Przedstawiono przypadek awarii wielokomorowego, żelbetowego zbiornika oczyszczalni ścieków podczas próby szczelności. Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała błędy konstrukcyjne zbiornika, które podczas eksploatacji stwarzałyby poważne zagrożenie bezpieczeństwa. Zaproponowano sposób wzmocnienia zbiornika, który został z powodzeniem zrealizowany.
A description is given of a case in which a fault was found in a multi-chamber reinforced concrete tank at a waste water treatment plant during a leakage test. Analysis revealed structural design errors which would have led to a serious safety risk while the tank was in use. A method of reinforcing the tank was proposed and successfully implemented.

W referacie przedstawiono problemy dużej podatności na korozję stalowych zbiorników na ścieki komunalne, które w bardzo krótkim czasie, nawet w okresie gwarancji, ulegają znacznej korozji. Spośród wielu spodziewanych przyczyn korozji wskazano na wadliwie wykonaną ochronną instalację katodowo-anodową. Zaproponowano kilka sposobów naprawy ścian zbiornika, między innymi z wykorzystaniem instalacji katodowo-anodowej.
The rusty tanks on communal wastewater are described in this paper. They were destructive in short time during its exploitation. There are many reasons for such destruction but the most important is the lack of cathode and anode protection. There are some solutions of repairing of tanks presented

W artykule przedstawiono stan awaryjny żelbetowej powłoki cylindrycznego zbiornika Wydzielonej Komory Fermentacyjnej (WKF) wynikający z błędów projektowych. Przeanalizowano wytężenie powłoki zbiornika występujące podczas nieudanej próby szczelności, zwracając szczególną uwagę na wytężenie zbrojenia poziomego. Etapy napełniania odwzorowano zgodnie z zaistniałym obciążeniem, jakie wystąpiło podczas przerwanej na skutek licznych przecieków, próby szczelności. Zaprezentowano zinwentaryzowany stan zarysowania powłoki cylindrycznej przy poziomie cieczy równym około 2/3 wysokości ściany. Ponadto przedstawiono analizę numeryczną oraz przebieg realizacji autorskiego projektu wzmocnienia żelbetowej ściany cylindrycznej zbiornika WKF przy użyciu cięgien bez przyczepności.
The article presents damage of the ferro-concrete structure of a cylindrical tank of a separated fermenter. The damage results from design errors. Stress of the tank’s structure that was present during the unsuccessful tightness test was analyzed, with a particular emphasis placed on the stress imposed on the horizontal reinforcing elements. The stages of filling were replicated in line with the existing load that was present during the tightness test, interrupted due to the numerous leaks. The miniaturized status of the cylindrical surface, with the liquid leveled-off at the level of 2/3 of the total height of the wall was presented. What is more, a numerical analysis was presented, along with the process of realization of an original project, the aim of which was to reinforce the ferro-concrete cylindrical wall of the tank with the use of non-grip steel rods.

The results of comprehensive research on the status of sewage treatment in Almaty are presented in this article. The cities of Iraq in general and the city of Al Diwaniyah in particular are characterized by the fact that the majority of households use septic tank to dispose of sewage, leading to contamination of ground and surface water and a disturbance to the environment. The objective of this study is to protect the water and soil sources from the risk of pollution, eliminate the process of perfusion and thus, reduce costs, maintain public health, as well as design and implement the proposed purification unit for domestic wastewater treatment. A domestic wastewater treatment unit has been improved to meet the standard specifications for the quality of the effluent wastewater. In this study, a compact non-electric sewage treatment unit was improved and implemented. Treatment is based on an effective modern biological purification process. Experimental verification and analysis of results were performed to demonstrate the improvement of physical and chemical parameters. The performance of the septic tanks-bioreactor gave satisfactory results. The removal efficiencies of Total Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), NH4-N, Total Nitrogen and Total Suspended Solid (TSS) were 96.9%, 84.6%, 78.8%, 79.9% and 95.3%, respectively.

The flotation wastewater treatment was considered in the paper. The main stages and parameters of flotation process were pointed out. The multistage flotation model considering all main stages of flotation process is presented. However, its main disadvantage is that for the definition of constant characterizing the bubble-particle aggregate formation, the constant value of superficial gas velocity was used, which is incorrect for horizontal flow flotation tank. The modified multistage flotation model with superficial gas velocity as the function of time was proposed. The experiments were carried out on a laboratory setup with a pneumohydraulic system of aeration in order to verify the proposed model. The comparison of experimental and theoretical results proved the importance of superficial gas velocity change consideration.

The aim of the study was to verify the possibility of the existence of preferential flow paths in a septic tank and the effect of using various types of inlet and outlet in this context. Two of the most unfavourable variants of privileged flow paths for different types of inlet and outlet were analysed. The first variant was related to the occurrence of the privileged flow path below the water surface level directly to the outlet and the second variant – to the socalled boiling phenomenon in a septic tank. During the study, the intensity of outflow from the septic tank was measured. The time between successive doses also was measured. These studies were carried out using several inlet and outlet structures combinations. It was observed that by introducing a suitable outlet it is possible to limit and in the case of the particular type of filtering basket – to eliminate the unwanted phenomenon of preferential flow paths after hot water introduction. The phenomenon of boiling in the septic tank may occur due to the introduction of wastewater of higher density containing a higher concentration of the suspension. The effect of cooler water introduction on this phenomenon was not observed. The limitation of the maximum intensity of outflow from the septic tank can be achieved by filtering basket using at the outlet, which increases the flow resistance thanks to the low porosity.

The paper presents an evaluation of the pollutant removal efficiencies of four primary settling tanks that were components of on-site domestic wastewater treatment plants located in the Roztocze National Park in Poland. We studied two four-chamber settling tanks which were elements of the technological lines of activated sludge treatment plants, and two threechamber settling tanks which provided primary treatment in hybrid constructed wetlands. The tests were conducted in the years 2017–2019. During this period, wastewater samples for analysis were collected from the first chamber (raw wastewater) and the last chamber (primary settled wastewater) of each settling tank. We tested the following pollution parameters: total suspended solids (TSS), BOD5, COD, total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP). The following mean pollutant removal efficiencies were obtained for the four-chamber settling tanks: TSS – 68.3%, BOD5 – 50.4%, and COD – 49.5%; the three-chamber settling tanks were much less efficient at reducing those pollution parameters: 50.9%, 17.0%, and 2.3%, respectively. Neither the three-chamber nor the four-chamber settling tanks ensured effective elimination of biogenic compounds. In most cases, the concentrations of TN and TP in primary settled wastewater were higher compared to raw sewage, which means that these elements were being released from sewage sludge during treatment. Despite this finding, the study shows that a primary settling tank should be used as a basic component of any domestic wastewater treatment plant, as it ensures a considerable reduction in TSS and organic matter.

The aim of this paper was to present the current state and the need for development of the sanitary infrastructure in the communes of the Ryki District located in the Lublin Voivodeship. The Ryki District encompasses 1 urban Commune – Dęblin, 1 urban-rural Commune – Ryki and 4 rural communes: Kłoczew, Nowodwór, Stężyca and Ułęż. The paper is based on the data from the surveys conducted in all the afore-mentioned communes in 2016. In the whole district on average 71.3% of the population used the water supply network, while 42% of the inhabitants were able to discharge wastewater to the sewage system. Within the area of the Ryki District, 5 collective wastewater treatment plants with a capacity exceeding 5 m3/d functioned in 2016. The households which were not connected to the sewage network discharged wastewater mainly to non-return tanks. About 440 household sewage treatment plants were found in the surveyed communes. The overwhelming majority of such small objects in the discussed district were activated sludge systems (92%). The research carried out in 2016 proved a strong need to develop the current state of the sanitary infrastructure in the Ryki District. A particular emphasis should be placed on the wastewater management by connecting the inhabitants of urban areas to a joint sewage disposal system. Ecological awareness must be raised so as to encourage people to invest in household wastewater treatment plants, which should be used in the areas with scattered development.

The aim of this paper was to present the current state and the need for development of the sanitary infrastructure in the communes of the Bialski District located in the Lublin Voivodeship. The Bialski District encompasses 2 urban communes: Miedzyrzec Podlaski and Terespol and 17 rural communes: Biała Podlaska, Drelów, Janów Podlaski, Kodeń, Konstantynów, Leśna Podlaska, Łomazy, Międzyrzec Podlaski, Piszcząc, Rokitno, Rossosz, Sławatycze, Sosnówka, Terespol, Tuczna, Wisznice and Zalesie. The present paper uses the data from the surveys conducted in these communes in 2016. On average, 79.2% of the population used the water supply system in the surveyed communes, while 39.4% of the inhabitants had the possibility of discharging wastewater to the sewerage system. In the area of the communes, there were 20 collective, mechanical and biological wastewater treatment plants with a capacity exceeding 5 m3/d. The households which were not connected to the wastewater network, discharged wastewater mainly to non-return tanks. In the surveyed communes, there were 4437 household wastewater treatment plants. Most of them (above 80%) were the systems with infiltration drainage, which do not ensure high efficiency of pollutants removal and may even contribute to the degradation of the groundwater quality. In order to solve the existing problems of wastewater and water management occurring in the communes where the Bialski District is located, it is necessary to further develop collective wastewater systems and equip the areas characterized by dispersed housing with highly efficient household treatment plants, e.g. constructed wetlands.

This article discusses the main stages and features of wastewater treatment at “Food Ingredients” LLC (Russia, Krasnodar region) involved in vegetable oils and fats refining. The experimental data on averaged qualitative composition of industrial wastewater involving the period from January to June, 2018 were presented. The indicators of the quality of averaged waste did not exceed: 20 mg/l for ammonium nitrogen; 20 mg/l for phosphates; 800 mg/l for suspended solids; 700 mg/l for fatty substances. The operation of biological aeration tank was analyzed from January to June, 2018. The graphic dependences of the change of sludge index, phosphate ions, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and temperature were given. The species composition of microorganisms and their amount were determined by means of optical microscopy. Absolute quantity of microorganisms in activated sludge was determined with the “calibrated droplet” method. As of October 31, 2018 the quantity of microorganisms was as follows, U/ml: small flagellates – 44,015; free swimming infusoria – 34,233; Euglypha – 6,520; Vorticella – 27,713; Rotatoria – 29,343; Aspidiska – 36,950; Aelosoma – 2,173; Heliozoa – 1,086. No filamentous microorganisms were detected. After treatment, the recovered water was characterized by the following indicators of the quality: transparent, ammonium nitrogen content in water was less than 0.1 mg/l, phosphate ion content was no higher than 0.2 mg/l; COD was no higher than 30 mg O2/l, hydrogen index was about pH = 7. These indicators comply with the requirements for water in technical water supply systems of industrial enterprises (Russia), as applied to recovered water produced of wastewater for subsequent use in recycled water supply system. The treated water is reused in the production processes, which evidences high quality of water treatment and reliable operation of the equipment in local treatment facilities at “Food Ingredients” LLC during 10 years of operation.

The aim of the work is to present the current state of water and wastewater management in the municipalities where the Polesie National Park (PNP) is located. The PNP is situated in Lublin Voivodeship, in the area of six municipalities: Sosnowica, Hańsk, Urszulin, Stary Brus, Wierzbica and Ludwin. The data used in this paper, were obtained on the basis of the surveys conducted in these municipalities in 2016 by the Department of Environmental Engineering and Geodesy of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin. In the analyzed communes, there was a very large disproportion between the usage of sewerage and the water supply network. It has been shown that 79.1% of the inhabitants living in the afore-mentioned communes used the water supply network and only 22.5% of them used sewerage. In the discussed communities there are 9 collective, mechanical and biological wastewater treatment plants with a capacity of over 5 m3•d-1. On the farms located in the scattered areas, which are not connected to the sewerage, wastewater is discharged mainly to the septic tanks. In four out of the six analyzed municipalities, there were 2345 septic tanks registered. Domestic sewage from some farms is purified in household wastewater treatment plants (395 pieces). The plants with the drainage systems are prevalent (84.9%), which may contribute to the groundwater quality degradation. In order to protect the natural environment within the communes that form the PNP, it is necessary to undertake the actions that will contribute to the improvement of the current state of water and wastewater management. While solving the existing problems related to water supply and wastewater treatment, it is strongly required to adhere to the principle of sustainable development and use highly effective systems in order to ensure that the ecological effects are appropriate.

Septic tanks are common devices for primary wastewater treatment, however, they are prone to periodically raised effluent solids concentration, which can accelerate the clogging process in specific conditions. The aim of the study was to identify the impact of the secondary filter on the reduction of TS load and possibility to increase the operation time. The study was carried out in two series using six filters. In each series six filters (pipes with filtering material installed on the bottom) were used: three filters with filter mesh and the other three - with non-woven geo-textile. The filters were being filled with wastewater until clogging was achieved (wastewater table in pipes rising up to 50 cm). For the hydraulic conductivity estimation of falling water table tests were performed. Similar values of accumulated TS to dosed TS ratios were observed during the both series for the both filtering material types. The particle size distributions in the both filtering materials were similar. The fact of accumulation of particles of very small dimension (over 73% smaller than 5 μm), much smaller than the filtering material pores diameter might suggest that the process taking place was that of cake filtration. Despite the higher cumulated dry mass of filter cake and inside the filtering layer, the average hydraulic conductivity of non-woven geo-textile was higher than the average hydraulic conductivity of filter mesh. Probably thanks to the higher porosity of geo-textile higher amount of solids can be trapped inside the filtering material itself. The study showed the relatively low ratio of accumulated solids to supplied solids load; however, the accumulated mass seems to be significant for clogging prevention, especially in the case of several filtering layers usage. This way much more solids can be removed from the septic tank effluent (e.g., using four layers - about 10÷20%) and clogging process can be slowed down (two - three years longer operation time).
Osadniki gnilne to powszechnie stosowane urządzenia do wstępnego oczyszczania ścieków, jednak są one podatne na okresowe odprowadzanie zwiększonych stężeń zawiesin, co może w specyficznych warunkach przyspieszać procesy kolmatacji. Celem badań było określenie wpływu filtra wtórnego na zmniejszenie obciążenia zawiesiną i możliwość zwiększenia czasu eksploatacji. Badania przeprowadzono w dwóch seriach przy użyciu sześciu filtrów. W każdej serii użyto sześciu filtrów (rury z materiałem filtrującym zainstalowanym na dnie): trzy filtry z filtrem siatkowym, a pozostałe trzy - z geowłókniny. Filtry były zapełniane ściekami aż do uzyskania kolmatacji (zwierciadło ścieków w rurach sięgało do 50 cm). Dla oszacowania przewodności hydraulicznej opadającego zwierciadła wody zostały przeprowadzone testy. Zaobserwowano podobne wartości zawiesin zgromadzonych proporcjonalnie do dozowanych podczas obu serii oraz dla obu typów materiałów filtrujących. Rozkład wielkości cząstek w obu materiałach filtracyjnych był podobny. Fakt zgromadzenia cząstek o bardzo małych wymiarach (ponad 73% poniżej 5 μm), znacznie mniejszych niż średnica porów materiału filtracyjnego, może sugerować, że odbywający się proces dotyczy placka filtracyjnego. Pomimo wyższej skumulowanej suchej masy placka filtracyjnego i tej wewnątrz warstwy filtracyjnej, średnie przewodnictwo hydrauliczne geowłókniny było wyższe niż średnie przewodnictwo hydrauliczne filtra siatkowego. Prawdopodobnie dzięki wyższej porowatości geowłókniny większa ilość zawiesin możne zostać zatrzymana wewnątrz samego materiału filtrującego. Badania wykazały stosunkowo niski współczynnik nagromadzonych cząstek stałych do dostarczonych; jednak skumulowana masa wydaje się istotna dla zapobiegania kolmatacji, zwłaszcza w przypadku wykorzystania kilku warstw filtrujących. W ten sposób o wiele więcej zawiesin można usunąć z odpływu z osadników gnilnych (na przykład dla czterech warstw - około 10÷20%) i proces kolmatacji może zostać spowolniony (dwa-trzy lata dłuższy okres użytkowania).

The purpose of the present article was to determine odour emission rate from primary settling tanks after hermetisation. The paper presents the results of the research on odour emission from four settling tanks, covered with self-supporting aluminium domes with a diameter of 52 meters, located on urban wastewater treatment plants, with the planned flow capacity equal to 200 000 m3/day. Altogether, the olfactometry analysis of 189 samples of polluted air pulled from the domes with the use of an air blower which has efficiency of 12 000 m3/h was conducted. The results of odour concentration measurements were in a range of approximately 10 800 to 763 600 ouE/m3. Average odour emission rate was equal to 102 ouE/(s · m2). The obtained value is much higher than the literature data, available for non-hermetised settlers only. This rate enables better estimation of the odour stream that has to be deodorised after sealing the settling tanks.

The aim of this paper is to present the current state and the need for development of sanitary infrastructure in the communes of Parczew District, in Lublin Voivodeship. Parczew District encompasses seven communes: Parczew, Dębowa Kłoda, Jabłoń, Milanów, Podedwórze, Siemień, and Sosnowica. The present paper uses the data from the surveys conducted in these communes in 2016. On average, 88% of the population used the water supply system in the communes surveyed, while 48% of the inhabitants were connected to a sewerage system. Parczew District had 12 collective mechanical and biological wastewater treatment plants with a capacity exceeding 5 m3/d. The households which were not connected to the sewerage network discharged the wastewater mainly to non-return tanks. In the communes surveyed, 1,115 households had domestic wastewater treatment plants. All of them were systems with infiltration drainage, which do not ensure high efficiency of removing pollutions and may even contribute to the degradation of the groundwater quality. In order to solve the existing problems of sewage and water management in the communes of Parczew District, it is necessary to further develop the collective sewerage systems and equip the areas which have a dispersed development layout with highly efficient domestic treatment plants, such as constructed wetlands.
