Opis:
The paper presents a proposal for a formalised approach to hull shape optimisation with respect to total resistance, by fine-tuning longitudinal volume distribution. An algorithm for automated modification of the hull is presented, allowing for varying the sectional area distribution with a negligible influence on the resulting displacement. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver STAR-CCM+ and computer computer-aided design (CAD) software NX were used to search the optimal volume distribution of selected parent shapes, with respect to total resistance. The bow part and the aft part were optimised separately. The resulting resistances of the selected optimal shapes were then verified by means of scale model tests, realised in the towing tank at the Maritime Advanced Research Centre (CTO) S.A. A noticeable gain in total resistance was achieved and confirmed by experimental tests. The proposed approach seems to be a promising method for relatively quick parametric optimisation of the designed hull shapes; it is also applicable for generic CFD optimisation studies.

Opis:
An improved cellular automaton has been used to calculate the kinematics of non-cohesive granular materials during confined flow in mass and funnel flow model silos. In this model, based on a gas model of hydrodynamics, collisions and dissipation of particles were taken into account during granular flow. The model allowed for investigations of dilatant zones in granular material during silo flow.

Opis:
We make an attempt to consolidate results from a number of recent studies into spatial patterns of temporal variations in Baltic Sea wave properties. The analysis is based on historically measured and visually observed wave data, which are compared with the results of numerical hindcasts using both simple fetch-based one-point models and contemporary spectral wave models forced with different wind data sets. The focus is on the eastern regions of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland for which long-term wave data sets are available. We demonstrate that a large part of the mismatches between long-term changes to wave properties at selected sites can be explained by the rich spatial patterns in changes to the Baltic Sea wave fields that are not resolved by the existing wave observation network. The spatial scales of such patterns in the open sea vary from >500 km for short-term interannual variations down to about 100 km for long-term changes.

Opis:
Heat waves were analysed on the basis of maximum daily temperature from 24 meteorological stations in Poland. Heat waves are defined as the longest continuous period during which Tmax (daily maximum air temperature) is equal to or higher than 30°C in at least three days, the mean Tmax during the whole heat wave is equal or higher than 30°C and Tmax does not drop below 25°C during the whole period of heat wave duration. Heat waves occur in Poland from April to September with their maximums in July and August. Four-day-long heat waves are most frequent but the longest one lasted 31 days. The most persistent heat waves were in 1994 and 2015. An increasing trend in heat wave frequency and intensity is observed in Poland, however the increase is statistically significant at only about 60% of analysed stations. Four synoptic patterns favouring heat waves have been distinguished. A strong high over the Azores accompanies all of them, as well as slightly higher than normal pressure over Central Europe – this causes calm and sunny weather over Poland. Strong blocking appears over the North Atlantic during heat wave events, proofing that the development of strong heat waves in Poland is related to large scale circulation and that they are not of local origin. The analysis of the impact of soil moisture in months leading up to the development of heat waves should be the next step in analysis.
