Opis:: In this paper, the design and analysis of a compact size coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed antenna for ultrawideband (UWB) applications is presented. The antenna has a compact size of 20×20×1.1 .5 .mm and provides a good impedance matching over the entire bandwidth of 3.2–14.3 GHz. The characteristics parameters, i.e. return loss, VSWR and radiation pattern, are analyzed using HFSS 11.0 software.

Opis:: Together with the rise of importance of devices employing wireless networks based on the principle of radio frequency data transfers, also the discussion on harmfulness of the electromagnetic radiation has occurred. The authors of this paper obviously cannot provide unambiguous answers to stop this discussion. On the other way, they can provide the reader of this paper with real data obtained by measurements processed inside a semi anechoic chamber that were performed at several wireless alarm peripherals. The measured values are compared to the technical and hygienic standards so the reader can form an idea of the amount of the radiated energy. Moreover, examples of waterfall diagrams of spectra generated by the devices are also listed in this paper.

Opis:: Wireless endoscopic capsules can transmit the picture of the inside of the digestive tract to the external receiver for the purpose of gastrointestinal diseases diagnose. The localization of the capsule is needed to correlate the picture of detected anomalies with the particular fragment of intestine. For this purpose, the analysis of wireless transmission parameters can be applied. Such methods are affected by the impact of the human body on the electromagnetic wave propagation that is specific to the anatomy of individual person. The article presents the algorithm of localization of endoscopic capsules with wireless transmitter based on the detection of phase difference of received signals. The proposed algorithm uses simplified human body models that can change their dielectric properties in each iteration to improve the location of the capsule endoscope. Such approach allows to reduce localization error by around 12 mm (15%) and can by used for patients of different physique without the need of the numerical models of individual body.

Opis:: A compact planner patch ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna is presented in this paper. The antenna configuration consists of a spectacles-shaped patch and a slotted ground plane. Different parameters are investigated for improving the antenna’s properties and for achieving the preferred UWB band (3.1–10.6 GHz). The experimental and simulated results demonstrate that the proposed antenna acquires an operating bandwidth of 117% (3–11.5 GHz) with a stable omnidirectional radiation pattern, about 89% of average radiation efficiency and 4.2 dBi of average gain with the maximum of 5.7 dBi at 10.2 GHz.

Opis:: Wireless system for radiometric measurements contains probes, for gamma radiation measurements and other probes for radon concentration measurements in air and water. The probes have the form of droplet-tight cylinders powered from a local battery. Measuring data collecting unit, based on a portable computer, communicates directly with the probes in a wireless manner using the WiFi communication network, or through the internet using mobile phone GSM network. Serial port wire connection is also possible. The local battery ensures at least 14 days of continuous operation of the probes. For long term measurements, the probes can also be powered from solar panels. Construction and operation of the probes are described. Results of scintillation probes investigation are given. Detection efficiency of the developed probes is comparable with the laboratory probes offered in our country.

Opis:: In the last decade a new idea has been suggested for receivers of communication systems, namely, in microwave receivers’ architecture. Though superheterodyne radio-frequency receivers are best suited to the needs of contemporary wireless communication, however stray radiation of their local oscillator (heterodyne) interferes with neighboring radio-devices and permits to locate the covert receiver. To overcome this drawback the signal transfer to optical range has been suggested. By this conversion, not only an elimination of receiver’s stray radiation is attained but also vast advantages of photonic signal processing become available. The key element of existing microwave-photonic receivers is electro-optical microdisk modulator. However, its realization is complicated and as an alternative an electro-optical modulator based on high Q-factor Fabry-Perot microresonator is suggested. Comparative analysis of both types of modulators is performed, and advantages of high Q-factor Fabry-Perot microresonator based modulator are highlighted.

Opis:: The realistic wireless channels face combined (time shared) Nakagami-lognormal shadowing and unshadowing fading because of time varying nature of radio channel and mobile user. These channels can be modeled as time-shared sum of multipath-shadowing and unshadowing Rician distributions. These fading create severe problems in long distance wireless systems where multipath fading is superim-posed on shadowing fading (called multipath-shadowing fading). The multipath effect can be modeled using Rayleigh, Rician, Nakagami-m or Weibull distribution and shadowing effect is modeled using lognormal distribution. In this paper, authors present a new closed-form probability distribution function of a Nakagami-lognormal fading channel. Using this result, the closed-form expression of combined Nakagami-lognormal shadowing and unshadowing fading is presented. The obtained closed-form result facilitates to derive the important performance metrics of a communication system such as amount of fading, outage probability, and average channel capacity in closed-form expressions.

Opis:: A system for measurements of particulate matter in the ambient air, employing beta absorption instrument AMIZ-2007 with wireless communication facilities based on GPRS technology, is presented. Uncertainty of measurements caused by the counting statistics was analyzed and it was found that at least 3 h of sampling time is needed to achieve coefficient of variation lower than 20% for the average concentration of particulate matter in the ambient air exceeding 10 μg/m3. Application of a C-14 beta ray source instead of Pm-147 improves sensitivity of the measurement ca. two times. Some results of on-line operation of the system with PM10 and PM2.5 samplers are also shown.

Opis:: In a modern urban organization, mobility is an important issue for society. Traffic congestion of urban roads undermines mobility is a real problem in major cities This article shows the development and implementation of a centralized traffic control system in the city of Cali Valle (Colombia) applied to control traffic lights located to the east of the city (Simon Bolivar and Ciudad de Cali highways), allowing the central operators directly influence the traffic flow, know and display the status of the lights and generate statistics about the events of the online equipment. Particular real benefits of proposed new system of traffic lights are reflected in green times at each intersection allocated in accordance with the present traffic volumes on the road network at any time of day and in every sector of the city in particular, which of course increases the efficiency of each light installed at each intersection. As demonstrated in this article case study, the congestion scheme has been improved, and the project has opened up vast opportunities for innovative network management strategies for the optimization of network performance. Many of these strategies are developed to give a coordinated high-level control across different traffic control platforms based on real time traffic condition and performance on site.

Opis:: Cognitive radio (CR) technology is considered to be an effective solution for enhancing overall spectrum efficiency. Using CR technology fully involves the providing of incentives to Primary Radio Networks (PRNs) and revenue to the service provider so that Secondary Base Stations (SBSs) may utilize PRN spectrum bands accordingly. In this paper, a cooperative games with incomplete information for SBSs in a CR network is presented. Each SBS can cooperate with neighboring SBSs in order to improve its view of the spectrum. Moreover, proposed game-theory models assume that the devices have incomplete information about their components, meaning that some players do not completely know the structure of the game. Using the proposed algorithm, each SBS can leave or join the coalition while maximizing its overall utility. The simulation results illustrate that the proposed algorithm allows us to reduce the average payoff per SBS up to 140% relative to a CR network without cooperation among SBSs.

Opis:: Jednym z podstawowych problemów współczesnej robotyki jest określenie położenia, zwane także lokalizacją. Rozwój techniki przyniósł wiele różnych sposobów wykonywania tej czynności, lecz systemy te mają wciąż wiele ograniczeń. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono system lokalizacji zaprojektowany na potrzeby zastosowania w robotach mobilnych. Wykorzystywany jest w nim system komunikacji radiowej, a ściślej pomiar mocy odebranego sygnału radiowego do pomiaru odległości. Położenie obiektu mobilnego określane z pomocą trilateracji. Przedstawiona metoda jest uniwersalna i może zostać zastosowana z użyciem większości współczesnych urządzeń radiowych.
One of the major problems of the modern robotics is an estimation of the position, known also as the localization. The development of technology brought lots of different ways of this activity, however, the mentioned systems still have many limitations. The paper mentions a localization system established in order to be used in the mobile robots. The system makes use of radio waves or to be more precise measurement of the received signal strength for the measurement of the distance. The location of the mobile object is defined on the basis of the trilateration. The method presented is highly versatile and can be introduced with use of most of the contemporary radio equipment.

Opis:: Mobile systems, by nature, have finite resources. Radio spectrum is limited, expensive and shared between many users and services. Mobile broadband networks must support multiple applications of voice, video and data on a single IP-based infrastructure. These converged services each have unique traffic holding and quality requirements. A positive user experience must be obtained through efficient partitioning of the available wireless network resources. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has developed a comprehensive Quality of Service (QoS) parameter to address this problem. The regular control of service quality is critical for operators to ensure user Quality of Experience (QoE), establish new business models and monetize services. It enables operators to employ fair-use resource policies and maintain network performance during peak traffic times. Wireless mobile communication is tending towards an integrated system of Internet and telecommunication technologies, where mobile users move freely anytime and everywhere. They desire to communicate with any device using the best service available. In this paper QoS management issues in mobile communication are described. The authors present an insight into subscriber behavior and related factors that affect the QoE of mobile data services.
