Opis:
This paper deals with one of the aspects important from the point of view of water quality maintenance in storage reservoirs, namely the dynamics of water currents that accompany changes of the water surface elevation in such reservoirs. Numerical simulations were conducted to back observations that high discharges are in the long term beneficial to water quality in the reservoir. Calculations made using the AdH finite elements model confirmed that the water current pattern in shallow regions varies greatly with the total discharge value. The sample analysis shown in this article concerns a mid-size storage reservoir of Tresna located in southern Poland. It appears that for small discharges the currents that wet some areas of the previously dry reservoir bed are similar to reversed currents that occur when the area is dried. Thus some amounts of water may move from one stagnant area to another forth and back and then the water exchange is limited. It means that it is not enough to lower the water level within the reservoir steering rules and then raise it again to be assured that the water quality improves in the reservoir, especially in the lull parts. But for higher discharges the current pattern is different and the exchange of the reservoir water really does happen. In most cases in order to “flush” a reservoir that way one could just wait for high water to come, but if reservoirs form a cascade creating an artificial controlled freshet that propagates down the cascade may be a considerable means of altering water quality in lower reservoirs.

Opis:
While modeling water dynamics in dam reservoirs, it is usually assumed that the flow involves the whole water body. It is true for shallow reservoirs (up to several meters of depth) but may be false for deeper ones. The possible presence of a thermocline creates an inactive bottom layer that does not move, causing all the discharge to be carried by the upper strata. This study compares the results of hydrodydynamic simulations performed for the whole reservoir to the ones carried out for the upper strata only. The validity of a non-stratified flow approximation is then discussed.

Opis:
The aim of the research described in this paper is to classify groundwater level patterns in pine stands of forest fresh sites. The approach has been employed with the view to facilitate explaining interactions between physiographic characteristics and groundwater dynamics in prospective research. The methods which have been employed so far for explanation of groundwater level dynamics interactions with local physiographic conditions do not let to draw firm conclusions. The classification of groundwater dynamics patterns requires employing more sophisticated methods, because of a relatively extensive range of groundwater dynamics site-to-site variability expressed, e.g., by amplitude and cycle period. The methods of groundwater patterns classification proposed in the literature focused either on hydrogeological criteria or, if related to forest ecosystems, focused on water balance elements in forest habitats. The area selected for investigation represented typical features for the Northern European Lowland forests defined by soil and form of terrain pattern shaped by the last glacial period (Vistulian glaciation) and dominant share of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in stand species composition. The research period covered the 2002-2007 hydrological years. The measurement used in analysis covered 35 sites equipped with measurement wells.

This research analysed the availability of phytoplankton and the growth rate of Vannamei shrimp in relation to water quality changes. The research was carried out in February-March 2021 for a half cycle of shrimp cultivation in two ponds of the Brackish Water Fish Culture Probolinggo Laboratory in Probolinggo, East Java, Indonesia. The research used a descriptive method and included a survey. Sampling was made every two weeks for two months. Nine parameters were measured and ten shrimps were taken for a specific growth rate (SGR) measurement once per sampling. Data were analysed using the principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Secondary data of water quality were added for the PCA. The results show that the phytoplankton found in the first pond consisted of Chlorophyta, Chrysophyta, and Cyanophyta, whereas the phytoplankton in the other pond included Chlorophyta, Chrysophyta, Cyanophyta, and Dinophyta. The abundance of phytoplankton ranged from 12-80∙103 cell∙cm-3, which indicated eutrophic waters. The PCA demonstrated that pH, nitrate, and total organic matter (TOM) significantly influenced phytoplankton abundance in the pond. In addition, water quality parameters, such as temperature, transparency, salinity, nitrite and phosphate levels, were tolerable in both ponds for the growth of shrimps. However, the level of pH was lower than the aquaculture quality standard, whereas those of nitrate, ammonia, and TOM were higher. The growth rate of Vannamei shrimp increased by 0.76–7.34%∙day-1.

Modeling of ship motions in waves concentrates in most applications on the response amplitude operator (RAO). This mathematically not demanding method of analysis is very attractive, but loses some essential information in certain situations. The objective of present contribution is to establish and investigate preliminary foundations for a seakeeping model as optimal for under keel clearance (UKC) estimation. A special attention was devoted to transients of motions, stationary harmonic motions, coupling between degrees of freedom, and the wave force transfer functions – all in the aspect of shallow water environment.

Opis:
Annular cavitator with water injection is one of the key parts of the long-range supercavitating vehicle powered by water ramjet. In this paper, hydrodynamic properties of annular cavitator are studied numerically. The standard k ~ ĺ turbulence model is coupled with the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations to model the natural supercavitation process. The multiphase flow is considered as a mixture of varying density and modeled by the mass exchange equations. To fully understand this process, numerical simulations were performed for different annular cavitators. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results, including the pressure distribution and forces acting on the cavitator surface, mass flow and pressure loss of water injection, various supercavity sizes, were obtained and analyzed. The pressure distribution on the cavitator surface was significantly changed which resulted in 4 ~ 6% increase of the total drag of the vehicle. The results show that the mass flow and velocity of the injection water is mainly dependent on the tube size, while the total pressure loss of the water injection is mostly related to the outlet pressure. Supercavity generated by annular cavitator is smaller than that of the discal one. Based on the correlation analysis of the supercavity size and other factors, it could be concluded that the contraction of the cavity size is mainly caused by the diffluent mass flow of the water injection.

Opis:
The micro air nucleus widely distributed in the ocean is a necessary condition for the cavitation of hydraulic machinery in seawater. In order to study the stability of air nucleus in seawater and cavitation inception, the computational domain of water molecules with air nucleus was studied using the method of molecular dynamics simulation, and the transient characteristics of air nucleus in liquid water were obtained. The key factors influencing nuclei stability were analyzed. The results showed that air nucleus with a certain mass could maintain the dynamic equilibrium in liquid water. The internal density of air nuclei had a critical value that allowed the nuclei to stably exist in water. The air nuclei mass was the decisive factor in its equilibrium volume in water, and the two were positively correlated. The internal density of air nuclei was negatively correlated with the nuclei radius when the nuclei was stable in water. Liquid surface tension was an important factor affecting the stability of the air nuclei. The larger the initial radius of nuclei, the smaller the water pressure, and the more likely the cavitation occurs.

Opis:
A bulbous bow is a typical ship structure. Due to the influence of the bulbous bow, complex flow separation and gas capture phenomena may appear during the water entry of ship-like sections. In this paper, experimental and numerical studies on the water entry of a ship-like section with an obvious bulbous bow are carried out. Two thin plates are installed at both ends of the test model to ensure that the flow field during the impact process is approximately twodimensional. The free-fall drop test is carried out in the test rig equipped with guide rails. By changing drop heights, impact pressure on the model surface with different initial impact velocities is measured. A numerical model for simulating the water entry of the ship-like section is established by using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method, based on the Navier-Stokes equations. Reasonable time steps and mesh size are determined by convergence analysis. Four different flow models are used in the numerical analysis. It is found that the K-Epsilon turbulence model can present the most reasonable numerical prediction by comparing numerical results with the experimental data. Furthermore, the influence of the bulbous bow on the impact loads is numerically studied by using the validated numerical model. It suggests that the bulbous bow has little effect on the impact force acting on the bow-flared area but, in the position near the bulbous bow, the pressure will be affected by the second slamming and the air cushion.

The article presents the results of experimental and numerical investigation of propeller scale effects, undertaken in co-operation of the Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA), Germany, and Ship Design and Research Centre (CTO SA), Poland. The objective of the investigation was to test the adequacy of the methods currently used to account for the propeller scale effect and to develop possible improvement of the methods. HSVA has conducted model experiments in the large cavitation tunnel together with panel method and CFD calculations. CTO SA has performed model experiments in the towing tank, together with lifting surface and CFD calculations. Both institutions have suggested different new approaches to the problem and different new procedures to account for the propeller scale effects. In the article the procedures are presented together with the description of the underlying experimental and theoretical research.

The effects of oxygen-containing functional groups on the structure and dynamic properties of water molecules near a lignite surface were investigated through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Because of its complex composition and structure, a graphite surface containing hydroxyl, carboxyl, and carbonyl groups was used to represent the lignite surface model. According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) results, the composing proportion of hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxyl is 21:13:6. The density profiles of oxygen and hydrogen atoms indicate that the brown coal surface characteristics influence the structural and dynamic properties of water molecules. The interfacial water is much more ordered than bulk water. The results of the radial distribution functions, mean square displacements, and local self-diffusion coefficients for the water molecules in the vicinity of three oxygen-containing functional groups confirmed that carboxyl groups are the preferential adsorption sites.
