Opis:
Nitrates and nitrites are natural components of the environment and contribute to the nitrogen cycle on Earth. Although nitrogen is essential for life, nitrogen compounds are among the main pollutants in the ecosystem. High concentrations of nitrogen compounds in the groundwater are primarily caused by human activity mostly in the use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture. Common health risks associated with higher concentrations of nitrates give rise to methemoglobin, which negatively affects mainly infants, and the potential formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines. This paper summarizes the results of laboratory tests of electrodialysis to remove nitrates from the model water. For the model solutions we used NaNO3 and NaNO3 with NaCl with a concentration of nitrates of approximately 1000 mg/l. The aim of the test was to achieve a concentration of nitrates corresponding to the limit for drinking water, which is 50 mg/l. The tests were carried out in the batch mode, and semi-continuous mode. All the tests have demonstrated the effectiveness of nitrate removal around 90%.
Testy zostały przeprowadzone w trybie przedziałowym i pół-ciągłym. Wszystkie testy wskazały efektywność usuwania azotanów na poziomie około 90%.

Opis:
In the discussion of water quality control, the first and most effective parameter that affects other variables and water quality parameters is the temperature situation and water temperature parameters that control many ecological and chemical processes in reservoirs. Additionally, one of the most important quality parameters studied in the quality of water resources of dams and reservoirs is the study of water quality in terms of salinity. The salinity of the reservoirs is primarily due to the rivers leading into them. The control of error in the reservoirs is always considered because the outlet water of the reservoirs, depending on the type of consumption, should always be standard in terms of salinity. Therefore, in this study, using the available statistics, the Ce-Qual-W2 two-dimensional model was used to simulate the heat and salinity layering of the Latyan Dam reservoir. The results showed that with warming and shifting from spring to late summer, the slope of temperature changes at depth increases and thermal layering intensifies, and a severe temperature difference occurs at depth. The results of sensitivity analysis also showed that by decreasing the wind shear coefficient (WSC), the reservoir water temperature increases, so that by increasing or decreasing the value of this coefficient by 0.4, the average water temperature by 0.56°C changes inversely, and the results also show that by increasing or decreasing the value of the shade coefficient by 0.85, the average water temperature changes by about 7.62°C, directly.

Opis:
This study presents an application of the SWAT model (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) in two meso- -scale catchments in Poland (Upper Narew and Barycz), contrasting in terms of human pressures on water quantity and quality. The main objective was multi-variable and multi-site calibration and validation of the model against daily discharge, sediment and nutrient loads as well as discussion of challenges encountered in calibration phase. Multi-site calibration and validation gave varied results ranging from very good (daily discharge) to acceptable (sediment, nitrogen and phosphorus loads in most of gauges) and rather poor (individual gauges for all variables) in both catchments. The calibrated models enabled spatial quantification of water yield, sediment and nutrient loads, indicating areas of special concern in terms of pollution, as well as estimation of contribution of pollution from different sources, indicating agriculture as the most important source in both catchments. During the calibration process a number of significant issues were encountered: (i) global vs. local parametrization, (ii) simulation of different pools of water quality parameters in reservoirs and streams and (iii) underestimation of NO3-N loads in winter due to farmers practices. Discussion of these issues is hoped to aid SWAT model users in Poland in a deeper understanding of mechanisms of multi-variable and multi-site calibration.
W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono zastosowanie modelu SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) w dwóch zlewniach w Polsce (Górnej Narwi i Baryczy), kontrastowych pod względem antropopresji w odniesieniu do ilości i jakości wód. Podczas kalibracji modelu napotkano następujące problemy: (1) identyfikacja parametrów globalnych w odniesieniu do lokalnych, (2) symulacja różnych form parametrów jakościowych w zbiornikach wodnych i ciekach oraz (3) niedoszacowanie ładunków azotanów w okresie zimowym spowodowane praktykami rolniczymi. Dyskusja nad poruszonymi aspektami umożliwi innym użytkownikom modelu SWAT lepsze zrozumienie mechanizmu wielopunktowej i wieloparametrycznej kalibracji.

Opis:
This paper presents a mathematical model of water flow in soil. It is based on Richards equation taking into consideration a negative source member which determines water uptake by crops. In the performed calculations, different and varied weather conditions were assumed, which were then applied to differently adopted boundary conditions. In case of precipitation, Dirichlet condition of full saturation of soil with water was assumed for the surface, and Neuman condition was assumed at the lower boundary of calculation area. In drought period, Neuman type condition, in a form of a function, determines water loss through soil surface, and Dirichlet condition determines the pressure of capillary rise. In the model, hydraulic conductivity of soil and suction pressure were made depending on its local moisture level. Soil profiles from an exemplary farm were analysed. Equations of the mathematical model were solved with the finite difference method. Non-stationary problem was solved with an explicit method. Numerical calculations were made with an software program written in FORTRAN compilation language. Results of moisture level variations in soil are presented for various simulated weather conditions. The target model and program developed will be expanded for the needs of the analysis of migration of nitrogen compounds in soil.
W pracy przedstawiono model matematyczny ruchu wody w glebie. W okresie suszy warunek typu Neumanna w postaci funkcji określa ubytek wody przez powierzchnię gleby, a warunek typu Dirichleta określa ciśnienie podsiąku kapilarnego. W modelu przewodność hydrauliczną gleby i ciśnienie ssące uzależniono od miejscowej jej wilgotności. Do analizy wzięto profile glebowe z przykładowego gospodarstwa rolnego. Równania modelu matematycznego rozwiązano metodą różnic skończonych. Niestacjonarne zagadnienie rozwiązano metodą jawną. Obliczenia numeryczne przeprowadzono w oparciu o autorski program napisany w języku kompilacyjnym FORTRAN. Przedstawiono wyniki obliczeń zmian wilgotności w glebie dla różnych, symulowanych warunków pogodowych. Docelowo opracowany model i program zostanie rozbudowany dla potrzeb analizy migracji związków azotu w glebie.

Molecular dynamics simulations of 1,2-di-O-acyl-3-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-sn-glycerol (MGDG) and 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DOPC) bilayers were carried out to compare the effect of the lipid head group's chemical structure on the dynamics and orientational order of the water molecules hydrating the bilayer. The effect of the bilayers on the diffusion of water is strong for the neighbouring water molecules i.e., those located not further than 4 Å from any bilayer atom. This is because the neighbouring water molecules are predominantly hydrogen bonded to the lipid oxygen atoms and their mobility is limited to a confined spatial volume. The choline group of DOPC and the galactose group of MGDG affect water diffusion less than the polar groups located deeper in the bilayer interface, and similarly. The latter is an unexpected result since interactions of water with these groups have a vastly different origin. The least affected by the bilayer lipids is the lateral diffusion of unbound water in the bilayer plane (x,y-plane) - it is because the diffusion is not confined by the periodic boundary conditions, whereas that perpendicular to the plane is. Interactions of water molecules with lipid groups also enforce certain orientations of water dipole moments. The profile of an average water orientation along the bilayer normal for the MGDG bilayer differs from that for the DOPC bilayer. In the DOPC bilayer, the ordering effect of the lipid head groups extends further into the water phase than in the MGDG bilayer, whereas inside the bilayer/water interface, ordering of the water dipoles in the MGDG bilayer is higher. It is possible that differences in the profiles of an average water orientation across the bilayer in the DOPC and MGDG bilayers are responsible for differences in the lateral pressure profiles of these bilayers.

The numerical analysis of the water flow along the 'Wild River' type water slide is presented. As the mathematical model of the free surface flow shallow water equations are assumed. In order to solve the equations, when transient, rapidly varied flow is present, the numerical scheme based on finite volume method is applied. The numerical simulation of water slide flow is computed on unstructured, triangular mesh. The results of calculation are examined against flow parameters observed on the real object installed in water park in Sopot. Generally good agreement between measured and calculated results was observed. Moreover, the calculations are compared to experimental data available due to physical modelling. As the similarity between physical phenomena of flow within water slide and in the river valley after dam-break event is observed, the investigation was realized within the framework of the State Committee for Scientific Research 6P06S04121 project.

Sarmatian sands and bur ied Pleis to cene val leys of the Kedzierzyn-Głubczyce Subtrough represent one of the main aquifers in southern Poland ( MGWB-332 - Major Ground Water Basin). This aquifer is intensively exploited, supplying tap water for the human population and for industry in the whole area; but, being confined, it has no influence on the ground water ecosystems. Two Ground Water Bodies (GWB-128 and GWB-129), introduced by administrative decisions according to EUDirectives, approximately cover the area of MGWB-332. The present study is related to the eastern part, the Sarmatian and buriedval eys sands of MGWB-332, i.e. to the most im - portant part of the multiaquifer GWB-129 which in profile consists of Holocene and Pleistocene sands, confined Sarmatian and Pleistocene buried valley sands, and Badenian sands. The presence and influence of deeper permeable formations is not addressed. The Sarmatian and Badenian aquifers are recharged and drained mainly by vertical seepages. Hydrodynamic modelling of the whole Kędzierzyn-Głubczyce Subthrough and tracer data indicate modern ages at the out crops of the Sarmatian under the Pleistocene deposits and mid to early Holocene ages close to the Odra River valley. Waters are of the HCO3-Ca type, changing at the centre of the Sarmatian to the SO4-Ca type due to the contribution of ascending sulphate water from the Badenian strata, whereas water in the buried Quaternary valley is of the HCO3-Na type, which means no significant contribution of ascending waters. Polluted modern waters occur only at the north west ern boundary in the area of the hydrogeological window. The quality of waters and their hydrochemistry result from water-rock in teractions and seepage exchanges with overlying and underlying aquifers belonging to the same GWB. Natural distributions of most major, minor and trace constituents are very wide, exemplifying difficulties in defining the quality of water in aunique way for the whole aquifer and particularly for the investigated multi-aquifer GWB.

The protection of water bodies requires the reduction of pollutant emissions from all major sources. In urbanized areas, these include: wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and (depending on the type of sewage system) combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and stormwater drainage outlets. WWTPs are usually monitored and emitted pollutant loads are known, but it is more difficult to assess the pollutant load discharged by CSOs and stormwater drainage systems. The article attempts to use the Stormwater Management Model (SWMM) to assess emissions of suspended solids from a large urban combined catchment. Suspended solids are the main pollutant of stormwater runoff in urban areas, and the dynamics of their emission from catchments is very diverse. The amount of suspended solids discharged by CSOs functioning in the given city was assessed in comparison with emissions from a wastewater treatment plant. The results show that CSOs discharge a pollutant load to the receiver which is comparable to WWTPs, but in a much shorter time and in a violent manner which can lead to the severe deterioration of receiving water quality. The modelling took into account the quality of dry weather sewage, the build-up of suspended solids, wash-off processes in the catchment area, and local precipitation characteristics. Factors affecting the quality of the obtained model and the accuracy of the emission level assessment were analysed.
