The article explores the quality of multicast trees constructed by heuristic routing algorithms in wireless sensor networks where topology control protocols operate. Network topology planning and performance analysis are crucial challenges for wire and wireless network designers. They are also involved in the research on routing algorithms, and protocols for these networks. In addition, it is worth to emphasize that the generation of realistic network topologies makes it possible to construct and study routing algorithms, protocols and traffic characteristics for WSN networks.

Opis:
Over the last few years, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have started to play more and more important role in civil and military applications. A typical sensor network consists of resource-constrained sensing nodes, which monitor environment and send the data to more powerful gateway nodes. The goal of gateway nodes is to aggregate, process and send the data to other gateways or directly to sink nodes. The proper placement of nodes is needed to provide good network operation. Sensing nodes are often placed in a random manner unlike gateways. Gateways, due to their role and cost, are installed rather in a controlled way. In this paper, a bi-criteria gateway placement problem is introduced. The problem is shown to be NP-hard. We formulate it as a linear programming problem, then we develop the Multi-criteria Simulated Allocation (MSAL) heuristic algorithm, for the purpose of cost-effective gateway deployment and power-effective wireless connection management. Finally, we evaluate the efficiency of the algorithm by comparison with the exact method.

The major challenge in designing wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is to find tradeoff between the desired and contrary requirements for the lifetime, coverage or cost while coping with the computation, energy and communication constraints. This paper examines the optimal placement of nodes for a WSN. It is impossible to consider the deployment of the nodes separately from WSNs applications. We highlight the properties of WSNs applications that determine the placement problem. We identify and enumerate the various objectives that should be considered. The paper provides an overview and concentrates on multi-objective strategies, their assumptions, optimization problem formulation and results.

Wireless sensor network consists of numerous small and low cost sensors which collect and transmit environmental data. These nodes are spatially distributed and capable of measuring their ambient. Sensor node is responsible for collecting data in regular intervals, converting the obtained data into electronic signals and transmitting data to sink node or base station through reliable wireless communications. Moreover, these nodes are supplied by non-rechargeable batteries with limited energy. Lifetime and network coverage are crucial factors in WSNs. Thus, particular algorithms must be employed so that energy consumption is reduced. In this paper two clustering algorithms LEACH and HEED are investigated.

Extensive utilization of WSN is the reason of advancement of numerous routing protocols. The Late advances in WSN now witness the expanded enthusiasm for the potential use in applications like Environmental, Military, Space Exploration, Health (Scanning), Vehicular Movement, disaster management, Mechanical anxiety levels of appended objects, battle field observation and so forth. Sensors are required to be remotely conveyed in unattended situations. Propels in WSN innovation has given the accessibility of little and minimal effort sensor hubs with a capacity of sensing different sorts of physical and natural environment conditions, wireless communication and data processing. Assortment of sensing capacities results in bounty of application areas. However, the attributes of WSN require more powerful strategies for data forwarding. The sensor hubs in WSN have a constrained transmission range, and their handling and capacity abilities and as well as their energy assets are also restricted. Routing protocols for WSN are in charge of keeping up the routes in the network system and need to guarantee dependable multi-hop communication under these conditions. Routing as one key innovations of wireless sensor systems has now turned into a hot examination on the grounds that the uses of WSN are all over the place, it is unthinkable that there is a routing protocol suitable for all applications. In this paper, we give an overview of routing issues routing protocols for Wireless Sensor Network.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have existed for many years and had assimilated many interesting innovations. Advances in electronics, radio transceivers, processes of IC manufacturing and development of algorithms for operation of such networks now enable creating energy-efficient devices that provide practical levels of performance and a sufficient number of features. Environmental monitoring is one of the areas in which WSNs can be successfully used. At the same time this is a field where devices must either bring their own power reservoir, such as a battery, or scavenge energy locally from some natural phenomena. Improving the efficiency of energy harvesting methods reduces complexity of WSN structures. This survey is based on practical examples from the real world and provides an overview of state-of-the-art methods and techniques that are used to create energyefficient WSNs with energy harvesting.

An original wireless sensor network for vibration measurements was designed. Its primary purpose is modal analysis of vibrations of large structures. A number of experiments have been performed to evaluate the system, with special emphasis on the influence of different effects on simultaneity of data acquired from remote nodes, which is essential for modal analysis. One of the issues is that quartz crystal oscillators, which provide time reading on the devices, are optimized for use in the room temperature and exhibit significant frequency variations if operated outside the 20–30°C range. Although much research was performed to optimize algorithms of synchronization in wireless networks, the subject of temperature fluctuations was not investigated and discussed in proportion to its significance. This paper describes methods used to evaluate data simultaneity and some algorithms suitable for its improvement in small to intermediate size ad-hoc wireless sensor networks exposed to varying temperatures often present in on-site civil engineering measurements.

Opis:
This paper aims at designing, building, and simulating a secured routing protocol to defend against packet dropping attacks in mobile WSNs (MWSNs). This research addresses the gap in the literature by proposing Configurable Secured Adaptive Routing Protocol (CSARP). CSARP has four levels of protection to allow suitability for different types of network applications. The protocol allows the network admin to configure the required protection level and the ratio of cluster heads to all nodes. The protocol has an adaptive feature, which allows for better protection and preventing the spread of the threats in the network. The conducted CSARP simulations with different conditions showed the ability of CSARP to identify all malicious nodes and remove them from the network. CSARP provided more than 99.97% packets delivery rate with 0% data packet loss in the existence of 3 malicious nodes in comparison with 3.17% data packet loss without using CSARP. When compared with LEACH, CSARP showed an improvement in extending the lifetime of the network by up to 39.5%. The proposed protocol has proven to be better than the available security solutions in terms of configurability, adaptability, optimization for MWSNs, energy consumption optimization, and the suitability for different MWSNs applications and conditions.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are used to monitor strategic (from the public safety point of view) parameters of air pollutions. Technological progress in the area of sensor networks allows manufacturing centimetre-scale sensor nodes that may cost less than a few USD per piece. This enables using sensor nodes at such a scale allowing for ubiquitous computing. Initially, the sensor networks were wired solutions. Development of wireless data processing technologies (processors, algorithms, etc.) enables to monitor much larger area compared to wired solutions. The next natural step of sensor network development was to enable mobile monitoring by mounting sensor nodes on moving vehicles, i.e. allowing for much better sensor data resolution at virtually the same cost. This article is an introduction to issues of wireless and mobile sensor networks.

The recent decades have seen the growth in the fields of wireless communication technologies, which has made it possible to produce components with a rational cost of a few cubic millimeters of volume, called sensors. The collaboration of many of these wireless sensors with a basic base station gives birth to a network of wireless sensors. The latter faces numerous problems related to application requirements and the inadequate abilities of sensor nodes, particularly in terms of energy. In order to integrate the different models describing the characteristics of the nodes of a WSN, this paper presents the topological organization strategies to structure its communication. For large networks, partitioning into sub-networks (clusters) is a technique used to reduce consumption, improve network stability and facilitate scalability.

Wireless sensor networks are typically operated on batteries. Therefore, in order to prolong network lifetime, an energy efficient routing algorithm is required. In this paper, an energy-aware routing protocol for the co-operative MIMO scheme in WSNs (EARPC) is presented. It is based on an improved cluster head selection method that considers the remaining energy level of a node and recent energy consumption of all nodes. This means that sensor nodes with lower energy levels are less likely to be chosen as cluster heads. Next, based on the cooperative node selection in each cluster, a virtual MIMO array is created, reducing uneven distribution of clusters. Simulation results show that the proposed routing protocol may reduce energy consumption and improve network lifetime compared with the LEACH protocol.

Progress of ICT is shifting the paradigm of systems organization towards a distributed approach, in which physical deployment of components influences the evaluation of systems properties. This contribution can be considered as a problem of graph layout optimization, well-known in literature where several approaches have been exploited in different application fields with different solving techniques. Then again, complex systems can be only studied by means of different formalisms which codification is the aim of language engineering. Telemaco is a tool that supports a novel approach for the application of graph layout optimizations to heterogeneous models, based on the OsMoSys framework and on the language engineering principles. It can cope with different graph-based formalisms by exploiting either their core graph nature or their different specialized features by means of language hierarchies. In this paper Telemaco is introduced together with its foundations and an example of application to Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) deployment.

Opis:
In this paper, the regression analysis technique is applied to a large water quality dataset for the Sitnica River in Kosovo. It has been done to assess the correlation between water quality parameters. The data are generated by a wireless sensors network deployed in Sitnica. A regression analysis is applied to four water quality parameters: temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and electrical conductivity. The correlation between each pair of parameters has been assessed by using the WEKA software package, which is a popular time-saving tool for data analysis in distinct domains. The data are pre-processed to exclude out-of-range values and then the assessment of correlation for the pairs of parameters is applied. In comparison to other pairs of water quality parameters, the results show that dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity correlate particularly closely with temperature. Regression equations of these two pairs of parameters may provide inferred information on dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity about the Sitnica River. Such information may otherwise not be available to resource managers in Kosovo. Moreover, due to its easy to use and availability as an open-source software, WEKA may aid decision-makers on the management providing almost real-time information about surface water quality within the basin. This can be particularly useful especially in the case of continuous observation of water quality and a huge dataset gathered by using wireless sensors.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) acquired a lot of attention due to their widespread use in monitoring hostile environments, critical surveillance and security applications. In these applications, usage of wireless terminals also has grown significantly. Grouping of Sensor Nodes (SN) is called clustering and these sensor nodes are burdened by the exchange of messages caused due to successive and recurring re-clustering, which results in power loss. Since most of the SNs are fitted with nonrechargeable batteries, currently researchers have been concentrating their efforts on enhancing the longevity of these nodes. For battery constrained WSN concerns, the clustering mechanism has emerged as a desirable subject since it is predominantly good at conserving the resources especially energy for network activities. This proposed work addresses the problem of load balancing and Cluster Head (CH) selection in cluster with minimum energy expenditure. So here, we propose hybrid method in which cluster formation is done using unsupervised machine learning based kmeans algorithm and Fuzzy-logic approach for CH selection.

Pipelines, wellbores and ground installations are permanently controlled by sensors spread across the crucial points in the whole area. One of the most popular techniques to support proper oil drive in a wellbore is a Gas Lift. In this paper we present the concept of using wireless sensornetwork (WSN) in the oil and gas industry installations. Assuming that Gas Lift Valves (GLVs) in a wellbore annulus are sensor controlled, the proper amount of injected gas should be provided. In aground installation, the optimized amount of loaded gas is a key factor in the effcient oil production. This paper considers the basic foundations and security requirements of WSN dedicated to Gas Lift Installations. Possible attack scenarios and their influence on the production results are shown aswell.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have experienced enormous growth, both in terms of the technology used and their practical applications. In order to understand the features of WSNs that make the solution suitable for a specific purpose, one needs to be aware of the theoretical concepts behind and technological aspects of WSNs. In this paper, the significance of WSNs is illustrated, with a particular emphasis placed on their demands and on understanding researchrelated problems. A review of the literature available is presented as well. Detailed discussions concerning sensor node architecture, different types of sensors used and their relevance for various types of WSNs is presented, highlighting the need to achieve application-specific requirements without degrading service quality. Multipath and cluster-based routing protocols are compared in order to analyze QoS requirements they are capable of satisfying, and their suitability for different application areas is reviewed. This survey highlights the performance of different routing protocols, therefore providing guidelines enabling each of the routing techniques to be used, in an efficient manner, with factors such as specific network structure, protocol operation and routing path construction taken into consideration in order to achieve better performance.

Energy is one of the crucial performance parameters in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Enhancement of network lifetime is an important consideration as well. Low energy-aware clustering hierarchy (LEACH) is one of the protocols proposed for WSNs. In this paper, a residual energy-aware clustering transformation protocol for LEACH (REACT-LEACH), enhancing performance of LEACH by introducing a clustering mechanism, is proposed. The proposed cluster head (CH) rotation and cluster reformation processes are more effective in REACT-LEACH, as residual energy is considered to be one of the metrics. Performance of REACT-LEACH is validated based on simulations.

Opis:
Wireless sensor networks have attracted attention of researchers considering their abundant applications. One of the important issues in this network is limitation of energy consumption which is directly related to life of the network. One of the main works which have been done recently to confront with this problem is clustering. In this paper, an attempt has been made to present clustering method which performs clustering in two stages. In the first stage, it specifies candidate nodes for being head cluster with fuzzy method and in the next stage, the node of the head cluster is determined among the candidate nodes with cellular learning automata. Advantage of the clustering method is that clustering has been done based on three main parameters of the number of neighbors, energy level of nodes and distance between each node and sink node which results in selection of the best nodes as a candidate head of cluster nodes. Connectivity of network is also evaluated in the second part of head cluster determination. Therefore, more energy will be stored by determining suitable head clusters and creating balanced clusters in the network and consequently, life of the network increases.

In modern smart building wireless sensors applications are used not only for direct smoke and intruder detection but mainly for structural safety of buildings in non-contact measurement of linear and angular displacement as well as construction vibrations. This very important area of applications enforces the search for new and better technologies to their miniaturization, in a first place with elimination of batteries. This aspect is extremely significant in harsh environmental conditions for vibration monitoring of concreted structure. Polymer composite material for magnetoelectric (ME) transformer consisting of a mixture of piezoelectric and the magnetostrictive material in a polyamide matrix (polymer with amid bond) was manufactured for this application and has been tested in an AC magnetic field. The mechanical tensions created from reoriented ferromagnetic domains generate a voltage at the electrodes surfaces due to the piezoelectric effect via tensions transmitted by polyamide matrix. Measurements of these transformation coefficients is carried out by a bridge technique on the basis of the amplitude and phase impedance characteristics. Finally it was demonstrated that the practical application of the created composite can be ME Transformer for voltage generations in wireless sensor network systems.

Opis:
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology has grown in importance in recent years. All WSN implementations need secure data transmission between sensor nodes and base stations. Sensor node attacks introduce new threats to the WSN. As a result, an appropriate Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is required in WSN for defending against security attacks and detecting attacks on sensor nodes. In this study, we use the Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) for addressing security services in WSN by identifying IDS with a network size of more or less 20 nodes and introducing 10% malicious nodes. The method described above is used on Cooja in the VMware virtual machine Workstation with the InstantContiki2.7 operating system. To track the movement of nodes, find network attacks, and spot dropped packets during IDS in WSN, an algorithm is implemented in the Network Simulator (NS2) using the Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) protocol in the Linux operating system.

Opis:
The data aggregation process of wireless sensor networks faces serious security problems. In order to defend the internal attacks launched by captured nodes and ensure the reliability of data aggregation, a secure data aggregation mechanism based on constrained supervision is proposed for wireless sensor network, which uses the advanced LEACH clustering method to select cluster heads. Then the cluster heads supervise the behaviors of cluster members and evaluate the trust values of nodes according to the communication behavior, data quality and residual energy. Then the node with the highest trust value is selected as the supervisor node to audit the cluster head and reject nodes with low trust values. Results show that the proposed mechanism can effectively identify the unreliable nodes, guarantee the system security and prolong the network life time.

The failure rate of sensor nodes in Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks is high due to the use of low battery-powered sensor nodes in a hostile environment. In this paper, we propose a network partition recovery solution called Grey Wolf, which is an optimizer algorithm for repairing segmented heterogeneous wireless sensor networks. The proposed solution provides not only strong bi-connectivity in the damaged area, but also distributes traffic load among the multiple deployed nodes to enhance the repaired network’s lifetime. The experiment results show that the Grey Wolf algorithm offers a considerable performance advantage over other state-of-the-art approaches.

The paper presents a circuit structure that can be used for powering an IoT (Internet of Things) sensor node and that can use energy just from its surroundings. The main advantage of the presented solution is its very low cost that allows mass applicability e.g. in the IoT smart grids and ubiquitous sensors. It is intended for energy sources that can provide enough voltage but that can provide only low currents such as piezoelectric transducers or small photovoltaic panels (PV) under indoor light conditions. The circuit is able to accumulate energy in a capacitor until a certain level and then to pass it to the load. The presented circuit exhibits similar functionality to a commercially available EH300 energy harvester (EH). The paper compares electrical properties of the presented circuit and the EH300 device, their form factors and costs. The EH circuit’s performance is tested together with an LTC3531 buck-boost DC/DC converter which can provide constant voltage for the following electronics. The paper provides guidelines for selecting an optimal capacity of the storage capacitor. The functionality of the solution presented is demonstrated in a sensor node that periodically transmits measured data to the base station using just the power from the PV panel or the piezoelectric generator. The presented harvester and powering circuit are compact part of the sensor node’s electronics but they can be also realized as an external powering module to be added to existing solutions.

Bezprzewodowe sieci sensoryczne - BSS (ang. wireless sensor network - WSN) są coraz częściej stosowane do obserwowania czynników środowiskowych (zastosowania militarne i cywilne).

Trust plays an important role in human life environments. That is why the researchers has been focusing on it for a long time. It allows us to delegate tasks and decisions to an appropriate person. In social sciences trust between humans was studied, but it also was analyzed in economic transactions. A lot of computer scientists from different areas, like security, semantic web, electronic commerce, social networks tried to transfer this concept to their domains. Trust is an essential factor in any kind of network, whether social or computer. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are characterized by severely constrained resources, they have limited power supplies, low transmission bandwidth, small memory sizes and limited energy, therefore security techniques used in traditional wired networks cannot be adopted directly. Some effort has been expended in this fields, but the concept of trust is defined in slightly different ways by different researchers. In this paper we will show how the family of Role-based Trust management languages (RT) can be used in WSN. RT is used for representing security policies and credentials in decentralized, distributed access control systems. A credential provides information about the privileges of users and the security policies issued by one or more trusted authorities.

Opis:
Energy consumption is one of the major challenges in wireless sensor networks, thus necessitating an approach for its minimization and for load balancing data. The network lifetime ends with the death of one of its nodes, which, in turn, causes energy depletion in and partition of the network. Furthermore, the total energy consumption of nodes depends on their location; that is, because of the loaded data, energy discharge in the nodes close to the base station occurs faster than other nodes, the model presented here, through using learning automata, selects the path appropriate for data transferring; the selected path is rewarded or penalized taking the reaction of surrounding paths into account. We have used learning automata for energy management in finding the path; the routing protocol was simulated by NS2 simulator; the lifetime, energy consumption and balance in an event-driven network in our proposed method were compared with other algorithms.

This article provides an overview of the existing problems in the construction of wireless sensor networks (WSN), in particular the problem of energy efficiency of the system. In many cases, the WSN is set in places where the connection to the stationary power sources is difficult or impossible. Such situations require the use of autonomous energy sources: traditional (batteries) or alternative (solar panels, wind generators, etc.). Due to limitations in the available system power there is obvious need in efficient use of available energy resources.

Opis:
With an explosive growth of wireless sensor networks (WSN), many of their features and applications have become important. Localization of sensor nodes is one of the most important problems in WSN whose accuracy has a very large impact on its performance. Global positioning system (GPS) is a well-known and powerful way which differentiates methods of its use on each node individually. But, because of high energy consuming and processing GPS, it is inappropriate for WSNs. Different algorithms are suggested to overcome the consumed cost of GPS by putting GPS on only some nodes instead of all nodes in the network for localization. So, for nodes localization, just a number of nodes exploit GPS and, they can help other nodes of network in localization via distribution of their coordinates. The use of a mobile robot to send signals to coordinate the target node localization is a good idea. The mobile robot should move in the right path and can localize node more accurately at lower cost. This paper proposes a new method to localize all nodes through some localized nodes based on graph theory in a tree and network topology. The proposed method provides better performance at the cost of accuracy and the number of nodes that can be made up of local consumption.

Wireless Sensor Networks have played a great role in various application domains like environmental tracking for precision agriculture, structural health monitoring, patient health monitoring, intrusion detection, earthquake or volcano prediction and industrial monitoring etc. The major design issues to be dealt in Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are its resource constraint nature, limited network lifetime and scalability. The most stringent of all is energy consumption and battery life which actually limits the network lifetime. This paper presents various energy aware location based routing protocols and in depth comparison based on various characteristics such as routing selection method, data aggregation, routing metrics, periodic message type, scalability, energy efficiency, robustness, event/query based and strengths.

Opis:
In this paper a summary is given of the ongoing research at the Belgian Royal Military Academy in the field of mobile ad hoc networks in general and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in particular. In this study, all wireless sensor networks are based on the physical and the medium access layer of the IEEE 802.15.4 low rate wireless personal area networks standard. The paper gives a short overview of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard in the beaconless mode together with a description of the sensor nodes and the software used throughout this work. The paper also reports on the development of a packet sniffer for IEEE 802.15.4 integrated in wireshark. This packet sniffer turns out to be indispensable for debugging purposes. In view of future applications on the wireless network, we made a theoretical study of the effective data capacity and compared this with measurements performed on a real sensor network. The differences between measurements and theory are explained. In case of geograph- ically meaningful sensor data, it is important to have a knowledge of the relative position of each node. In the last part of the paper we present some experimental results of positioning based on the received signal strength indicators (RSSI). As one could expect, the accuracy of such a method is poor, even in a well controlled environment. But the method has some potential.

Opis:
Ad hoc networks are the ultimate technology in wireless communication that allow network nodes to communicate without the need for a fixed infrastructure. The paper addresses issues associated with control of data transmission in wireless sensor networks (WSN) - a popular type of ad hoc networks with stationary nodes. Since the WSN nodes are typically battery equipped, the primary design goal is to optimize the amount of energy used for transmission. The energy conservation techniques and algorithms for computing the optimal transmitting ranges in order to generate a network with desired properties while reducing sensors energy consumption are discussed and compared through simulations. We describe a new clustering based approach that utilizes the periodical coordination to reduce the overall energy usage by the network.

Wireless sensor network localization is a complex problem that can be solved using different types of methods and algorithms. Nowadays, it is a popular research topic. What becomes obvious is that there are several criteria which are essential when we consider wireless sensor networks. Our objective is to determine accurate estimates of nodes location under the constraints for hardware cost, energy consumption and computation capabilities. In this paper the application of stochastic optimization for performing localization of nodes is discussed. We describe two phase scheme that uses a combination of the trilateration method, along with the simulated annealing optimization algorithm. We investigate two variants of our technique, i.e., centralized and distributed. The attention is paid to the convergence of our algorithm for different network topologies and trade-off between its efficiency and localization accuracy.
