    The article is the first part of statistical analysis of marriage records of Jewish people from Piotrków Trybunalski for the period of 1808–1870. The author rises issues related to the age of entering into a marriage taking into consideration: social and economic factors, permanent celibacy, prospective spouses’ origins, seasonality, and remarriage patterns. One of the most significant conclusions is the age of concluding a marriage which is the first one for both parties, it is assigned about 20 for women and 22 for men – distinctly lower than in non-Jewish urban communities in the 19th century, like in Piotrków Trybunalski. The author points out diversity in matrimonial customs among Jewish communities of Poland of that time. The statistical evidence from Piotrków Trybunalski does not provide full explanation of the observed differences. Both frequent marriages of widowers with single women, and the duration of widowhood among the group being studied fit into a model investigated in other (non-Jewish) communities, and are contrary to traditional Judaism recommendations.

    W artykule przedstawiono analizę nastawienia (poglądy, postawy i działania) uczniów szkół średnich i studentów wyższych uczelni w Polsce w XX wieku i w obu dekadach XXI wieku do instytucji małżeństwa i do rozwodów małżeńskich. Podstawę tej analizy stanowią wyniki różnych badań socjologicznych zrealizowanych w obu tych okresach. W zakres nastawienia młodzieży polskiej do małżeństwa i rozwodów wchodzą następujące zagadnienia: małżeństwo jako wartość podstawowa i uroczysta; małżeństwo sakramentalne – jego nierozerwalność i trwałość; postawy młodzieży wobec ślubu kościelnego i cywilnego; postawy młodzieży wobec rozwodów małżeńskich i rozpadu rodziny. Wskaźniki empiryczne ukazują proces trwałości i zmiany w nastawieniu młodzieży polskiej do małżeństwa i rozwodów w okresie z przełomu obu wieków – zarówno do małżeństwa sakramentalnego, jak i do cywilnych związków małżeńskich. Jakie czynniki sprzyjające trwałości małżeństwa dostrzegała badana młodzież, a jakie były najczęściej powody jego rozpadu i prowadziły wprost do rozejścia się małżonków? Jak badana młodzież osobiście postrzegała i oceniała trwałość małżeństwa, a jak rozwód w wyniku jego rozpadu? Na te pytania odpowiada ten artykuł.
    This article presents an analysis of attitudes (views, attitudes and actions) of high school and university students in Poland in the 20th century and in both decades of the 21st century towards the institution of marriage and towards marital divorce. The analysis is based on the results of various sociological studies carried out in both periods. The attitudes of Polish youth to marriage and divorce include the following issues: marriage as a fundamental and solemn value; sacramental marriage – its indissolubility and durability; young people’s attitudes towards church and civil weddings; young people’s attitudes towards marital divorce and family breakdown. Empirical indicators show the process of durability and changes in the attitude of Polish youth to marriage and divorce at the turn of the two centuries – both to sacramental marriage and to civil marriages. What factors contributing to the durability of the marriage were noticed by the surveyed youth, and what were the most common reasons for its breakdown and led directly to the splitting up of the spouses? How did the surveyed youth personally perceive and assess the durability of marriage, and as divorce as a result of its disintegration.
    Der Artikel präsentiert eine Analyse der Einstellungen (Ansichten, Einstellungen und Handlungen) von Gymnasiasten und Universitätsstudenten in Polen im 20. Jahrhundert und in beiden Jahrzehnten des 21. Jahrhunderts zur Institution Ehe und Scheidung. Diese Analyse basiert auf den Ergebnissen verschiedener soziologischer Studien, die in beiden Zeiträumen durchgeführt wurden. Die Einstellung der polnischen Jugend zu Heirat und Scheidung umfasst folgende Themen: Ehe als grundlegender und feierlicher Wert; sakramentale Ehe - ihre Unauflöslichkeit und Dauerhaftigkeit; Einstellung der Jugend zu kirchlichen und standesamtlichen Trauungen; Einstellung junger Menschen zu Ehescheidungen und Familienzusammenbrüchen. Empirische Indikatoren zeigen die Dauerhaftigkeit und den Wandel der Einstellung der polnischen Jugend zur Eheschließung und Scheidung in der Zeit um die Jahrhundertwende - sowohl zur Sakramentenehe als auch zur standesamtlichen Eheschließung. Welche Faktoren, die zur Dauerhaftigkeit der Ehe beitragen, wurden von den befragten Jugendlichen wahrgenommen und was waren die häufigsten Gründe für das Scheitern und führten direkt zur Trennung der Ehegatten? Wie haben die befragten Jugendlichen persönlich die Dauerhaftigkeit der Ehe wahrgenommen und eingeschätzt, und wie kam es zu einer Scheidung infolge des Scheiterns? Dieser Artikel beantwortet diese Fragen.

    The article presents weddings in the parish of Płonka Kościelna in the years 1826– 1864, on the basis of parish registers residing in the parish archive. It contains basic issues such as the age of the betrothed and their marital status. Special attention was paid to the questions of having living parents on the day of wedding, and, what follows, the betrotheds’ place of residence. The element of service is presented as a stage in the life cycle of an individual. The research employed statistical methods as well as selected examples of weddings and the couples involved.
    W artykule przedstawiono małżeństwa w parafii Płonka Kościelna w latach 1826–1864 na podstawie ksiąg metrykalnych przechowywanych w archiwum parafialnym. Poddano analizie podstawowe zagadnienia, takie jak wiek nupturientów i stan cywilny. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na kwestie posiadania żyjących rodziców w dniu ślubu, a co za tym idzie także miejsce zamieszkania nupturientów. Zaprezentowano element służby, jako etap w cyklu życia jednostki. Posłużono się metodami statystycznymi oraz wybranymi przykładami ślubów i osób.

    In many ways the continued popularity of traditional weddings in the United States may seem surprising in light of the increased rates of divorce, cohabitation, and non-marital child-bearing in the latter half of the twentieth century, which have accompanied the rise of what has come to be called the “postmodern” family. This research draws upon in-depth interviews with twenty white, middle class women who recently had traditional weddings and explores the connections between the postmodern family context and the desirability of traditional weddings. Specifically, it examines how traditional functions of formal weddings are still relevant within contemporary society. Findings indicate that the traditional functions of weddings operate differently in the current family context, but are important aspects of the appeal of formal weddings for modern brides. Large, formal weddings encourage extended family bonding, which may be more important now than in past decades due to the high rates of divorce and remarriage. New “invented traditions” are sometimes being included in weddings to allow for the participation of the wider range of family members that exists in post-modern families. Furthermore, having a large, traditional wedding may serve to decrease anxiety about marriage through providing a predictable entry into marriage and a testing ground for the couple’s marital work ethic.

    A imigração portuguesa na cidade do Rio de Janeiro – após a Independência do Brasil e ao longo do tempo em que o país caracterizou-se como um lugar de chegada de fluxos deslocados da Eu-ropa – foi sempre muito superior à das demais nacionalidades. Os estudos dedicados ao tema, en-tretanto, são relativamente recentes, em virtude da invisibilidade imposta pelas proximidades linguísticas e culturais entre os dois povos. Nesse contexto, o artigo busca ser uma contribuição a um processo de desvelamento que se intensificou a partir da virada do novo século. Seu objetivo principal é a análise das relações travadas entre matrimônios e negócios, em uma perspectiva de formação de teias que colaboraram para a manutenção de características portuguesas no pequeno comércio da cidade. Com esse objetivo, propõe o diálogo entre teoria e empirismo e utiliza, co-mo fontes principais, depoimentos de imigrantes. Em termos metodológicos, utiliza a História Oral para propor exercícios de prosopografia, capazes de propor reflexões encaminhadas do in-dividual aos processos coletivos.
    Portuguese immigration to the city of Rio de Janeiro – after the Independence of Brazil and throughout the time that the country was characterized as a destination for displaced people from Europe – was always on a much larger scale than that of other nationalities. However, studies devoted to the subject are relatively recent, because of the invisibility imposed by linguistic and cultural proximities between the two peoples. In this context, the article seeks to be a contributi-on to a process of unveiling that has intensified since the turn of the new century. Its main objec-tive is to analyze the relationship between marriage and business, from a perspective of web formation that helped to maintain Portuguese characteristics in the small commerce of the city. With this aim, it proposes a dialogue between theory and empirical data and uses, as its main sources the testimonies of immigrants. In terms of methodology it uses Oral History to propose exercises in prosopography, which can forward reflections from the individual to the collective processes.

    This article raises the subject of threats to the institution of marriage as seen by the Polish bishops in 1918-1939. In the interwar period, the bishops watched over the purity of the teaching on marriage and were sensitive to emerging threats to this institution.Therefore, this article will present the teaching of the bishops in pastoral letters and messages first on the sanctity of marriage and then will discuss the threats in the form of civil weddings, divorces, mixed marriages or misconceived conscious motherhood.
    Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje temat zagrożeń instytucji małżeństwa widzianych przez biskupów polskich w latach 1918-1939. W okresie dwudziestolecia międzywojennego biskupi czuwali nad czystością nauki o małżeństwie i byli wyczuleni na pojawiające się zagrożenia dotyczące tej instytucji. Stąd też w opracowaniu zostanie zaprezentowane nauczanie biskupów w listach pasterskich i odezwach, najpierw na temat świętości małżeństwa, a następnie zostaną omówione zagrożenia w postaci ślubów cywilnych, rozwodów, małżeństw mieszanych, czy błędnie pojmowanego świadomego macierzyństwa.

    Reception of Jewish art and rituals as well as their effect on Christian iconography of the wedding of the Old and New Testament, and especially the scenes of The Wedding of Mary and Joseph are the main objects of the author's research. They are concerned with the art of the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern age. The author's aim is not only to confront the Biblical narration with the art presentations and to distinguish the repertoire of Jewish symbols and objects made by handicraft presented in the scenes of weddings and of wedding parties, but also to show the infiltration of Jewish wedding rituals into Christian ones that can be seen in art.
