The main aim of this article is to present the results of studies on the involvement into the role of grandparents and relationship with their grandchildren, and the importance of grandchildren with building a well-being of grandparents in terms of meaning and purpose of life. The research bases on the latest reports of psychological and sociological researches and on classification of styles of grandparenting proposed by Cherlin and Furstenberg. The results indicate the existence of differences between styles of grandparenting (involved, companionate, remote). The differences are related to contacts between grandchildren and grandparents, the amount of the forms of activities with grandchildren, the level of help which the grandparents offer to the parents and the significance that grandchildren have with building well-being of grandparents.

Many studies on the impact of psychosocial working conditions on health prove that psychosocial stress at work is an important risk factor endangering workers’ health. Thus it should be constantly monitored like other work hazards. The paper presents a newly developed instrument for stress monitoring called the Psychosocial Working Conditions Questionnaire (PWC). Its structure is based on Robert Karasek's model of job stress (Karasek, 1979; Karasek & Theorell, 1990). It consists of 3 main scales - Job Demands, Job Control, Social Support - and 2 additional scales adapted from the Occupational Stress Questionnaire (Elo, Leppanen, Lindstrom, & Ropponen, 1992), Well-Being and Desired Changes. The study of 8 occupational groups (bank and insurance specialists, middle medical personnel, construction workers, shop assistants, government and self-government administration officers, computer scientists, public transport drivers, teachers, N = 3,669) indicates that PWC has satisfactory psychometrics parameters. Norms for the 8 groups were developed.

The study concerns the moderating role of two variables - hardiness and social support - in the relation between job stressors and well-being. It was checked if there is a connection between hardiness and social support, and if these variables are directly related to the level of well-being. It was also hypothesized that hardiness and social support buffer the negative influence of stressors on well-being. The fact that social support and well-being are multidimensional variables was taken into account. The cross-sectional study was conducted on a group of 200 women employed as office workers. The results showed that hardiness correlates with the indexes of emotional support as well as practical support coming from supervisors. The connection, however, was not strong. Hardiness and social support were directly connected with the level of well-being. Interaction of these two independent variables played a marginal role. As far as the buffering role of these variables was concerned, the results have shown that hardiness did not play a buffering role and social support did to a limited degree only. The results of the study proved that it is justifiable to treat social support and well-being as multidimensional variables.

Type A is widely treated as a risk of diseases (mostly coronary heart diseases) and stress, including occupational stress. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of intervention in modifying Type A in 25 managers in comparison with 38 Type A controls, who did not participate in the intervention. Additionally, the usefulness of the intervention was analysed when reactivity, as a temperamental dimension of Type A participants, was taken into account. High reactivity of Type A persons was assumed here as the presumed cause of the negative consequences in their health and well-being. The results showed a significant reduction in stress-related emotional symptoms, like depression, anxiety, anger, self-esteem, positive affects due to the intervention. These changes with the reduction in work ambiguity were greater in high reactive Type As than in low reactive ones.

In this study the effects of a worksite stress management intervention on changes in coping styles were examined. Ninety-five participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group participating in the intervention or to a control group with a delayed intervention. The stress management intervention was structured on enhancing so-called positive coping styles focused on problem solving and social diversion and on decreasing negative—emotion-focused and distraction—coping. The results showed that in the experimental group the level of positive coping styles significantly increased. The effect of decreased negative coping styles due to the intervention was observed only in the group of participants with a high level of negative affectivity.

This article presents studies on the determinants of the quality of life in people over the expected retirement age. Influence of health, Big Five personality dimensions, sense of coherence, purpose in life, activity and dwelling-place on the quality of life among the elders have been discussed. The separate chapter presents the retirement transition and additional factors that can affect life satisfaction in this period of life. Differences between the results of the presented studies indicate the necessity of further research into this subject taking into consideration the interaction between characteristics of a person and situational variables and both affective and cognitive aspects of quality of life.

In the article reasons for “education in possession” are introduced. The author defines the concept of “education in possession” in terms of educational objectives and means of their realization which are to help people in conscious and responsible choices related to fulfilling their vital needs using effectively available material resources. In the approach applied instead of looking at the problem from the point of view of idealistically set goals and directions of education, a question has been asked if acquiring and possessing material goods can provide clear advantages for individuals in relation to the quality of their lives. Such advantages are considered to serve as standards for the appropriateness of people’s choices and at the same time as benchmarks for educational objectives. The author, drawing conclusions from the results of numerous studies on the relationship between psychological well-being and material wealth, shows that wealth fulfils its function in relation to the fulfillment of human needs in the area of necessary comfort and in relation to the effectiveness of individuals’ everyday activities. Beyond that material strivings seem to be psychologically disadvantageous and lose their importance. After reaching a certain level being wealthier does not mean being happier, because the obtained surplus of possessions, being unnecessary, requires dealing with additional costs of the psychological nature. These psychological costs of material wealth have their roots in external and internal factors. The former are connected with objective discrepancies in wealth within societies and cultural rules and values, the latter with a type of motivation for acquiring material possession, nature of material goals, an individual level of materialism, a conflict between values, and a way of managing material resources. The avoidance of the costs described is treated in the article as a major educational objective in the field of “education in possession”.

Intolerance of ambiguity (the concept formulated by E. Frenkel-Brunswik in 1948) we can concern as emotional and cognitive dimension of personality. The adult under the pressure of demands to function in two life domains: work and family There is a growing number of men and women engaged in work and family roles. This article describes linkages between the work-family interface and individual, family and work outcomes: life satisfaction, marital satisfaction, individual psychologicall well-being, job stress. Recent studies on the work-family interface have focused on the scarcity perspective, which posits that engaging in multiple roles results in interrole conflict when participation in one role is made more difficult by virtue of participation in the other role. Other studies support the facilitation or enhancement hypothesis which suggests, that participation in one role is made better or easier by virtue of participation in the other role. The aim of this research is to present a research project studying the work-family questionnaire (Grzywacz, Bass, 2003) assessing work-family conflict, work-family facilitation, family-work conflict, family-work facilitation:to analyze both the conflict and facilitation dimensions and both directions of influence: work to family and family to work in dual-earner couples,to examine the relation of conflict and facilitation to life satisfaction, marital satisfaction and other indicators of mental health.The subjects in this research are 80 married couples living in dual-earner families in Poland, who have at least one child under 12.Measures used in this study:Work-Family Fit Questionnaire (Grzywacz, Bass, 2003) in Polish version adopted by Lachowska (2005),Job characteristics assessed through a questionnaire developed by Dudek at al. (1999),General Health Questionnaire (Goldberg, 1978),Marital Satisfaction Scale (Olson, Fowers, 1993),Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener at al., 1993).

Celem pracy była ocena, jak sprawdzają się, w toku produkcji, nowoczesne rozwiązania techniczne, technologiczne i konstrukcyjne, zastosowane w oborach wolnostanowiskowych z boksami legowiskowymi, oraz ocena eksploatacji różnych urządzeń zainstalowanych w pomieszczeniach inwentarskich. Badania przeprowadzono w latach 2006-2007 w 28 oborach o wysokim poziomie mechanizacji i automatyzacji, wybudowanych w latach 2000-2005 na terenie woj. wielkopolskiego i kujawsko-pomorskiego. Stwierdzono, że organizacja pracy na badanych fermach i eksploatacja urządzeń nie są zgodne ze standardami technologicznymi i wymogami formalno-prawnymi, nie zapewniają całkowitego komfortu bytowania krów mlecznych, a niektóre błędy czy niedociągnięcia mogą powodować złe samopoczucie zwierząt, większe zużycie paszy, problemy z rozrodem, zatrucia pokarmowe, urazy kończyn i zadu, choroby racic czy zwiększoną skłonność do nabywania innych chorób.
The purpose of the paper was to assess performance of modern technical, technological and constructional solutions in free-position barns with den boxes during production process, and to evaluate operation of different appliances installed in inventory rooms. The research was carried out in 28 barns with high level of mechanization and automation in 2006-2007. The barns were built in Wielkopolskie and Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeships in 2000-2005. It was found that work organization and operation of appliances in the examined farms did not comply with technological standards and formal and legal requirements and did not provide full comfort for dairy cattle. Some mistakes or shortcomings may make animals feel unwell and may cause larger fodder consumption, problems with reproduction, food poisoning, limb and rump injuries, hoof illness, or higher susceptibility to different diseases.

In his recent paper, professor Czapiński analyzes the relationship between social capital and individual well-being in Poland. He concludes that the former has no impact on the latter, which is predominantly driven by human capital. In this paper, we show that this conclusion may not be warranted. Our discussion draws on both theoretical considerations and empirical analysis.

The presented study was focused primarily on a psychometric analysis of the Attentional Control Scale (ACS), but they also enhanced the understanding of the role of effortful attentional skills in determining the individual well-being, general adaptation or emotional disorders. The analyses included basic item and scale descriptions as well as convergent and discriminant validity. 218 Polish undergraduate students completed the battery of the self-report techniques and two paper - pencil attentional tests. Data revealed a unidimensional of a 20-item ACS. It can be used validly to assess long-term individual differences in attentional skills related to the voluntary executive functions. The analysis of content, internal and construct validity as well as reliability provided evidence of the scale's significant convergent and discriminant validity when correlated with attentional tests and other personality techniques. We found strong, systematic relations between the attentional control and selected measures of temperament, arousal, emotionality, and motivation. The results allow assuming that good attentional control, may protect individuals from the emotional disorders by regulating perceptual, conceptual, and response processing.

Celem artykułu jest prezentacja kierunków dalszego rozwoju SHRM z  względu na takie ich przesłanki, jak zmiany w  strukturze zatrudnienia, zmiany organizacyjne i  otoczenia organizacji. Znaczenie tych zmian jest zróżnicowane ze względu na ich wpływ na zasoby ludzkie i  biznes. Zależy też od stopnia zaawansowania HRM w  organizacjach. Pierwsza część artykułu przedstawia przesłanki zmian SHRM i  cele opracowania. Następna odnosi się do firm, w  których funkcja personalna jeszcze nie uzyskała legitymizacji i  koncentruje się na postulowanych w  literaturze kierunkach przekształceń SHRM warunkujących jej osiągnięcie. Kolejne części kreślą spodziewane kierunki zmian w  dojrzałym SHRM (który już osiągnął legitymizację). Podsumowanie rozważań i  wnioski z  nich wypływające stanowią ostatnią część artykułu.
The objective of this paper is to present directions of further SHRM development in light of such circumstances as changes in employment structure, organizational changes, and changes to the organization's surroundings. The importance of these changes varies due to their impact on human resources and business. They are also dependent on the degree of advancement of HRM in the organization. The first part of this paper presents circumstances for SHRM changes and the objectives of this study. The next relates to companies in which the personnel function has as yet not achieve legitimation and concentrates on directions of change prerequisite to its achieving, as postulated in literature. The successive section drafts changes in direction as expected in mature SHRM (that has already achieved legitimation). The summary considerations and conclusions stemming from them make up the final part of this paper.

Celem artykułu jest analiza i  ocena wpływu transformacyjnego stylu kierowania na budowę pozytywnej organizacji. Opierają się one na teoretycznych założeniach oraz licznych badaniach prowadzonych w  wielu krajach, dotyczących efektów stosowania w  organizacji transformacyjnego stylu kierowania, a  także wprowadzania do zarządzania założeń psychologii pozytywnej. Autorki dokonują również analizy aktualnej sytuacji pozytywnego zarządzania i  stylów kierowania na podstawie wywiadów przeprowadzonych z  udziałem prezesów prywatnych jednostek gospodarczych funkcjonujących w  Polsce.
The objective of this paper is the analysis and assessment of the influence of a transformational style of leadership on the building of a positive organization. It is based on theoretical assumptions and numerous studies conducted in many countries on the effects of applying a transformational style of leadership in organizations as well as the introduction to management of the assumptions of positive psychology. The authors also undertake an analysis of the current state of positive management and leadership styles on the basis of several interviews conducted with the participation of the presidents of private economic entities operating in Poland.

The short well-being questionnaire enables measuring longitudinal work-related well-being. Work-related well-being was assessed with a 147-item questionnaire covering both organizational and intrinsic factors of work-related well-being. The questionnaire consisted of 27 categories. The respondents were 114 women (65%) and 62 men (35%), mean age 39.2 years, in various occupations. From the extensive questionnaire a shorter questionnaire with 33 items was developed by principal component analysis. The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin measure to test the sampling adequacy of 27 factor solutions varied from .62 to .91 and Cronbachʼs α was .74–.94. Most κ values of the shorter questionnaire were .50–.94 (p < .001). The reliability of the short version was comparable to that of the original questionnaire. The short one could also be suitable for Internet and mobile questionnaire applications.
