Opis:
Human activities in relation to aquatic ecosystems result in significant economic losses in the form of contamination of water sources, deteriorating its quality and therefore its availability in lakes, water bodies and even in soil. Hence the need for systematic revitalisation or reclamation of water ecosystems. Such actions, in order to be rational, require a detailed understanding of the causes, and then the use of appropriate technology. The need for the above-mentioned actions result from the weather changes that have been noticeable in recent years, as well as environmental pollutants increasing water eutrophication in reservoirs and stimulating the development of some species of cyanobacteria. These cyanobacteria can cause serious water poisoning, especially in water supply systems. Therefore, a rational, comprehensive technology for the removal of bottom sediments and their processing into organic and mineral fertiliser has been developed with properties similar to manure. It also creates opportunities to improve the structure of soils thanks to the supply of organic carbon, the loss of which was found, among others, in also in soils of Poland and EU. These new possibilities of revitalisation hitherto unknown make it possible to a large extent, compliance with environmental requirements when revitalising water reservoirs and soil.

Opis:
Phosphorus in wastewater is one of the main causes of water eutrophication. Phosphorus removal from swine wastewater is always a challenge. To achieve on-site recycling of swine farm waste, the low-cost pyro/hydrochars and their Fe-Mn-modified form were prepared from swine manure as an efficient adsorbent for phosphate removal. The results showed that the phosphate removal efficiency of unmodified pyro/hydrochars was less than 7.77%, which was significantly increased to 58.21–83.76% for the Fe-Mn-modified-pyro/hydrochars. The maximum adsorption capacity of pyrochar was found on the Fe-Mn-modified-pyrochar (PC-600M) with a surface area of 102.03 m2/g and a micropore volume of 0.25 cm3/g. The PC-600M exhibited high adsorption capacity (26.07 mg/g) in a low concentration of phosphate (50 mg/dm3), and its removal efficiency reached up to 83.76% within 24 hours. Furthermore, the adsorption of phosphate on biochars without modification (HC-210 and PC-600) was validated using a first-order kinetic model, and the adsorption of phosphate on modified biochars (HC-210M and PC-600M) was well described by the second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. In addition, there is no significant difference in the adsorption of phosphorus between pyrochars and hydrochars, but the preparation cost of hydrochars is lower than that of pyrochars. It was confirmed that the low-cost Fe-Mn-modified pyro/hydrochar from swine manure had potential for efficient phosphate removal in wastewater treatment and would facilitate value-added utilization of swine manure.

Opis:
The aim of this paper was to evaluate the influence of anthropogenic pollution on the water quality of the Ciemięga River, which flows through the Jastków commune, located in the Lublin Province in the South-Eastern Poland. The analyses of the river water were conducted in the years 2019–2020. Each year, the samples for physicochemical analyses were collected seasonally (in February, May, August and November) from the seven selected Ciemięga River sampling points found in the following localities: Ożarów, Moszenki, Sieprawice, Jastków, Snopków and Jakubowice Konińskie. In addition, 3 series of microbiological analysis were conducted in 2020. Electrolytic conductivity, total phosphorus, nitrate-nitrogen and sulfates constituted the physicochemical indicators of poor water quality in the river. Their average values exceeded the standards for the 2nd class of water quality. High concentration of these indicators, especially of the total phosphorus, could have been related to the influx of domestic wastewater from agricultural holdings, wastewater flows from agricultural areas as well as soil erosion and leaching. The levels of E. coli bacteria and fecal coliform allocated the Ciemięga River waters to the 4th class of water quality and could result from domestic wastewater flow to the river. In order to improve the water quality of the Ciemięga River, it is necessary to reduce or eliminate point and non-point sources of pollution by means of streamlining of the agricultural areas fertilization, regulating the water and wastewater management, regulating of the waste management, as well as the appropriate spatial policy and landscaping of the water catchment areas.

Opis:
The Uszwica river catchment is located in the central part of Lesser Poland province, within Brzeski and Bocheński districts. The river is 61.2 km long, and its catchment area is 322.5 km2. It is characterized by forest-agricultural land use and high share of residential areas of both compact (the city of Brzesko) and dispersed nature. In the abiotic terms, the Uszwica in its upper course may be classified as a flysch stream (type 12). From the moment of joining the Niedźwiedź, stream until its discharge into the Vistula at km 151+700 it is a sand and clay lowland river (type 19). Hydrochemical research were conducted in the years 2011 and 2012 at two measurement-control points – one located near the mouth of the river (point 1) and one located about 7.5 km downstream from the city of Brzesko (point 2). Each month 18 water quality parameters were determined and they underwent comparative and statistical analyses. Basic descriptive statistics were calculated for both measurement-control points. Then, they were used to determine the ecological potential of the river and to evaluate water quality parameters with respect to its suitability as fish habitat and eutrophication risk. Significance of differences between the values of individual parameters recorded at different measurement-control points was estimated using non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test for α = 0.05. The same test was used to determine the significance of differences between individual parameters for the winter and summer season at each point. Analysis of the results revealed that water flowing via developed areas (point 2) was significantly less saturated with oxygen and contained higher amounts of suspended solids, organic matter and nutrients, as compared to the section of the river flowing mainly through extensively used agricultural areas. Therefore, the ecological potential of the river was considered good in its lower course and poor upstream from point 2. Disturbances in seasonal concentrations of some biogenic factors indicated high degree of water pollution in the middle course of the Uszwica. However, due to intense self-purification, water quality in the lower course was similar to that in natural conditions. On the entire investigated section of the Uszwica does not meet water quality requirements for salmonids and cyprinids, but the habitats are more favorable near the mouth of the river. Waterassessed at point 2 may be classified as eutrophic due to high concentration of total phosphorus.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of physical and chemical tests of surface water samples taken from the areas of the Ostrzeszów Commune, which is part of the Ostrzeszów County, located in the southern part of the Wielkopolska Province. The Ostrzeszów commune is included in the urban-rural areas. The physicochemical analysis of surface waters covered samples taken from seventeen measurement and control points from places as accessible as possible. The water quality was assessed in accordance with the applicable regulations of the Minister of the Environment. Surface waters were characterized by typical variability for agricultural areas, i.e. slightly alkaline, pH in the range of 7.5-8.45; specific conductivity in the range of 246-512 μS/cm; turbidity in the range of 1.7-10.5 NTU; total hardness in the range of 1.6-3.2 mmol∙dm-3 Ca2+, Mg2+; alkalinity in the range of 66-142 mg∙dm-3 CaCO3 ; chloride content in the range of 19-47 mg/dm3 Cl-; content of biogenic compounds, ie: nitrites in the range of 0.02-0.36 mg∙dm-3 N-NO2 - ; nitrates in the range of 0.05 - 4,9 mg∙dm-3 N-NO3 - ; ammonium ion in the range of 0.04-0.94 mg∙dm-3 N-NH4 + ; the content of orthophosphate in the range of 0.11-1,56 mg∙dm-3 P-PO4 3-. The content of metals, i.e. manganese Mn, Fe iron, was characterized by high variability depending on the location of the sampling site (Mn manganese in the range of 0.006-0.22 mg∙dm-3, Fe iron in the range of 0.02-0.28 mg∙dm-3, potassium K in the range of 10-13 mg∙dm-3). In all analyzed samples, the presence of copper Cu, nickel Ni and zinc Zn was not detected. The quality of surface waters of the Ostrzeszów commune, in addition to natural hydrological factors, is affected by areas covered by agricultural activity and the evident lack of developed sewerage system in the analyzed sampling regions. The research carried out at the turn of the year showed that the use of artificial and natural fertilizers in cultivated areas contributed to the increase in the content of biogenic and mineral substances in surface.

Opis:
W celu zbadania dynamiki zmian zawartości fosforanów w dorzeczu Zachodniego Bugu, przeprowadzono analizę koncentracji fosforanów wzdłuż koryta rzeki, zidentyfikowano zmienność sezonową zawartości fosforanów w reprezentatywnych punktach obserwacyjnych, główne źródła napływu fosforanów i zidentyfikowano najbardziej zanieczyszczone sekcje rzeki Bug. Na koniec zwrócono uwagę na konieczność przywrócenia i ochrony właściwego stanu ekologicznego rzek transgranicznych.
The article stipulates that one of the primary issues regarding surface waters of Western Bug river, specifically eutrophication, is caused by influx of excessive amount of biogens (which include phosphates). In order to study the dynamics of change of phosphate regime in Western Bug river basin, analysis of phosphate concentrations change alongside river bed has been performed, season-related features of phosphate contents in representative observation points have been determined, main phosphates influx sources and most polluted sections of the river have been identified. Finally, the attention has been focused on the necessity to restore and guard the "good" ecological state of transboundary rivers.

The marine diatom Chaetoceros muelleri is commonly used for aquacultural feed and is well known for its fast growth and easy maintenance. In order to evaluate the potential of C. muelleri to be used for the nutrient removal and biomass production from eutrophic saline wastewaters, the algae were cultured under a wide range of temperature, salinity, photoperiod, and light intensity. The optimum temperature for the biomass production was observed at 30°C, but the algae could maintain at least 66% of the highest production between 20°C and 35°C. The optimum salinity for the biomass production was 25, but the algae could maintain at least 22% of the highest production between 10 and 30. Both light intensity and photoperiod affected the algal biomass production, and the minimum light requirement was considered 100 μmol m−2•s−1 for 6 hours to maintain the biomass production and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) absorption. Throughout all the experiments, the N and P absorption increased with the biomass production, but the ratio of N and P to the biomass exponentially decreased with the biomass production. These results showed that C. muelleri is tolerant to the wide range of environmental conditions, absorbing nutrients and producing organic matter. C. muelleri has a great potential to be introduced in the water treatment processes, especially where the temperature and salinity fluctuate.

Opis:
The study presents the characteristics of the Mściwojów Reservoir equipped with a unique pre-reservoir structure that supports the process of self-purification of waters. The authors present more than ten years of studies, focusing mainly on the issues of water quality and the concentration of phosphorus, which is considered as the main factor influencing water eutrophication process. Quite a high concentration of phosphates was noted in the outflow from the main reservoir, in spite of a lower concentration of these compounds in the water leaving the pre-reservoir. Basing on the conducted analyses, the catchment of the reservoir was qualified as group 4, being very prone to the movement and supply of material to the reservoir. The negative value of the retention coefficient of phosphorus obtained for the main part of the reservoir points to the existence of an internal source of phosphorus supply to the reservoir. During over 10 years of studies, new directions of the development of the rural areas were determined. Future works should be extended so as to cover all elements of the ecosystem of the reservoir. In a longer term it seems natural to extend the research works to cover the whole catchment of Wierzbiak River.

Przedstawiono przyczyny i skutki zmian zachodzących w strukturze i rozwoju fitoplanktonu w Jeziorze Kortowskim w warunkach dominacji oraz zwiększenia stałości występowania sinic. W tym celu przeprowadzono analizę jakościową i ilościową fitoplanktonu Jeziora Kortowskiego, w oparciu o którą wyznaczono strukturę dominacji i stałości występowania glonów planktonowych. Wzrastająca dominacja i stałość występowania sinic w jeziorze przyczyniały się do przebudowy struktury taksonomicznej i decydowały o tempie rozwoju całego fitoplanktonu. Stwierdzono, że zwiększenie stałości występowania i dominacji sinic spowodowało szereg kompleksowych przemian kształtujących zbiorowisko glonów planktonowych i był mechanizmem aktywującym zachodzenie tych zmian. Tendencje zmian potwierdzono w siedmio-letniej (1987–1990, 1999, 2009, 2010) obserwacji fitoplanktonu w warunkach wzrostu stałości i dominacji sinic.
Causes and effects of changes in structure and growth of phytoplankton in Lake Kortowskie (Olsztyn, Poland) were presented, under the conditions of blue-green algae dominance and increase in their stability of occurrence. Specific adaptation abilities of the blue-green algae which could have an impact on this phenomenon, but also could be a limiting factor in occurrence and growth of other algal groups, were analyzed. Qualitative and quantitative phytoplankton analysis for Lake Kortowskie was performed and applied as a basis for the planktonic algae dominance structure and stability of occurrence determination. As a result, a significant increase in the blue-green algae stability and dominance was demonstrated. It was established that under these conditions stability level and growth of other planktonic algae groups gradually decreased. The increasing dominance and stability of the blue-green algae in the lake contributed to shifts in the taxonomic structure and affected growth rate of the entire phytoplankton assemblage. It was established that the increase in the blue-green algae dominance and stability triggered a series of complex transformations shaping the planktonic algae community. Trends in dynamics were documented during the seven-year phytoplankton studies (1987–1990, 1999, 2009, 2010) under the said conditions of increase in the stability and dominance of the blue-green algae.

Opis:
The study was carried on Lake Giłwa (100.8 ha, 9.4 m), in the drainage basin of the Giłwa and Pasłęka rivers. The data obtained in the study allowed the authors to classify Lake Giłwa as a water body belonging to the third stability degree according to Patalas (1960). As evidenced in the study, Lake Giłwa is a highly eutrophic reservoir. The lake waters were characterized by a high content of nutrients, up to 1.40 mg P·dm-3 and 12.47 mg N·dm-3. The high fertility of the lake was also exhibited by the values of BOD5 reaching 7 mg O2·dm-3, chlorophyll a content (73 mg·m-3) and low transparency — 0.7 m. In the peak of the summer, the stagnation oxygen profile is represented by a clinograde curve typical for eutrophic lakes, while carbon dioxide distribution in the water column is shown by a „reverse” clinograde curve, also typical for fertile reservoirs. The study has revealed that the water in Lake Giłwa is well buffered, as shown by the alkalinity values, 2.5-5.0 mval dm-3. Total hardness of the reservoir water varied from 157.1 to 278.8 mg CaCO3·dm-3, which is typical of hard water. The hardness was conditioned mainly by the calcium content. With the River Giłwa, the lake receives wastewater from the wastewater treatment plant in Gietrzwałd, which is manifested, for example, by the high values of electrolytic conductivity (321-476 µS·cm-1), indicating the degree of mineral pollution of the lake. Despite the wastewater input, the amount of chlorides is rather low, 20 mg Cl·dm-3 at the most.
Pomimo dopływu ścieków, w wodach analizowanego zbiornika stwierdzono niewielką ilość chlorków - do 20 mg Cl·dm-3.

Nitrogen related water pollution in aquatic systems is one of the most common problems encountered worldwide nowadays. Different restoration practices have been tested to eliminate the impacts from eutrophication but no widely applicable methodology has been found until now. Extract of Yucca shidigera has been proved effective in reducing ammonia in livestock industry and aquaculture but have not been yet tested in freshwater ecosystems. In this study, the effects of yucca extract on the reduction of ammonia in Lake Koumoundourou have been investigated. Yucca extract was added at various concentrations to experimental tanks containing lake water and sediment. The results show that yucca extract significantly reduced the concentration of ammonia while other water quality parameters were relatively stable during the experiment, except from dissolved oxygen. The study indicates that yucca extract as a restoration method can be promising but larger scale experiments should be conducted to validate this outcome.

Opis:
Eutrophication-related problems in the Western Harbour ofA lexandria were studied monthly from April 1999 to March 2000. Variation in salinity appeared to be the key to all changes in water quality and plankton abundance in the harbour. Both at the surface and near the bottom the salinity was lower (annual average: 35.1 and 38.3 PSU respectively) than in the open sea (39 PSU). Dissolved oxygen levels indicated poor aeration conditions along the water column (2.3–3.98 mg l−1). Average pH values were approximately similar in the two layers (8.1 and 8 respectively) but exhibited different ranges ofv ariations. Nutrient salts varied widely, often occurring in high concentrations, with ranges of 0.12–5.7 and 0.06–2.6 μM at the surface and the bottom respectively for phosphate, 0.21–20.46 and 0.25–18.12 μM for nitrate, 0.29–3.3 and 0.23–1.66 μM f or nitrite, 0.56–57.46 and 2.32–43.73 μM for ammonia and 0.3–36.3 and 0.48–38.4 μM for silicate. As a result ofn utrient enrichment, phytoplankton growth was very intensive, reflected by an abnormally high concentration ofc hlorophyll a (annual average: 33.82 μg l−1). At the same time the death ofl arge numbers ofp hytoplankton cells could be inferred from the relatively large amount of phaeopigment (annual average: 10.39 μg l−1). The high levels ofn utrient salts and phytoplankton biomass together serve as a good indicator ofhig h eutrophication levels in the Western Harbour throughout the year. These conditions clearly affected the zooplankton stock, which varied between 5.8–93.6×103 indiv. m−3, although for most of the time values remained at a low level (annual average: 26 728 indiv. m−3).

Opis:
The paper presents a comparative and statistical analysis of the changes of water quality indices values with depth on the water intake from Dobczyce reservoir. Moreover, seasonal variability of the tested indices was analysed and water quality with its usable values were assessed. Dobczyce reservoir is a 12 km long and 1.0 km wide submountain dam reservoir. The reservoir area at the maximum impoundment level (maximum water level) is 915 ha, its capacity 112.1 mln m3 and mean depth 10.2 m. It is situated 20 south of Krakow, in the malopolskie voivodship, myślenicki county. Raw water from the reservoir is collected on tower intake which makes possible water intake from three depth levels. Real water extraction on the intake is about 1.0 m3 ∙s-1, guaranteed 2.5 m3 ∙ s-1 and permissible 5.5 m3 ∙ s-1. The investigations conducted in 2008 and 2009 covered selected physicochemical water indices: the temperature, pH, turbidity, electrolytic conductivity, total suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, oxygen saturation, silica, phosphates, total phosphorus, as well as bioindicator – chlorophyll „a”. At weekly intervals, water samples for laboratory analyses were collected from three depth levels of the reservoir directly at the tower water intake for Krakow. Physicochemical and biological analyses, using referential methods were conducted in the Laboratory of the Municipal Waterworks and Sewer Enterprise in Krakow. For each analysed index mean values for 2008 and 2009 and for the 2008–2009 period of analyses were computed, divided into the winter (October-March) and summer (April-September) half year and for the calendar year (January-December). Statistical significance of the differences between the values of individual indices registered on various depth levels on the reservoir were estimated by nonparametric U Manna-Whitney’a significance test, on α = 0.05. For all investigated indices box-whiskers plots were made which suggestively presented the median, extreme values and 10–90% percentiles. The assessment of Dobczyce reservoir water for drinking water supply for people was conducted following the methodology described in the Regulation of the Minister of the Environment [Dz. U. 2002 Nr 204, poz. 1728]. Selected quality parameters of the tested water were also confronted with the requirements stated in the Regulation of the Minister of Health dated 29 March 2007 on drinking water quality for people [Dz. U. 2007 nr 61, poz. 417]. Trophic state of Dobczyce reservoir was assessed on the basis of total phosphorus and chlorophyll „a” concentrations, using the criteria stated by OECD. On the basis of data analysis it was established that mean annual values of water temperature, pH, oxygen saturation and concentrations of dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll „a” were decreasing with depth. On the other hand, in the vertical profile, turbidity, electrolytic conductivity, as well concentrations of total suspended solids, phosphates and total phosphorus were increasing. Higher water temperatures and pH values were noted in the summer half-year, whereas dissolved oxygen, oxygen saturation and phosphates in the winter half-year. On average for the investigated period, water collected in Dobczyce reservoir on the depth of 3.55 and 9.65 m was classified, respectively to A2 and A3 water category, therefore it required appropriate typical or high performance typical treatment. On the other hand, due to low oxygen saturation in the summer half-year, water on the level of 15.87 m did not meet the standards. Irrespective of the depth, pH and salinity fulfilled the requirements for water intended for direct consumption by people, whereas water turbidity was unsatisfactory all the time. Mean annual concentrations of total phosphorus qualify water collected in the reservoir as mezotrophic, while average and maximum concentrations of chlorophyll „a” allow to regard the water as respectively mezotrophic or eutrophic. Due to relatively big differences in values of the analysed indices, better quality raw water intended for running water outside the growing period supply should be skillfully collected from various depths – generally in the from the shallowest level, in the vegetation season from the middle level and from the lowest level on case higher concentrations of chlorophyll „a” and plankton occur on the first two depths of the reservoir.

Opis:
The paper presents the evaluation of seasonal and long-term changes in selected nutrients of three lakes of the Poznań Lakeland. The lakes were selected due to the high risk of pollution from agricultural and residential areas. Water samples were taken in 6 control points in the spring, summer and autumn, from 2004 to 2014. Trophic status of the lakes was evaluated based on the concentration of nutrients (nitrates, nitrites, ammonium, nitrogen and phosphorus) and indicators of eutrophication. Studies have shown that the concentration of nutrients varied greatly both in individual years and seasons of the analyzed decades, especially in Lakes Niepruszewskie and Pamiątkowskie. The main problem is the high concentration of nitrates. In general, it showed an upward trend until 2013, especially in the spring. This may indicate that actions restricting runoff pollution from agricultural sources have not been fully effective. On the other hand, a marked downward trend in the concentrations of NH4 over the years from 2004 to 2014, especially after 2007, indicates a gradual improvement of wastewater management. Moreover, seasonal variation in NH4 concentrations differed from those of NO3 and NO2. The highest values were reported in the autumn season, the lowest in the summer. Concentrations of nutrients and eutrophication indexes reached high values in all analysed lakes, indicating a eutrophic or hypertrophic state of the lakes. The high value of the N:P ratio indicates that the lakes had a huge surplus of nitrogen, and phosphorus is a productivity limiting factor.
