Opis:
Ancient philosophy distinguished three meanings of the notion of freedom: an individual man's freedom of choice and decision, freedom of social-political life and freedom (sovereignty) of the state. This latter meaning was considered the most important form of freedom. In his conception of an “ideal state” Plato advised abolition of private property and monogamy for the political élite (the so called “guards”), which is a feature of a totalitarian state. He distinguished three models of state: monarchic, aristocratic and democratic. He accepted the latter model, but he warned against maximising individual freedom, as it leads to anarchy in social life, which in turn is a source of tyranny. Aristotle appreciated democracy more, as it best puts into effect the postulates of freedom, equality and justice. The other form of freedom, according to his approach, is freedom understood as enabling a man to choose rationally, which should be preceded by reflection. His conception of man's existential freedom (proaíresis) is close to the theory of free will (liberum arbitrium) in the Christian thought. The Stoics concentrated their attention on inner-moral freedom that they identified with the attitude of keeping a distance to man's existential vicissitudes. Some of them (Marcus Aurelius) joined the idea of inner freedom with philosophy of naturalistic pantheism, others (Epictetus) considered God as the source of moral freedom. Plotinus was also mainly interested in man's inner freedom, which he explained in the context of the pantheistic conception of the absolute.

The attitude of the Catholic Church towards this matter has been briefly mentioned in the introduction. The main body of the article presents an attempt of philosophical (realistic) characteristic of the nature of religious meditation. Ontological pluralism and creationism have been found as one of the main metaphisical features of the world. However our main attention has been drawn to the antropological implications of the act of meditation. In the article some works concerning religious meditation written by St. Thomae Aquinatis have been recolled. Not only for reasons however but mainly because of timless, realistic solution given there. Meditation is shown as sensual-intellectual cognitive act when the thruth concerning God and the human being is considered. This truth, of natural and revelled kind, due to sensibilities are expressed in the impressions which have an impact to the intellect for further considerations. Cognitive operations are followed by an appetite constituted in acts of senses and mainly in acts of will. The paper has also shown some further consequences of the obtained results. It has been pointed out that an act of religious meditation cannot be seen as one of difficult to explain structure, relies on drowning in unconceptualized atmosphere of God's presence. On the contrary, religious meditation appears to be a highly rational act, having objective foundations, understable (to some extend) for a human being.

The author claims that neither utility, nor perfection of any object can constitute the essence of good. Utility is the so-called relational attribute, therefore it is variable, and the objects perfect with regard to some respect can be used for bad purposes. Moral virtues also cannot express the essence of good, for their positive character is defined by the fact that they are good. With respect to the scholastic formulation ens et bonum convertuntur, the author says that existence itself, even of the objects perfect to a certain extent, is not good because in the concept of ens scholastics meant the being which is God, and the remaining objects are good inasmuch as they come from God. The scholastic tradition called God good because He created everything according to His good will. Here the author discusses the problem of the universal axiological illusion in the context of the absolute power of God (potestas absoluta). The so-called teleological definition of good (bonum est quod omnia appetunt) is thought to be insufficient, just like the definition that bonum est diffusivum sui. The objection to the first conception says that it understands “good” as an entirely static state of things. In this state all potentialities of an object gain their fulfilment. The second objection, in the spirit of Plotinus’ emanationism, is criticised because it sees good as giving of itself, in which the emanating factor does not participate in its creation. Drawing on some strains of scholastic philosophy and I. Kant, the author formulates a thesis that the essence of good is good will and that God can be called good only then when by creating the world He descends in it (descensio). The God of religion and Christian philosophy fulfils the conditions that determine the essence of good. This is confirmed by the Persons of the Holy Trinity who mutually give Themselves, the creation of finite persons, and the Incarnation. Addressing the problem of evil, the author claims that the only bad thing in the world is bad will. Accordingly, suffering and the so-called natural evil is not evil and the acts of bad will were allowed by God, for otherwise no finite person could know what bad will consists in.

Przedmiotem rozważań jest analiza głównych założeń etyki czci dla życia Alberta Schweitzera, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem trudności, na jakie ona napotyka. Zasadnicza trudność wynika z rozwiązywania dylematów moralnych związanych z realizacji nakazu szacunku dla wszelkich przejawów życia w świecie, w którym życie toczy się z "żoładka do żoładka". Etyka szacunku dla życia, podkreślając moralność autonomii człowieka, każe mu działać wbrew regułom, według, których toczy się życie na Ziemi. Jak zatem pogodzić nieusuwalne zło tego świata z nieustannym obarczaniem ludzkiego sumienia poczuciem winy? Schweitzer uzasadnia etyki czci dla życia przez odwołanie się do metafizycznej woli życia, która wprawdzie jest nie z tego świata, lecz mimo to, stosuje je do świata rzeczywistego. Z tego dualizmu w pojmowaniu życia wywodzą się dylematy moralne jego etyki. Ekofilozofia przezwycięża dualizm Schweitzera w pojmowaniu życia i określa realizację etyki szacunku dla życia w ograniczonym zakresie. W takim zakresie jak to jest możliwe w świecie takim jaki jest.
The subject of this discussion is the analysis of the main assumptions of Albert Schweitzer's ethics of respect for life with emphasis on the difficulties that such ethics faces. The main difficulty lies in the moral dilemmas which result from the implementation of the obligatory respect for all manifestations of life in the world in which life is lead "from stomach to stomach". The ethics of respect for life emphesizes man's moral autonomy and at the same time forces man to live against the rules which govern life on Earth. How can we reconcile the inherent evil of this world with the constant feeling of guilt? Schweitzer justifies the ethics of respect for life by referring to the metaphysical will to life, which is not from this world, but he applies it to the real world. Such dualistic understanding of life gives rise to the moral dilemmas of his ethics. Ecophilosophy may overcome the duality of Schweitzer understanding of life and implements the ethics of respect for life to a limited extent, to an extent which is possible in the world as it is.

There were scientists who believed that the beginning of the universe that cosmology speaks about should be identified with the moment of creation by God. One of them was Edmund Whittaker, who was convinced that the Big Bang provides a kind of scientific proof of the creation 'ex nihilo' and consequently of the existence of God. The present paper gives a short account of his natural theology. In the first chapter, Whittaker's philosophy of mathematics is presented - this is his point of departure: rational and mathematical character of the world is - in his opinion - a source of our knowledge of God. Chapters two and three give an account of Whittaker's natural theology; the stress is put on the Big Bang as a moment of the world's creation. In chapter four, the relevance of cosmology for the understanding of the Five Ways to God of St. Thomas is discussed. The last chapter deals with the problem of determinism and free will as seen by Edmund Whittaker.

Blessed Angela Truszkowska is among the important figures in nineteenth-century Poland. She was a co-founder of the Congregation of Felician Sisters. Her writings testify to her love of Jesus Christ, the Divine Bridegroom and His Church. It is in the Divine Master that Truszkowska had found a sense of religious life, therefore she showed Him as a model of love that did not hesitate to lay down His life and remain under the Eucharistic forms. She encouraged her fellow sisters to fulfil God's will modelled on Christ, and to imitate Him in their whole life. She thought that the consecrated person was called to sanctity and should make every effort to follow Jesus Christ; His words should be radically put into practice in this person's life.

Przyjaźń jest rodzajem związku ludzi, a nie formalnym statusem. Ma charakter indywidualny. Jest pozytywnym przezwyciężeniem, pozytywnym przekształceniem własnej przeszłości. Drugą podstawą przyjaźni jest jej przyszłość, tj. horyzonty, perspektywy, które ona stwarza. Zasadniczym rysem tych perspektyw jest zdolność do stawienia czoła tym problemom, które w innych związkach nie mogły być pozytywnie rozwiązane. Podstawą przyjaźni w teraźniejszości jest szacunek i porozumienie, prowadzące do tworzenia wspólnoty. Warunkiem poszukiwania wspólnoty jest dążenie do równoważności osób, słów, czynów. Tworzy ono odpowiedzialność wzajemną dzięki woli odnajdowania wspólnej miary w traktowaniu świata zewnętrznego wobec poszukujących. W ten sposób odpowiedzialność stwarza możliwość zaistnienia wzajemności. Wspólnota tak powstająca jest zaprzeczeniem wzajemności konwenansowej, opartej o aktualny w społeczeństwie (zbiorowości) „idol rynku”. Wymaga ona ćwiczeń w równowartości aktów wzajemnych.
Friendship is the foremost form of human individual relation, a demanding community of ethical courage and reciprocation of the measure of life in the ethico-existential dimension. The said relation is of autotelic nature, being no substitute for other forms of human co-existence, however it contributes to solving issues insurmountable in other forms of human relations. It opens up the human’s existence to wider dimensions of co-existence and cofeeling. In the human community a man’s development – of an individual and that of a member of the society – is determined by their gradual realization of stable humanistic values, constituting the fundamental criterion of their attitude towards reality. The human closeness and reciprocating the measure of life are the basic features of friendship and community. That makes those qualities compatible both existentially and practically. The abovementioned forms of human existence have to be clearly distinguished from the passing conventional reciprocity, founded on the societally-accepted concept of “the idol of the market”. The relevance of the will to authenticity of the co-existing human beings, finding its expression in practicing equivalency in acts of reciprocity and shaping a mutually adequate measure of life, has to be strongly emphasized.

The main goal of submitted paper is to present the crucial trains of Spinoza’s conception of freedom. The focal point of undertaken analysis aims to demonstrate the originality and uniqueness of Spinoza’s proposal. In first step the different aspects of definition of freedom is examined. This paper focuses on the meaning of the National Synod of Dordrecht (1618-1619) for the history of Calvinism in the Netherlands. The author broadly presents its historical and theological backgrounds and examines the factors that caused this Ecclesiastical Gathering. The National Synod in Dordrecht was held in order to settle a serious controversy in the Dutch churches initiated by the rise of Arminianism. The Arminians (Remonstrants) taught election on the basis of foreseen faith, a universal atonement, resistible grace, and the possibility of lapse from grace. The Synod concluded with a rejection of these views, and set forth the Reformed doctrine on each point, namely: total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and the perseverance of the saints. One more result of the synod’s work was the decision to authorize a new translation of the Bible from the original languages. The new Dutch translation was first published in 1637 and it became known as State Translation (Statenvertaling). It has had an enormous influence in the formation of the Dutch language and the church unity. The National Synod of Dordrecht was absolutely a high point in the early history of the Reformed Church and with it, the Calvinism orthodoxy has been finally established.

The goal of this article is to investigate whether the verb chcieć 'to want' is a definible notion. A. Wierzbicka locates this predicate on her first list of semantic primitives (1972), A. Bogusławski, on the other hand, proposes to decompose this verb into a "feeling a deficit" 1998a). Apart from these references some other proposals are presented. First of all, the author tries to distinguish units withe the shape chcieć based on inflectional and syntactical differences. Several intuitions included in proper definitions taken from contemporary Polish dictionaries are also commented upon (SJPDor, ISJP, USJP). The paper implements as the analytic tool advanced structuralist semantics developed by Bogusławski (see: 1976, 1994, 1998b, 2007, Danielewiczowa 2002, Wajszczuk 1997).

The article discusses a wide range of issues concerning the new legal institution introduced to the Polish legal system by the bill to amend the Polish Civil Code –i.e. “specific bequest”. The bill introduced a specific bequest alongside the current ordinary bequest. The item in question – which could take the form of personalty, an alienable property right, an enterprise or agricultural farm, or usufruct or a servitude– will go to the named legatee as soon as the estate enters probate. Thanks to this new institution testator will be able to assign a specific item of his property to a specific person (heir or not). For the agricultural law doctrine the most important issue concerning the institution of specific bequest is the fact that its item can be “agricultural farm”. In this way the notion of “agricultural farm” – central institution of rural law – has been introduced to the general provisions of inheritance law and, therefore, its importance has been strongly valorized. On the other hand, however, new regulations create a great number of serious doubts and problems which can easily put in question its practical importance. These problems have been divided in the paper in two basic groups. The first group concerns so–called “technical” problems. The most important one is the question of describing the agricultural farm in the notarial will, taking into account the doctrinal postulate of its maximal specification and substantiation as well as unification of descriptions in will and in the court’s ruling confirming the rights to the item of specific bequest. This problem should be analyzed with respect to the social – economic fact that agricultural farm only very rarely is the item of the property right. Usually, it is complicated construction consisting of different items and rights which do not have to be owned by the farmer. The second group of problems examined in the article was called “political issues”. In this part of paper Author tries to prove that the institution of specific bequest does not ensure satisfactory level of protection for the agricultural farm. Firstly, this legal instrument enables unqualified heirs access to the farm. Secondly, it can provoke the unreasonable partition of the farm. Moreover, it can also occur dangerous to the economic basis of the farm, regarding the fact that legatees are severally liable for heritable debts and can be also liable to certain statutory heirs. With respect to above–mentioned arguments, the strong need of the suitable legal institution – which would facilitate the generational changes in the agricultural farms – is to be stressed.

Stanowi istotne źródło do badania życia codziennego i stanu ekonomicznego zamożnej warstwy kupców żydowskich w Królestwie Polskim w drugiej połowie XIX wieku. Dokument jest również dobrym narzędziem do zbadania oficjalnego trybu realizacji testamentu Berka Wejjsa.
The analyzed source, the will of one of the richest Jews of the Lublin province, is a unique notary act. It is an exceptional source for the study of everyday life and economic conditio of wealthy class of Jewish traders in the Kingdom of Poland in the second half of the 1800s. Opis:
Currently, when the need to overcome logocentric metaphysics has become necessity in the many philosophical trends, the role of the German philosopher seems particularly important. The Friedrich Nietzsche’s project is full of contradictions; in addition to statements denouncing the cultural heritage of the West, it has also positive theses, which cannot be agreed with the work of a “suspicious investigator”. These are: the affirmation of the world postulates and the concept of new values, in relation to the phenomenon of life. In the article contradictions of concepts “will to power” and “superman” are showed, next I propose the different reading of Nietzsche’s work with reference to Pierre Kossowski’s thought. Therefore the main purposes of my text is to show aporias of Nietzsche’s ideas and to outline its post-structuralist interpretation made by Klossowski.
