaking logistic activities in the scope of raw material supplies, it is necessary to approach the indicated issues comprehensively

Effectiveness is the prism through which supply chains are defined. Different management methods can be used to measure supply chain effectiveness, such as life cycle assessment or sustainable supply chain management. In order to properly model and manage reverse supply chains for wood biomass, the structure of the supply chains was examined. For this purpose, a correlation analysis of the basic parameters of wood biomass reverse supply chains was carried out. After their identification, the level of mutual correlation was verified using Pearson's correlation coefficient. The coefficient of determination r2 was also verified for the two parameters with the highest degree of interaction – the sales of wood chips and the purchase of wood biomass. To improve the verification, scatter plots were made to further confirm the degree of interaction. As a result of the analysis of the parameter interdependencies and a discussion of the results of other international studies, the parameters were found to be applicable in modelling effective reverse supply chains of wood biomass.

Small and medium-sized enterprises play a crucial role in job creation in the wood industry. The process of employee ageing and avoidance of heavy physical effort affect the labour market contribution. The need to increase work efficiency is certainly reflected in the pressures on employees. Workplace health investigations with the Work Ability Index (WAI) is a one of several tools that take into account job requirements, the employee health status and their resources. In the conducted study, an attempt was made to assess the workability of logging workers in the private sector of small and medium-sized enterprises. Excellent work readiness was found only among harvester and forwarder operators aged 20-30. Different dynamics of WAI decline as a function of age were also observed. In general, for the study group, the WAI fluctuated at a moderate level depending on the technical equipment, age of the employees, BMI, log dimensions and quality (pulp, industry or large saw log wood) or machine productivity. The worst situation was observed during silvicultural treatments of deciduous (beech) stands using the cut-to-length (short saw log wood harvesting) method. Ageing, being overweight, deteriorating health and the mainly physical nature of work are risk factors for low (mediocre) work capacity. It can partially be modelled by increasing employee engagement through an appropriate incentive system. We often observed differences between the work demands determined by the employer's expectations and the social, physical, and health limitations of employees, which led them to seek easier jobs.

Opis:
A flat wooden pallet, being a simple logistics carrier in terms of its structure, can nonetheless be treated as a highly specialized logistical and marketing object applied in complex supply chains. Rigorous measures taken to standardize pallets are predominantly aimed at ensuring the highest possible safety level for the transported products and people handling the freight units during the complex logistical processes that involve pallets along supply chains. The goal of this article was to increase understanding of the operating strategies employed by entities using pallet pools, as well as the organizational, operational, and market challenges faced by them. It was hoped to achieve this goal via both theoretical and empirical studies. To this end, the research study applied theoretical synthesis and empirical evidence derived from primary research based on the industrial, transport, forwarding, and logistics markets. At the same time, the theoretical context was based on the literature on the subject, related to wooden pallet issues and their special role in logistical processes. Challenges connected with decisions made to enable effective and efficient management of pallet pools were addressed at legal and regulatory, as well as organizational and operational, levels. Diverse courses of action identified in several stakeholder groups were reflected in the adopted philosophy of managing the main feeding streams of pallet pools. Though limited to just the Polish market, the research study was sufficiently representative due to the strategic share of the European and global market of standard flat wooden pallets. The author proposes taking a perspective of value-added synergy as an alternative (to be understood as different and complementary rather than excluding possibilities) to other ways of approaching the value of supply chains. The undertaken considerations may contribute to increasing the awareness of the importance of taking a pallet, so common from the technical and technological point of view, as a value-added carrier in scientific considerations, due to its paradoxically low individual economic vulnerability.

This paper outlines the main challenges faced by the supply chain in the wood-based materials sector in the context of building resilience. The research work carried out made it possible to identify the main problems in the selected supply chain from the wood-based industry. They are associated with the occurrence of negative effects, including the destruction of the pallet, aging of goods in the warehouse, high packaging costs, and inefficient transport processes realization, including the processes of handling pallet units. In the context of external risks, a particular challenge is the shortage of raw materials on the market. The analyzed case study is based on the supply chain resilience assessment with regard to resilience potentials evaluation.

During the 18th century, the European political scene was dominated by the imperialist com- petition between Great Britain, France and Spain, which took a new course due to the greater development of Royal Navies. This rivalry for the dominion over the world influenced and stimulated the technological, economic and military progress, but, at the same time, this phenomenon provoked a high demand of natural resources (precious metals and raw ma- terials, especially timbers, hemp and canvas) to maintain the operational needs of Royal Navies. The purpose of this paper is to show the importance of forest resources coming from the Southern Baltic (today the territories of Germany, Poland, Russia, and Lithuania) whose abundant forests were the principal source of wood, pitch, hemp and tar, that is, basic prod- ucts used for building vessels and for keeping them in operation. With this, through the toll registers of the Sund Strait (Denmark) and archive information from Poland and Spain, I am intending to analyze and interpret the evidence of wood sup- plies from the South Baltic (especially from actual Polish ports in Gdansk and Szczecin) which were sent to the Spanish naval departments during the 18th century in order to demon- strate the importance of those forest sources for the development of Spanish naval power.
