Opis:
As the centenaries of the events of the Great War are commemorated in Britain, a wave of new memorials and commemorative practices have been developed. These are additions to an already well-established ‘landscape of memory,’ with memorials built in the war’s immediate aftermath across villages, towns and cities in Britain. This article examines these new sites of memory and mourning to reveal how social, moral and political identi- ties within contemporary Britain are constructed through places that enable individuals and communities to ‘bear witness’ to the conflict.

Opis:
The initial years of the Bible Investigators (Jehovah’s Witnesses) are the merit of their founder, Charles Taze Russell. Of a little research group he made the organization which covers many countries on all continents. He propagated his ideas by the editorialpropagandist corporation, named Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society, which he established and became its president. Many missionary travels of Russel and his followers, especially the four-month Evangelic travel around the World, led to a dynamic growth of the organization, what is proved with offices in several countries and hundred thousands followers and sympathizers of this religious movement. In the year 1914 the organization suffered form its first serious crisis caused by the undone prophecy of the end of world’s system and the presence of Christ in the world. However, in spite of the crisis and resignation of many members, the organization survived.

Opis:
The moral teaching of Jehovah’s Witnesses about the proper lifestyle em-phasizes, above all, due relations with parents and peers, entertainment and concern for the health of adolescents. In the articles of the Society of the Watchtower, the authors of the magazines emphasize that young people choose such friends for whom moral values are the basic measure of Christian life. The attitude of humiliation towards parents should result from purely religious reasons, and disobedience results in suspicion, lack of trust and abandonment of spiritual practices. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that young people reach for stimulants to alleviate problems. Regardless of the consequences, they destroy health and ruin their own future. The young man begins to compensate for the lack of due love by reaching for the drug. Young people use free time not always in a constructive way. They play sports, but often for vain competition and fame. They listen to loud music isolating themselves from external stimuli. They often fall into gambling and pornography, making themselves slaves of their own mistakes and falls. According to Jehovahʼs Witnesses, these symptoms mean “last days”. Only those who reject moral contamination can expect a beautiful future.

Opis:
The article describes Jehovah’s Witnesses women as one of less remembered groups among victims of the Nazi regime. What is pointed out, first of all, is the state of research ontheir history, especially pertaining to their camp experience, Western literature on the subject and a negligible number of Polish research works devoted to the topic in question, and also some methodological dilemmas related to researching it. The author presents the circumstances of German Jehovah’s Witnesses after Hitler’s seizure of power, their subsequent persecutions, and also – reconstructed on the basis of documents, witnesses reports, and the members of persecuted group themselves – the fate of female followers of this religion (“the purple triangles”) in concentration camps. The author’s main points of focus are, described by witnesses/beholders/onlookers of the events, acts and attitudes of “the purple triangles” marked by strong spirituality, at the same time unbreakable/intransigent in their defiance of/against violence and the authorities’ orders. (Everybody knew that Jehovah’s Witnesses could have basically “sign off” from the camp by putting their signature at the bottom of a declaration that they would renounce their faith and cease to practise their religion.) Such a defiance may be better understood, the author claims, by interpreting it in the light of the anthropological concept of emotional communities.

Opis:
In the paper the author discusses the issues related to the persecution of Jehovah’s Witnesses by the authorities of the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian Apostolic Church, which enjoys the status of the national church. In Armenia Jehovah’s Witnesses are commonly perceived as a „particularly negative sect”. Due to their refusal to perform military service (which is important in the situation of the still not resolved conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh) they are treated as traitors to their own nation. The registration application of Jehovah’s Witnesses was rejected by the authorities fifteen times and despite the & nal success with the registration they still face numerous obstacles which makes it hard to exercise their faith openly. The author’s intention is to raise awareness to the fact that Armenians still demonstrate a negative attitude to all religious minorities, as the re{ ection of the generally prevailing „fear of strangers”. The actions of local TV channels broadcasting current affairs programs in which minorities are shown as enemies to the country and the national unity, can also be blames. Social attitudes explicitly indicate that for Armenians religious diversity constitutes a threat to the ethnic unity. Papers devoted to the freedom of religion published before 2015 show that Jehovah’s Witnesses were the ones particularly persecuted. The blame for such a situation lies to a large extent with the clergy of the Armenian Apostolic Church who encourage locals to defend the national church. The issue of religious minorities is also used in the political struggle. According to some leading Armenian politicians Jehovah’s Witnesses run the policy which is most destructive for Armenia. The blame for the spread of sects in Armenia is put on Western European countries and the United States of America which are believed to & nance sects with the intention to destroy all Orthodox Christian churches that preserve national identity. It is widely believed that America supports sects as it is interested in destabilization of geopolitical situation in the regions close to Russia. The author also tries to find an answer to the question why, despite such unfavorable conditions, Jehovah’s Witnesses in Armenia keep gaining more followers at an increasing rate.

Opis:
Jehovah’s Witnesses were banned as a religious community in the USSR. It was only after the collapse of the Soviet Union that the first registrations of the recognized religious communities followed in the territory of the Soviet Republics. In the Soviet Union, the government used media as a propaganda tool to create the image of Jehovah’s Witnesses as an anti-social and harmful group. They were accused of political activities, espionage to the US, and antisocial behavior. The films and press were used. The manipulation of information was based on agitations, false information, halftruths, political agitation and slander. The consequence of this was a wide-ranging discrimination against the witnesses. Their children got poorer grades, and employers refused to accept the money and leave. In order to win Jehovah’s Witnesses for Communist ideology and to break down organizational structures, the security services of the Eastern Bloc were working together, and in particular the Ministry of State Security of the GDR made a great contribution to this area. After 1990, the persecuted Jehovah’s Witnesses were rehabilitated. They received victim cards and compensation money. Both in Russia and other postsovskaya republics there are tendencies to the progressive restriction of freedom of expression and religion. Since March 2015, the importation of literature from Jehovah’s Witnesses to Russia has been banned. In July 2015, their official website was forbidden. The public prosecutor’s office investigates some of Jehovah’s Witnesses because of their religious activities. On July 17, 2017 the Supreme Court of Russia confirmed its earlier ruling that criminalized the activity of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia. Jehovah’s Witnesses have submitted 28 applications to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) because of the allegations of extremism and related maladministration. In 2015, the US Human Rights Commission reiterated its recommendations to Russia, which had previously been addressed (in 2003 and 2009), „to revise the law to combat extremist activities”.

This paper describes the results of an empirical study in which the objective was to find out how traumatic narratives by Shoah survivors are handled in a classroom setting. The study was conducted using an ethnographic approach by means of which a history lesson sequence was observed and analysed. The teaching medium of the lesson was a digitised presentation of memories by Shoah survivors. The description of the lesson establishes how teachers and students negotiate the difficult terrain of an emotional engagement with the testimonies. The findings are discussed by elaborating on the meaning of traumatic memories for the witnesses, and in turn by asking what it means to listen to the telling of such memories. Conclusions are drawn about the overall meaning of (history) education.

After the death of Charles Taze Russell, Joseph F. Rutherford was elected the president of the Bible Student movement. He managed to stabilize the move-ment and changed its name into Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was primarily focused on centralizing the administrative structure and the development of its mission-ary activities. Numerous radio stations of the Watchtower Society were launched under his presidency. He also introduced an innovative method of spreading Jehovah’s Witnesses’ doctrine with gramophone soundtracks. Apart from radio stations, annual congresses made their contribution in reinforcing the structure of the organization and the development of its missionary activities. President Rutherford also procured that Jehovah’s Witnesses’ literature was printed by the Watchtower Society. In addition to the main printing-office in Brooklyn, a number of small printing-offices were shortly established all over the world. In the development of the organization a big part was played by numerous Rutherford’s “missionary” journeys, particularly those to European countries, as well as activities of many other devoted members of the Watch-tower Society. Under Rutherford’s presidency, the doctrine of Jehovah’s Wit-nesses was successfully spread over six continents.

The purpose of this study is to show the martyrdom of rev. Stanisław Streich, murdered on February 27, 1938 in the church of st. Jana Bosko in Luboń in the context of the trial of the murderer – Wawrzyniec Nowak. The fact of a crime committed by a communist against a Catholic priest was widely echoed throughout the pre-war Polish Republic. The press of that time, broadly commenting on the murder, but above all on the stages of individual court hearings, became an extremely valuable source of information. Press articles supported by the memories of eyewitnesses of the murder of the priest, from the very beginning gave a clear message about the martyrdom of the parish priest from Luboń, which, despite many difficulties related to the positioning of post-war Poland in the communist bloc, was in a straight line to start the cause of beatification. The research process in the article was carried out using the analytical-synthetic method, which made it possible to compile and summarize the studied material as a whole and to research the sources in terms of the selected issue included in the topic of the work, draw conclusions and answer the questions posed.

At the theoretical and empirical levels the social capital of the Jehovah’s Witness communities in contemporary Ukrainian society is examined. The necessity of sociological study of the influence of social capital (J. Coleman, R. Patnam, M. Oberg etc.) on the formation and development of neoprotestant religious communities is substantiated. On the basis of 40 semi-structured interviews with Jehovah’s Witnesses the social capital of JW communities is analyzed. It is concluded that latter is is driven by high regulatory and symbolic integration within the community, as well as intensified inclusive social ties. As a consequence, the individual’s involvement in JW community structure, dependence on it and solidarity with the goals of its activity increases. Such a process does not, however, contribute to the creation of cross-sectional social bonds, which is a problematic basis for the further creation of social capital in society scale.

The article discusses select literary images and presentations of March 1968, which are treated as an example of a postcatastrophic narration. The author states that the events of the years 1967-1968 are often depicted in Polish literature as a kind of a “recurring catastrophe” – predicting an event of the calibre of the Holocaust. Similarities and parallels can be noticed on the artistic level (ways of representation) and ideological (judgement of events). Consequently, the catastrophe does not fulfil its cathartic function and does not become a breakthrough, instead its characteristic features are repetitions and new configurations. Finally, the author asks whether, and to what extent, Polish remembrance of March overlaps with the remembrance of the Holocaust, and to what degree the struggle with anti-Semitism in 1967-1968 was simultaneously a struggle with anti-Semitism during WWII.
