Foreign language teachers and researchers face a major challenge enabling students’ learning. Not only must they provide training in the target language, but they must also find ways to optimise class time and enhance students’ communication skills in the target language. How does technology intersect with English teaching in ways that benefit learning? A possible approach would align with integrating web-based strategies and optimising class time through new methodologies, techniques and resources. In this study, a group of university engineering students were taught with simulations to aid their learning of English as a foreign language. These engineering students were taught English through both class-based and a large-scale real-time web-based simulation. We present the results of quantitative analysis of students’ oral production. The goal was to show whether simulation-based instruction contributes to significant progress in oral language production in English. The results indicate that students progressed significantly in four language-related areas: vocabulary, pronunciation, variety of expression and grammar.

Opis:
The significance of learners’ personality in language learning/teaching contexts has often been cited in literature but few studies have scrutinized the role it can play in technology-oriented language classes. In modern language teaching/learning contexts, personality differences are important and should be taken into account. This study determined university students’ introvert/extrovert personality types and examined their perception/ attitudes towards web-based language learning. The participants of the study who were selected through purposive sampling were 40 BA students of EFL, 22 female and 18 male. The participants attended blended classes that incorporated use of the Internet (Edublogs). Quantitative data were collected via the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) (1975) and two modified web-based language learning attitude/perception questionnaires (Gilmore, 1998; Slate, Manuel, & Brinson, 2002). Interviews were conducted to reveal insights concerning the advantages/disadvantages of integrating use of the Internet from the participants’ perspectives. T-test analyses did not indicate significant differences in attitudes between extroverts and introverts. Qualitative results indicated most of the participants considered internal, external, and psychological factors associated with the Internet use to be motivating, exciting, and stimulating. The study has implications for teachers and practitioners, particularly in blended, language learning classrooms.

Opis:
Interest in Web-based and computer-assisted language testing is growing in the field of English for academic purposes (EAP). In this study, four groups of undergraduate EAP students (n=120), each group consisted of 30 students, were randomly selected from four different disciplines, i.e. biology, political sciences, psychology, and law. The four groups were homogeneous regarding their English proficiency. Four course-specific web-based tests of academic vocabulary were administered to each group with regard to their specific disciplines. Questionnaires were employed to explore the EAP students’ perceptions and self-efficacy concerning web-based language testing. Also, the perceptions of the four groups of undergraduates were compared in order to identify the differences among their attitudes. The findings would have implications for renewing assessment approaches and methods used in EAP instruction.

Opis:
The paper presents a web based system reliability analysis. We propose to model different types of faults (hardware one, software and security incidents) taking consideration only the effect of the failure, not the source of the fault. It is assumed that failure events are independent and the time to failure is exponential. Whereas the time to repair is not exponential since repair actions are taken only when administrators are at work. We assume that administrators are not working 24/7. The paper presents an algorithmic model of the repair time including administrator working hours. The model is used to estimate reliability parameters (mean time, standard deviation and 90th percentile of yearly down time) by a use of Monte-Carlo simulation. The numerical results are compared with results from the analytical model (Markov one) that assumes exponential distribution of all repair times. Results for two web exemplar web systems (with reliability model consisting of two and five states) show the range of error caused by the exponential distribution assumption.

Opis:
A comprehensive understanding of participants’ motives to complete web-based surveys has the potential to improve data quality. In this study we tested the construct validity of a scale developed to measure motivation to participate in webbased surveys. We expected that 7 different motivations observed in our previous study will form a 3-factor structure, as predicted by Self-Determination Theory. This web-based questionnaire study comprised 257 participants completing the Voluntary Participation in Online Studies Scale. Their responses to 21 items underwent a principal component analysis and confi rmatory factor analysis. As we expected, three factors were identifi ed: intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and amotivation. In line with Self-Determination Theory there are three distinct groups of motives among web-surveys participants with amotivation as an understudied motivational state. We discuss the results suggesting which types of motivation might lead to higher quality of data with an emphasis on possible negative effects of amotivation.

An essential problem for enterprises is the planning and the organization of the obtaining all types of resources process, defined as sourcing, and in the case of the utilization of web-based technologies, as e-sourcing. The article presents definitions of basic notions, such as: sourcing, e-sourcing, strategic sourcing and strategic e-sourcing, the concept of resource-based view and classification of resources. The analysis also included the development of supply processes realized on-line. The purpose of this paper is to use a resource-based view to answer management’s questions: whether e-sourcing as the process of sources and means of planning supply into all resources of the enterprise is a process of a strategic meaning for the enterprise? How to organize this process and which web-based solutions technologies can be used in its effective realization? The organizational model for strategic e-sourcing was proposed in which for each of the four distinguished stages, the utilization of web-based technology solutions was suggested.

Opis:
The study investigated the learner perceptions of a CALL component in a blended language learning context. 52 Taiwanese college students attended instructional classroom sessions and did weekly online assignments in the form of interactive web-based exercises over one semester. Their learning performance was measured by means of two computer-based language assessments at the mid-point and final part of the semester. Learners’ perceptions of the interactive web-based exercises were elicited by a computerized survey conducted at the end of the semester. The results reported on the survey revealed that participants perceived the interactive web-based exercises as interesting but only modestly so. This was probably attributable to the difficulty level of the created exercises and a lack of diverse exercise formats. Even so, having easy access, receiving immediate feedback, allowing multiple attempts, and enabling self-paced learning were mentioned as benefits of the constructed exercises. More importantly, most participants reported the effectiveness of these exercises in improving their reading comprehension and vocabulary leaning. This confirmed language assessment results that demonstrated significant gains in reading comprehension and vocabulary knowledge. Implications include suggestions for language teachers and program developers for improving the way web-based learning activities are created and implemented.

Opis:
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been used in numerous applications to remotely gather real-time data on important environmental parameters. There are several projects where WSNs are deployed in different locations and operate independently. Each deployment has its own models, encodings, and services for sensor data, and are integrated with different types of visualization/analysis tools based on individual project requirements. This makes it dicult to reuse these services for other WSN applications. A user/system is impeded by having to learn the models, encodings, and services of each system, and also must integrate/interoperate data from different data sources. Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) provides a set of standards (web service interfaces and data encoding/model specications) to make sensor data publicly available on the web. This paper describes how the SWE framework can be extended to integrate disparate WSN systems and to support standardized access to sensor data. The proposed system also introduces a web-based data visualization and statistical analysis service for data stored in the Sensor Observation Service (SOS) by integrating open source technologies. A performance analysis is presented to show that the additional features have minimal impact on the system. Also some lessons learned through implementing SWE are discussed.
