Opis:
The aim of the paper was an attempt to describe clothing of the wearable electronics domain, defined as smartmode, techmode, e-confection, equipment togs, dresstronics, electronic clothes or electronic fancy goods, constituing a symptom of the accomplishment of socio-cultural and technological transformation in the sphere of dress, attire and costume. Three questions were formulated in the research process: first, regarding the methodological status in the domain of wearable electronics; second, whether it is methodologically acceptable to define it as dress, attire or costume; third, which of the three afore-mentioned expressions may and ought to be used in referring to wearable electronics. The thesis was accepted that, despite semantic similarity, it is methodologically unwarranted to define clothing, which fulfils the function of dress, as wearable electronics. The thesis was confirmed. The historical and analytical descriptive methods were applied.

Opis:
Disorders of the heart and blood vessels are the leading cause of health problems and death. Early detection of them is extremely valuable as it can prevent serious incidents (e.g. heart attack, stroke) and associated complications. This requires extending the typical mobile monitoring methods (e.g. Holter ECG, tele-ECG) by introduction of integrated, multiparametric solutions for continuous monitoring of the cardiovascular system. In this paper we propose the wearable system that integrates measurements of cardiac data with actual estimation of the cardiovascular risk level. It consists of two wirelessly connected devices, one designed in the form of a necklace, the another one in the form of a bracelet (wrist watch). These devices enable continuous measurement of electrocardiographic, plethysmographic (impedance-based and optical-based) and accelerometric signals. Collected signals and calculated parameters indicate the electrical and mechanical state of the heart and are processed to estimate a risk level. Depending on the risk level an appropriate alert is triggered and transmitted to predefined users (e.g. emergency departments, the family doctor, etc.).

Opis:
A flexible and compact coplanar waveguide feed (CPW-fed) wearable antenna is introduced for wireless wearable communications applications at the industrial scientific medical (ISM) band. The proposed antenna consists of copper, which is used as the radiation patch and ground planes printed on the same side of polyimide flexible substrate. The overall size of the antenna is 30 mm × 28 mm × 0.08 mm, the results show that the antenna can transmit and receive signals in two frequency bands of 1.89–2.67 GHz and 3.02–3.23 GHz, in which radiating properties are characterized and agree well with the simulation results. The antenna is bent in different directions to further investigate the reflection coefficient and corresponding effect on the antenna under bending. The center frequency of the antenna is slightly shifted towards higher and lower frequencies when antenna is bent in X-axis and Y-axis, respectively. Furthermore, the wearability of the antenna is verified when the antenna is placed on different parts of the human body such as wrist and chest. Hence, the proposed flexible antenna is a suitable candidate for wearable wireless communication applications.

W artykule zostały opisane koncepcyjne aspekty projektowania umundurowania inteligentnego, przeznaczonego do wspomagania akcji ratunkowych. Umundurowanie składa się z hełmu, odzieży tekstronicznej oraz bransoletki. Hełm wyposażony jest w dwie kamery monitorujące przestrzeń z przodu i z tyłu. Bransoletka służy do śledzenia położenia i aktualnego stanu (ruch, bezruch, upadek).
This paper describes conceptual aspects of designing smart uniforms for rescue and emergency assisting. It is assumed that a uniform will consist of a helmet, textronic clothing and a bracelet. These componentsof the uniform are shown in Fig. 1. The helmet is equipped with two video cameras monitoring the space before and after the operation area. Clothing includes a variety of optional features for each type of intervention teams, i.e. various sensors, physiological and environmental parameters and the electronic module that provides collection and two-way exchange of information with the command center of the action through appropriate transmission channels. The bracelet is used to track the location and current state (movement, stillness, and fall) of a person intervening in the monitored area of action. These basic and optional components of the uniform are presented in Tab. 1. Additionally, the system complements the external equipment to assist the collection of distorted signals in a lossy environment. The biggest obstacle in the development of smart clothing is still a problem of multiple washing fabrics with elements of electronics. The advantage of the currently used products is a comprehensive approach to uniform, as a comprehensive system to ensure protection. A smart uniform is not just another gadget, but equipment to protect life and health of its users, but may be a subject to fashion trends [14], utility and styling. Such clothing should not cause discomfort to the user, but should support and facilitate the operation in hazardous conditions.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – Increasing importance of quantified self along with the number of available wearable devices create base for excitement among those perceiving technology as a catalyst for change. Despite multiple theories, in vain is to search for a model that would be suitable to visualise the adoption of wearables. The objective of this study is to recognise factors influencing the adoption of smart wearable devices and measure the strength of relationships between identified variables and dependent factor. Design/methodology/approach – A proposed research model was developed and tested, based on an analysis of 108 survey insights from existing and potential users of smart wearable devices. With Dubai claiming itself ‘the smartest city worldwide’, research was purposely focused on this city, with insights collected during 37th GITEX (Gulf Information Technology Exhibition) Technology Week (8-12 October 2017), in Dubai. Statistical analysis, with the use of Adanco 2.0.1 software, was conducted and as a result, structural equation modelling was proposed. Findings – The study shows clearly the growing importance of the wearables trend and consumers’ willingness to possess the same. Based on the conducted literature analysis, factors playing critical role, like Product Attributes (PA), Perceived Ease of Use (PE) and Perceived Usefulness (PU), were identified along with the gaps pertaining to the adoption of smart wearable devices in Dubai. Research implications/limitations – The outputs of the conducted research provide practical guidance for solution/technology/product makers as well as sales representatives, to mould and pitch the product in a more effective manner. Due to time and financial constraints, study lacks conducted in-depth expert reviews, focus groups and laboratory experiment for real-time experience with existing/planned products. The limited sample size (108 respondents) and lack of possibility to generalise on the population, due to sampling by convenience are other points of improvements for future research. Originality/value/contribution – The study bridges the literature gap, providing quantitative analysis and overview of factors impacting on the adoption of wearable devices, based on the Theory of Reasoned Action, the Theory of Planned Behaviour and the Technology Acceptance Model. Moreover, constructed on achieved results, it proposes a new sequential multi-method approach model of technology adoption, based on researched factors such as Perceived Usefulness and Attitude towards smart wearable devices, influenced by Perceived Ease of Use and Perception towards new technology. Findings of the study allow for direct business implementation by smart devices developers, willing to introduce their new solutions to the market and plan their promotional strategy.

Objectives The purpose of the current study was to explore the effects of a mobile health (mHealth) intervention based on the Persuasive System Design (PSD) model on health-related outcomes among office workers. Material and Methods The authors conducted a trial that consisted of a 4-week baseline and an 8-week intervention period by reference to 23 office workers in a private research company. The mHealth application was developed to improve these workers’ daily step count, decrease their sedentary time, and increase their sleep duration in accordance with the PSD model. The app features included at least 1 principal factor from each of the 4 main categories of the PSD model (primary task support, dialogue support, system credibility support, and social support). The objective health-related variables were measured using a smartwatch (Fitbit Luxe) that was synchronized with the application using the Fitbit Web Application Programming Interface. Subjects used the app, which included self-monitoring, personalized messages, education, and a competition system for users, during the intervention period. Results Sedentary time exhibited a significant decrease (a median reduction of 14 min/day, p < 0.05) during the intervention period. No significant differences in daily step count and sleep duration were observed between the baseline and intervention periods. Conclusions This study suggests that the mHealth intervention based on the PSD model was useful for reducing sedentary time among office workers. Given that many previous studies on this topic have not been based on any theories, future studies should investigate the impact of structured selection behavior change theories on health-related outcomes among office workers.

In the Division of Design of Precision Devices at the Faculty of Mechatronics of Warsaw University of Technology works there are performed upon a system for verticalisation and substituting gait for people with paresis (Fig. 1). Works are supported with simulation software. Simulation model of the system actuators is described in the paper. The purpose of simulation was to estimate energy consumption of actuators and to assess quality of their movements. Main assumption for the model is that mechanisms activating user's legs are of a planar kind. Matlab-SimMechanics mathematical environment was used for modelling. Structure of the model is presented in Fig. 2. Parts of human body are sources of load for actuators as described by eq. (2) and (3). Their parameters are inserted into "body" blocs (Fig. 3), which represent stiff elements of mechanisms in the model. Mechanical contact between the device and a ground was modelled as reaction forces occurring in "foot" parts of the device when distance between them and the ground is less than the assumed value. The drives of actuators' employ DC motors equipped with reduction gearboxes (Fig. 4). Typical equations (4) - (9) were used for modelling DC motors and gears. Input signals are reference angular displacements of joints expressed in the form of functions approximating experimental data (Fig. 5). Simulation experiments revealed strong relation between length of gait cycle and energy consumption of actuators (Fig. 6). Reduction gear ratio also influences energy needs as well as quality of the device movements (Fig. 8). The model is being currently modified and enhanced in order to be used at the next stages of design process.

Falls are one of the leading causes of disability and premature death among the elderly. Technical solutions designed to automatically detect a fall event may mitigate fall-related health consequences by immediate medical assistance. This paper presents a wearable device called TTXFD based on MPU6050 which can collect triaxial acceleration signals. We have also designed a two-step fall detection algorithm that fuses threshold-based method (TBM) and machine learning (ML). The TTXFD exploits the TBM stage with low computational complexity to pick out and transmit suspected fall data (triaxial acceleration data). The ML stage of the two-step algorithm is implemented on a server which encodes the data into an image and exploits a fall detection algorithm based on convolutional neural network to identify a fall on the basis of the image. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves high sensitivity (97.83%), specificity (96.64%) and accuracy (97.02%) on the open dataset. In conclusion, this paper proposes a reliable solution for fall detection, which combines the advantages of threshold-based method and machine learning technology to reduce power consumption and improve classification ability.

In this paper, an autonomous wearable sensor node is developed for long-term continuous healthcare monitoring. This node is used to monitor the body temperature and heart rate of a human through a mobile application. Thus, it includes a temperature sensor, a heart pulse sensor, a low-power microcontroller, and a Bluetooth low energy (BLE) module. The power supply of the node is a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, but this battery has a limited lifetime. Therefore, a photovoltaic (PV) energy harvesting system is proposed to prolong the battery lifetime of the sensor node. The PV energy harvesting system consists of a flexible photovoltaic panel, and a charging controller. This PV energy harvesting system is practically tested outdoor under lighting intensity of 1000 W/m². Experimentally, the overall power consumption of the node is 4.97 mW and its lifetime about 246 hours in active-sleep mode. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate long-term and sustainable operation for the wearable sensor node.

Opis:
W artykule opisano problem projektowania pasa biodrowego stanowiącego element składowy robota ortotycznego. Pas ten pełni istotną funkcję w mechanicznej strukturze systemu. Dla mechanizmów robota jest on ostoją, czyli zespołem zapewniającym stałe, wzajemne położenie elementów łańcuchów kinematycznych obu kończyn. Z tego względu musi on spełniać wymagania dużej sztywności i określonej wytrzymałości. Pas biodrowy służy ponadto do połączenia systemu z tułowiem użytkownika.
The paper describes a problem related to design of a hip belt, which is a member of an orthotic robot. The belt plays an important role in the mechanical structure of the system. It is a bearing frame for mechanisms of the robot, i.e. it is a unit that ensures a constant mutual position of the members of kinematic chains of both limbs. Because of this fact, it must satisfy requirements pertaining to high rigidity and appropriate mechanical strength. Besides, the hip belt serves also a purpose of connecting the system with the user’s trunk. In this case, the principles related to ergonomics are of utmost importance: it must be easy for the user to put on the system and to use it in a comfortable way. This is connected with a necessity of introducing indispensable mechanical compliances and discontinuities, which makes it difficult to obtain the required strength characteristics. To reconcile these contradictions is a task of the design engineer, who is expected to strike a happy medium. Studies related to the strength, using the finite element method, that were carried out, allowed one to choose a design of the hip belt, which made it possible to reduce the mass of this element and to meet the basic requirements at the same time.

The electrocardiogram is a digital record of effective action potentials of heart muscle fibres, thus it contains an important information about the heart function. Unfortunately, the signal theory-based description of the ECG contents is not efficient in extracting these data, and the practical interpretation software is mostly based on heuristic statements.
