Opis:
This paper proposes a fault tolerant control scheme based on an unknown input observer for a wind turbine system subject to an actuator fault and disturbance. Firstly, an unknown input observer for state estimation and fault detection using a linear parameter varying model is developed. By solving linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and linear matrix equalities (LMEs), the gains of the unknown input observer are obtained. The convergence of the unknown input observer is also analysed with Lyapunov theory. Secondly, using fault estimation, an active fault tolerant controller is applied to a wind turbine system. Finally, a simulation of a wind turbine benchmark with an actuator fault is tested for the proposed method. The simulation results indicate that the proposed FTC scheme is efficient.

Opis:
This paper describes the method of model-free fault detection and isolation. The main purpose of the research is to present one possibility of the development of diagnostic schemes for which the component structure and behavioural parameters are tuned automatically in order to obtain the maximal efficiency of the fault detection and isolation system. The proposed approach can be viewed as the intersection of elementary methods (classic and soft computing) such as discrete wavelet analysis, machine learning (using decision trees or artificial neural networks), and evolutionary algorithms. The fundamental verification of the method was conducted for data made available within the benchmark problem involving a wind turbine. The achieved results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach while also showing its limitations.
Artykuł opisuje metodę detekcji i izolacji uszkodzeń bez użycia modelu.

The aim of this paper is to confirm the thesis that by the usage of laser scanning methods it is possible to find a link confirming the characteristics of swampy land on which the specific building projects are supposed to be carried, as well as their requirements in high accuracy of location and the stability and durability of the substrate. Visible to the naked eye, regular depressions in the ground may foretell the places of underground space, created or influenced by the flow of water or due to geological structures, characterizing the substrate as inconsistent. These spaces seriously affect the possibility of placing wind turbines. By using LIDAR high correlation is visible between the characteristics of the terrain model and the location of underground geological spaces that could endanger the constructions that will be formed in the area. While the construction is being built the ground emphasizes so much that wrong location can simply cause the collapse of the structure. The results were supported with geophysical researches, using three methods: ERT - electrical resistivity tomography, GPR - ground penetrating radar, and the seismic method.

Opis:
Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems have recently become ubiquitous in wind energy technology. SCADA data analysis actually can provide considerable performance improvement at low cost. This also boosts wind energy exploitation, because it enlarges short and long term economic sustainability of investments. Nevertheless, SCADA data analysis poses several scientific and technological challenges, mostly related to the vastness of the data sets required for significant analysis. Separating the signal from the noise is therefore a complex task. In the present work, this issue is tackled by the point of view of state dynamics of wind turbines. SCADA control systems often record superabundant and ambiguous information. Therefore, in this work it is shown that hierarchical classification of information and time discretization of the continuous motion of states are powerful tools. The time-discretized state dynamics is processed in the formulation of several indices for performance evaluation and fault diagnosis. The method is tested on the data set of a wind farm owned by Renvico s.r.l. and sited in Italy.

Opis:
Wind turbines, due to the distribution of the source, are an energy conversion system having low density on the territory, whose operational behaviour and production on the short term strongly depends on the stochastic nature of wind. They therefore need accurate assessment prior installation and careful condition monitoring in the operative phase. In the present work, smart post processing of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) control system data sets is employed for fault prevention and diagnosis through the analysis of the temperatures of the machines. Automatic routines are developed for monitoring the evolution of all the temperature SCADA channels against power production. The methods are tested on an onshore wind farm sited in southern Italy, where nine turbines with 2 MW rated power are installed. The tests are performed both ex post and in real time: it is shown that in the former case, a major mechanical problem is detected, and in the latter case a significant problem to the cooling system is identified before compromising turbine functionality.

Opis:
In the paper authors presented an innovative design of the transportable horizontal axis wind turbine with a capacity of 3.5 kW, which can be use generally in hard field conditions. Simple, lightweight, and inexpensive design gives wide possibilities of its effective use. The self-adjusting system with the turbine protection against exceeding the speed limit ensures practically maintenance-free operation. The self-adjusting system provides continuous setting of the wind turbine on the wind direction, and at the same time protects of the main rotor HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine) against excessive speed in strong winds. This solution can replace the most commonly used solution like the directional rudder or the auxiliary wind motor, which usually requires using the generator rotor brake, because works without negative impact to the wind turbine (a low gyroscopic torque) and does not require additional electric power from outside. The use of ballast in exchange for the existing installation of the mast support structure to the foundation makes the project of the wind turbine proposed by the authors more transportable. The design a wind turbine with low power, which can be easily assembled, leave to exploitation, disassembled and then transported to the new place of work without anchoring to the foundation which are permanently linked with a ground become the main goal of the work.

Opis:
Optimal alignment of wind turbines to the wind direction is a crucial condition for the quality of power output and for the health of the turbines. Actually, bad alignment can cause degraded performances and dangerous loads that can affect, on the long run, the mechanical safety of the wind turbine. Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are becoming widespread in modern wind energy technology because of the appreciable costs – benefits ratio. The common time scale of SCADA, yet, usually is not effective for misalignment diagnosis because the wind varies too rapidly. For this reason, misalignment is often diagnosed using ad hoc techniques as LIDAR-based or spinner anemometers. In the present work, it is shown that very useful indications for the diagnosis of misalignment can be obtained also from the SCADA data, without invoking expensive supplementary control techniques. The method is validated on the data set of a wind farm sited in Italy.

The wind power which has been expected to be a promising alternative energy source can bring new challenges when it is connected to the power grid due to the fluctuation nature of the wind and the comparatively new types of its generators. This paper illustrates a possible solution to mitigate these integration issues of the wind power by application of the energy storage to the wind farm in power systems focusing on its short-duration perspective. The simulation model for the Energy Storage System (ESS) connected to the wind farm is implemented using the Power System Simulator for Engineering(PSS/E) which is one of the most widely used program for the power system analysis in US. Employing a sample power system, the control effect of the ESS for mitigating the wind generation related power quality issues by suppressing the power flow fluctuation of the wind farm, and improving power system stability is validated. The counteracting effect of the ESS in the wind farm to the disturbance on the grid is also shown.

Opis:
The grid integration of large-scale wind power will alter the dynamic characteristics of the original system and the power distribution among synchronous machines. Meanwhile, the interaction between wind turbines and synchronous machines will affect the damping oscillation characteristics of the system. The additional damping control of traditional synchronous generators provides an important means for wind turbines to enhance the damping characteristics of the system. To improve the low frequency oscillation characteristics of wind power grid-connected power systems, this paper adds a parallel virtual impedance link to the traditional damping controller and designs a DFIG-PSS-VI controller. In the designed controller, the turbine active power difference is chosen as the input signal based on residual analysis, and the output signal is fed back to the reactive power control loop to obtain the rotor voltage quadrature component. With DigSILENT/PowerFactory, the influence of the controller parameters is analyzed. In addition, based on different tie-line transmission powers, the impact of the controller on the low-frequency oscillation characteristics of the power system is examined through utilizing the characteristic root and time domain simulation analysis.

Opis:
In renewable systems, there may be conditions that can be either network error or power transmission line and environmental conditions such as when the wind speed is unbalanced and the wind turbine is connected to the grid. In this case, the control system is not damaged and will remain stable in the power transmission system. Voltage stability studies on an independent wind turbine at fault time and after fixing the error is one of the topics that can strengthen the future of independent collections. At the time of the fault, the network current increases dramatically, resulting in a higher voltage drop. Hence the talk of fast voltage recovery during error and after fixing the error and protection of rotor and grid side converters against the fault current and also protection against rising DC voltage (which sharply increases during error) is highly regarded. So, several improvements have been made to the construction of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) turbine such as: a) error detection system, b) DC link protection, c) crow bar circuit, d) block of the rotor and stator side converters, e) injecting reactive power during error, f) nonlinear control design for turbine blades, g) tuning and harmonization of controllers used to keep up the power quality and to stabilize the system output voltage in the power grid. First, the dynamic models of a wind turbine, gearbox, and DFIG are presented. Then the controllers are modeled. The results of the simulation have been validated in MATLAB/Simulink.
