Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present the selected types of rail wheel wear and their influence on vehicle-track interaction. The first part discusses the wheel-rail interface and presents the essential information about the wear of rail vehicle wheels. Differences in the nature of the wear of rail and tram wheels are pointed out. Then, characteristics of typical forms of wheel wear are presented, together with the description of the mechanisms of their occurrence and the existing technical measures leading to their reduction. In the last part of the text, the impact of the previously described forms of wheel wear on the vehicle-track interaction is discussed.

Opis:
The objective of this paper is focused on the computer modelling and dynamic simulation of a coach with damaged wheel and the assessment of these negative effects on a track. The article is composed of two parts. Firstly, problems about the operation of rolling stocks with damaged wheels are described. There are also mentioned diagnostic systems installed on a track for detection and assessment their negative impacts on a track. The second part of the article is dedicated to computer modelling of a coach running on a railway track with the damaged wheel, in this case with the wheel-flat. For these purposes the virtual model of a coach were created. After simulations of its running there were performed analyses needed for the evaluation of its negative impacts on a railway track.

Opis:
This paper presents an insight into mathematical analysis of dynamic models of the vehicle–track system. After identification of its advantages and disadvantages, an improved three-dimensional "vehicle–track" system of a mathematical model is presented. It not only assesses the influence of realistic track irregularities but also on all elements of the railway structure: rail, rail pads, sleepers, ballasts, and subballast parameters on the wagon’s movement smoothness. Based on the expanded mathematical model of the “vehicle–track” dynamic system, the dynamic process of the wagon was theoretically studied, and the effect of track with irregularities on the vibrations of the wagon elements was studied. The final conclusions and recommendations are presented.

Opis:
One of the most essential threats to the mobility of wheeled vehicles is their relatively high sensitivity to tire damage. Tires can be damaged as a result at vehicle-targeting fire, after running on a mine or an improvised charge. The purpose of the article is to analyze the current technical solutions in wheeled vehicle tires, allowing for the unobstructed use of the vehicle despite the damage of one or several tires (RUN FLAT systems). Since RUN FLAT systems have become increasingly popular in passenger cars as well, the article contains partial references to civilian solutions. One should remember that RUN FLAT systems are not only to guarantee vehicle mobility following the loss of pressure in the tire in straight-line motion, but also crew safety providing sufficient driving level and stability at longer distances. The article presents solutions of this type, applied not only in military vehicles, but also considers research-structural works implemented by ROSOMAK S.A. in cooperation with other centres. The works presented in this article were financed by ROSOMAK S.A. and National Research and Development Centre (NCBiR) (project SPB – RolRes, agreement no PBS1/A6/1/2012).

Opis:
The work presents research of defective railway wheel and rail dynamics and mathematical model of system “Railway vehicle wheel – track”. An assumption was made that the Rail R–65 and railway wheel with flats are with unevenness. The aim of this investigation is to identify the contact forces resulting from the wheel/rail contact at the various defects. Rail track dynamics is described by finite element method, while soil and wagon dynamics is described by the discrete elements. The mathematical model is to assess physical and mechanical properties, roughness of wheel and rail surface, and their geometry. In the mathematical model of the rail is evaluated: the impact of axial force, the initial deformation of rail, the foundation of soil, the gap between sleeper and rail. Profile of railway wheel is defined as a function of radius variable depending on the polar angle and described by Fourier series. In this mathematical model of railway wheel and rail contact area is divided into small sections, where the force is set in contact using the Hertz theory. Total system of non-linear equations of motion is solved by applying the Newton-Raphson method. The speed of the train is 100 km/h and static load on the rail is 100 kN. The flat of the wagon wheel is L=100 mm. Numerical results of contact problem are obtained. Duration of contact is nearly equal to period during which the wheel set passes a half of the flat length. The contact force operating the wheelset is equal to approximately 1.0 MN. Maximum value of the sleeper acceleration is equal 410 g.

Opis:
Lapping process is commonly used for ultra-precision machining of various materials. An essential role during lapping plays flatness of the wheel-working surface because workpiece surface takes mirror image of it. Due to its applications requiring extreme size accuracy, straightness and concentricity, it is very important that working surface remains flat in the course of machining. Getting out of flatness can be caused by uneven wear or heating. To prevent nonuniform wear of lapping plate surface, conditioning rings should be suited appropriate. Lapping machines producers and researchers make recommendations about proper rings position during machining. To provide constant temperature of the wheel, cooling systems are applied in modern machines, but not in all of them. Therefore, wheel temperature problem is significant one, and it should be known. This paper presents results of authors work on choosing proper measurement method of lapping plate temperature. During lapping process wheel is rotating. Maximum velocity value for ABRALAP 380 lapping machine is 65 rev/min. Mainly for this reason, contactless infrared method was selected. Because getting an accurate temperature of an object using this method is difficult, during experiments temperature rise not exact value were analysed. There were also presented results of experiments which goal was to find lap plate emissivity.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the proposed research is to investigate operational properties of a wheel steel treated with simultaneous solid solution and precipitation hardening at various carbon content, in comparison with the standard wheel grade T steel. Design/methodology/approach: The mechanical behaviour of wheel steels with increased content of silicon, manganese, vanadium, and nitrogen at various carbon content has been investigated and compared to that of the standard high-strength wheel grade T steel. The steels were undergo thermal treatment due to austenitic heating up to a temperature of 950.C with cooling down in water to 550.C followed by intense blowing of blanks in the air. After that, a tempering was performed at a temperature in the range of 450-650.C. Static strength (UTS), relative elongation (TEL), impact toughness tests (KCV) were determined on standard specimens. The characteristics of Mode I fatigue crack growth resistance of steel were determined on the basis of fatigue macrocrack growth rate diagrams da/dN–ΔKI, obtained by the standard method on compact specimens with the thickness of 10 mm at a frequency of 10-15 Hz and the stress ratio R = 0.1 and R = 0.5 of the loading cycle. The characteristics of Mode II fatigue crack growth resistance were determined on the basis of da/dN–ΔKII diagrams, obtained earlier method on edge notched specimens with the thickness 3.2 mm at a frequency of 10-15 Hz and R = -1 taking account of the crack face friction. Rolling contact fatigue testing was carried out on the model specimens. Findings: The regularities of the change of mechanical characteristics of the high-strength wheel steel with simultaneous solid solution and precipitation hardening at lowered carbon content under static, impact and cyclic loading are studied. Research limitations/implications: The results obtained using laboratory samples should be checked during a real railway wheels investigation. Practical implications: The investigated steel with simultaneous solid solution and precipitation hardening provides high wear resistance of the tread surface and damage resistance determined on the model wheels. Originality/value: A steel with solid solution hardening due to increased content of silicon (up to 0.7%) and manganese (up to 0.8%) and also with precipitation hardening (at optimal content of vanadium and nitrogen [V‧N]‧104 = 28.9%) at lowered carbon content (0.52) possesses high strength and fatigue fracture toughness in cases of Mode I and Mode II loading, causing better combination of wear and damage resistances of the tread surface of the model wheels, as compared to corresponding parameters for grade T steel.
