Opis:
In the recent decade Poland was repeatedly affected with severe droughts that caused significant losses in the agricultural sector. To minimize the effects of hydrological drought and rationalize the management of water for agricultural purposes, a continuous monitoring of ground water should be implemented country-wide. Such a monitoring network already exists in Poland ? State Groundwater Monitoring, based upon direct measurements, however its density and temporal resolution is too coarse to effectively inform about the levels of groundwater and its availability for agriculture. The existing monitoring network can be supplemented with various remote geophysical methods, allowing wide-area estimations on groundwater availability. This publication aims at screening available geophysical methods and their suitability for assessing groundwater levels and stocks.

The aim of the presented research was to analyze the relation between three variables: the daily sum of precipitation, the surface water level and the groundwater level in the Różany Strumień basin located in Poznań, Poland. The correlation coefficient for the subsequent lags for each pair of variables time series has been calculated. The delay with which waters of the basin respond to precipitation varies significantly. Generally, stronger response to rainfall is observed for surface water levels as opposed to groundwater levels.

The aim of the article is to analyse hydraulic conditions of water flow in a fish pass. The test facility is part of the Pomiłowo barrage in the commune of Sławno, Poland. The authors applied HEC-RAS software for modelling hydraulic parameters of the water flow in the fish pass. The data from field measurements was implemented in the software and calculations of changes in the water table in the fish pass were made. The results confirmed the usefulness of HEC-RAS software for estimating hydraulic parameters of water flow in a fish pass. HEC-RAS software enables to take into account the parameters responsible for the phenomena accompanying the flow through a fish pass. Selecting mathematical model parameters (coefficients) should be preceded by a multidimensional analysis of the facility. More precise information on hydraulics, hydrology and biology of the test fish pass are also required.

Opis:
Water-table levels in the Kamienna River drainage basin, SE Poland, are presently measured at 14 observation points within the groundwater observation-research network of the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute, included in the monitoring programme during the period 1979–2007. They exhibit multi-year changes in groundwater storage near the observation points. The best documented cycle is that for the period 1982–2002, observed in the wells monitoring water in fractured-karstic formations, where the amplitude of the water-table level was 45 m at that time. The retention balance in the cycle was negative. At the beginning of the cycle, the water table in the fractured-karstic aquifers was 1.40 to 1.94 m higher than at the end. Further observations of the multi-year changes in retention will be the basis for possible corrections to calculations of groundwater resources in this drainage basin, as well as for model predictions of resources, performed for water management in connection with potential climate change.

Opis:
Peatland is a significant storage of carbon and nitrogen on the earth’s surface. This paper reviews the impacts of changes in water table level and mineral nitrogen associated with human activities on greenhouse gases emissions in tropical peatland and northern boreal and temperate peatland, and evaluates the optimal water table level to minimize greenhouse gases emissions. CH4 emission increased significantly with the rise of ground water table level above -20 cm, and larger in northern peatland with plant mediated CH4 emission than tropical peatland with plant mediated oxygen supply. However, forest disturbance by fire in tropical peatland increased CH4 flux to the similar level in northern peatlands (8.3 mg C m-2 h-1) due to stagnant surface water associated with the peat subsidence. On the other hand, CO2 and N2O emissions were significantly lager in tropical peatland than in northern peatland especially due to nitrogen fertilization. CO2 and N2O emissions increased with falling ground water table level below -40 to -80 cm (19 Mg C ha-1 y-1 for CO2 and 700 kg N ha-1 y-1 for N2O). Total global warming potential was significantly low in the ground water table level from -20 and -40 cm.

Opis:
Celem badań było rozpoznanie litologicznych warunków występowania pierwszego poziomu wód gruntowych w rejonie wsi Haćki na Równinie Bielskiej. W trakcie badań wykonano pomiary poziomu wody w studniach kopanych, sondowania świdrem ręcznym do głębokości 5 m, pobrano próbki utworów wodonośnych i zbadano ich uziarnienie. W oparciu o wyniki analiz uziarnienia obliczono współczynnik filtracji.
The aim of the study was to examine lithological conditions of the water table in the area of Haćki village located in the Bielska Plain. The study involved the measurements of water level in dug wells, hand drill probing to a depth of 5 m, acquiring the samples of water-bearing deposits and analysing their granulation. The results of analyses allowed to calculate the permeability coefficient. The geological structure of the area is dominated by dusty deposits of various origins. Such deposits’ formation directly affects the conditions of filtration and depth of the water table. Groundwater logging near Haćki village in the Bielska Plain appears at a depth of several tens of centimeters to 2 meters in the depressions field and up a little over 5 meters in the case of higher ground surfaces. The presence of perched water was revealed on the hills, periodic leachates at the foot of the hills and scarps and one periodic spring. Water-bearing deposits are medium sands, fine sands and loamy fine sands or fine sands with silt. Consequently, the permeability coefficient is low or even very low. Its values range from 0,001 m·d-1 to 3,8 m d-1 (d – 24 hours). The widespread presence of dusty deposits in the area affects the limited efficiency of the water table.

Opis:
The purpose of this study is to predict the contribution of the water table in moistening the root zone using theoretical and empirical equations containing the parameters of evapotranspiration, crop factor, and capillary rise in relation to the hydrophysical properties of soil. Five alluvial (clay) soil profiles located at middle Nile Delta were investigated for the application of the assumed equations. Four areas of soils were cultivated with wheat and clover in the winter and maize in the summer, and citrus trees in 2014/2015 growing season. Soil samples from the investigated areas were subjected to chemical and physical analyses. Water table depths were determined using field piezometers in the same places where the soil samples were collected. The other hydro-physical parameters were estimated. It was found that the water table contributed 20-40% of the irrigation water applied to the root zone in winter and 20% or less during the summer in the studied soils areas. An equation was derived to estimate the sorptivity (S) under dry conditions and at steady state infiltration. It was observed that S is decreased from unsaturated state to steady-state infiltration by 23.1 to 45.7% in cultivated soils and to 55.2% in uncultivated soil. Infiltration functions were estimated. It was suggested that the sorptivity at the steady infiltration rate (steady sorptivity, Sw) may be used to predict the hydraulic conductivity and the basic infiltration rate Ib. The calculated values of Ib by Sw corresponded to those obtained by infiltration experiment. This confirmed the significance of steady Sw as a new functional infiltration parameter. Also, data showed that the values of K(θ) calculated by the proposed equations were in the common ranges for such soils. The equations used (models) related K(θ) to soil pore radius (r) which were in turn based on soil hydraulic data including water retention h(θ), field basic infiltration rate, water sorptivity (S) and the distribution density function f(r) of soil pore size. The steady Sw parameter was used in the prediction of the hydraulic conductivity K(θ) and the basic (steady) infiltration rate Ib. It was concluded that in winter the water table contributed 20-40% of irrigation water applied to the root zone and less than 20% during the summer in the studied soils areas. These values should be considered in calculating the crop water requirements.

In the Brda River outwash plain - the largest and the most typical landform of this kind in Poland (Galon, 1972) - there are 10 observation wells of the monitoring network of the Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute. Analysis ofgroundwater level observations for the period of 2003-2016, obtained from the monitoring network, show a long-term trend of water table lowering. In most cases the groundwater table has been below the monthly average water level since 2006. In order to correlate the water table and weather data from the meteorological station in Chojnice, numerical simulations were performed using HYDRUS1D (Šimůnek et al. 2016) - vadose zone software package, based on the Richards equation. A one-dimensional model of the vadose zone was developed to simulate groundwater recharge, applying different bottom boundary conditions (Constant Pressure Head or Free Drainage) considering bare soil evaporation or root water uptake of the grass cover.
