    This research focuses on the ground water quality index in Ado-Ekiti State, Nigeria. Groundwater sample wells were randomly collected and their spatial locations captured using a handheld GPS. Water samples were taken from 45 wells and their physio-chemical properties were analyzed in the laboratory. Spatial distribution maps of the water quality parameters were then developed. Herein, the Kriging method of interpolation from geospatial analyst wizard in Esri ArcGIS software was deployed in the generation of thematic maps of water quality parameters. A drinking water quality index was subsequently developed to describe the overall quality of groundwater in the study area. Laboratory analysis of 34 wells showed water of acceptable use as it conforms to WHO standard, while 11 wells were found to have unsuitable water for domestic use. The results further show spatial variation in the water quality. The south central depicts poor water quality, fair water quality in the south-east, while the North, north east, north-west down to the south west depicted the best water quality.

    According to historical records, the dam was first built in the 19th century to power a water mill. In this article, the main attention focused on the main physical-mechanic properties of concrete samples taken from Bražuolė dam – first officially removed dam in Lithuania (in 2020). The purpose of these investigations based on field research is to establish actual quantities of compression strength, density, and water absorption by weight of concrete used in the retaining walls of Bražuolė dam. The concrete water absorption by mass (Wm) and compression strength (fck) testing results based on research data of concrete samples from Bražuolė hydroscheme retaining walls do not meet the requirements of currently valid technical construction regulation.

    Opis:
    Free living amoebae (FLA) are amphizoic protozoa that are widely found in various environmental sources. They are known to cause serious human infections, including a fatal encephalitis, a blinding keratitis, and pneumonia. The main aim of the study was detection and molecular identification of Acanthamoeba spp., Naegleria fowleri, Balamuthia mandrillaris, Sappinia pedata, and Vermoamoeba vermiformis (formerly Hartmannella vermiformis) in artificial water bodies in North-Western Poland. We examined 86 water samples collected during 2-year period from 43 water bodies, including outdoor and indoor swimming pools, firefighting reservoirs, fountains, as well as water network. The samples were filtrated using Filta-Max® membrane filters (IDEXX Laboratories, USA) and, in order to select potentially pathogenic, thermophilic strains and to limit the number of PCR examined samples, the thermal tolerance test was carried out. Obtained filtrates were transferred to non-nutrient agar plates with E. coli. The agar plates were incubated at 37°C and then proliferated amoebae were passaged at 42°C. DNA was extracted from the thermophilic trophozoites and then polymerase chain reactions and sequence analysis were performed for molecular identification of FLA. From the 86 collected water samples 57 strains of FLA were able to proliferate at 37°C and 7 of them showed ability to proliferate at 42°C. For molecular identification of Acanthamoeba spp. and V. vermiformis, regions of 18S rDNA were amplified. In order to detect B. mandrillaris DNA, we used mitochondrial 16S rDNA as a marker, and for detection of N. fowleri and S. pedata – ITS regions. Based on molecular analysis, isolates were classified to the genus Acanthamoeba (T4 and T11 genotypes, as well as the new genotypes detected earlier in clinical samples and named T16) and V. vermiformis species. Detected strains were highly similar or identical to pathogenic strains detected earlier in patients. Our results show a wide distribution of potential pathogenic FLA, as Acanthamoeba T4, T11, T16 genotypes, and V. vermiformis species in various artificial water bodies located in North-Western Poland and suggest a potential threat to health of humans in this part of the country.

    Despite some knowledge on the risks from exposure to intestinal parasitic protozoa such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Toxoplasma, no occurrence studies of these protozoa were conducted in Cracow area. Therefore, the purpose of the work was to examine the presence of Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Toxoplasma in surface water samples including intakes and recreational waters. The study showed that the vast majority of water samples were positive for Cryptosporidium sp., and some of the samples were positive for Giardia intestinalis. None of the tested water samples showed the presence of Toxoplasma. Given the limitations of the research methods used and the limits of detection, these results indicated that the concentration of protozoan cysts/oocysts may range from <1 to dozens oocysts/cysts per liter of water. These concentrations are comparable to the values given in reports of major worldwide outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis or giardiasis, which indicating a need to further investigate Cracow's surface waters.

    W artykule przedstawiono metody oznaczania wybranych filtrów UV w próbkach wody i ścieków. Opisano procedurę wzbogacania i izolacji dwóch filtrów UV z próbek wody i ścieków. Do analizy wykorzystano chromatograf gazowy sprzężony z detektorami płomieniowo-jonizacyjnym i spektrometrii mas (GC-FID-MS) oraz chromatograf cieczowy wyposażony w detektor z matrycą diod (HPLC-UV-DAD). Dla obu metod wykonano walidację. Etyloheksylo- metoksycynamonian (EHMC) i 1-(4'-t-butylofenylo)-3-(4''-metoksyfenylo-)propano-1,3-dion (MBBM) oznaczono w próbkach wody i ścieków kąpielowych. Oznaczono granicę wykrywalności i oznaczalności oraz wartość odzysku badanych związków. Uzyskano zadowalającą precyzję (RSD 5 -15 %). Przeprowadzono wstępne badania trwałości EHMC pod wpływem działania promieniowania UV. Wykazano, że produktem degradacji EHMC jest pochodna kwasu cynamonowego.
    Methods for the determination of selected UV filters in water and wastewater samples have been presented. Procedure for enrichment and isolation of two UV filters from water and wastewater samples was described. Gas chromatograph coupled with flame ionization detector and mass spectrometry (GC-FID-MS) as well as liquid chromatograph equipped with UV and Diode Array (HPLC-UVDAD) detectors were used for the analysis. For both the methods, validation was performed. 2-Ethylhexyl 3- (4-methoxyphenyl)-2- propenoate (EHMC) and 1-(4'-t-butylphenyl)-3-(4''-methoxyphenyl-) propane-1,3-dione (MBBM) were determined in samples of water and bathing wastewater. Limit of detection, limit of quantification and recovery of the tested compounds were determined. The precision was satisfactory (RSD 5-15 %). Preliminary studies on stability of EHMC under influence of UV radiation were carried out. It was found that cinnamic acid derivative was the product of EHMC degradation.

    The simultaneous determination of Ga(III) and In(III) in environmental water samples was described. The procedure was based on adsorptive stripping voltammetry using an in situ plated bismuth film electrode as a working electrode. In order to obtain low detection limits and satisfactory separations of gallium and indium peaks on the voltammogram, cupferron was used as a complexing agent. The optimum composition of the supporting electrolyte was found to be: 0.1 mol l-1 acetate buffer (pH=5.0), 2 × 10-4 mol l-1 cupferron, 2 × 10-4 mol l-1 Bi(III), optimal voltammetric parameters were found to be: accumulation potential -0.9 V, accumulation time 60 s. The linear range of Ga(III) as well as In(III) was observed over a concentration range from 2.5 × 10-8 mol l-1 to 1.5 × 10-6 mol l-1. The method was satisfactorily applied to the simultaneous quantification of gallium and indium in environmental water samples. This facilitated a promising application of the recommended procedure for monitoring the environment, which is necessary to evaluate the soil-plant system.

    In this paper the total uncertainty and its components (geochemical, sampling and analytical) were assessed with use of the empirical approach. For uncertainty estimation there were used results from analyses of normal and control (duplicate) samples, which were collected within monitoring of Upper Odra River Basin surface water and coalmine water inducted to it. Moreover, the influence of analyses method on the measurement uncertainty was examined. Results of ICP-MS, IC and titration methods were compared. The assessment of total uncertainty and its components was shown on the example of halogens (Cl −, Br − and I −) results delivered from normal and duplicate samples analyses.

    Zgodnie z obowiązującymi przepisami Unii Europejskiej (RDW2000; DWP 2006; DT 2009) monitoring jakości wód powierzchniowych i podziemnych powinien obejmować m.in. identyfikację wszystkich źródeł niepewności procedury analitycznej. Ponadto dyrektywa (DT 2009) oraz rozporządzenie (RMOE 2011) wskazują na konieczność prowadzenia programu zapewnienia i kontroli jakości (QA/QC) badań w monitoringu wód, a także podają wartość graniczną niepewności pomiaru szacowanej na poziomie odpowiednich norm jakości środowiska równej 50% lub mniejszej (k = 2).W rozporządzeniu (RMOE 2011) określono również metody referencyjne stosowane w monitoringu wód. W niniejszej pracy zastosowano empiryczne podejście (Nordest 2006,2007;Witczak i in. 2006; EURACHEM 2007; Kmiecik 2008; Kmiecik, Drzymała 2008; Kmiecik 2011) do oszacowania wartości niepewności całkowitej oraz jej składowych: niepewności geochemicznej, niepewności opróbowania i niepewności analitycznej. Dodatkowo zbadano wpływ metodyki poboru próbek na niepewność pomiaru. Do oceny niepewności wykorzystano wyniki analiz próbek normalnych i kontrolnych (dublowanych), pobranych w ramach monitoringu wód powierzchniowych Zlewni Górnej Odry oraz wód kopalnianych do niej odprowadzanych. Szacowanie niepewności całkowitej i jej komponentów pokazano na przykładzie wyników oznaczeń I– w próbkach normalnych i dublowanych. Określono wpływ rodzaju pojemnika na niepewność pomiaru. W tym celu zastosowano dwie procedury poboru próbek, obejmujące zastosowanie dwóch różnych pojemników na próbki. Analizę zawartości I– wykonano metodę ICP-MS w akredytowanym Laboratorium Hydrogeochemicznym. Każda z próbek poddana była dwukrotnej analizie. Do oszacowania wartości niepewności całkowitej i jej składowych zastosowano program ROBAN.
    According to European Union present legal state (RDW2000; DWP 2006; DT 2009) surface and ground water quality monitoring should also include identification of all uncertainty associated with analytical procedure sources. Moreover, directives (DT 2009; RMOE 2011) indicate necessity of implementation the quality assurance and quality control program(QA/QC) of research in water monitoring. They also give the measurement uncertainty threshold value assesst basing on adequate norms of environment quality and is equal to 50% or less (k=2). In directive (RMŚ 2011) there are also defined reference methods, which should be use in water monitoring. In this paper the empirical approach for total uncertainty and its components (geochemical, sampling and analytical) assessment was used (Nordest 2006, 2007; Witczak et al. 2006; EURACHEM 2007; Kmiecik 2008; Kmiecik, Drzymała 2008; Kmiecik 2011). Moreover, the influence of sampling method on the measurement uncertainty was examined. For uncertainty estimation there were used results from analyses of normal and control (duplicate) samples, which were collected within monitoring of Upper Odra River Basin surface water and coalmine water inducted to it. The assessment of total uncertainty and its components was shown on the example of I- results delivered from normal and duplicate samples analyses. The influence of container type on measurement uncertainty was determined. For this aim two procedures of samples collecting were used, concerning two types of samples containers. The iodide analyses was performed using ICP-MS method in accredited Hydrogeochemical Laboratory Each sample was analysed twice. For total uncertainty and its components assessment the ROBAN program was applied.
