Opis:
Floating-type wave energy converter has the advantages of high wave energy conversion efficiency, strong shock resistance ability in rough sea and stable output power. So it is regarded as a promising energy utilization facility. The research on hydrodynamic performance of wave capture buoys is the precondition and key to the wave energy device design and optimization. A simplified motion model of the buoys in the waves is established. Based on linear wave theory, the equations of motion of buoys are derived according to Newton’s second law. The factors of wave and buoys structural parameters on wave energy absorption efficiency are discussed in the China’s Bohai Sea with short wave period and small wave height. The results show that the main factor which affects the dynamic responses of wave capture buoys is the proximity of the natural frequency of buoys to the wave period. And the incoming wave power takes a backseat role to it at constant wave height. The buoys structural parameters such as length, radius and immersed depth, influence the wave energy absorption efficiency, which play significant factors in device design. The effectiveness of this model is validated by the sea tests with small-sized wave energy devices. The establishment methods of motion model and analysis results are expected to be helpful for designing and manufacturing of floating-type wave energy converter.

In this paper, a floating-buoy wave energy converter using hydrostatic transmission system is studied. The entire work progress of wave energy power generation device is introduced, and the hydraulic transmission principles are emphasized through the simulation to verify the feasibility of design principle of hydraulic transmission system. The mathematical model of the accumulator is established and applied in the AMEsim simulation. The simulation results show that the accumulator plays an important role in the wave power hydraulic transmission system and that the correct configuration of accumulator parameters can improve the rapidity and stability of the system work. Experimental results are compared with the simulation results to validate the correctness of the simulation results. This would provide a valuable reference to the optimal design of wave power generation.

We are motivated to study the exploitation of marine energy as a renewable resource because of society’s ever-increasing energy demands, and a concomitant need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, climate-related variations in wave energy should be investigated in order to ensure the stability of its long-term availability. Here, we investigate the potential for wave energy in the Persian Gulf along the southern coasts of Iran. To do so, we have applied the Mike SW numerical model and ECMWF wind field data for a 30-year study, from 1988 to 2017. For this purpose, wave energy was evaluated at six points in the western, northern, southern, and eastern parts of the Persian Gulf. To assess the impacts of climate change, we also consider the wave regime from 2070 to 2099 (for 30 years) following IPCC RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate change scenarios. Our findings suggest that in the present climate, seasonal variations in the mean wave parameters (i.e. wave energy, wave period, and significant wave height) correspond to the lowest wave energy in the summers, and highest in the winters. In the future climate change scenarios, energy level variations generally have similar patterns, with slight modulations in some local areas.

In order to effectively extract and maximize the energy from ocean waves, a new kind of oscillating-body WEC (wave energy converter) with moon pool has been put forward. The main emphasis in this paper is placed on inserting the damping into the equation of heaving motion applied for a complex wave energy converter and expressions for velocity potential added mass, damping coefficients associated with exciting forces were derived by using eigenfunction expansion matching method. By using surface-wave hydrodynamics, the exact theoretical conditions were solved to allow the maximum energy to be absorbed from regular waves. To optimize the ability of the wave energy conversion, oscillating system models under different radius-ratios are calculated and comparatively analyzed. Numerical calculations indicated that the capture width reaches the maximum in the vicinity of the natural frequency and the new kind of oscillating-body WEC has a positive ability of wave energy conversion.

The oscillating buoy wave energy converter (OBWEC) captures wave energy through the undulating movement of the buoy in the waves. In the process of capturing wave energy, the hydrodynamic performance of the buoy plays an important role. This paper designed the “Haida No. 1” OBWEC, in which the buoy adopts a form of swinging motion. In order to further improve the hydrodynamic performance of the buoy, a 2D numerical wave tank (NWT) model is established using ADINA software based on the working principle of the device. According to the motion equation of the buoy in the waves, the influence of the buoy shape, arm length, tilt angle, buoy draft, buoy width, wave height and Power Take-off (PTO) damping on the hydrodynamic performance of the buoy is studied. Finally, a series of physical experiments are performed on the device in a laboratory pool. The experimental results verify the consistency of the numerical results. The research results indicate that the energy conversion efficiency of the device can be improved by optimizing the hydrodynamic performance of the buoy. However, the absorption efficiency of a single buoy for wave energy is limited, so it is very difficult to achieve full absorption of wave energy.

Ocean wave energy is known as a renewable energy resource with high power potential and without negative environmental impacts. Wave energy has a direct relationship with the ocean’s meteorological parameters. The aim of the current study is to investigate the dependency between ocean wave energy flux and meteorological parameters by using data mining methods (DMMs). For this purpose, a feed-forward neural network (FFNN), a cascade-forward neural network (CFNN), and gene expression programming (GEP) are implemented as different DMMs. The modeling is based on historical meteorological and wave data taken from the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC). In all models, wind speed, air temperature, and sea temperature are input parameters. In addition, the output is the wave energy flux which is obtained from the classical wave energy flux equation. It is notable that, initially, outliers in the data sets were removed by the local distribution based outlier detector (LDBOD) method to obtain the best and most accurate results. To evaluate the performance and accuracy of the proposed models, two statistical measures, root mean square error (RMSE) and regression coefficient (R), were used. From the results obtained, it was found that, in general, the FFNN and CFNN models gave a more accurate prediction of wave energy from meteorological parameters in the absence of wave records than the GEP method.

Opis:
Hydraulic cylinders play a vital role in the energy output (PTO) system of an oscillating float-type wave Energy converter, whose function is to convert the mechanical energy captured by the float from the waves into hydraulic energy. The performance of the hydraulic cylinder determines the conversion efficiency of mechanical energy to hydraulic energy in the system; therefore, it is necessary to study the working mechanism of the hydraulic cylinder. This paper takes a self-developed oscillating float-type wave energy converter as the research object, and studies the working mechanism of its hydraulic cylinder, and uses the linear analysis method to derive the critical self-excited vibration curve of the hydraulic cylinder. In addition, the effects of the external load, hydraulic cylinder load mass, stroke length, spring stiffness and piston area on the performance of the hydraulic cylinder were studied by AMESim simulation software. According to the simulation results, a physical model of the hydraulic cylinder is established. Finally, the physical model is tested in a hydrodynamic pool. The test results show that the hydraulic cylinder can stably and efficiently convert mechanical energy into hydraulic energy even under small waves, thus verifying the rationality of the hydraulic cylinder design.

An array of floating point-absorbing wave energy converters (WECs) is usually employed for extracting efficiently ocean wave energy. For deep water environment, it is more feasible and convenient to connect the absorbers array with a floating body, such as a semi-submersible bottom-moored disk, whose function is to act as the virtual seabed. In the present work, an array of identical floating symmetrically distributed cylinders in a coaxial moored disk as a wave energy device is proposed The power take-off (PTO) system in the wave energy device is assumed to be composed of a linear/nonlinear damper activated by the buoys heaving motion. Hydrodynamic analysis of the examined floating system is implemented in frequency domain. Hydrodynamic interferences between the oscillating bodies are accounted for in the corresponding coupled equations. The array layouts under the constraint of the disk, incidence wave directions, separating distance between the absorbers and the PTO damping are considered to optimize this kind of WECs. Numerical results with regular waves are presented and discussed for the axisymmetric system utilizing heave mode with these interaction factors, in terms of a specific numbers of cylinders and expected power production.

This paper presents the results of experimental research focused on wave energy harvesting and its conversion to power Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The harvesting and conversion process was performed using a wave energy converter (WEC) consisting of a lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric ceramic perovskite material and a prototype power electronic circuit. The designed WEC was considered as a power supply for an end node device (END) of an IoT network. The END consisted of a long-range radio module and an electronic paper display. A set of physical experiments were carried out, and the results confirmed that an energy surplus was supplied by WEC compared to the energy consumed by the END. Hence, the proposed scheme was experimentally validated as a convenient solution that could enable the autonomous operation of an IoT device. The use case presented here for the proposed WEC was analysed for selected sea areas on the basis of wave statistics. The novelty of this paper arises from an investigation that confirms that WECs can significantly contribute to the development of wireless and mobile IoT communication powered by freely available sea wave energy.

The aim of this study is to present a Lyapunov function which can be used to derive an intact stability criterion for a ship in random beam seas. First, the mathematical model of the rolling motion of ships in random beam seas is introduced. The random wave excitation is described by a spectrum which is depended on the wave energy spectrum and the amplitude of the moment of roll. This spectrum is generated by a second order linear filter. Second, the methodology of creating a Lyapunov function is explained briefly. Then, there is outlined the way by which Lyapunov function can be used as the intact stability criterion for a ship. The proposed criterion is derived by considering the weather criteria for German naval vessels. Finally, the coherence of the boundary of safe basin obtained by Lyapunov function with the numerical results obtained by Euler-Maruyama Method is presented. From the results it can be deduced that the Lyapunov function can be used to define an intact stability criterion.

Spaced every 500 m, they cover beach topography from dune/cliff crests to a seabed depth of about 15 m. They were decomposed by signal processing techniques to extract the monotonic component of beach topography and to perform a straightforward assessment of wave energy dissipation rates. Three characteristic dissipation patterns were identified: one associated with large nearshore bars and 2–3 zones of wave breaking; a second, to which the equilibrium beach profile concept can be applied; and a third, characterized by mixed behaviour. An attempt was then made to interpret these types of wave energy dissipation in terms of local coastal morphological features and the underlying sedimentary characteristics.

The paper presents results of field and theoretical investigations of wave transformation in the surf zone near the IBW PAN Coastal Research Station in Lubiatowo (Poland, the south Baltic Sea). The study site displays multi-bar cross-shore profiles that intensively dissipate wave energy, mostly induced by breaking. The main field data comprise wave heights and cross-shore bathymetric profiles. Wave transformation is modelled theoretically by two approaches, namely the IBW PAN phase-averaged wave transformation model and the approach based on the hydraulic jump model, developed by Hsu & Lai (2009) for hydrological situations encountered under the actual conditions of two field campaigns – in 1987 and 1996. Discrepancies between the measured data and the model results are discussed. In general, the model results are in good agreement with the in-situ observations. The comparison of the field data with the computational results concerns a part of the surf zone between about 5 m water depth and the first nearshore stable bar, where the depth amounts to ca. 1.2 m.

Consistent cross-shore migration is slightly more likely to happen than the divergent or convergent movements of both lines. Shoreline retreat and advance attain respective rates of 0.7 m day−1 and 0.4 m day−1. Deep-water wave energy of about 50 kJ m−1 constitutes the boundary between shore accumulation and erosion.

Opis:
In the modern world, environmental issues come to the fore. The document of MARPOL for reducing the emission of pollutants into the atmosphere relates to the energy efficiency coefficient EEDI . This coefficient is directly related to the power of the main engine and, accordingly, to the water resistance. The way to reduce the energy efficiency factor EEDI by increasing the relative length \( \frac{L}{ \sqrt[3]{V}} \) of the ship was proposed in this article. To determine the maximum value of the relative length, knowledge of the general strength of the vessel is required. The value of the relative section modulus of an equivalent girder for a small vessel of transitional mode is defined. The result of the graphic solution of two equations is the value of such a relative section modulus. This parameter is required to determine the limiting value of the relative length and to find solutions to reduce the coefficient EEDI . Comparative analysis of the obtained data with the data of the strength and weight of the H-girder with a length similar to the ship was conducted. The formula for determining the limiting value of the relative length was obtained from the equation of general strength. For a preliminary assessment of the future project of the ship, in terms of permissible design accelerations and the possibility of the ship moving against a sea wave of a certain height, a graph was built based on the application of the energy wave criterion EWCand the requirements of various classification societies.

The wave energy, as a clean and non-pollution renewable energy sources, has become a hot research topic at home and abroad and is likely to become a new industry in the future. In this article, to effectively extract and maximize the energy from ocean waves, a vertical axisymmetric wave energy converter (WEC) was presented according to investigating of the advantages and disadvantages of the current WEC. The linear and quadratic equations in frequency-domain for the reactive controlled single-point converter property under regular waves condition are proposed for an efficient power take-off (PTO). A method of damping coefficients, theoretical added mass and exciting force are calculated with the analytical method which is in use of the series expansion of eigen functions. The loads of optimal reactive and resistive, the amplitudes of corresponding oscillation, and the width ratios of energy capture are determined approximately and discussed in numerical results.

The paper deals with a sandy shore located on the open sea side of the Hel Peninsula in Poland (the south Baltic Sea coast). The study site displays a cross-shore profile that intensively dissipates wave energy, mostly due to breaking. The theoretical modelling of wave transformation at this site reveals specific distributions of wave heights and bed shear stresses. The sediment borrow areas, presently used and identified for future exploitation, are located inconveniently far from the periodically re-nourished shores. The paper presents the possibilities of dredging works in the coastal zone that would not disturb the natural nearshore motion of water and sediments. The results of the study can be helpful in formulating generic safety standards, at least with respect to dissipative shores of non-tidal or micro-tidal seas, like the Baltic Sea.

This study employed viable methods for the selection of a preeminent mooring line amongst other alternatives for the mooring of a floating wave energy converter (WEC) in shallow waters. Conventional mooring lines for WEC mooring are identified for an optimal selection exercise. A combination of the Entropy Weight and Visekriterijumska Optimizacijia I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) methods is utilized in the aforementioned exercise. The two methods are effectively used in an assessment of the attributes and performance of various mooring lines in practical application. The result obtained demonstrated that a steel wire rope is the best mooring line suitable for WEC system operations. It constitutes a good reference to marine and offshore engineering industries in decision making related to optimal mooring lines suitable for the mooring of a WEC system in shallow waters.

Wave Power is one of the most investigated energy sources today. So far, several devices have been tested and built up to the pre-commercial stage. ISWEC (Inertial Sea Wave Energy Converter) has developed at the Politecnico di Torino, exploiting gyroscopes to extract wave energy. It allows power extraction without using any moving part immersed into water. The previous version of ISWEC presented 1 DOF (Degree Of Freedom), therefore requiring alignment of the device to the incoming wave; this paper describes a novel version of ISWEC, with 2 DOFs and consequently able to absorb power from every wave direction. The kinematics and the dynamics of the device are investigated, in order to compare the 1 DOF and the 2 DOF architectures from the point of view of the extracted power. The resulting simulations show that the 1 DOF prototype is more efficient when aligned with the incoming wave, while the behavior of the 2 DOF device is substantially independent of the wave direction. Such a difference of the performances is quantified and discussed along with considerations on the design and realization of the full-scale prototype.

The paper presents a prototype design of elastomer energy absorbing panel made in a shape of honeycomb structure. The proposed panel was installed in a protected plate and tested on a specially designed test stand, where a shock wave from a small explosive charge was applied. The elastomer honeycomb structure was compared with a version of the panel made of solid elastomer materials, the same as used in the honeycomb structure and also with a protected plate without any panels. During the research, acceleration in the middle part of each investigated protected plate was recorded. The protected plates were scanned after the tests in order to measure their maximum deformation. Acceleration graphs and maximum deflections of all three considered structures were compared. The obtained results were used to validate numerical models of the designed structures and the test stand. A discreet model of the test stand and models of elastomer panels were developed with HyperMesh FEM software using shell and solid elements. The materials were described using a tabulated Johnson-Cook model and constitutive model for the rubber parts; all available in the material library of Ls-Dyna software. The blast loading was simulated using the CONWEP method. This model generates a boundary condition, based on the experimental data and TNT equivalent mass, which substitutes the wave propagation with a pressure. Finally, the experimental results of acceleration and deformation of the plates were compared with the corresponding results of the numerical analyses carried out using finite element method. The numerical models can be utilised in the future research as a virtual range stand. The developed elastomer honeycomb structure can be modified to meet various requirements of ballistic protection levels, by applying elastomer of different stiffness or optimizing shape and dimensions of the honeycomb structure.

Opis:
Future wireless communication networks will be largely characterized by small cell deployments, typically on the order of 200 meters of radius/cell, at most. Meanwhile, recent studies show that base stations (BS) account for about 80 to 95 % of the total network power. This simply implies that more energy will be consumed in the future wireless network since small cell means massive deployment of BS. This phenomenon makes energy-efficient (EE) control a central issue of critical consideration in the design of future wireless networks. This paper proposes and investigates (the performance of) two different energy-saving approaches namely, adaptive-sleep sectorization (AS), adaptive hybrid partitioning schemes (AH) for small cellular networks using smart antenna technique. We formulated a generic base-model for the above-mentioned schemes and applied the spatial Poisson process to reduce the system complexity and to improve flexibility in the beam angle reconfiguration of the adaptive antenna, also known as a smart antenna (SA). The SA uses the scalable algorithms to track active users in different segments/sectors of the microcell, making the proposed schemes capable of targeting specific users or groups of users in periods of sparse traffic, and capable of performing optimally when the network is highly congested. The capabilities of the proposed smart/adaptive antenna approaches can be easily adapted and integrated into the massive MIMO for future deployment. Rigorous numerical analysis at different orders of sectorization shows that among the proposed schemes, the AH strategy outperforms the AS in terms of energy saving by about 52 %. Generally, the proposed schemes have demonstrated the ability to significantly increase the power consumption efficiency of micro base stations for future generation cellular systems, over the traditional design methodologies.

As the particles originating from point-like entities are associated with infinite self energies, a postulate, that the scalar-potential associated with particles are bounded by a Planck scale potential is introduced. By defining the self energy of a particle, equivalences between charge-energy and mass-energy are obtained. The electromagnetic energy-momentum equation, de-Broglie’s electromagnetic wave-length and frequency for a charge particle in motion are presented resolving the “4/3” discrepancy. The non-covariance nature of the present classical electrodynamics is discussed and how the proposed postulate makes it a fully covariant theorem with the rest of the classical electrodynamics is presented. A way electromagnetic energy-momentum equation could potentially resolve the stability-problem of a charge particle is discussed and thereby a theoretical explanation to electron’s spin is presented.

In this paper, we investigate a problem on reflection and transmission of plane-waves at an interface between two dissimilar half-spaces of a transversely isotropic micropolar piezoelectric material. The entire model is assumed to rotate with a uniform angular velocity. The governing equations of rotating and transversely isotropic micropolar piezoelectric medium are specialized in a plane. Plane-wave solutions of two-dimensional coupled governing equations show the possible propagation of three coupled plane-waves. For an incident plane-wave at an interface between two dissimilar half-spaces, three reflected and three transmitted waves propagate with distinct speeds. The connections between the amplitude ratios of reflected and transmitted waves are obtained. The expressions for the energy ratios of reflected and transmitted waves are also obtained. A numerical example of the present model is considered to illustrate the effects of rotation on the speeds and energy ratios graphically.

This paper aims to address the problems of inaccurate location and large computation in hybrid transmission line traveling wave detection methods. In this paper, a new fault location method based on empirical Fourier decomposition (EFD) and the Teager energy operator (TEO) is proposed. Firstly, the combination of EFD and the TEO is used to detect the time difference between the arrival of the initial traveling wave of the fault at the two measurement ends of the hybrid line. Then, when the fault occurs at the midpoint of each line segment and at the connection point of the hybrid line, the time difference between the arrival of the fault traveling wave at the two measurement ends of the line is calculated according to the line parameters. By comparing the obtained time differences, it is determined whether the fault occurs in the first or second half of the line. Finally, the fault distance is calculated using the double-ended traveling wave method according to the fault section. The model was built on PSCAD and the proposed algorithm was simulated on MATLAB platform. The results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves an average fault location accuracy of 98.88% by adjusting transition resistances and fault distances and comparing with other location methods. After validation, the proposed method for locating faults has a high level of accuracy in location, computational efficiency, and reliability. It can accurately identify fault segments and locations in hybrid transmission line systems.

We derive global in time a priori bounds on higher-level energy norms of strong solutions to a semilinear wave equation: in particular, we prove that despite the influence of a nonlinear source, the evolution of a smooth initial state is globally bounded in the strong topology ∼ H2 x H1. And the bound is uniform with respect to the corresponding norm of the initial data. It is known that an m-accretive semigroup generator moriotoni-cally propagates smoothness of the initial condition; however, this result does not hold in general for Lipschitz perturbations of monotone systems where higher order Sobolev norms of the solution may blowup asymptotically as t → ∞. Due to nonlinearity of the system, the only a priori global-in-time bound that follows from classical methods is that on finite energy: ∼ H1 x L2. We show that under some correlation between growth rates of the damping and the source, the norms of topological order above the finite energy level remain globally bounded. Moreover, we also establish this result when damping exhibits sublinear or superlinear growth at the origin, or at infinity, which has immediate applications to asymptotic estimates on the decay rates of the finite energy. The approach presented in the paper is not specific to the wave equation, and can be extended to other hyperbolic systems: e.g. plate, Maxwell, and Schrodinger equations.

Intensive development of the industry, limited access to fossil deposits and pollutions that are inevitable as a result of the exploitation, forcing the search for new green sources of energy, less harmful to the environment. One of such solutions can be produced energy from tides and low tides and sea temperature difference of surface water (tidal energy, wave energy and ocean thermal energy).

Opis:
The process of formation of the energy field by the explosion of a conical charge has been mathematically simulated. The features of the development of the energy field, depending on the point of initiation of the truncated cone explosive charge, were determined. The complex nature of the use of a charge at the bottom of a borehole with an intermediate conically-shaped detonator is discussed. Possible technological directions for using a charge with a complex shape are proposed.

Opis:
In this article we focus on the global well-posedness of the differential equation u [...] in Omega x(O, T), where j' denotes the derivative of a C1 convex and real valued function j. The interaction between degenerate damping and a source term constitutes the main challenge of the problem. Problems with non-degenerate damping (k = 0) have been studied in the literature (Georgiev and Todorova, 1994; Levine and Serrin, 1997; Vitillaro, 2003). Thus the degeneracy of monotonicity is the main novelty of this work. Depending on the level of interaction between the source and the damping we characterize the domain of the parameters p, m, k, n (see below) for which one obt ains existence, regularity or finite time blow up of solutions. More specifically, when p [is less than or equal to] m + k global existence of generalized solutions in H1 x L2 is proved. For p > m + k, solutions blow up in a finite time. Higher energy solutions are studied as well. For H2 x H1 initial data we obtain both local and global solutions with the same regularity. Higher energy solutions are also proved to be unique.

Opis:
Electromagnetic energy can alter metabolic and biosynthetic processes and under certain parameters of pulsed EMF it can change pulse repetition frequency, operation cycle, power, exposure, as well as it can slow down and inhibit cell growth. MW irradiation range of RNA and DNA - containing virus reduces their infectivity. Inhibition of bacterial cultures growth, changes in phagocytic activity of protein biosynthesis, ultrastructural changes in the cells when exposed to EMF EHF. It was found in experiments with micro-organisms that biological effects of EMF on microorganisms wore a resonant character. One of the basic mechanisms of inhibitory action of EHF radiation on harmful microorganisms is the role of membranes in biological reactions of microorganisms on the EMR.

Opis:
The article presents spatial characteristics of energy fluxes recorded in the area of the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the four-year period of 2013–16. Data presented in this work are based on results of forecast calculations with application of numerical models of the atmosphere (HIRLAM) and sea (WAM and HIROMB). Conducted analyses were concerned with dynamics of physical phenomena above the sea surface (wind), on its surface (wind waves motion), and in its near-surface layer up to 4 m (seawater flows). Physical energy resources connected with these processes for subsequent four years were computed and compared with the amount of annual electricity output generated by conventional and renewable sources of energy. Such an analysis of estimated energy resources reveals that the resource are highly differentiated in terms of space and in individual years, and significantly exceed the annual production of Polish power plants.

Opis:
Among of modern papers devoted to numerical modeling of rotated waves the greater part of papers are based on assumption that such wave propagates with velocity equals to the Chapman-Jouguet velocity of ideal detonation model with plane front. But the experimental velocities of rotated detonation waves, as a rule, are less (and even much less) the velocity of ideal Chapman-Jouguet detonation. Such regimes are named as low-velocity detonation or quasi-detonation and its characteristics are practically not investigated carefully. Moreover, similar to the spinning detonation, the strong connection of velocity of rotated transverse waves with the acoustic waves of reaction products was observed. So the new model with an allowance for the losses of impulse and energy must be used at numerical modeling of RDE and new experimental investigations of regimes with understated velocity must be carried out. In given paper some important aspects of rotated detonation waves and new experimental results are analyzed: the multifront system of rotated waves; correlation of rotation velocity of waves with acoustic characteristics of reaction products; streak-records trajectory of rotated waves on moving film; pressure and temperature profiles of rotating waves; velocity deficit and energy-release.
