Opis:
Chloride waters in the Polish Flysch Carpathians are remnants of marine sedimentation water which was chemically and isotopically changed due to ultrafiltration and the release of dehydration water (diagenetic water) during the burial diagenesis of clay minerals. In the western part of the study area, the diagenetic end-member is characterized by δ18O and δ2H values of about +6.5 and –30.0‰, respectively, and Cl– content in the range of 3.8 and 13.8 g/dm3. In some fault areas, such waters migrate to the surface and mix with local meteoric waters as indicated by mixing lines in δ18O–δ2H and δ18O–Cl– graphs. In several wells of the eastern part, waters containing a significant proportion of marine water occur. However, in majority of deep wells, mixtures of diagenetic and meteoric waters of Quaternary and pre-Quaternary climates are present, as deduced from δ18O–Cl– linear relations. In most cases, they do not exhibit linear relations also expected in δ18O–δ2H graphs due to the shifts of δ2H to heavier isotopic values supposedly caused by involvement of water in the generation of hydrocarbons.

Opis:
The paper presents a study on the content of selected chemical components in waters of the low moor peatland “Błoto Kraków” and the navigable canal Budzień–Krępa running across the peatland. Samples of water from the peatland and from the canal were collected three times during the vegetation period, in April, August and October. Also soil samples were collected, from the surface horizon of the peatland. The soil samples were characterised by a low degree of degradation of accumulated organic matter, an acidic reaction and a low ash content. The peatland waters were characterised by statistically significantly higher levels of most of the assayed ions and statistically significantly higher mineralisation compared to the canal waters. Also the content of nutrients – nitrate, ammonium and phosphate ions, was statistically significantly higher in the peatland waters. In the case of the content of heavy metals, the peatland waters were characterised by statistically significantly higher levels of iron, manganese and nickel, relative to water sampled from the canal. No statistically significant differences were noted in the content of lead and copper. This may mean that, under conditions of acidic reaction, certain elements are liberated from the sorptive complex of the peatland soils, and migrate to surface waters, causing their contamination.

Opis:
Chemical composition, organoleptic and physicochemical properties of natural groundwaters are varied and dependent on their geological environment. Determining the basic organoleptic properties – such as colour, taste, odour – as well as physical properties – such as electrical conductivity or redox potential – allow us to assess the stability of water chemical composition. Based on their origin, groundwaters can be divided into infiltration, as well as condensation, juvenile, metamorphic and relic groundwaters, which are currently of lesser value. Groundwaters sourced in Poland belong to various chemical types and play an important role in balneotherapy and the bottling industry. Of particular importance are thermal, bicarbonate, chloride or sulphate type waters. There is also a growing interest in humic waters found in the Wielkopolska region.

Opis:
Mineralized waters used for medical treatment are common in the Sudetes. Due to reservoir rock types and the depth of groundwater circulation, two main types of groundwater deposits are distinguished. These are fissure deposits, the most often present in granites and gneisses, andfissure-porous deposits present first of all in sandstones. The main types of mineralized groundwater are CO2-rich waters, containing up to 99.5% of CO2 as the primary gas component, thermal waters characterized by the temperatures up to 87°C, which classifies these waters as the warmest in Poland, as well as radon waters, containing the highest activity concentrations of 222Rn, reaching above 2,000 Bq/dm3. All these groundwater types are infiltration waters. Discharge rates of the intakes in the Sudetes changes with time, which is influenced by changes in atmospheric parameters. The time of reaction is similar for all the intakes in the same hydrogeological structure. The process of mixing between the highly-mineralized, deep-circulation groundwater component and the shallow-circulation, low-mineralized component is intensely studied. Another problem is the presence of CO2 in the amount exceeding its solubility in the water. Juvenile CO2 flows from the deep crust through tectonic discontinuities, where it dissolves in groundwater, forming CO2-oversaturated waters, as well as itforms gas anomalies in soil air. CO2 concentrations may reach in soils more than 60 vol.%, and the flux of this gas reaches even 66 g/m2/d. Radon dissolves in groundwater in the zone of its out flow, where reservoir rocks are densely cracked, weathered, and cut by tectonic faults. The hydrogeochemical background of 222Rn in groundwater of the Sudetes is between 4 and 306 Bq/dm3.

Opis:
Dissolved and particulate activities of caesium-137 are presented for the coastal and open southern Baltic Sea waters, fluvial waters (the Vistula and Swina rivers) and lagoon waters (the Vistula Lagoon) during 1996-1999 and compared to those collected before the Chernobyl accident. 137Cs was measured in the Baltic Sea waters at different depths as well as 0.2-0.3 m above the sea bed. In a layer of the Gdafsk Bay waters (the Gdafsk Deep location), extending from the surface down to 1-2 meters above the sea bed, the caesium-137 concentrations ranged between 57 and 66 Bq m-3 in 1999, whereas in the layer situated 0.2-0.3 m above the sea bed its concentration increased up to 87 Bq m-3. This phenomenon was also observed in 1994 and 1998. The concentrations of caesium-137 in riverine suspended particulate matter (r SPM) are lower than in the marine SMP (m SMP) and its activity attains respectively 36 and 222 Bq kg-1 based on dry weight. The proportion of caesium-137 in the suspended form in the Baltic Sea waters does not exceed 2 per cent, while in the fluvial suspended form it is as high as 55 per cent.

Opis:
Due to the favourable geothermal conditions in Hungary, where the geothermal gradient is about 1.5 times greater than the world average, the country has numerous centers, which use geothermal waters directly for heating, recreation, or bottling purposes. There are plenty of thermal and mineral water springs, most of which were known even 4000 years ago. This article presents different applications of geothermal waters, illustrated with examples of spas, recreation and balneology centers like the largest spa complexes in Europe - Szechenyi Spa and 500 years old Rudas Spa located in Budapest, Egerszalók with unique travertine deposit or Miscolctapolca in the area of Miskolc where a thermal karstic cave system originally carved and dissolved by the water in karstified Triassic limestone was transformed into a complex of geothermal swimming pools. The dynamic development of the geothermal energy uses system in Veresegyhaz, which total installed thermal capacity is nearly 13 MW with the total track length of 15 km geothermal pipe line, classify the Veresegyhaz as one of the most extended geothermal systems in Hungary.

Opis:
Na podstawie charakterystyki hydrochemicznej leczniczych wód siarczkowych wyróżniono jeden typ hydrochemiczny – Cl-Na, H2S, I – występujący w trzech różnowiekowych seriach skalnych: neogenu, kredy górnej i jury górnej.
The paper shows the characteristics of sulphurous waters from the Ponidzie area. Physical and chemical properties of waters have been determined on the basis of results of analysis of the archived data from boreholes in Busko-Zdrój, Solec-Zdrój, Las Winiarski, Wełnin and Dobrowoda. The treatment profile of these waters is constrained by a high concentration of bivalent sulphur, measured as the amount of free hydrogen sulphide. The waters also contain many iodine, bromine and fluorine compounds. One hydrochemical type – Cl-Na, H2S, I – has been distinguished on the basis of the hydrochemical characteristics of the therapeutic waters. They occur in three different rock series: Neogene, Cretaceous and Upper Jurassic. It has been found that all of the waters have total dissolved solids (TDS) from 8.5 to 40.7 g/dm3 and the hydrogen sulphide content varies from 6.8 to 1064.0 mg/dm3. The research results prove that the variety of rock settings is one of the most important reasons for the water chemistry differentiation. In general, the chemical composition of thermal waters in this region is determined by the interaction between groundwater and different rock environments.

Opis:
This article is focused on the aspects related to the occurrence and the behavior of REE in hydrosphere. Particular attention is given to the natural waters of Europe including Poland. The data shown in this work are based on the studies and discussions published elsewhere, as well as on own investigations of REE concentrations in the natural waters of Poland (ground- and surface waters). The aim of this article is to present information on REE in different types of waters (ocean, ground- and surface waters). Potential sources of REE in the selected waters and factors affecting their concentrations and distribution patterns (signatures) are discussed. The input of REE originating from human activity is indicated and some examples of anthropogenic factors are presented. Additionally, some general information on natural REE abundances in various environmental compartments and their applications in the industry are provided. The potential influence of some major components on determination of europium content in water samples during measurements by mass spectrometry is also explained.
