Opis:
The article describes the research on the retention capacity of two mountain catchments in the Polish Carpathian Mts. These are the catchments of the Czarna Woda and Biała Woda streams. These catchments are adjacent, have a similar area (about 11 km2 each), but are geographically diverse. Their geomorphology, hydrographic network, soil water permeability and land use were analyzed. The Czarna Woda catchment is a forest catchment, and the Biała Woda catchment is a forest and agricultural catchment with pasture areas. The geographical analysis of the catchment showed that the Czarna Woda catchment most likely has greater retention capacity. Theoretical analyzes were verified on the basis of long-term measurements of flows in both streams. Outflows were calculated for the entire study period (2006-2022), as well as annual, monthly and daily outflows. The measurements were carried out using the overflow method in permanent measurement cross-sections. The total outflow from both catchments was simi-lar, so they had similar water resources. In particular years, months and days, outflow often differed significantly between catchments. It was found that during the periods of increased water runoff (from precipitation, from snowmelt) the outflow from the Biała Woda catchment was higher, while in the periods without precipitation the outflow from the Czarna Woda catchment prevailed. Short-term flood outflows were at least several dozen percent higher in the Biała Woda catchment. The measurement data confirmed that water was better retained in the Czarna Woda catchment and the outflow was slower. Water retention processes in the Czarna Woda catchment allowed to maintain minimum outflows at a level several times higher than in the Biała Woda catchment. The studies have shown that in a very small mountain area there can be a large variation in outflow in individual streams. Retention capacity of the catchment depends on environmental conditions and human activity.

W celu zagospodarowania wód opadowych (roztopowych) na terenach mieszkaniowych i przemysłowych, gdzie istnieją ograniczenia przestrzenne oraz tam, gdzie wykonanie dodatkowych przyłączy do sieci kanalizacji deszczowej jest utrudnione lub wręcz niemożliwe, można stworzyć system komór i paneli drenażowych, występuje zwiększenie małej retencji wodnej w następstwie ograniczenia spływu powierzchniowego wód opadowych (roztopowych), a tym samym złagodzenie (spłaszczenie) fali powodziowej (wezbraniowej).
To utilize rainwater (meltwater) in residential and industrial areas where there are some space limitations, and where it is hard or impossible to make additional sewage terminals, there can be created a system of drainage chambers and panels. This contributes to increasing the small-scale retention resulting from limiting the run-off of rainwater and meltwater, as a result of which flood wave gets flattened.

Opis:
The paper presents results of studies on storm-generated surface runoff, a phenomenon belonging to the least known factors responsible for migration of pollutants to water environment. The results of determinations of pH, conductivity as well as content of Ca, Zn, Cd, and Pb are found to be useful as the main indicators of pollution spread by waters running from dam slopes of pond in which tailings from flotation of Zn-Pb ore are disposed. Rain water leaches fine fractions of carbonate-sulfate wastes (represented mainly by dolomite, 73%, and Fe sulfides – marcasite, up to 20%) which leads to change in character of surface runoff water to that of SO4-Ca hydro-chemical type. Among the leached metals significantly important for the environment are Zn, Cd and Pb whose concentrations exceed threshold values for surface and/or groundwater of IV quality class. Acceptable concentrations in waste waters are frequently exceeded by sulfates and incidentally by zinc. Variability of the analyzed concentration indices from the years 2008 and 2009 indicates influence of weather conditions on chemical composition of surface runoff water from slopes of tailings pond of flotation plant of MVT ores.

Opis:
One of the main problems of urbanization is the continuous growth of sealed surfaces. Impermeable surfaces i.e. roofs, roads or pavements have dominated land cover, increasing surface runoff and limiting groundwater runoff, often contributing to increased flood risk. The practice of many countries has shown that green roofs are one of the solutions to the problem of rainwaters on the urban areas. The aim of the study was to assess the retention ability of three green roofs of extensive type with different substrate composition (two mineral-organic mixtures, one mineral mixture). The research was carried out at the Water Centre of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences in Warsaw (Ursynów district) in the period from June to November in 2016. The obtained results were compared with observation of the reference model – bituminous roof. Model studies have shown that green roofs retained water in the range from 9.5 mm to 67.1 mm. The average runoff coefficients for green roof types in the period from June to November in 2016 were from 0.31 to 0.33. The obtained results showed slight differences in outflows with different substrates. During high rainfall, the differences in the runoff between the green roofs and the reference roof were negligible.

Opis:
The exceptionally high spatial-temporal variability of the river runoff and the significance of its transboundary component considerably worsen the problem of the water supply of the republic. Due to the disadvantageous geographical location in the lower reaches of transboundary river basins, the Republic of Kazakhstan is largely dependent on water economy activities taking place in neighbouring countries. In the article the modern change of the resources of river runoff in Kazakhstan, taking into account climatic and anthropogenic influences is considered. For the assessment of the impact of economic activities on the river runoff and changes in climatic-related runoff, the complex of integral methods was used, and appropriate methodologies were developed. The obtained results of the modern influence of a complex of factors, as well as their significance for the future (till 2030), can be used for the development of scientifically based solutions for sustainable management and protection of water resources. An assessment of the anthropogenic activity of this study shows that the water resources of the river runoff of the Republic of Kazakhstan have decreased by 16.0 km3∙y-1. According to our forecasts, there will be a further decrease in the water resources of the republic due to the expected decrease in transboundary flow to 87.1 km3∙y-1 by 2030, in dry years less than 50.0 km3∙y-1. We propose a set of measures to prevent the negative impact of possible reduction of river runoff resources in the future in the water basins of Kazakhstan.

Opis:
Constructed wetlands (CWs) are becoming a popular solution for the treatment of rainwater discharged from hardened surfaces, because their construction and maintenance does not require large expenditures. The research on the effectiveness of treating runoff from the dairy farm yard was carried out using constructed wetland. The studied wetland was built in the form of two connected reservoirs with an area of 30 m2. In the first deep reservoir, sedimentation of suspended matter occurred, while in the second shallow reservoir, six species of aquatic plants were planted in order to assimilate nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. In the years 2014–2018, the water samples from the inflow and outflow of the constructed wetland were collected. The pH and electrical conductivity values, as well as nitrate nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, phosphates phosphorus and chlorides concentrations were determined with electrochemical and photometric methods. The obtained results were statistically analyzed using the Statistica v. 7 software. In the majority of the runoff samples from the farmyard, abnormal concentration of ammonium nitrogen (90% of samples) and phosphate phosphorus (100% of samples) occurred in relation to the requirements for surface waters. The values of ammonium nitrogen concentration exceeded the acceptable norms for domestic sewage discharged into waters in 31% of samples and in the case of phosphate phosphorus – in 67% of samples. The concentration of chlorides exceeded the limit values for surface water in 36% of samples. The average concentration of nitrate nitrogen did not exceed these standards. There was a high correlation between the concentration of ammonium nitrogen and the concentration of phosphate phosphorus and chlorides. The efficiency of runoff treatment from the dairy cattle farm yard was very high in the initial period of research, reaching 85.4% for ammonium nitrogen and 68.3% for phosphate phosphorus, but showed a downward trend over time for the entire period.

The article addresses the issue of management of rainwater, treating it as a factor strengthening the resilience of urban areas to climate change. Dense buildings, excessive seal land, floods and droughts urban, insufficient attention to green infrastructure, involve any such negative processes as deterioration of the microclimate, droughts and floods urban (lack or excess water), depletion of biological biodiversity and increased morbidity among people. To counter this global process, is opposed to the idea of sectoral (fragmented) activities, system integration of many scientific and engineering communities. Product examples of solutions based on ecohydrology was presented in the area of Island Pasieka in Opole, as a highly urbanized area, where the processes are disturbed outflow of rainwater, evapotranspiration and infiltration of groundwater, which in turn translates into a negative climate and quality of life. The article is a proposal of development of this area based on analysis of blue-green infrastructure, a return to natural hydro-ecosystems and to draw attention to the quality of ecosystem services in relation to the principles of sustainable development.

This paper simulates the responses of water budget components to doubled CO2 (2 × 378 ppm) concentration in the atmosphere with atmospheric and oceanic surface warming of 2°C. Simulations employed version 4.7 of the Regional Climate Model of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). Two six-year experiments were each repeated twice with the same model physics and parameterizations. The control experiment held the CO2 concentration at 378 ppm (no warming), while the other experiment specified doubled CO2 concentration and warming. The results showed a positive response (60-100% increase) to doubled CO2 for precipitation, runoff, and storage terms in Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, and the ocean area between 3 and 13°N. However, there was a negative response (up to 60%) for northern Senegal, southern Mali, and northern Nigeria. The reductions in water fluxes were observed mostly on the leeward side of the highlands. Evapotranspiration showed a negative response (1-20%) to doubled CO2 on the land north of 20°N. Burkina Faso and southern Mali responded oppositely to doubled CO2, despite their spatial proximity.

The main aim of this work was the application of the soil additives into soil and the study of their impact on the amount of surface runoff originating from rainwater. Execution of research was carried out on the modified portion of the land at Department of Biometeorology and Hydrology, SUA Slovakia. Land was divided into four experimental plots. Individual treatments consisted of application of perlite, charcoal and water glass into the top layer of the experimental plots. The fourth experimental field was kept as a black fallow (control). To perform the measurements, rainfall simulator was used in six measurement series. We can conclude that the application of perlite is not an adequate treatment for erosion control practices, since its application increased the surface runoff. Increased application dose of additives resulted in the positive effects of the water glass application. Surface runoff for this treatment decreased in average by about 41% in comparison to control. This positive effect was observed only after the second application of the soil additives.

Opis:
The paper considers mountain rivers, which usually feature high dynamics of hydrological phenomena. The variability of the Sola river flows in the Polish Carpathians is presented based on water-gauge measurements from the hydrological long-period of 1956-2015. The flows for the upper section of the river, where no storage reservoirs are found, were analysed. A broad range of flows was shown – from 0.59 to 1250 m3/s at a mean flow of 15.5 m3/s. It was also shown that within a year, the flows grow in the spring (thaw freshets) and summer periods (rainwater freshets). Mainly the summer freshets are dangerous, consisting in a sudden rise of the flow due to rains. This is shown by the high values of maximum flows in June and July. In the case of mountain rivers, such as the Sola river, it is necessary to undertake the actions stabilising the flows, which on the one hand have flood-prevention importance, and on the other hand protect the water resources in long dry periods. The actions should be concentrated on the proper arrangement of the catchment area, slowing down the rainwater outflow. Appropriate land use is especially important (distribution of forests, of arable and developed areas) depending on the land elevation above the sea level and inclination, as well as creation of small storage facilities.

Dokumentują one stan i poziom wykorzystania zasobów wody i środowiska w pierwszym roku trzeciego tysiąclecia.
Rural areas occupy the majority of the area in Poland . They are the areas of a varying degree of land development and investment, where water resources of the country are formed. The volume of water resources depends mainly on precipitation while their quality and distribution into cycle phases are the resultant of environmental features and of the condition and character of the economy. The use of the environment up to now has not, for the most part, resulted in intense anthropogenic impact. The aim of the study was to present water resources, their quality and management against a background of land use structure and to indicate the significance and tasks of rural areas for environmental protection. The study was prompted by the occurrence of a prolonged and deep low-water period during the summer of 2003. It was based on materials published by IMGW and statistical data by GUS. They document the condition and degree of utilisation of water resources and the environment during the first year of the third millennium.

Regulation of surface runoff in urban areas with temporary delay by infiltration basins of rainwater in the places of their precipitation and with gradual drainage through the existing reservoirs of small diameters is the most appropriate under the conditions of intensive building development, wear and imperfection of surface drainage systems, especially combined sewerage. Evaluation of application conditions and basic parameters of infiltration basins in surface drainage regulation was carried out on the basis of own experimental studies of infiltration basin fragment with upper typical vegetation layer, numerical computer modeling of surface runoff formation in urban areas, its regulation using infiltration basins and analysis of previous studies. Its water absorption, filtration and clearing indicators were defined on the basis of experimental studies. The self-regenerative restoring function of a vegetative layer, working conditions under the flooded and not flooded conditions were established and defined. According to the amount of suspended solids, BOD, oxidation, pH and dissolved oxygen, the quality of rain runoff when filtering water through the upper vegetation layers of infiltration basins decreases to the normative values.

The amount of eco-water resources reflects the land surface water conservation capability, and the underlying surface condition in the hydrologic cycle. In the upper Minjiang River Basin, the amounts of eco-water resources were retrieved from remotely sensed data during 1992 to 2005. Through regression analysis between the retrieved eco-water data and the climate hydrological data mainly including the temperature, the precipitation, and the runoff in the same period, the model of eco-water driving force affecting the evolvement of runoff was established. The accuracy analysis indicates that the model can well describe the relationship between dry season runoff and its driven factors, the measured data validation proves that the model has high precision and good practicability. The eco-water remote sensing inversion provides a valid method to quantify the land surface water conservation capability, and suggests an interesting approach for the driving function quantitative researches of underlying surface factor in the hydrologic cycle.
