Opis:
Wlotzka scale (Wlotzka 1993) is commonly used to determine the weathering grade of ordinary chondrites. The scale is descriptive and based mostly on a subjective assessment of researcher. In this paper authors define a new, quantitative method to establish the W0–W4 weathering grade, which is based on planimetry of FeNi grains. Results of planimetry are compared with average content of FeNi metal in unweathered chondrites from the same group. Weathering grade estimated by this method are consistent with, or slightly different from the official one determined in classification, what proves the efficacy of the proposed method. Moreover, the method was applied to define weathering grade of meteoritic samples not classified so far: Pułtusk (W2), Thuathe (W2), Gao-Guenie (W2/W3), NWA 5205 (W3), NWA 4505 (W3), NWA 5296 (W2).

Opis:
The article is a case study of the development of cavernous weathering forms (alveoli and tafoni) on a sea cliff near Keflavik on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland. The majority of forms are found on vertical or inclined rock faces and cluster around the uppermost edge of the cliff. Single hollows gradually evolve due to back wearing of their sidewalls into complex caverns, until finally the whole outermost layer of basalt is removed. Particular attention is paid to mineralogical changes of basalts due to chemical and salt weathering. Chemical decomposition of feldspars, pyroxenes and olivines followed by precipitation of iron on and within the weathering rind, the presence of micro- and macro-pores such as gas bubbles and delivery of marine salts are proposed to be the key factors influencing cavern development.

Sparry limestone, ferruginous muddy limestone and limestone breccia have been found in the Western Tatra Mts. They occur within Jurassic rocks of the Choč Nappe just below red conglomerates of probable Eocene age. The deposits found bear strong resemblance to the infill of subterranean karst forms. They differ significantly from Quaternary karst deposits of the Tatra Mts. The δ18O values of spelean carbonates suggest crystallisation at relatively high temperatures (over 20°C) whereas their relatively negative δ13C values imply the presence of soil-derived CO2 linked with vegetation dominated by C3 pathway plants. The karst forms and their infill were formed before the Eocene transgression, which shows unequivocally that the Tatra Mts. were subjected to karstification at that time.

Opis:
In the Central Caucasus region, the intense process of deglaciation is identified as caused by cryoconite formation and accumulation. The fine earth materials were collected on the surfaces of Skhelda and Garabashi glaciers as well as from zonal soils of Baksan Gorge and were studied in terms of chemical, particle-size, and micromorpholo-gical features. Supraglacial sediments are located at the glacial drift area of material and, thus, due to transfer of these sediments to the foothill area, their fine earth material can affect micromorphological and chemical characteristics of adjacent zonal soils. Thin sections of mineral and organo-mineral micromonoliths were analyzed by classic micromorphological methods. Data obtained showed that the weathering rates of cryoconite and soil minerals are different. The cryoconite material on the debris-covered Skhelda Glacier originated from local massive crystalline rocks and moraines, while for Garabashi Glacier the volcanic origin of cryoconite is more typical. Soils of Baksan Gorge are characterized by more developed microfabric and porous media, but their mineralogical composition is essentially inherited from sediments of glacial and periglacial soils. These new data could be useful for understanding the process of evolution of the mineral matrix of cryoconite to the soil matrix formed at the foot of the mountain.

Wojcieszyce
Opis:
The secondary uranium mineral, saléeite, was found in dumps of the former Wojcieszyce Uranium Mine. It occurs as tiny tabular crystals, up to 0.3 cm in size. The chemical formula, which was calculated on the basis of a 12 spot analyses is: (Mg0.73Fe0.05K0.04Ca0.04)S0.86(UO2)2.16(PO4)2.00·10H2O. The cation position is occupied mainly by Mg. The Mg ions are partially substituted by Fe, K and Ca. The tetrahedral position is occupied by the PO43- ion. The interaction between acidic pore solutions (originating from the reaction of pyrite oxidation), uraninite and minerals of the host rocks (chlorite, apatite) leads to the release of Mg2+, UO22+ and PO43- ions. These ions are adsorbed by amorphous Fe oxyhydroxides and poorly ordered ferrihydrite. Crystallization and recrystallization of these phases leads to the release of adsorbed ions and favours the crystallization of saléeite. The coexistence of saléeite and goethite, which forms by recrystallization of ferrihydrite, points to an important role of sorption and desorption of Mg2+, PO43- and UO22+ ions in the process of crystallization of this mineral species. Crystallization of saléeite occurs at a pH of 5.5–6.0. The supergene zone of the Wojcieszyce deposit is the first occurrence of saléeite in Poland.

Wśród stosowanych wskaźników największą rolę mają wietrzeniowy wskaźnik Parkera (WIP) i chemiczny wskaźnik przemian (CIA), zatem im poświęcono najwięcej uwagi. W celu lepszego odzwierciedlenia intensywności wietrzenia stosowano dodatkowe wskaźniki, wrażliwe na najmniejsze zmiany geochemiczne. Obliczano wskaźnik Vogt’a (V), wskaźnik wietrzenia chemicznego Harnois’a (CIW) i wskaźnik przemian plagioklazów (PIA).
Chemical weathering indices are commonly used for characterizing weathering profiles and evaluating degree of weathering process. Their values allow to point at nonweathered source rock composition. Using study results of Odra and Warta drainage basin sediments, there was made a try to define variability of chemical indices in this country area. Among applied indices the most important role have Weathering Index of Parker (WIP) and Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA), thus them was given the most attention to. In order to better reflecting the intensity of weathering there were used additional indices, sensitive to the slightest geochemical changes. Vogt’s Residual Index (V), Chemical Index of Weathering (CIW) and Plagioclase Index of Alteration (PIA) were calculated. Study results let to evaluation the weathering intensity in the all study area and to indicate factors, which are in charge of this process. Lithology, climate, flow magnitude and region morphology have an influence on the values of weathering indices.

Opis:
In order to reproduce the conditions under which sediments were transported in surging glaciers, samples were taken from the margin and foreland of the surge Medvezhiy Glacier situated in West Pamir (Tajikistan). They were subjected to an analysis of rounding and frosting of quartz sand grains (0.8–1.0 mm) and of grain surface micromorphology under scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results obtained showed intense chemical weathering occurred in the majority of quartz grain surfaces, marked in the form of etching and precipitation. Frequencies of microstructures of glacial origin were low; individual microstructures were visible on single grains. A predominance of the crushing process over abrasion in transformation of quartz grains was noted. The commonest microstructures connected with a surge-glacier environment were large and small conchoidal fractures. However, grains with primary features not connected with a glacial environment were equally common. The majority of the grains examined showed features of multiple cycles of mechanical and chemical weathering forming a microtexture under various conditions (overprinting). Common features of grains from surging glaciers are also breakage blocks of >10μm, which depend of the phase of separation of the grain from the rock or on thermal changes in the glacier’s foreland.

Opis:
The study of the geochemical composition of sediments was undertaken to evaluate the degree of weathering and appraise the relative proportion of mafic and felsic rock materials being transported from source to sink. Thirty-three surface sediment samples collected from the creeks were used for particle size and chemical analyses. An inductively coupled plasma-Mass Spectrometer was used to determine the elemental composition of the sediments. The clay dominated Yewa and western Badagry creeks gave evidence of higher average concentrations of Ni, Sr, Y, Nb, Sc, Co, V, and Th than the eastern end of segment of Badagry Creek. The data generated from elemental ratios such as Al 2 O 3 /TiO 2, TiO 2 /Zr and binary plots of Th/Sc-Cr/Sc, Th-Sc, Y/Ni-Cr/V, TiO 2 -Zr and ICV-CIA (index of compositional variability against chemical index of alteration) showed that source sediments are composed of upper and lower crustal compositions. Also, the creeks were marked by their variation in terms of the proportion of felsic and mafic components. For instance, Yewa and western Badagry creeks are more enriched in mafic constituents, whereas the enrichment of felsic materials is significant at the eastern end of Badagry Creek. Inferring from the chemical index of alteration and plagioclase index of alteration (PIA), the Yewa and western Badagry creeks have been moderately to intensely weathered and incipient weathering was identified in the eastern end of Badagry Creek.
