Opis:
Certain contaminants are termed as emerging (Contaminants of Emerging Concern, CEC) since all aspects of these pollutants are not known and their regulation is not ununiform across the nations. The CECs include many classes of compounds that are used in various industries, plant protection chemicals, personal care products and medicines. They accumulate in waterbodies, soils, organisms including humans. They cause deleterious effects on plant animal and human health. Therefore, alternative greener synthesis of these chemicals, sustainable economic methods of waste disposal, scaling up and circular methods using sludge for removing the contaminants are innovative methods that are pursued. There are several improvements in chemical waste treatments using electro-oxidation coupled with solar energy, high performing recycled granular activated charcoal derived from biomass are few advances in the field. Similarly, use of enzymes from microbes for waste removals is a widely used technique for bioremediation. The organisms are genetically engineered to remove hazardous chemicals, dyes, and metals. Novel technologies for mining economically the precious and rare earth elements from e-waste can improve circular economy. However, there is additional need for participation of various nations in working towards greener Earth. There should be pollution awareness in local communities that can work along with Government legislations.

Aluminium slag waste is a residue from aluminium recycling activities, classified as hazardous waste so its disposal into the environment without processing can cause environmental problems, including groundwater pollution. There are 90 illegal dumping areas for aluminium slag waste spread in the Sumobito District, Jombang Regency. This study aims to evaluate the quality of shallow groundwater surrounding aluminium slag disposal in the Sumobito District for drinking water. The methods applied an integrated water quality index (WQI) and heavy metal pollution index (HPI), multivariate analysis (principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA)), and geospatial analysis for assessing groundwater quality. The field campaign conducted 40 groundwater samples of the dug wells for measuring the groundwater level and 30 of them were analysed for the chemical contents. The results showed that some locations exceeded the quality standards for total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), and Al2+ . The WQI shows that 7% of dug well samples are in poor drinking water condition, 73% are in good condition, and 20% are in excellent condition. The level of heavy metal contamination based on HPI is below the standard limit, but 13.3% of the water samples are classified as high contamination. The multivariate analysis shows that anthropogenic factors and natural sources/geogenic factors contributed to shallow groundwater quality in the study area. The geospatial map shows that the distribution of poor groundwater quality is in the northern area, following the direction of groundwater flow, and is a downstream area of aluminium slag waste contaminants.

This study aims to assess the quality of lagoon water used as a dumping ground for shrimp farming waste. The research uses the descriptive method. The research was conducted at the Shrimp Cultivation Site in the Banaran Kulon Progo Village, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The research focuses on physicochemical parameters, including temperature, pH, total suspended solid (TSS), dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonium (NH4-N), nitrate (NO3-N), and phosphate. The sampling technique is based on SNI 6989.57:2008. Sampling was carried out 48 times in 3 lagoons during rainy and dry seasons. Dialysis data was descriptively classified with the help of Storage and Retrieval of Water Quality Data System (STORET) and water quality was generally classified as C (moderately polluted) and D (heavily polluted) categories in dry and rainy seasons. The results showed that in the rainy season the highest pH, nitrate and phosphate levels of 8.3, and 6.1 and 20.8 mg∙dm-3, were up to 15% less than in the dry season in the same point. Thus, it can be concluded that these values from the STORET in the dry season are larger than those in the rainy season. The study results are expected to become a basis for the evaluation of the quality of shrimp farming wastewater so that environmental health can be controlled and the risk of waste pollution reduced.

The waste warm waters from power plants, owing to their temperature regime (25–38°C) and the volumes of discharge, allow for their use for heating of open ground areas in agriculture. Underground heating by such water is a new, special heat and irrigation method which enables not only purposeful regulation of temperature conditions of the crop growing environment, but also dissipates heat in the soil, thus cooling the water for its reuse. This makes it possible to reduce the thermal pollution of water sources.

Many industries, especially mining and metallurgy, deal with solutions containing ions. In some cases, these metal ions need to be concentrated and recovered from solutions and sometimes removed from wastewater. The ion flotation method has been applied for wastewater and water treatment, recovery of precious and platinum group metals, preconcentrating of rare earth elements, selective separation of multicomponent ions from dilute solutions, and analytical chemistry. It has been employed to separate heavy metals from a liquid phase using bubble attachment, originated in mineral processing. In these cases, ion flotation has an important place among other methods because it is a cheap and practical method. In this study, many ion flotation studies, especially applied at laboratory scale, were reviewed. This method gives very successful and promising results in removing heavy metals with toxic effects from wastewater and selective separation of metal ions from very low concentrated solutions. Ion flotation may take place in industrial scale operations with the new developments in flotation machines and collectors with better selectivity, high efficiency, lower cost, and environmental friendliness.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) discharged into environment has several adverse impacts. PPCPs are widely utilised for veterinary as well as cosmetic and personal health reasons. These are members of the expanding class of substances known as Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs). Antibiotic resistance in the environment and garbage generated by PPCP endanger life. The World Health Organisation (WHO) now recognises antibiotic resistance as a significant global health problem due to the expected increase in mortality caused by it. In the past ten years, mounting data has led experts to believe that the environment has a significant impact on the development of resistance. For human diseases, the external environment serves as a source of resistance genes. It also serves as a major pathway for the spread of resistant bacteria among various habitats and human populations. Large-scale DNA sequencing methods are employed in this thesis to better comprehend the dangers posed by environmental antibiotic resistance. The quantification of the number is an important step in this process. Metagenomic measurement of the number of antibiotic resistance genes in various contexts is a crucial step in this process. However, it’s also crucial to put this data into a broader context by integrating things like taxonomic information, antibiotic concentrations, and the genomic locations of found resistance genes.

One of the rational ways of energy saving is to use the heat of wastewater from energy companies for open ground heating and cultivation crops. The most significant sources of heat are thermal and nuclear power plants that produce low-thermal waters of 28-35°C. Heating of the ground with the use of circulating warm water allows to increase temperature at all points of the soil profile. The maximum thermal effect from heating ground is observed at the depth of pipe heaters (7.3- 11.1°C). Ground heating allows to extend the growing season for crops by 3-4 weeks, which can expedite harvesting and thus maximise the harvest. In natural moisture conditions, ground heating does not lead to significant reduction of moisture reserves in the active layer throughout the growing period. There is a redistribution of moisture in a soil profile. It decreases in the zone of pipe heaters and redistributes toward the top. The formation of the nutrient regime changes, the content of mobile phosphorus and potassium, and nitrate nitrogen increases, whereas the content of ammonia nitrogen is reduced. Ground heating is a new special heat reclamation technique. It allows not only to control temperature of the agricultural crop environment, but also to dissipate heat in the ground, and promote the utilisation of waste heat and the stabilisation of the environment.

Opis:
Purpose This paper aims to prepare depolymerized polyethylene terephthalate (DPET) powder from recycled plastic water bottles. Adding this DPET powder to the cement mortar was also studied. Design/methodology/approach The adopted PET depolymerization process includes the usage of both ethylene glycol (EG) as solvent and nano-MgO as a catalyst. A bubble column reactor was designed for this process. Five different mortar groups were made; each has different DPET content of 0%, 1%, 3%, 6% and 9% as a sand replacement. The flexural strength test and the water absorption measurement are done after two curing periods: 7 and 28 days. Findings The research finding demonstrated that the flexural strength of mortar was reduced by increasing the DPET powder percentage and the maximum dropping was 15% when 9% of DPET was added. The ability of the mortar to absorb the water was reduced by 14.5% when DPET powder was 9%. The mortar microstructure is featured with fewer cavities and porosity. Research limitations/implications This work’s employed bubble column technique is limited only to the laboratory environment and needs to be scaled up within industrial mass production. For future research, it is suggested to decrease depolymerization time by using smaller pieces of plastic water bottle waste and trying other types of nanocatalyst. Practical implications The modified mortar can be utilized in areas where moisture, rainfalls, and sanitation systems exist. Originality/value The article claims that depolymerized waste PET improves chemical process efficiency by lowering reaction time and improving mass and heat transfer rates. Besides, this approach saves money. It is found out that the depolymerized plastic waste is much more functional due to its high cohesion capability than being used as small PET pieces.

The regulations of the European Union impose concrete responsibilities on the Member States related to treatment of urban waste. Poland has not been meeting them, that is why in February 2022 the European Commission started proceedings that – according to the estimate of the Ministry of Marine Economy and Inland Navigation (now the Ministry of Infrastructure) – may result in fines up to almost six billion EUR. NIK signalled this threat already in 2012. Still, the latest audit indicates that, although more than a decade has passed since then, municipalities usually do not have data on the number of inhabitants using their sewage systems, nor on those using onsite treatment systems, or drainless reservoirs. Also, municipalities do not measure the waste water produced in their area. In this situation, it is difficult to plan investments properly. This is one of several irregularities that have led to this strict stance of the European Commission. The article presents the findings of the NIK audit in detail. It comprised the following entities: the Ministry of Infrastructure, the National Board for Water Management of the State Water Management Entity “Polish Waters” (PGW WP; Wody Polskie), the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW), 16 regional funds for environmental protection and water management (wfośgw), as well as 44 municipalities and 44 waterworks and sewage system companies. NIK audited the measures taken by public administration bodies and their subordinate entities as for ensuring a comprehensive collection of urban waste and its proper treatment. The audit comprised, among other, planning, implementation, monitoring, coordination and supervision of activities related to waste water management.

Opis:
The study carried out an analysis of solid waste disposal and its implication for water quality in the Ugep Community, located in Yakurr’s Local Government Council of Cross River State, Nigeria. Findings revealed that there is a significant and adverse relationship between solid waste disposal methods and the quality of drinking water, along with domestic uses in the study area. Data was collected through the administration of 500 questionnaires, with family heads as points of primary contact. It was clear that the poor state of infrastructural development and the challenge of availability and access to requisite amenities, coupled with inefficient management of the few available resources, has further exposed inhabitants to health and welfare issues. Results indicate a significant relationship between the solid waste disposal (sanitation) method and water quality in the study area. Awareness creation on sanitary practices by health and related government agencies, as well as community members themselves, should be encouraged to participate, as it will ensure a sustainable and health-oriented waste disposal system, bearing in mind likely concerns for water quality. Contamination of water is more prevalent in stored water, especially at the point of usage, as compared to where water flows freely, and is used without being stored. If water quantity is massive, the challenge of low quality is easily resolved, as less sanitation problems would occur. Government and private organisations should implement and encourage economic empowerment initiatives, in order to improve the livelihoods of the residents of the community.

Opis:
The processing of Mollusca for food consumption generates a large amount of by-products; for instance, shells, which may contaminate and deposit in the marine coastal environment. Therefore, additional processing is needed to reduce and transform shells into valuable materials, such as chitosan or another derivate product. This study aimed to isolate and characterize the chitosan from Solen vagina (known as lorjuk shells in Indonesian) and to determine the application of chitosan. This is to be compared with Solen vagina shell powder that commonly functions as bio-sorbent of water pollutants Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+. The isolated chitosan was characterized based on its physicochemical properties, namely purity as tested by using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and functional group as confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). In addition, bio-absorbent ability was evaluated through a column method, where the chitosan products are used and compared with Solen vagina shell powders. In this study, the chitosan isolated from Solen vagina shells yielded 15.92 ± 1.78% and showed a high deacetylation degree (DD) by 85.00 ± 3.98%. FTIR and physicochemical properties analysis confirmed that the isolated chitosan is of good quality, as standardized by industry regulator; thus, it could be used as food product and bioabsorbent material. Moreover, the bio-absorbent ability of chitosan demonstrated a similar value with S. vagina shell powders, which can absorb more than 92% of heavy metals around second elution. In conclusion, the S. vagina shell powder and the isolated chitosan have the potential as natural bio-absorbent to reduce the heavy metal contents in industrial wastewater.

The technologies associated with the use of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) are becoming one of the dynamically developing directions in the wastewater disposal system. However, a certain part of the used design of membrane units are exposed to mechanical contamination, which significantly impairs their performance. This is especially noticeable when working at wastewater treatment plants, where the required degree of preliminary cleaning from solid mechanical particles and suspended solids is not provided. The purpose of the work was to improve the process of post-treatment of urban wastewater and protect the membrane element of the installation from clogging with coarse impurities and wear, with an overestimated concentration of suspended solids. The essence of the improved membrane technology of wastewater treatment consists in the preliminary capture of heavy and suspended particles with a size of more than 0.03 microns in a hydrocyclone, followed by water treatment in a chamber of a membrane bioreactor of modern design. The operating conditions of the membranes were determined by the operating modes and parameters of the bioreactor, in particular, by the degree of formation of colloidal compounds in it, which adversely affect the permeability. The density of the initial water varied within 1.059–1.078 g/cm3, and the content of solid particles was up to 0.3 mm. The activated sludge was filtered under vacuum on a Buchner funnel through a thin layer of cotton wool and gauze. During the tests, the indicators for capturing suspended solids were 5.0–9.0 mg/dm3, whereas, when working without a hydrocyclone, they were equal to 27–30 mg/dm3. The maximum performance of the hydrocyclone is provided at an inlet pressure of 225–300 kPa, and the pressure loss in the hydrocyclone chamber is 7.9–9.0 kPa. It was established that additional preparation of waste water for the post-treatment process using a hydrocyclone increases the cleaning capacity of membrane elements by reducing the load of accumulation of coarse impurities on the membrane surface.

Opis:
Water retention in soil plays a key role in the context of water scarcity connected with climate change. Under the conditions of the laboratory experiment, the effect of the addition of mineral wool from crops grown under cover and municipal sewage sludge on the water retention and heavy metal (Pb, Zn, and Cd) leaching performance of the medium soil was evaluated. Sewage sludge and mineral wool, widely applied in a range of soil reclamation technologies, were found to have a beneficial and diversified impact on the soil water properties and heavy metal mobility.
