    The wills of Yorkshire women from the 14th century were drawn up on the basis of a commonly used form. The content was divided into two parts: the first one included legates for religious purposes (ad pias causas) and records concerning the burial of a given testator. The second part concerned distributing the assets among relatives or people close to the testator. This section usually included detailed lists of objects used by 14th century residents of the county and the city of York. The sums of money or items bequeathed by the testators constitute a testimony to the material position of the aforementioned women. In their wills, wealthier women donated money, jewellery, precious items made of silver, books, and clothes. Whereas, documents belonging to poorer women resemble an inventory of household items. There are also many records of livestock or products related to agricultural holdings. The descriptions included in wills indicate a great variety of items described as precisely as possible. These documents explain the material culture of the upper classes of 14th-century Yorkshire residents.

    Opis:
    Odzież jest elementem stale towarzyszącym w życiu człowieka. Pierwsze ubrania były wykonywane z liści, trawy lub skór zwierzęcych prawdopodobnie już 170 tysięcy lat temu. W tamtych czasach nie istniało pojęcie mody, a ubiór miał spełniać funkcje okrycia ciała. Z biegiem czasu zmieniały się poglądy ludzi na temat odzieży, ponieważ poza spełnieniem ważnych funkcji tj.: ochrona przed zimnem oczekiwano również, że będzie ona efektowna. Potrzeba wyróżniania się przez ludzi, wpłynęła na powstanie zjawiska mody. Wówczas w odzieży zaczęto wprowadzać dodatkowe detale w postaci ciekawych kołnierzy, oryginalnych kieszeni, czy wyjątkowych rękawów. Stało się to inspiracją do realizacji pracy, w której głównym celem było wykonanie detali, które wzbogacą odzież i nadadzą jej ciekawego charakteru. W pierwszym etapie opracowano konstrukcję i modelowanie form odzieżowych umożliwiających uzyskanie szablonu kołnierza z efektem harmonijki oraz szablonu tyłu bluzki z efektem 3D. W oparciu o opracowane szablony zostały odszyte prototypy zaproponowanych detali.
    Clothing is a constant element of human’s life. The first clothes were made of leaves, grass or animal skins probably 170,000 years ago. At that time, there was no concept of fashion and clothing was to fulfill the functions of covering the human body. Over time, people's views changed about clothing, because in addition to fulfilling important functions, i.e. a protection against the cold, it was also expected to be good looking. The need for people to stand out has influenced the emergence of fashion. Then the clothing began to introduce additional details in the form of interesting collars, original pockets or unique sleeves. It became an inspiration to carry out works, which main purpose was to make details that enrich the clothing and give it an interesting character. In the first stage, the construction and modeling of clothing forms were developed to obtain a collar template with a harmonica effect and a template for the back of blouse with a 3D effect. Based on the templates developed, prototypes of proposed details were sewn.

    Opis:
    The present study is theoretically located in the field of critical feminist studies of the representation of women in the mass media. It discusses the ways in which working women characters construct and express their occupational identity in selected American primetime TV dramas of the early 21st century. The observed strategies, which range from highly restricted self-expression to unbridled sartorial liberty, appear to be heavily correlated with the prestige of the presented occupations and their levels of masculinization/feminization. Moreover, the self-limiting sartorial choices of high-achieving professional women, frequently containing their femininity, result from the competitive nature of prestigious yet traditionally male-gendered occupations. However, it is also pointed out that working women are generally depicted as determined to accentuate the physical aspects of their femininity regardless of the established dress code or traditional gendering of their occupations. Thus, the sartorial choices made by the female characters at the workplace serve in the analyzed TV shows as symbolic manifestations of women’s growing confidence as players on the job market in their own right.

    The habit of the Carmelite Nuns of the Ancient Observance, formed on the basis of their constitutions of 1482, combined forms borrowed from the habit of the Carmelite Monks (tunics) with the models that came from Polish women’s fashion (headwear used by married women and widows – mob cap, wimple). The analysis of the habit of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns is based on extensive written sources as well as iconography. Their habit demonstrated the reception of forms of women’s clothing of Spanish provenance (a dress called saya and toca – a headdress), modified in accordance with the spirit of poverty and austerity. In the dress of candidates and in the symbols introduced to the vestition ceremony, native elements are visible. The symbolism of the habit is connected with Carmelite spirituality, whose main features are the cult of the Virgin Mary, that of the Passion, and the spirit of expiation. It also contains some meanings that come from the monastic tradition: the nuptial and baptismal significance being the symbol of new life. The habit is also the tunica sacra and the armour of the Miles Christianus.
    Strój karmelitanek dawnej obserwancji, ukształtowany w oparciu o konstytucje z 1482 roku, łączył formy zapożyczone ze strojów karmelitów (tuniki) oraz wzorce płynące z polskiej mody kobiecej (nakrycie głowy używane przez mężatki i wdowy – czepiec, rańtuch, podwika). Podstawą do analizy stroju karmelitanek bosych są bogate teksty źródłowe i ikonograficzne. Habit wykazywał recepcję form ubiorów kobiecych o proweniencji hiszpańskiej (suknia zwana saya oraz toca – nakrycie głowy), modyfikowanych zgodnie z duchem ubóstwa i surowości. W ubiorach kandydatek oraz w symbolach wprowadzonych do ceremonii obłóczyn widoczne są pierwiastki rodzime. Symbolika habitu łączy się z duchowością karmelitańską, której głównym rysem jest kult maryjny, pasyjność, duch ekspiacji. Niesie także znaczenia płynące z tradycji monastycznej: nupcjalne i chrzcielne będąc symbolem nowości życia. Habit to także tunica sacra oraz zbroja Miles Christianus.

    Celem artykułu jest scharakteryzowanie sposobu, w jaki Jan Chryzostom (ok. 347–407) przedstawia zaangażowanie chrześcijańskich kobiet w troskę o wygląd zewnętrzny, przestrzegając je przed nadmiernym strojeniem się. Na podstawie licznych pouczeń katechety, zawartych w jego homiliach, komentujących Ewangelie oraz Listy Apostolskie, zostały przedstawione argumenty Chryzostoma potępiające podobne zachowanie kobiet, odwołujące się do religijnego uzasadnienia, a także zasad regulujących życie społeczne. Lektura przytoczonych wypowiedzi Chryzostoma, komentujących niewłaściwe postępowanie wierzących, jak i konkretne zalecenia poprawy do nich skierowanych, pozwalają nam na zapoznanie się z podejściem chrześcijańskich kobiet do kwestii stroju i szerzej – wyglądu zewnętrznego, na przykładzie wspólnoty chrześcijańskiej z IV wieku.
    The aim of the article is to characterize the way in which John Chrysostom (ca. 347–407) presents the involvement of Christian women in caring for their appearance, admonishing them for excessive dressing. On the basis of the catechist’s numerous instructions contained in his homilies, commenting on the gospels and apostolic letters, Chrysostom’s arguments are presented, condemning such behavior of women, referring to religious justification and the principles regulating social life. Reading the quoted statements issued by Chrysostom, commenting on the wrong behavior of believers as well as specific recommendations for improvement addressed to them, allow us to become acquainted with the approach of Christian women to the issue of clothing and, more broadly, external appearance, on the example of the 4th-century Christian community.
