Opis:
Reconstruction of burial and thermal history was modelled for the Mesozoic strata in the basement of the Polish and Ukrainian parts of the Carpathian Foredeep and in the marginal part of the Outer Carpathians. The 1-D modelling was carried out in profiles of the wells located in the area between Tarnogród and Stryi towns. In the Polish part, the modelling were performed in the profiles of the Księżpol 15, Lubliniec 9, Markowice 2 and Opaka 1 wells, and in the Ukrainian part in the profiles of the Chornokuntsi 1, Korolyn 6, Mosty 2, Podiltsi 1 and Voloshcha 1 wells. The geochemical characteristics of the Mesozoic stratigraphical horizons revealed that the best features of source rocks were present in the Middle Jurassic strata in the Polish part of the study area and in the Middle and Upper Jurassic strata in the Ukrainian part. Within these strata, the horizons of source rocks were distinguished and their quantitative evaluations were characterized. For these horizons, reconstruction of processes for hydrocarbon generation and expulsion were performed. The source rocks in the Polish part reached maturity only in the initial phase of “oil window”. However, the maturity achieved towards the end of the Upper Jurassic was insufficient to exceed the 10% threshold of the transformation degree for hydrocarbon generation. Therefore, the amount of generated hydrocarbons was minimal. Slightly higher maturity of organic matter in the Ukrainian part resulted in exceeding the thresholds of kerogen transformation and the initiation of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion processes. The process began after the deposition of thicker Miocene formations and developed even up to the main phase of the "oil window". The amount of the generated hydrocarbons reached ca. 150 mg/g TOC with an insignificant volume of expulsion.

Opis:
Quantity, genetic type and maturity of organic matter dispersed in the Lower Palaeozoic sequence from the Lower Cambrian to Silurian strata of the Polish and Ukrainian parts of the Carpathian Foredeep basement in the Tarnogród–Stryi area were evaluated based on the results of geochemical analyses of 475 rock samples collected from 45 wells. The best source rocks were found in the Silurian strata where the present total organic carbon (TOC) content is up to 2.6 wt%. They occur in the vicinity of Wola Obszańska, where the median of the present and the initial total organic carbon (TOC) contents in the individual wells amount to 0.98 and 1.6 wt%, respectively. The Cambrian and Ordovician strata have a poorer hydrocarbon potential and their present TOC content never exceeds 1 wt%. In all of the investigated Lower Palaeozoic strata, organic matter is represented by the oil-prone Type-II kerogen deposited in anoxic or sub-oxic conditions. The maturity of source rocks ranges from early mature (the initial phase of the low-temperature thermogenic processes) in selected zones of the Silurian strata in the vicinity of Wola Obszańska, through the middle and the final phase of “oil window” in the Ordovician and Cambrian strata in the Polish part of the study area, to the overmature stage in the Ordovician strata in the south-eastern part of the study area (Ukraine).

Opis:
Background. The aim of the study was to evaluate the awareness of Lyme borreliosis prevention and exposure to ticks in non-medical students of 2 universities in Ternopil Region (Western Ukraine). Material and methods. The study was conducted by surveying 252 young persons studying at non-medical universities in Ternopil (Western Ukraine): 119 students of Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatyuk National Pedagogical University (TNPU) and 133 of Ternopil Ivan Puluj National Technical University (TNTU), aged 18-23 years old. All the participants completed а questionnaire. Results. The students of Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatyuk National Pedagogical University (TNPU) and Ternopil Ivan Puluj National Technical University (TNTU), Ternopil, understand that the risk of being infected with Lyme borreliosis does not only appear in forests, but also in gardens, parks, and countryside. Still, 16.5% of the students of both Ternopil universities showed very low awareness about Lyme borreliosis. Most TNPU respondents in the study group (40.7%) were bitten by a tick in the abdomen area; 31.3% of the TNTU students declared being bitten in lower limbs. Students of both universities recorded the fewest bites in the chest area (7.1% in TNTU and 13.0% in TNPU respectively). As for the most frequent methods of tick removal, 71.4% of the respondents lubricated it with fat (e.g. butter, oil) and 42.0% twisted it out with tweezers. Conclusions. Education towards proper methods of tick removal, prevention of tick bites (clothes, repellents) should become an important element of protection measures in students in the regions of high Lyme borreliosis frequency, including Ternopil.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone wśród 252 młodych osób studiujących na uniwersytetach w Tarnopolu (Zachodnia Ukraina): 119 studentów z Narodowego Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego im. Hnatyuka (TNPU) oraz 133 z Narodowego Uniwersytetu Technicznego im. Ivana Pulugo (TNTU) w wieku 18 lat − 23 lata. Jako narzędzie badawcze wykorzystano autorski kwestionariusz ankiety. Wyniki. Wnioski.

Opis:
Contamination of surface soil horizons with heavy metals is usually related to long-lasting air pollution and might potentially affect soil fauna, as well as plant growth, harvesting and health of plant consumer. In order to estimate potential health risk, we investigated surface and subsurface soil contamination with heavy metals in avable area in one of the most industrialized region of western Ukraine, western Podole Upland. In total 80 samples from the area of about 35 km2 were sampled and analyzed for content of zinc, nickel, copper, cobalt, lead, arsenic and quicksilver. The research revealed several anomalies, where the content of these elements exceed 3-5 Ukrainian quality guidance for avable soils. Soils are the most contaminated with arsenic and quicksilver, with maximum concentrations exceeding local geochemical background about 20 times. Maximum nickel and zinc concentrations are about 10 times higher than the background while the content of copper and cobalt is elevated up to several times.
Stężenie niklu i cynku wynosi maksymalnie około 10 razy więcej, niż przewiduje norma, podczas gdy zawartość miedzi i kobaltu jest podwyższona kilkukrotnie.

Opis:
In an essay entitled Conrad’s Stereotypes – published in 1957 – Miłosz sees Conrad as “the typical old Polish nobleman who remained faithful to the way in which he had lived and thought as a young man.” Miłosz speaks of his own affinity with Conrad (and Mickiewicz), explaining that it derives from a set of shared emotional and historical experiences that were deeply ingrained in the minds of the inhabitants of the ‘Eastern Borderlands’of the old Polish-Lithuanian-Ruthenian Commonwealth. This ‘Eastern Borderlands’ cultural identity may well have enabled Conrad to give an authentic portrayal of the Russian characters in Under Western Eyes. The counterpart to Mickiewicz’s and Conrad’s condemnation of autocracy and the fairness of their attitude towards Russians was Miłosz’s willingness to maintain friendly relations with contemporary Russian ‘dissidents’ who had stood up against the oppressive political system of the Soviet Union. Surprisingly, however, he does not draw any parallels between the Polish stereotype of Russia and the portrayal of Russia which is to be found in Russian political literature. Miłosz concludes by observing that in Under Western Eyes it was only through the purely artistic merits of his writing that Conrad could have hoped to win over his English-speaking readers, while at the same time remaining “faithful to a tradition that would have seemed exotic to anyone living in another country” – and for this achievement he deserves praise.

The Deportation of the Polish Population in the Light of the NKVD Directives and Testimonies of the Displaced Families. The Attempt at Comparative Analysis. The article was a result of belief in the need of detailed description of the deportation of the families whose relatives had been murdered by the troops of the Soviet security apparatus in Katyn and other places of the former USSR. The article is an attempt at the comparative analysis of the NKVD directives with the reports of the exiled. The author carried out multiple-hour interviews with the Katyn families and Siberian exiles who were deported to Kazakhstan in April 1940. Moreover, the author used the expansive literature of memoirs and diaries of those times. The text includes the aspect of displacement and journey of the families to the remote steppes of Kazakhstan. The author aimed at confronting official directives for the operational units of the NKVD carrying out displacements with the reality maintained in the memories of the exiled, and pointing to similarities and differences between the first and the second deportations. The author described in detail the act of the NKVD barging into the houses of the families subject to deportation, indicated the directives concerning the deportation which were frequently ignored by the functionaries of the Soviet security apparatus, presented the house searches and pointed to these NKVD behaviours which were unusual and beyond the routine procedures. The article also describes the transportation to railway stations and the detailed journey in freight cars. It also includes the aspects of meals, executing physiological needs, intimate hygiene and death during the long journey. In the closing part of the text, the author referred to the ongoing dispute between historians and the Siberian exiles concerning the numbers of people deported in 1940-1941. He shortly characterised the major publications on that topic and referred to the important studies of the ‘Karta’ Centre and the Institute of National Remembrance in the series of ‘The Index of the Repressed’ which aim, among others, at specifying the list of names of all Poles deported during the four great Soviet displacement actions.

The consequences of global climate change are a decrease in precipitation as well as an increase in the length of the period with high temperatures from spring to autumn. The climate change intensified the negative consequences of land reclamation and regulation of rivers by dams in Ukraine in the 20th century. The modern landscape of the Circum-Pontic and Circum-Azov regions in Ukraine has undergone desertification, and a multiple reduction in the freshwater runoff has manifested itself in a violation of the water balance of soils and their salinization. In addition to the climate change and anthropic landscape transformations, most upland areas in southern Ukraine have been converted into farmland, systematically fertilized and treated with pesticides and herbicides. Total plowing of the territory also led to soil erosion and degradation. The global climate change and the impact of human activity have affected the diversity of the steppe fauna as well. The questions of the influence of soil humidity on the diversity of epigeic arthropods were considered on the example of ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae). Soil moisture is one of the key factors that determines their diversity.

Opis:
The Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous carbonate sediments developed in a narrow, Ukrainian part of the basement of the Carpathian Foredeep show high facies diversity. Based upon thin section studies, the authors identified eleven principal microfacies varieties. Three main stages of development of carbonate platform were distinguished: (i) Oxfordian–Early Kimmeridgian, (ii) Kimmeridgian–Tithonian, and (iii) Berriasian–Valanginian. The Oxfordian sediments are rather thin and represent both the outer and inner, distally steepened ramp facies. In the Late Kimmeridgian and, mainly, in the Tithonian, the intensive growth of rimmed platform took place with distinct zones of peritidal, margin barrier and platform slope, bearing calciturbidite facies. Development of the rimmed platform was controlled by synsedimentary tectonic movements along faults rejuvenated southwest of the Holy Cross Mts. Fault Zone. In the Berriasian–Valanginian, the dominant process was sedimentation onto not-rimmed platform controlled by small sea-level changes. Both the facies development and literature data indicate that the Late Jurassic sedimentation in the Ukrainian part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement shows considerable differences in comparison to that of the Polish part. In the studied successions, large Oxfordian microbial-siliceous sponge reef complexes, known from the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement and other areas in Europe, were rare. In the study area carbonate buildups were encountered mainly in the intervals representing the Upper Kimmeridgian–Tithonian where small, microbial-sponge and microbial-coral biostromes or patch-reefs were formed. Their growth was presumably restricted to a narrow zone of the upper slope, close to ooidal-bioclastic margin platform facies. In the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement, the Late Jurassic sedimentation took place on a vast, homoclinal ramp while in the Ukrainian part it proceeded on a narrow, distally steepened ramp and rimmed platform with distinct marginal platform barrier. Similar platform facies distribution in both regions appeared mainly in the Early Cretaceous, although with some stratigraphical differences. The facies distribution of the Upper Jurassic sediments was closely controlled by the block structure of the basement and by orientation of the main, transcontinental Holy Cross Mts. Fault Zone, which supports the opinion on its activity in the Mesozoic era. The Ukrainian part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement located over the Palaeozoic Kokhanivka Block, between the Krakovets and Holy Cross fault zones, includes predominantly the slope, marginal and inner platform facies. Facies observed over the Palaeozoic Rava Ruska Block (south-western part of the East-European Platform), between the Holy Cross and Rava Ruska fault zones, represents mainly the inner platform and the peri-shore deposits.

The article is about the selected and current problems of the Central and Eastern European foreign policy of the Slovak Republic. This state, like other small in terms of territory Central European countries, due to the actual position held as a player in international relations, it cannot influence the decisions of the other states, i.e. more powerful participants. In this respect, it seems interesting which analysed activities of the Slovak foreign policy are now a priority. The content analysis of the source documents and the results of operations of the Slovak government allows us to make a distinction between 'declared priorities "and" real priorities". The first shall be adopted officially, among others, by virtue of the Slovak Republic's membership in the Euro-Atlantic structures, and the latter are the result of an independent assessment of international affairs and strive to highlight the important role of the Slovak Republic in this area. In the case of the first group of priorities a very clear duality of attitudes can also be seen, which makes you think about the real objectives, especially in the Eastern European dimension of the foreign policy that the current government of the Slovak Republic aims to meet.
Artykuł dotyczy wybranych i aktualnych problemów z zakresu środkowo- i wschodnioeuropejskiego wymiaru polityki zagranicznej Republiki Słowackiej.

For a long time, outcrops at Potelych, Nahoryany and Lviv in western Ukraine have been of special interestfor Campanian andMaastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous) palaeontology and biostratigraphy. An overview of studies devoted to these classic sites is presented, including an early account of the locality of Nahoryany in a Polish newspaper, dated 1843. The biostratigraphic position ofthese successions is reviewed, based on recent progress in studies of inoceramid bivalves and ammonites. The succession at Potelych, from where a unique land flora was described at the beginning of the 20th century, represents the upper Campanian “Ino- ceramus” costaecus Zone. The Nahoryany opoka, the source of rich fossil collections that were sent to many European museums in the 19th century, belongs to the lower Maastrichtian Endo- costea typica and Trochoceramus radiosus zones. The so-called Lviv marls correspond to the lower upper Maastrichtian Spyridocera- mus tegulatus Zone. The giant scaphitid ammonites Hoploscaphites quadrispinosus and Acanthoscaphites tridens s. str from Potelych and Nahoryany corroborate the inoceramid-based dating of these successions.

Opis:
The article discusses the current historiography of the Communist Party of Western Ukraine (CPWU), the main communist organisation in the south-eastern provinces of the Second Polish Republic. Under that name the party was established in 1923 and from 1925 to 1938 (i.e. when the party was disbanded) it possessed the status of an autonomous organisation of the Communist Party of Poland. In fact, during that period the CPWU was directly dependent on the leadership of the communist party in the USSR, which is important to note. Despite several decades of Ukraine being ruled by communists, the CPWU had not been studied satisfactorily or completely impartially by Soviet historians. The unsatisfactory state of knowledge of the CPWU deprives us of opportunities to understand the important role the party played in preparing the ground for Soviet rule, which began (with a three-year gap) in 1939.

Opis:
The paper presents the issue of house constructions from the second half of the 4th millennium BC in western Ukraine and northern Moldova. While numerous reports concerning the dwellings of the Funnel Beaker Culture from the area east of the Bug River has been published, these accounts did not provide enough information to precisely assess their construction details. The first such structure whose features can be described in detail is the house from the site Lysivka in Vynnyky. The construction of the dwelling was lightweight, analogous to residential structures from the eastern group of the Funnel Beaker Culture. Another debatable topic was the characteristics of houses of the Gordinești group of the Tripolye Culture. Archaeological research at the site of Gordinești II-Stînca goală proved that communities of the late stage of this culture lived in lightweight houses that were built using clay. Neither the residential structures from the Vynnyky-Lysivka site, nor those from the site of Gordineşti II-Stînca goală, should be regardedas analogy to the classical “ploshchadkas” of the Tripolye Culture.

Opis:
The genus Diodora Gray, 1821 is widely represented in the Middle Miocene of the Central Paratethys with specimens usually attributed to D. graeca (Linnaeus, 1758) or D. italic (Defrance, 1820), well-known recent species of the Atlantic / Mediterranean Basin. In samples from the Upper Badenian of Western Ukraine we found two clusters of Diodora specimens, showing a similarity with these species, but a review of shell diagnostic characters using a statistical approach has revealed their clear conchological separateness. The first species from Varovtsi and Horodok is attributed herein to D. nodosa (Eichwald, 1830), whereas the second species from Maksymivka is described as a new species, D. stalennuyi sp. nov. We consider that these molluscs inhabited the Polish-Ukrainian marginal part of the Late Badenian Basin. Detailed descriptions of the protoconch and teleoconch morphology of the taxa involved, including SEM images, are presented.
