A Vicious Circle: How Canon Continues to Reinforce Sex Segregation in Literature in the 21st century

Opis:
This article demonstrates how sex segregation is still present in the canon of Western literature in the 21st century. It draws on the historical roots of the belief that male literature is qualitatively better than female literature and analyzes the various ways in which this view is reproduced by the canon and canon formation itself. The argument is based on a statistical survey of several lists trying to present the “best novel” or “works of fiction” that were published around the turn of the millennium, both those prepared by readers as well as by critics and authors, and it takes note of the tendency of people from the literary establishment to neglect female authorship. A survey of how male and female authors are categorized on the Wikipedia is also included. The article then focuses on such problematic issues as dismissing works written by women as popular and the role the publishing industry plays in this practice.

Opis:
This article deals with women-centred prose texts of the 1990s and 2000s in Russia written by women, and focuses especially on generation narratives. By this term the author means fictional texts that explore generational relations within families, from the perspective of repressed experiences, feelings and attitudes in the Soviet period. The selected texts are interpreted as narrating and conceptualizing the consequences of patriarchal ideology for relations between mothers and daughters and for reconstructing connections between Soviet and post-Soviet by revisiting and remembering especially the gaps and discontinuities between (female) generations. The cases discussed are Liudmila Petrushevskaia’s ‘povest’ Vremia noch [The Time: Night] (1991), Liudmila Ulitskaia’s novel Medeia i ee deti [Medea and her Children] (1996) and Elena Chizhova’s novel Vremia zhenshchin [The Time of Women] (2009). These novels reflect on the one hand the woman-centredness and novelty of representation in women’s prose writing in the post-Soviet period. On the other hand, the author suggests that they reflect the diverse methods of representing the Soviet era and experience through generation narratives. The texts reassess the past through intimate, tactile memories and perceptions, and their narration through generational plots draws attention to the process of working through, which needs to be done in contemporary Russia. The narratives touch upon the untold stories of those who suffered in silence or hid the family secrets from the officials, in order to save the family. The narration delves into the different layers of experience and memory, conceptualizing them in the form of multiple narrative perspectives constructing different generations and traditions. In this way they convey the ‘secrets’ hidden in the midst of everyday life routines and give voice to the often silent resistance of women towards patriarchal and repressive ideology. The new women’s prose of the 1980s–90s and the subsequent trend of women-centred narratives and generation narratives employ conceptual metaphors of reassessing, revisiting and remembering the cultural, experiential, and emotional aspects of the past, Soviet lives.

The article aims to present the themes of popular contemporary women’s novels. The contexts for the analyses are stereotypes of sex and commercial expectations. The marketing strategy of the publishers and authors is important as well as the changing rules about creating the image of an author by the media. Pretending social involvement in popular women’s novels is connected with marketing strategies and the need to refer to popular subjects is of secondary importance. What is important, however, is the literary awareness of the authors and the capacity of recognizing the place of one’s own creativity on the map of pop culture.

The present article examines how Antonella Cilento reinvents the myth of Philomela in Lisario o il piacere infinito delle donne, Premio Strega finalist (2014) and winner of Boccaccio Prize (2014). After evidencing the narrative aspects of Ovid’s myth – the rape; the cutting out of the tongue depriving the raped woman of her voice; the expression of the violence she experienced – the analysis focuses on how Cilento overturns the myth by interweaving Ovid’s tale with the topos of Sleeping Beauty. Despite her silencing, Lisario discovers and appropriates the pleasure that can be drawn from her body. The paper concludes by considering how the protagonist finds new and non violent ways to express herself and relate to future generations of women.

An especially important aspect of the phenomenon described, is the contribution of women which, as demonstrated here using the example of the Milanese writer Anna Zuccari Radius, pseudonym Neera, provides an alternative perspective to the concepts propagated by the official culture.

Opis:
This paper discusses two novels by contemporary writer Inga Iwasiów (b. 1963), Bambino (2008) and Ku słońcu [Towards the Sun] (2010), in the context of geopolitical, ideological, social and psycho-cultural transformations as they specifically affect different generations of inhabitants of the Polish city of Szczecin (pre-1945 German Stettin) from 1945 until the first decade of the 21st century. Bambino covers the years 1945–1981, but also contains flashbacks to pre-war memory of Stettin and to the suppressed experiences of the new post-war inhabitants, as well as ‘flash-forwards’ to post-1989, post-communist reality; Ku słońcu covers 1981 to the first decade of 2000s. It shows how the novels portray these transformations through the experience primarily of women (but not only) — in Bambino, through the main protagonists: Ula (formerly Ulrike), Anna and Marysia, and through that of the hidden narrator Magda (Marysia’s daughter born in the same year as the author, Iwasiów, 1963); and in Ku słońcu, primarily through the experience of Magda herself, as well as through that of two generations of ‘feminist’ academics: Małgorzata and Sylwia (in which it is hard not to perceive the personal experience of the author, though she is at pains to emphasize elsewhere that her work is a collective biography of the city, not so much of herself). The analysis follows Katarzyna Chmielewska’s supposition that contemporary Polish fiction dealing with the past ‘constantly oscillates between memory and genealogy’, and that it raises raw issues not yet addressed by historians; it also derives inspiration from the new ‘postdependency’ studies proposed by Hanna Gosk and Ryszard Nycz. It also attempts to capture the specific nature of Iwasiów’s use of language, her style of feminism, her method of portraying place, and the connections in her prose between place and memory.

The article describes the late essays by Maria Kuncewiczowa entitled Przeźrocza (Slides) in the context of the essay regarded through the prism of gender studies and in the context of the relations between essay and autobiography. The essayistic project by Kuncewiczowa is connected with abandoning the autobiographical aspect and choosing her original version of senile feminine essay understood as the sketchy, anty-erudite text, which is dominated by specific formula of metaphorism as encoding the metaphysical senses within the description of quotidian details.

This paper explores the presence of gender-conscious attitudes in the works of the Czech author Lenka Procházková (born 1951), a member of the dissident movement during the communist regime. It argues that her writings took issue with patriarchal social structures, yet sometimes camouflaged these challenges behind criticism of the totalitarian rule. These expressions, which one might be tempted to consider as feminist from a Western and 21st-century point of view, emerged within East European dissident culture and probably without exposure to Western feminist concepts. Procházková developed a model of an inner exile for dissidents that originated in a canonical work of Czech literature by Božena Němcová and from which one of her female protagonists draws strength. Thus, her works suggest that Western gender theories are limited in their potential to assess East European dissident women’s writing, when they fail to include local literary traditions.

In 1954 a young country woman from New South Wales, Shirley Dunk, ex- ercised her agency and travelled to London. This was a journey to the home of her fore- fathers and copied the activities of other country women who made similar journeys. Some of the earliest of these journeys were undertaken by the wives and daughters of the 19th-century rural gentry. This research project will use a qualitative approach in an examination of Shirley’s journey archive complemented with supplementary interviews and stories of other travellers. Shirley nostalgically recalled the sense of adventure that she experienced as she left Sydney for London by ship and travelled through the United Kingdom and Europe. The article will address questions posed by the journey for Shirley and her travelling companion, Beth, and how they dealt with these forces as tourists and travellers. Shirley’s letters home were reported in the country press and reminiscent of soldier’s wartime letters home that described their tales as tourists in foreign lands. The narrative will show that Shirley, as an Australian country girl, was exposed to the cosmo- politan nature of the metropole, as were other women. The paper will explore how Shirley was subject to the forces of modernity and consumerism at a time when rural women were often limited to domesticity.

The article is the analysis of the place of Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna in contemporary literary discourse. The author of the article claims – using Pierre Bayard’s theory – that the poetess is known “more or less”: she is remembered as someone who got prizes and recognition but at the same time she is impossible to read nowadays. There is political ambiguity and antiquity in her texts that keep her in the past. Marzec points at four areas of literary studies, where Iłłakowiczówna is still present: 1. Poetics: Iłłakowiczówna uses an original and unusual type of the Polish tonic verse. The author of this article analyses it using tools of psychoanalysis. 2. Religious discourse: Iłłakowicz.wna is interpreted as the author of religious poetry but Marzec argues with such interpretations. 3. Post-dependence studies: Iłłakowiczówna has not been analysed in terms of post-dependence studies yet but she is mentioned in the Polish borderlines discourse. 4. Feminist literary criticism: Iłłakowiczówna used to be studied as the author of androgynous poetry, but Marzec points out other motifs such as miscarriage, infanticide or problems of the new woman, like work at government institution, contestation of vitalism and bureaucracy. The aimof this article is to show that writing of Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna needs to be read in terms of the history of literature which is devoid of evaluation and judging. Such analysis means going back in terms of modern literary studies which have undergone multiple turns that changed the tools accessible to contemporary critics.

On December 31, 1886, she swallowed sulphur from matches and died a few days later. Waligórska’s letters are a testimony of the time spent in prison, but not only. In the letters to her sister, she discussed such topics as the conditions of everyday existence, life in prison and organisation, but also included her reflections on culture, literature and art. She tried to fill her time in prison with translation work. The surviving letters have been published in an innovative graphic form and their edition is a breakthrough in editorial work on archival documents. The print meticulously keeps all the corrections and crosses of the original. Monika Rudaś-Grodzka treated Bronisława Waligórska’s letters with great respect; she approached them with a passion and sensitivity of an archivist who not only analyses the content of the remaining documents, but is always aware that they are a testimony of the life of a particular person. Thanks to thepeculiar attitude of the researcher, Waligórska, while being the protagonist of the book, never stopped being its author. The edition of letters from prison are accompanied by an editor’s note, a description of the terms of publications, a timeline, the main protagonist’s prison biography and a selection of documents concerning the investigation.

Opis:
This essay offers an overview of the diversity of women’s prose writing that emerged on the Czech cultural scene in the post-communist era. To that end it briefly characterizes the work of eight Czech women authors who were born within the first two decades after World War II and began to create during the post-1968 era of ‘normalization’. In this broad sense they belong to a single generation. With rare exception their work was not officially published in their homeland until the 1990s. The writers included are: Lenka Procházková, Tereza Boučková, Alexandra Berková, Zuzana Brabcová, Daniela Hodrová, Sylvie Richterová, Iva Pekárková, and Eva Hauserová. The overview is followed by a concise comparative analysis of texts by three very different writers (Procházková, Pekárková, and Hodrová), using a feminist critical approach. There is also an appendix of works by these writers available in English translation.

Opis:
In the article we study two visions of the city. A “classical” and allegorical one is included in Christine de Pizan’s well-known oeuvre, Le Livre de la Cité des Dames (1404/1405). We compare it to a biographically conditioned construction from the essays "Digues que m’estimes encara que sigui mentida" (1991) by the Catalan writer Montserrat Roig. The key factor in our analysis is the chronotope structure and the relationship between the image of the city and the writing act. We note a number of similarities between the two visions, some of them stemming from the identity and the social and cultural situation of the feminine subject, but also point out some differences, as those determined by the historical context of both texts and their literary genres.

Opis:
The purpose of the present paper is to analyse epistolary and descriptive conventions in Journal and Letters, from France and Great Britain (1833) by Emma Willard. The article argues that Willard attempts to combine the standards of 18th-century travelogue with its emphasis on instruction with a new type of autobiographical travel narrative which puts the persona of a traveller in the foreground. In this respect, Willard’s Journal and Travels, for all its didacticism, testifies to an increasing value attached to subjective experience, which was to become one of the distinguishing features of nineteenth-century travel writing.

Der Artikel enthält Zusammenfassungen nur in Englisch und Französisch.
In the line of recent studies (Reid, 2010; Planté, 2003), this contribution deals with the place of the feminine authors in the French literary canon and with the status of author. This political question also raises questions about the corpus’ construction of the classics of the literature which are taught and serve as references in literary studies. If women represent approximately 50 % of the world’s population, they are far from proportionally representing in literature. Thus, the scarcity of women in Literary History will be at the center of our preoccupation, and we will endeavor to show how societies have influenced the representation of women in literature, and how feminine authors have denunced the image of inequalities between men and women in their works.

Opis:
This bilingual issue which we are now submitting to the reader takes up the theme of broadly understood travelling, being on the road, wandering, both near (not far from home) and very distant (into unknown realms of time and space). Travelling is associated with discovering new places, getting to know people and cultures, gaining experience, sometimes also pursuing a goal along winding and difficult paths. At other times, travel becomes an end in itself; it can be a way of life in which movement and change are core values. Not all journeys presented in this volume serve the purpose of recreation. Some were caused by oppressive conditions and threats to life and livelihood, which result in emigration, alienation and sacrifices that leave their mark on many generations. An inseparable element of travelling is the risk taken by the explorer. However, as the presented collection of articles confirms, journeys often become a creative impulse that leads to discovering oneself and one’s own culture in contact with the people one meets, with their customs and the places one gets to know.
Dwujęzyczny numer, który oddajemy do rąk czytelników, to zbiór artykułów podejmujących motyw szeroko rozumianej podróży, drogi,wędrówki zarówno bliskiej (nieopodal domu), jak i bardzo odległej (w nieznane rewiry czasu i przestrzeni). Podróżowanie wiąże się z odkrywaniem nowych miejsc, poznawaniem ludzi i kultur, zdobywaniem doświadczeń, docieraniem do celu nieraz krętymi i trudnymi ścieżkami.

Opis:
Sibilla Aleramo (1876–1960) and Emilia Szenwicowa (1889–1972), Polish journalist and translator, met in 1927: the Italian writer hoped that Szenwicowa would translate her novel Amo dunque sono into Polish. A year later, Aleramo spent a few weeks on vacation in Positano, in the villa of the Szenwic family, where she often returned until the outbreak of World War II. In 1931, thanks to Szenwicowa’s mediation, Aleramo undertook the translation of Dom kobiet, a theatrical piece by Zofia Nałkowska, into French and literal Italian, using mediatory versions. A collection of Aleramo’s letters has recently been found in the family archive of the Polish journalist’s heirs. The letters, published for the first time in the present paper in fragments, testify to the profound friendship that united the two intellectuals, and document, amongst other things, their various collaborative projects concerning the translation of theatre plays from Polish to Italian. The aim of the paper is to analyse the moments of correspondence between Aleramo and Szenwicowa that refer to the theatre.

Wypełnia ważną lukę w badaniach nad literaturą emigracyjną, wskazuje na nowe perspektywy jej odczytań, korzysta z najnowszych osiągnięć badawczych feminizmu i studiów postkolonialnych.
The subject of the article is work by Bożena Karwowska The Second Sex in Exile. Experience the Story of Migration in the Postwar Polish Writers, established as a result of long study of the different variations and works of women’s writing in exile and is a successful attempt to systematize the problems of exile in the work of women. The article indicated that the starting point for discussion by the researcher of the migration experience in the work of postwar Polish writers is the thesis with clear differences between exile stories of men and women. The article noted that the book by Bożena Karwowska is marked by a strong feature of the individual, for it is written from the perspective of an immigrant. The work fills an important gap in the research literature of exile, points to new perspectives of its reading, using the latest research achievements of feminism and postcolonial studies.

Opis:
The essay offers an analysis of Flesh and Blood, a novel by Michèle Roberts, first published in 1994. It discusses the book from the vantage point of French feminist criticism, especially écriture feminine, as well as gynocritics. The theory serves as a reference point for a better understanding of the novel’s structure, language and plot. In the opening paragraphs, the essay delineates the main premises of écriture feminine, a French feminist theory represented primarily by Hélène Cixous and Luce Irigaray, and gynocritics, a concept developed by the American feminist scholar Elaine Showalter. It then moves on to portray Flesh and Blood as an example of écriture feminine, analysing the aspects of the novel that mirror the theories of the French feminist critics: characters, motifs, structure, formal ploys and language.
