Opis:
The aim of the presented research was to characterize the driving related to the deliveries of large−size Scots pine wood and to determine the factors affecting its structure and distance. Operation was divided in to: driving for load on a public and forest road, forest ride between loading points, as well as driving with saw logs on a forest and public road. Data on the distance traveled on forest and public roads (empty and with load), as well as, the number of loading places was determined on the data from drivers. In total, 1509 randomly selected deliveries carried out over a period of twelve months from 40 forest districts were analyzed. Investigated transports delivered 44,336 m3 of large−size pine round wood to the sawmill. Most deliveries were made within 100 km from the plant. Within this radius, 83.87% of drives for load and 75.35% drives with load were completed. The average distance for driving for load on a public road was 60.6 km, with the range from 0.5 to 205 km. The average driving distance with load to the sawmill was 70 km, the shortest distance 2 km and the longest – 238 km. Driving distances on forest roads, for and with load, was on the similar level of 3.5 and 3.4 km, respectively. The average distance in the forest, between loading points was 3.1 km, with SD=2.9 km, maximum 16 km. The largest share, 51.4% of total delivery distance, was related to driving with saw logs on a public road and depends on how many places in the forest the wood was picked up. In 36% of all deliveries, saw logs were loaded from two or more places, which involved additional drive on forest roads at the distance of 1,652 km. The analysis did not show statistically significant differences between driving depending on the season of the year. The stable wood supply during 12 months period, shows that large stocks of round wood to secure productions during sensitive periods (winter), is not needed.

Opis:
The State Forests National Forest Holding that manages 77.1% of the forests in Poland intend to harvest over 40 million m³ of timber, which is supposed to supply the demand from some thousand timber processing companies. Introduction of a new normative for determination of the timber load weight as a result of multiplication its volume and wood density significantly changed timber transport regulations in 2012. The study analyzes the timber supply to a large (over 300 thousand m³ of wood per year) sawmill in the first half of 2012 and 2016. On the first date standard mass conversion indices were not implemented yet. We analysed whether there are significant differences in the timber deliveries between 2012 and 2016 with regard to monthly and weekly scale as well as in relation to the days of the week. In the first half of 2012 there was 4946 deliveries, which provided more than 126 thousand m³ of timber. In the same period of 2016 there was 6109 deliveries with total volume of 178 thousand m³. Increase in timber demand by 41% resulted in an increase in the number of transports only by 23.5%. Considering the distribution of the deliveries in each of 27 weeks, the average number of courses equal to 183 per week in 2012 and 226 in 2016. In first half of 2012, no courses were recorded in week 18, 26 and 27, while the highest number – in the week 16 (305 shipments). In 2016 only in first week there was no courses, and the maximum (312 deliveries) was reached in the sixth week. Average volume of weekly deliveries in 2012 amounted to 5234 m³, while in 2016 it reached 6595 m³. Maximum values equaled 7706 and 9026 m³ respectively. We noticed significant difference in the number of shipments and the volume of the delivered timber between the study periods, which results mainly from the increased production and demand.

Opis:
In round wood transport, high variability of transported assortments, made of different tree species, and variability of wood moisture content do not allow to clearly determine the weight of transported raw material. This affects the exceeding gross vehicle weight (GVW) of the transport unit above the legal limit. With significant GVW exceeding, forest roads are exposed to high tonnage vehicles, which results in vehicle axle loads above the accepted design parameters for the pavement and cause faster degradation of the forest roads. The purpose of this study was to investigate the real axle loads of roundwood transport vehicles arising from the gross vehicle weight (GVW) of the transport unit in different seasons of the year and depending on the type of transport set and the type of wood assortments. Measurements of axle loads for round wood truck transport units were carried out on the sites of three large wood industry companies from the north of Poland, which process different types of wood. The load on the individual axles of high tonnage truck units was measured using Model DINI ARGEO WWSD portable truck scales with a 3590M309 weighing terminal with 0.01 t graduation. In total, measurements were taken for 904 round wood deliveries, made by different transport units. Dominated was truck and trailer set with 473 deliveries, including 344 deliveries by six-axle sets. The second most frequently observed was truck and semi-trailer, 334 deliveries, where 193 was made by six-axle sets. There is a decrease in the use of truck and dolly and truck and lightweight semi-trailer combinations, which were five-axle combinations, for round wood deliveries. The lowest axle load for all sets occurs on axle one in the range of average values of 7.07-7.86t with a spread of results from 4.49 to 10.20t. The highest average axle loads of 9.15-12.43t were found on axle two for all observed transport sets, where a maximum value of 14.52t was also found. There were statistically significant differences in the values of loads on individual axles depending on the type of truck unit, type of wood assortment and delivery date. The distribution of the total gross vehicle weight of the set is on average 58-60% to the truck (three axles) and 40-42% to the trailer/semi-trailer (two axles) in five-axle sets, and in six-axle sets the truck and trailer/semi-trailer (three axles).
