Opis:
Growth regulators, or retardants, play a significant rolein the crop protection system, minimizing the risk of lodging. Thephenomenon of lodging contributes to qualitative losses and deteriorationof grain quality. In this paper, the effect of retardanttype, its rate and date of application, on selected quality featuresof winter wheat grain was evaluated. The study was carried out at the IUNG Experimental Stationin Osiny with winter wheat cultivar 'Roma', grown after rootcrops. The experiment was conducted on the soil of the good ryecomplex. The three-year study was conducted using the methodof randomized split-plot with a control treatment, in four replications. The formulas of retardants (Cycocel 460 SL - chlormequatand Terpal C 460 SL - chlormequat + ethephon), application date(full tillering and first and second node stage) and application rate(maximum and minimum recommended by the Institute of PlantProtection) were the test factors. The reaction of wheat to the examined factors depended onthe type, rate and timing of retardant application. Statisticallysignificant differences in grain glassiness, gluten quality and theactivity of amylolytic enzymes, were found vs. the values of thecontrol sample. The application of retardants had no statisticallysignificant effect on grain bulk density, ash content and total proteinand gluten content.

Opis:
Previously (Grzesik 1980) a number of induced mutants with shortened culm increased loging resistance and changed shape of ear and leaves were obtained from winter wheat var. Flevina. Two of the obtained mutants were crossed with the initial variety to study the mode of  inheritance of the mutated traits such as culm length, ear length, grain weight per ear and boat-like leaf shape. The hybrids were sown in experiment with six basic generations: P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1, BC2. The mode of inheritance of the above traits proved to be very complex. Both additive and nonadditive effects of gene action played a significant role. Basing on genetic analysis it can be concluded that a boat-like shape of leaves is determined by two complementary recessive genes.

Opis:
The yield-forming potential of winter wheat is determined by several factors, namely total number of shoots per plant and total number of spikelets per spike. The field experiments were conducted during three vegetation seasons at the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute – National Research Institute (PBAI– NRI), located in Radzików, Poland. The objective of this study was a comparative analysis of the structural yield-forming factor levels, which determine grain yield per spike and per plant of the DH lines and standard Izolda cultivar. Results indicate that several DH lines showed some differences in tested morphological structures of plant, yield factor levels and in grain yield per spike and per plant in comparison to standard Izolda, regardless of the year. Mean grain yield per plant of DH lines was 26.5% lower in comparison to standard Izolda only in the second year of study. It was caused by a reduction of productive tillers number. Structural yield-forming potential of DH lines was used in 38% and 59% and in case of Izolda in 47% and 61% (the second and the third year of experiment, respectively). The mean grain yield per spike of DH lines was 14.8% lower than Izolda cultivar only in third year of experiment and it was caused by about 12% lower number of grains per spike. Structural yield-forming potential of DH spikes was used in 82.4%, 85.4% and 84.9% and in case of Izolda in 83.8%, 87% and 89.5% (the first, the second and the third year of experiment, respectively). The grain yield per winter wheat plant (both DH lines and standard Izolda) was significantly correlated with the number of productive tillers per plant (r = 0.80). The grain yield per winter wheat spike (both DH lines and Izolda cultivar) was significantly and highly correlated with the number of grains per spike (r = 0.96), number of fertile spikelets per spike (r = 0.87) and the spike length (r = 0.80). Variation of spike and plant structural yield-forming factors determining grain yield levels were also analyzed. Calculated total variation coefficients values of each analyzed trait during three-year long studies were different depending on plant material – DH lines or standard Izolda. Low variation coefficients values characterized following traits (traits ranked by increasing values for DH lines and standard Izolda, respectively): total spikelets number per spike (6.6 and 6.3%), spike length (11.1 and 12.6%), fertile spikelets number per spike (13.7 and 11.7%), single grain weight (15.0 and 12.2%), shoot length (16.2 and 13.3%), grains number per spikelet (26.4 and 23.3%), total shoots number per plant (23.4 and 29.6%), grains number per spike (30.1 and 28.2%). Higher variation coefficients values were obtained for the following traits: grain yield per spike (40.0 and 35.7%), plant immature tillers number (35.8 and 42.6%), plant productive tillers number (42.2 and 43.2%), spike sterile spikelets number (46.6 and 44.7%) and number of grains per plant (58.3 and 60.5%). The highest values characterized grain yield per plant (66.9 and 60.8%).

Opis:
Gene postulation is one of the fastest and most cost-effective methods for identifying seed- ling leaf rust resistance genes in wheat cultivars. Many researchers use this approach to identify Lr genes in wheat cultivars. The purpose of our research was to identify seedling leaf rust resistance genes in 20 wheat cultivars from different breeding centers of Russia, Ukraine and Germany. Forty-two near isogenic Thatcher lines and 10 Puccinia triticina isolates were used for gene postulation. When assessing the infection types to cultivars and lines, a scale was used, according to Oelke and Kolmer. In 20 wheat cultivars 19 Lr genes were postulated: 2c, 3, 10, 3bg, 3ka, 14a, 17, 18, 23, 25, 26, 30, 33, 40, 44, 50, B, Exch, Kanred. The most common for cultivars was the Lr10 gene. In five cultivars, showing high field resistance, most postulated seedling genes (Lr2c, Lr3, Lr10, Lr14а, Lr26, Lr33) were not effective in the adult stage. It is possible that resistance of such cultivars is associated with APR genes, the postulation of which requires an expansion in the number and spectrum of P. triticina isolate virulence. Most of the studied cultivars (60%) have recently been en- tered into the register (2015–2019) and in the field show a stable or moderately susceptible response to P. triticina infection, despite the fact that the Lr genes postulated in them were not effective in the adult stage. The data obtained indicated a variety of genotypes of the studied cultivars, as well as the tendency of breeders to use the effect of pyramiding ineffec- tive genes, which can prolong the resistance of the cultivar. Annual monitoring of varieties is necessary in each region, especially when reacting with a medium susceptible type (MS), which may indicate the initial stage of resistance loss.

Opis:
Redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L). is a broadleaf weed in autumn crop fields in Russia. Four field experiments were performed in Stalskiy region, southern Russia in two growing seasons, 2016 and 2017, to investigate the effects of postemergence applications of applied alone or in tank mixtures in winter wheat cultivars Tanya and Bagrat. Redroot pigweed control was greatest with tribenuron and all herbicide treatments containing tribenuron. The lowest redroot pigweed control was with aminopyralid/florasulam (study 1) and triasulfuron (study 2), respectively, whereas redroot pigweed had intermediate responses to the other examined herbicides. Tribenuron plus fluroxypyr sprayed on wheat cultivar ‘Tanya’, and tribenuron plus triasulfuron on wheat cultivar ‘Bagrat’ resulted in increased wheat grain yields. Overall, tribenuron and herbicides containing tribenuron provided the most efficient redroot pigweed control compared with the other herbicides and consistently maintained optimal winter wheat yields. Tribenuron could ameliorate redroot resistance to herbicides in wheat fields in southern Russia.

Opis:
An experiment, conducted over the period 2008–2010, evaluated the effect of tillage system on the occurrence and species composition of anthropophytes in winter wheat, maize and spring wheat. Regardless of crop plant and tillage system, anthropophytes (73.9%), represented by archaeophytes and kenophytes, were the main component of the flora in the crops studied, whereas apophytes accounted for the remaining 26.1%. Most archaeophytes (13 species) were found in the spring wheat crop under no-tillage, while their lowest number (6 species) occurred in the spring wheat crop under conventional tillage. The only kenophyte, Conyza canadensis, was found to occur in the spring wheat and maize crops in the no-tillage system. The following taxa were dominant species among archeophytes: Geranium pusillum, Anthemis arvensis, and Viola arvensis (regardless of tillage system and crop plant), Anthemis arvensis (in spring wheat – conventional tillage), Echinochloa crus-galli and Setaria glauca (in maize – reduced tillage and no-tillage), Chenopodium album (in maize – no-tillage) as well as Apera spica-venti, Anthemis arvensis and Papaver rhoeas (in winter wheat – no-tillage).
W obrębie archeofitów gatunkami dominującymi były następujące taksony: Geranium pusillum, Anthemis arvensis i Viola arvensis (niezależnie od sposobu uprawy roli i rośliny uprawnej), Anthemis arvensis (w pszenicy jarej – uprawa tradycyjna), Echinochloa crus-galli i Setaria glauca (w kukurydzy – uprawa uproszczona i zerowa), Chenopodium album (w kukurydzy – uprawa zerowa) oraz Apera spica-venti, Anthemis arvensis i Papaver rhoeas (w pszenicy ozimej – uprawa zerowa).

The paper presents results of a plot experiment with 20 varieties of winter wheat artificially infested with Tilletia caries (DC.) Tul. Significant differences in susceptibility of varieties to the pathogen were found. Percentage of diseased ears ranged from 0.75 to 20.00, the least infected were varieties Begra, Elena, Juma and Gama. Percentage of grain yield decrease, as compared to non-infected control, was the highest for varieties Maltanka, Kobra, Wilga, Zorza and Kamila. In most cases grain yield decrease of varieties was related to the percentage of diseased ears found on experimental plots with these varieties.
Do najsłabiej porażonych należały odmiany: Berga, Elena, Juma i Gama.
